i'm a total noob at SGS and Android.
can anyone tell me what things i need to do to use most of my SGS?
and also tell me about rooting and updating the Android OS, do i always have to do the rooting process everytime i update my Android OS?
i just totally need someone who can guide me from the very start.
EDIT:
Model Number: GT-I9003
Baseband version: I9003JXKP3
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-CL694758

Build Number: GINGERBREAD.JPKPA
i can't seem to find any kernel that is suited for my phone in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1225879
does this mean i can't root or install custom ROM's?
I suggest you start by reading this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939752 and

Yeah there are many threads to read from. I suggest trying either DarkyRom 10.4.2 or CyanogenMod 7.1
ICS isn't really noob friendly atm.

give me a good reason why i should stay with a stock firmware?
what about those Custom ROMs?
some of them are very interesting to try.
i might even re-partition my SGS, so i can learn how to update, root, and install ROM's myself.
i'm not even sure if my phone already has a MOD in it or if its already rooted, i still don't have it now. but i'll have it this weekend.

Each ROM is customised differently with different features. Basically stay stock if you do not know what features you want.
DO NOT flash a any ROM until you have backed up your EFS folder (google hint = IMEI).
If you ask what is your EFS folder you are not ready for a non stock ROM.
On most proper instructions for flashing a rom, EFS backup step is compulsory.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
If you really need a reason to stay on stock:
1. You need to get used to the phone.
2. You never flashed SGS until now.
3. You have not read anything the other forum colleagues gave you.
4. You did not even tried to search the forums before posting this.
5. You might brick the device and then get back here and complain.
Need more? Sorry, but before posting you, and others that want everything on a plate, should use search and read everything posted here.
The "Galaxy S I9000 General" section clearly says: Discussion about the Samsung Galaxy S I9000 (tips & tricks, etc)
Every custom rom has a "How To" section in the OP. Also, every rom has a "What to do in case of" section. So you can try it on your own. There were cases in which the owner hardbricked the device in the first 45 minutes after he received it. So be careful.
i don't know what EFS even mean.
i'm just lazy to read all of it and there's not much i can understand.
so maybe you're all right that i stay with the stock firmware.
my phone still hasn't arrived, i'll just post here again what firmware it has and how should i update it.
btw, one more thing, so custom ROM's acts like a customized Android firmware, is that right?
and thanks for everyone who replies here and gives me their advices.

This has been covered on many threads/forums. Samsungs stance is that the hardware in the SGS 1 can not run with Touchwiz on top of ICS

Again many this has been covered on many threads relating to flashing ICS ROMS in particular. Flashing can result in the IMEI number being over written Your IMEI is stored encripted in a file contained in the EFS folder (IMEI = unique number that identifies your handset on the mobile networks) and then not being able to make or recieve phone calls in extreme examples to random apps downloading from google play or not able to access google play at all.
For more info on this i strongly suggest that you google "backing up EFS folder" and "backing up IMEI"

but there's a custom ROM that has been leaked that looks like Android 4 (ICS).
will there be a Android 2.4?
i never knew that Android needs a lot of work compared to iOS where it just needs to be jailbreak for you to have the freebies and to be open source.
Iphones run on a common HARDWARE
Android have many different versions of hardware ie Samsung, HTC etc etc etc
Each android phone requires the base code of Android to be customised with device specific drivers etc hence the difference between Android and Iphones.
Your wording is exactly that "CUSTOM" meaning not a Samsung ROM.
As stated before Samsungs stance with the SGS 1 is that they will not release ICS for the handset as there is not enough available RAM (memory) for ICS and their Touchwiz apps
i think i want to install a ROM if i get my Galaxy S by tomorrow.
which one is much better?
CyanogenMOD or DarkyROM?

*** AS I SAID EARLIER I WILL UPDATE THIS OP (Original Post) IN ORDER TO REFLECT ANY INFORMATION THAT COULD BE OF INTEREST ON THE SUBJECT ***
Hi there!
I have bought my device a couple week ago and since I did not know about knox, I just allowed Samsung to install the 4.3 update that was pushed to my device.
I have since decided I want a custom ROM on my phone, and when I started researching, I found out pretty quickly that knox may cause issues.
I don't really care about voiding my warranty, because I have now tested the device and made sure it is works, and I'm usually careful about what I flash.
The thing is, I have read so many things about knox that I don't know what's true and what's not. Unfortunately I don't have all the links to everything I've read, but i'll update this OP with the links later (some posts were worth reading and very interesting)
So, what I've read about once you've got knox:
- You cannot get rid of it (everyone pretty much agree on this)
- There are ways to root without tripping knox to 0x1, so you keep your warranty, but what about unrooting? Or do you just flash a stock rom not rooted? I guess you keep the bootloader as it is?
- even flashing stock 4.3 will trip knox (really? always)
- if you have knox, you cannot flash anything below 4.3, even custom ROMs, or you'll have issues with wifi, etc. (this is what I've read somewhere, what seems to be a fact is that if you try to downgrade the bootloaer to anything smaller then you may break wifi and other features)
- and it gets better: once you've got knox, if you flash a 4.4 ROM (custom, of course, since there is no 4.4 stock for our device yet), there's no going back to anything smaller (not even 4.3)
Some of the above statements are clearly facts at the present time, until knox is cracked, if it is ever, but some of it sounds like BS, or at least i hope it is, because otherwise I'm not about to flash anything :-/
And this is just the beginning, I'll keep updating this post, and I'll try to separate fiction from facts. anyway, feel free to comment on these and give me answers if you know things for a fact (no guesses please).
Now I gotta go, sorry!
Cheers,
fa
Edit:
You will find a lot of threads on knox especially in the Galaxy S4 and Note 3 forums. But I guess most of the info on how knox works is valid for our device as well (I9305).
A lot of people seem to place a lot of hope in one of the greatest Android devs: Chainfire.
Here are a few links with info on knox, for those who like to read:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2447832
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2597774
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2569349
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2447832 <== This is actually a thread you want to follow. Very interesting, but there's a lot to read. If a solution comes to get rid of knox, that's probably one of the first places on XDA where they'll talk about it.
It would be great to know if there is hope to see a knox removal tool.
Meanwhile, I see the following different scenarios. Could you share your experience and tell me how it works for you? As answers trickle in, I'll update this post with the answers themselves or links to the posts where the answer is provided:
1) You don't have knox: lucky you, enjoy and DO NOT UPDATE TO 4.3 or flash a 4.3 ROM with knox bootloader, or you will one day regret it!
2) You have knox. So if I got it right, there is no way to change your bootloader, but there are various scenarios:
a) you don't care because you're happy with stock and no root (then keep moving, nothing to see here, I wonder why you are even reading this...)
b) you want to keep your stock ROM and default kernel, but you want to root. I have read many threads where it is said to be possible. WHAT'S THE BEST WAY FOR THIS?
c) you want to keep your stock ROM but you want another kernel: IS THIS POSSIBLE, and if so, WHAT KERNEL WORKS/DOESN'T WORK?
d) you want to get rid of the whole Samsung ROM, so you want to flash a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP) and a custom ROM/Kernel. So what works, and what does knox prevent you to do in that case?
Cheers,
Fa

This is an idea, fabecoool. There would be nothing wrong if someone is responsible for making a guide/tutorial/ to our terminals in version 4.3 Stock with all this questions. There are many people who are lost right now and this would be helpful.
Many people do not know that really brings the version 4.3 and this will help them not to get into trouble.

Flashing stock wont trip knox. Once ur on official 4.4 with new bootloader u wont be able to downgrade no matter where u come from. Knox or no knox. Official 4.4 will have a new bootloader which prevents u from downgrading. Sounds like apple doesnt it. Lol

Do you mean that you won't be able to downgrade to a stock ROM smaller than 4.4, or to a ROM (included custom ROMs) smaller than 4.4.
Anyway, it does sound like Apple indeed.

Well yes, you're lucky. Especially if you care about custom roms, if you do, don't flash official stock 4.3. Even if you like the Samsung UI (touchwiz), I would recommand you find a 4.3 stock without Knox. Just look for it in the forum.

Greetings!
There is a lot of paranoia theme Knox, from my point of view the only problem is the warranty for ODIN and flash an earlier version, I do not see another problem. However, those who want to return to a previous version do through recovery, I've done it many times and have not had any problems (have a look at my signature) those ZIP'S I've modified to share. Try!
Hey guys, I am a newbie here. Also i don't know much about android. So please forgive me if I ask or say something stupid or childish.
I am from India and I have a samsung galaxy S advance I9070.I recently updated it to official jellybean via kies(Baseband version-I9070DDULP8)(Not a rooted device)
It is very slow and hangs a lot with frequent restarts.I heard that the official firmware xxlpz4.1.2 is comparitevely bug free and more stable and I wanted to try it out.But I couldn't find a firmware for it.I must have searched about 30 sites to download this firmware and all of them takes me to a hotfile link which is dead:crying:.Its like this firmware doesn't exist anymore.
Anyone knows where I can get this firmware? Please help me.
Also can u guys please tell me which is the latest and most bug free version of jellybean available(official one) for s advance.
And also where to get the firmware.

Here we go: XXLPZ - SER download or here, but IMO you not doing so much related skip bugs.
Most of us, at the beginning, is debloating the unnecessary files, flash custom kernel (now you don't have too much for choose, only Cocafe's kernel) and so on.
But its your choice to flash other baseband.
Good luck

Unfortunately both of your link is also dead.Actually can you suggest to me which is the most stable jelly bean official firmware available and where to get it.For now I would like to stick to the official ones, since I am very unexperienced in these matters.
(Actually I dont even know how to debloat the unnecessary files and also didnt understand what you meant by flashing custom kernel and what is Cocafe.I mean I know what it is to flash a custom rom but dont know anything about kernel or even what kernel means.P.S- I believe flashing a custom rom is installing a developer modified version of an android version like jellybean or kitkat via odin which is possible only after you do a process called root in your phone and also which is compatible with your phone)
I appologise if I sounded stupid.Being a doctor I know very little about the technical stuffs.
Thank you for spending your valuable time for me.I really appreciate it.

I'm not sure that the files have been released for manual flashing yet.
Can you be more specific on the current state of your device... It's wiped and unusable? What have you tried flashing exactly? Did you try to flash an older version of android?
And what All have you tried to do.
And what version were you on before all this?
And how were you rooted exactly?
Just trying to see the whole picture here. Need all this info to really help... Hopefully.
At this point, you may be waiting until the files are out for flashing.... Unless your answers to these questions change something. ?

I suggest you not do anything else until you've researched this a bit more.
No, you can't downgrade safely. You could brick your device trying, or later by taking an OTA.
I don't, and many others, ever suggest downgrading. It's very dangerous and has left many with serious problems, or even unusable devices.
That said. Why are you trying to unroot exactly?
Also... You can only flash the 4.4.4 files now. They probably aren't available yet so you will need to be patient. If CM is working for you now, that's great.... But you may be stuck like that until the SBF files are out for 4.4.4....then you can flash it with RSDLite or fastboot.
I don't see you have any other safe options.

There are some sites that host the leaked roms listed HERE -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/info-tip-web-sites-official-leaked-roms-t2923347
You'll want to check ALL of the links.
This might work -> http://www.filefactory.com/file/292..._4.4.4_KXA21.12-L1.26_54_cid7_CFC_1FF.xml.zip

1. You need to be unlock the bootloader
2. Next You need root your device and install custom recovery . Follw the links it can help you:
Unlock boot loader : http://www.idroidspace.com/how-to-unlock-moto-x-bootloader-officially-all-carriers/
For root : http://www.reddit.com/r/MotoX/comments/20j27k/the_ultimate_moto_x_root_thread/
if you have ANY doubtS CHECK IN THE PORTAL.
Everything is covered here on XDA... Much easier to get help if you stay on this site for guides.
Like this one for unlocking and installing recovery help...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/ref-complete-moto-x-guides-information-t2603358
Not sure why anyone would need to send people to other websites for these basic things. ?

I already have my boot loader unlocked and rooted device.. as I'm using krypton ROM for quite a long now.
So plz give link to CM11 ROM for xt1052

There's only one cm rom in the development section. And unless there's been a recent change, it's been discontinued, and has bugs.

How many phones have you bricked? I'm sorry, but I remember many of your posts with big problems in the past. You seem to ignore most advice. No offense intended.... But it's true.
Cause this one will brick if you ever take an ota. Practically guaranteed.
Hope you realize that? ?
Also.... Everyone gets lucky occasionally.... But the X section is filled with threads from people who didn't get lucky.
So please never recommend anyone try it. You don't want to be responsible for them being unlucky and destroying their toy. Right? ?

i don t recommend it like we speak in another thread.
i just tell that this is possible.
i bricked the device for others reasons and not for downgrade.
but like u say if the people don t know how to do it or what s the risk to do it : DON T DOWNGRADE.

You have a fitting user name. ?
Seriously, with some people not knowing what they are doing... And with communication misunderstandings due to language barriers and what not...
If someone asks you can they safely downgrade.... Just say no. ?
Cause it's never safe. You're adventure isn't necessarily over either.... If you take an ota accidentally or on purpose... You might be phone shopping. ?
That's all I'll say on that.
Hi guys, apologies if I'm a noob here, I'm having a few problems with my old SIII mini VE (i8200N). It was working fine, but in trying to flash a new ROM I've come a bit unstuck.
The phone has working recovery, which I was using to flash the ROM, it is TWRP v2.7.0.1, kinda old, but I can't find a better version unfortunately - if anyone has one I would appreciate it. Or indeed a different and better recovery, if you don't have TWRP.
Everytime I flash a ROM I get a message 'Kernel does not have support for reading SELInus contexts' - it says it is installing but ends super-quick, and nothing has changed. I have tried a few different ROMs always same kessage (and yes, I am aware of the difference between Golden and this version of the phone - the ROMs are compatible).
I can get the phone to respond to ADB and ODIN, so I'm generally OK, just have no OS at the moment. Tried sideloading it, but no joy.
I wouldn't mind having the original UK firmware back but sadly I can't get it back off the sammobile site - without some horrible file-share trying to install malware. Again, a copy would be great.
I can flash root, no problem, just not the actually ROM itself.
I wouldn't mind putting something decent on it, Lineage or RR or CM but I would settle right now just for a working phone!
I appreciate any help
:good:
