Buying from Samsung vs AT&T - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

I see on samsung.com that if you buy the AT&T version there, it is $300 off at 699. If I were to buy this, would it come from AT&T or Samsung? Would it have the uninstallable AT&T bloatware, facebook, etc?

Well. They ALL come from Samsung. If you order it from Samsung.com it will be shipped directly from Samsung.
As far as bloatware, are you looking at the ATT branded N960U or the factory unlocked N960U1?

I understand Samsung makes them all. If you order from AT&T, they ship it from their stock. If you order from Samsung, I would expect it to come from Samsung. Common sense.
My question was if I order the AT&T version (not the unlocked version) from Samsung, are they already all set up with the uninstallable AT&T bloat? I imagine it would be the same as you would get ordering from AT&T, just trying to get clarification. This is just one of the points I'm weighing now that I'm looking for a new phone.

You asked if it would come from Samsung or ATT. I was clarifying of you order from Samsung.com, it would ship from Samsung. Likewise, if you order from ATT, it ships from ATT. So I guess I don't understand why you asked if it would come from Samsung or ATT.
As far as bloatware, it depends on which one you buy. If you buy the ATT branded N960U from Samsung.com it will ship directly from Samsung, but it will be the same as buying from ATT. It will be an ATT branded N960U with all the bloatware.
If you order the Unlocked by Samsung N960U1, it will ship directly from Samsung and have no carrier bloatware.
That's why I asked which one you were looking at buying.

lol, in my mind i was asking something different in that first part. Anyhow, you answered the question. So I guess it's $699 full of bloat or 899 no bloat...hmm. Another point for OP6T.

buy the AT&t version for 699, and then flash the U1 firmware on it with Odin to get rid of all the bloatware.

So is that a thing now? Using odin for that? I stopped buying Samsung phones when they started locking the bootloaders. Couldn't pass up the 8+ though with the newer design, but have hated that it's stuck with all that bloat. Disabling apps helps a little. I was under the impression we were pretty much stuck with stock firmware. I guess I haven't looked into that lately.
Any cons to flashing the new firmware? I bet there a thread somewhere, huh?

LOL. It's been a thing for a while now. You could even flash the unlocked firmware on the S8/+. It won't unlock your bootloader and won't trip Knox, so you keep Samsung Pay.
I'm actually using an ATT 512GB N960U, running the U1 firmware, on T-Mobile. No issues at all. And yes there's plenty of info here on the forum on how to do it.
The most concise write up is actually in the Note 8 forums. It's the carrier switching thread. Same method. Just different files for the Note 9 vs the Note 8 obviously.

I am using N960U1 firmware on AT&T Note 9 and using T-Mobile SIM. Even Wifi calling works. Firmware was flashed via Odin and I recieved 2 software updates from Samsung after I started using N960U1 firmware. I use VMWare Work profile for work emails and I can confirm Knox had no breach. Samsung Pay works as usual.

Awesome. Thanks guys! Got a little bit more research to do.

But we warned if you buy a U1 from Samsung don't expect all ATT features to work out of the box. If I were you I'd buy the ATT branded one from Samsung. Then flash to u1 should you decide to do so.

Yeah, that's the only way I'd do it. It's only $699 for the AT&T version. Honestly, that's the only reason I'm considering this phone now. I was trying to decide decide the OP6T and the Pixel 3, then I saw this sale price today. If I were to get this phone, should I avoid doing any updates before i flash to U1, or possibly the new beta?

If I didn't have one already, I'd jump on that ATT version for 699. But I think I did pretty good with a brand new ATT 512GB for $750 off FB marketplace.
It doesn't matter if you accept updates or not. You can still use ODIN to flash to through U1 firmware.

My dude, it will have a **** ton of bloatware on it but you can use an app like Package Disabler pro to get rid of it. Also, if you get the AT&T 960U version, it'll have all of the awesome carrier features. You can still accomplish this with the unlocked U1 version which I have but you'll have to flash the U firmware then have an AT&T rep change the IMEI to match an actual AT&T branded phone. It's simple to do but you'll have to most likely make an in store appearance. You can skip all of that with the branded AT&T version but again you'll get a ton of bloatware! Good luck!

The easier thing to do is to buy the ATT version then flash the U1 firmware. As far as bloatware, there's no difference between buying the U1, or buying the ATT U and then flashing the U1 firmware. It will get rid of ALL the carrier bloat and it will be the exact same as having a U1.
Then later if he wants to install the ATTA firmeare to get those carrier feetures back, there's no calling in and switching IMEIs or any of that garbage, because he already has an ATT device with a registered IMEI. And he saves $200.
It's why I bought an ATT version. I got it crazy cheap and knew I could just flash the U1 firmware, which I did immediately, then stuck my T-Mo SIM in it. Then if I ever switch to ATT (which I'm considering because of FirstNet), then I can just flash the ATT firmware and it will all work no problem.
There's literally NO advantage here to buying the U1.

Pulled the trigger. $699 was a pretty good deal. At $999, I would have bought the OP6T, but at only $120 more, I figured why the hell not?! I did go to Best Buy and 2 corporate stores to see if they would match, but no luck. The wait is going to be rough, as expected shipping date is next wednesday. I guess it gives me time to get a case or 2 and maybe some tempered glass.
Thanks for all the info.

Negative. I preorded the AT&T version directly from Samsung.com. It came with maybe... 3 AT&T branded applications. They were actually usable ones. Samsung bloat FAR out numbers the carrier bloat. I was actually curious about this. I remember buying the Note 4 and Note 5 and there were at least 10 AT&T branded bloatware apps. So either they reduced them, or the ones directly from Samsung aren't loaded as much as ones directly from AT&T.

Yes the wait SUCKS! My first Note 9 was a 128GB T-Mo model I got from eBay for $700. Then an ATT 512GB showed up on FB Marketplace for $800. I don't need 512GB storage or 8GB RAM, but I just have to have the biggest and baddest so I offered him $750. It had some narly scratches on the screen, so he did an insurance claim (he worked for ATT), and got a brand new replacement device and sold it to me for $750. Both times though I had to wait for the device to be delivered. The waiting sucks, but oh so worth it. And at $699, it's a no brainer.
The OP6T is an intriguing phone and a great value. But so is the Pixel 3 XL IMO. But neither one does what the Note 9 does.

Nope. The ATT version shipped from Samsung.com are identical to the ones shipped from ATT. The carrier bloat is getting better across the board. Although I'd say ATT is still the worst. T-Mobile has the least carrier bloat. And of course if you flash the U1 firmware, all the carrier bloat goes bye-bye.

Not in my case, I purchased the U1 and before I flashed the U firmware, I noticed hardly any bloat other than the usual gathering if Samsung apps like S Health, S Notes, Smart Switch etc. Now after I flashed the AT&T firmware the floodgates opened. Maybe it was just my luck but I got ride of everything I didn't want with Package Disabler Pro but I was simply warning the man. The bloat on my end was tremendous. At least 10 + carrier apps.

Exynos version on Verizon

Anyone know if the exynos version would work on verizon? I assume that that it would but the 1x and 3g would not. lol, i would be ok with that if i also go root and TWRP.
My follow up question is where could we order it? It would be nice to get it right from samsung, but i don't see that option.

i think this is the place to buy it. Since they will open it up and use one of their sims to make 5 minutes of calls before sending it to us, so it doesn't lock up once we get it.
Has anyone used 4g exclusively on verizon, what are the drawbacks?
I know where to buy it here in the US. I could actually buy it today. Just want to know if it will work on Verizon

I dont think you will be able to use it to make phone calls or msg because verizon use a CDMA network for this and the exynos version doesnt have this. Just my guess.
Samsung's soc never supports cdma (big Q owns the patents) so that's why the rest of the world who aren't on cdma gets the exynos versions

That's not true at all, my Galaxy Tab S2 is an Exynos and runs on Verizon LTE., and the galaxy S6 was an Exynos 7420 on Verizon.
Oh I stand corrected. I knew the tablets were supported but figured since you don't make calls from them, it wouldn't need cdma. In either case, unless it's made for Verizon, the exynos versions won't natively support Verizon.
The FCC filing shows it support the Verizon LTE bands, but no CDMA bands.
It would probably work for data but I am not sure if it would work for calls, unless they implement VOLTE on the international version for Verizon.
Guys it's best to wait for the North American unlocked version (Qualcomm chip) to become available in a couple of weeks or so.
It will definitely work on both Verizon and Sprint and their MVNOs.
I can see bhphotovideo taking preorders for it already, and the page is setup on bestbuy. This is the S8 version I'm gonna go for. Downside is it will cost you a little more, but it is worth it to me to know I can use it on all US carriers.
Edit: looks like bhphoto added the model numbers for their preorders as "SM-G950F" and "SM-G955F", which is the same as the European/global GSM version. So that is Exynos chipset powered, and it's a no go for CDMA guys.
The plus on this model is it gets the software updates more quickly than the US unlocked model. (This is still speculation based on Samsung not updating SM-G930U to Android 7 for months while the SM-G930F and the US carrier models already received their updates.)

Unlocked as in "unlocked for all carriers" (or "sim free" is what Samsung UK calls their SM-G95*F versions). But I wouldn't be surprised if the bootloader is also unlocked.
My guess, even with the unlocked (unencrypted) bootloader, is once you flash a custom ROM/recovery it will still trip the Samsung Knox binary counter and void the warranty. This is just speculation based on Samsung's devices in the past. We have to wait until someone gets their hand on the US unlocked version.

i buy international versions all the time...
don't listen to all these people who just make things up but never used it.
supported bands according to this site just an example:
http://www.china-prices.com/phone/bands/7922/samsung-galaxy-s8-exynos
I have the exynos s7 i bought from B&H in US. on verizon CDMA won't connect, but if you are in a region with VOLTE and you don't travel within US, it should be fine.
all the international versions have much better support if you are on ATT/Tmobile where GSM is the "3g/crippled 4g" I left verizon for Tmobile just to get better support for Exynos.
now... i didn't check validity of the site above, but it gives u an idea. i just wanted to chime in.
Exynos has much better power management IMO. my wife's phone is S7 tmobile variant, and when i was using s7 Exynos, my battery life was BETTER AND i use the phone way more than her throughout the day.
going to, i actually bought s8 TMobile this time... just so i can use samsung pay... samsung pay will work if you modify the CSC and install spay/framework, but guess i'm getting old and getting lazy
exynos will likely get rooted FIRST, and the first root type will likely trip Knox, and without Knox, no samsung pay...
TLDR. Exynos will work on vzw but not all the bands. if you think it's too risky, don't get it.
2 upsides that actually matter IMO when it comes to Exynos versions.
1. less bloat, I say less, because Exynos versions come with all kinds of CSCs from all over the world. and depending on where it came from... you'll see it installing regional specific apps on your initial boot. 1 year i had a phone with Arab CSC and it installed bunch of apps made for Arabs... on another phone i had a UK CSC and it installed all kinds of UK news apps.
2. better battery
3. faster updates from sammobile

I read it I just think its a dumb GSM phone for people that have a dumb CDMA phone provider. LTE only is not a solution Verizon people simply need Verizon phones. Just like Sprint people need Sprint phones. Getting international GSM phones for use on CDMA service providers is stupid. Thats one reason CDMA is crap compared to GSM. Unlocked phones like some apple and moto and rare samsung are the best solution. Best Buy will have the unlocked snapdragon available in 2 weeks for $725/$825

You dont need regular calls? You are going LTE only and hoping you dont miss any calls? If you are using hangouts for calls and don't need cellular phone calls then go get one. Ebay, amazon, they have them for sale, forget warranty unless you want a huge hassle.

I understand everything. I was wondering who has done it in the past. Everyone in my company with the latest update from Verizon has seen their CDMA coverage disappear. Where they once had CDMA service, they now have none. Verizon seem to really be pushing the VoLTE. I've had phones where i have disabled all non 4g bands, because i didn't like it switching, and it actually worked better for me. The main reason i ask is because the international version has root and TWRP. Hopefully the US version will get root, but i don't think we'll every get an unlocked bootloader. The verizon version is already sim unlocked, so i'm not looking for more sim unlocked phones that don't have root.

Online specs say yes...some users have had 4g+ speeds
Hardware is same...if you have issues firmware wise, unlocked can be flashed to Sprint firmware and you will get updates from Sprint...I've tested this and even model number changed
Can I flash unlocked software on a carrier phone. I bought the Sprint variant because I wanted to avoid all the BS and now I think I'll be going over to At&t in a month and obviously would like to take my phone. I thought flashing unlocked firmware would trip Knox and really don't want to F that up.
I just tried to order from sammy site and the damm promotion for the card/charger ended last sunday, had to call them and complain that their system was down during last weekend and now i have a ticket # hoping to get the promo code when i order, there site said the promo for note 7 owners is til 10-3 but in tiny print the other is til 9-24, ****ty

Yes you can flash unlocked firmware on carrier device. Flashing factory official firmware does not trip knox...only custom flashing does

Getting a Note 8 today and wanted to ask something

Which would you guys say is better, tmob will still do the bogo today if I get it or I can just go to best buy and get the unlocked one? So two notes or one note that I can properly root.

i might be wrong as i live in the UK, but an unlocked one from best buy will be no better off to root than the tmobile one?
the "unlocked" does not mean the bootloader is unlocked
both are snapdragon correct? There is a root available but i would recommend you buy an N950F or FD (Exynos) if your main focus is root and custom roms.
Lucky you! I would get just one

It's listed with the exynos but that maybe an error on their site.
First of all BOGO deal has some restrictions, not every plan qualifies, you should really read fine print, or head to Tmo forum and look there for details. I also don't think BB would be selling phone that doesn't work on half of US networks, so make sure you make your decisions based on correct info.
T mobile has a lot of stipulations with the BOGO. I purchased a t mobile variant directly from Samsung. They have a finance program 0% for 24 months. I also had a note 7 so I was able to get a nice discount as well. I almost went with an unlocked from Samsung(same as best buy) but I wanted all my carrier features. Plus since I bought the phone from Samsung, I was able to SIM unlock my t mobile note 8 within days of receiving it. Plus if I really wanted, I could always flash the unlocked firmware on to this device if I wanted it De bloated which I might end up doing. I use video calling a lot with my family and it doesn't worked on the Unlocked firmware but I recently started using google DUO which is way better video calling quality anyway. I know using t mobile on the unlocked firmware, WI fi calling, VOLTE hd voice does work which is the most important to me. I'm pretty sure mobile hotspot works as well but not sure.

You have to jump through hoops for T-Mobile's BOGO, if you can wait Samsung will have a BOGO for the Note 8 just like they did for the S8+ and you won't have to add a line like the T-Mobile.

Unlocked on AT&T

Ok so I have read some stuff that claims if I buy the unlocked Note 9 on best buy's website that my service with at&t will be inferior compared to a note I would have bought through their payment plan BS. Despite both having identical hardware and both being on the same service plan.
Is this true? Is there a easy way around it?
If not, what carriers do not do this?
Because for the past 2 years I have been using an unlocked axon 7, and lately I have noticed the service quality severely drop, and if this is the game AT&T wants to play then I will just move to another carrier and get a better promotion.

Going by the unlocked note 8 series on t mobile. I think most functionality works with their Network out of the box.
I'm currently using a unlocked N9 on Sprint, out of the box Rich communication text doesn't work nor does HD calling. Also the damn camera shutter sound cannot be muted lol.

I read something similar about using an unlocked version on on T-Mobile but I have had no issues so far. Some people were saying that the carrier versions will fully support all bands but the unlocked ones may not. If worst comes to worst you can just flash carrier firmware on your unlocked version and you'll be good to go.
It's not about the model, it's about the firmware. Regardless of reflashing or outright buying an unlocked firmware, the network detects this.
The result is loss of all network-propriety functions, including: WiFi calling, VoLTE, and other features.
If you don't care about them, power to ya.

Not sure about AT&T but on TMO, WIFI calling works on my Unlocked N9.
Carriers probably hate when you use unlocked phones because that's money lost for them. So they may make it seem like you're losing something.

TMo sends their HD voice protocol/implementation to Google so it's "baked" into the phone. ATT chooses to be private.
ATT sucks for unlocked devices.
not only do the mentioned services not work, the reception also sucks compared to att branded phones. i have multiple iphones and last gen galaxy phones such as the S8, they all perform very well compared to my unlocked note 9.
i think i'm going to return my note 9 to bestbuy and get it exchanged for ATT branded one.
i can then carrier unlock from att.
unless i switch to Tmobile, no more unlocked devices for me.
it's 2018 and i gotta dial my voicemail on my note 9, what a piece of crap

I haven't had that issue on AT&T out west . HD calling and stuff doesn't work, but download speed is just the same as it was a carrier branded phone.
Also why not flash the AT&T firmware, instead of returning the phone?

Keep in mind that if you DO buy the unlocked version, you can flash AT&T's firmware on there for the full experience. You just won't have to deal with AT&T's incompetant SIM Unlock team if you ever leave (or sell it).

i've been trying to flash ATT firmware with this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-9/how-to/stock-official-attodinn960usqu1arg9-t3828691
no luck, seems the file is corrupt.
i know i can download official ATT stock firmware from sammobile.com.
but here;s the question:
every single usa version of the phone has the bootloader locked and safestrap does not work in oreo 8.1 as far as i'm concerned.
how do i flash this into my note9?

Hate to sound like an idiot but is flashing hard to do? I have had note phones since the note 2 and have always bought carrier branded phones but thinking of jumping on unlocked version this time.

No flashing isn't hard. I have not done it for a while. Just make sure to read a few threads on it. Make sure you're using the latest method as some details can change and of course RTFM more than once and all the details. And if you're uncertain don't be a guinea pig and wait until some veterans verify the process. Soft bricking is possible and unbricking can be impossible for the technologically inclined. I forgot what phone, I think it was actually Galaxy Tab S2 I thought I hard bricked. Took me a couple days to get it back to functioning. There are many stories this some worse than mine.

I also have a US unlocked n9, which i got directly from Samsung.
Here, there's a guide in
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/SM-N960U1/ATT/download/N960U1UEU1ARH2/231817/
You can either download the firmware from the link above, or from Venom's ATT thread. Either way, if you want the latest , just flash either, then trigger OTA. That's what I did. Now I'm on latest official ATT fw in my US unlocked n9.
And no, you don't need an unlocked bootloader for this. Will NOT trip know since these are OFFICIAL firmwares.

Verizon Note 9 on AT&T

If I get a Verizon note 9 can I just pop an Att sim into it and it will work. I know there may be differences between voice and data but Basically is the Verizon NOTE9 GSM unlocked like past Galaxy phones were?
I read a Verizon forum where the Verizon rep said that the note 9 is GSM unlocked but she said AFTER it has been activated on Verizon.
To make matters more confusing she linked to a Verizon page that basically said all Verizon's post pay phones are GSM 4G unlocked (nothing about activation first).
Anyone can help me here? Thinking of getting a cheap one of eBay to use mainly overseas and ATT or wherever else.
Yes. The Verizon models are unlocked. And it's the same exact hardware as the ATT version. My recommendation is to flash either the U1 or the ATT firmware though. Otherwise you'll get the Verizon boot animation and Verizon bloatware.
The ATT firmware will allow you to use WiFi calling and VOLTE.
The unlocked U1 firmware will be clean and have no carrier bloat.

Thanks for your answer. I will have to read up more on the Flashing and U1 firmware!
I see now that on ebay that some say verizon unlocked and some say verizon locked and some of the verizons up for sale dont specify (but in the item detail it says locked or contract)... This makes things more confusing.
I have always bought verizon phones for the unlocked gsm. I did read that verizon was going to stop having them unlocked....this is my main fear.
So what you're saying, is that the verizon note 9 is 100% gsm unlocked? sorry to ask again.

I'm also looking for that definitive answer as I want to get the Verizon Note 9 for overseas use. I read that it will be unlocked after activation as they were having armed robberies at stores and other inventory locations. I was going to buy the Sprint model but it cost almost $150 to unlock.

Verizon started that with the Pixel 3, after the Note 9. The Note 9's from Verizon are unlocked. Even with the Pixel 3, once it was activated with a Verizon SIM, it was then automatically carrier unlocked. So if you buy a used VZW Note 9 from eBay, its already been activated on Verizon, so no worries.
Just be careful buying off eBay. If its still under contract and the seller stops making payments, it will be blacklisted.
Why buy a Verizon version to use on AT&T?

They buy on Verizon because Verizon offers better deals. Then they want to use the devices on other networks. But since Note only has A firmware, not B, it's an annoying process for those who haven't flashed before.
AS to your second question: ATT doesn't allow Wi-Fi Calling nor voice over LTE on unlocked devices. So many ending putting up with their bloat in order to get those features.

It used to be easier. Verizon would often offer buy one get one free on Samsung and LG devices. You had to sign up for new service and put the phones on a payment plan. But the second phone uses to actually be free, not just bill credits. And you could pay off the first one and cancel your service.
I one time bought four Galaxy S7s when they were brand new, started four lines of service with Verizon, then paid off the phones and cancelled the service. Then I sold all four phones and netted about a thousand dollar profit off the deal.
Did the same thing with the LG G4 with Verizon when they offered $600 prepaid gift cards for each phone you bought.
Now Verizon, like all other carriers, lock you in with bill credits.
As they say, all good things must come to an end.

Verizon note 9 on AT&T
I'm using an unlocked Verizon note 9 512gb 8gb ram on AT&T and amazingly everything works. Wifi calling, video calling, volte. Even went to UbreakIfix and they installed Android 10 onto the phone. When I put the Sim card into the phone it loaded all the AT&T software on the phone and I was good. The great thing about Verizon unlocked phones are that they have the full CDMA and GSM capabilities so you can use them on any carrier. It wasn't a hassle at all to do.
