The lag seen with ADW is really starting to annoy me. At first I was ultra happy with the phone, but then some of my friends with iphone 4s pointed out how choppy the switching of homescreens was on the N1 along with the stutter seen on the app drawer. I have googled everything and cant find a fix. I already tried doing the recomended settings from the link below, but there is still lag. Will switching to launcher pro fix my issues? I am hesitant to switch because I love that ADW has the look of the stock froyo launcher, is it even possible to have the stock dock look in launcher pro?

Ignorance is bliss...
Now ask your friends with iPhone to show you an app that will automatically turn off their WiFi and turn on BT when they leave their home, for example. Then ask them to show you live wallpaper on their phones. When they fail, chill out and understand that you can't fix it. Android launchers aren't capable of seamless scrolling, because the system behind them wasn't meant for pretty graphics.
You're only 2346851 in number to ask this question.

Haha so true, ignorance is great. Yea i know alot of people had similar questions, but all the threads i found were not for N1s and they were pretty old, figured out some genius must have done something about it since just about everything else has been done on these xda forums. I just hate seeing wasted potential. The snapdragon and 512mb ram is more than enough horsepower to get simple smooth scrolling down. Just wish there was some type of gpu acceleration support.
By the way how do you turn off the wifi automatically when you leave home? I rely on the powercontrol widget.
I had a similar point from an iPhone user, I barely noticed it - and then I pointed out I was running a custom launcher (launcher pro) with a TON of widgets and animated wallpaper. Since then an update has made it silky smooth.
There are a few themes in launcher pro, default froyo is one - I use wide froyo which gives me:
phone-contacts-app-drawer-sms-browser
buttons.
Gingerbread should help in this department, or so they say. Currently the best the launchers can do still has a hiccup or two from time to time. Personally, I don't even notice it, using LauncherPro, as the poster above me, with all 7 screens full of icons and widgets, and Starfield wallpaper.
Locale. It's a great concept app. I used it, but stopped - now I just keep BT and WiFi constantly on (BT almost doesn't drain battery - usually less than 2% of the power - and WiFi is present at home and at work, so I turn it off only when the phone is expected to last long in places where no WiFi is found). Since I don't have other uses - like turning down the volume automatically in specific places, etc - I stopped using it.

Have you changed the app drawer to 4 apps per row? I remember 5 per row being set on cm6, that will make some difference.
Yes, launcher Pro has a Froyo dock look. In the settings its called "froyo" I think. It looks pretty good, a little different than ADW.

Yea i did change it to 4 apps per row, and it did help a little. Im going to test out launcher pro. Is there anything i should know about switching launchers and running cyanogen 6? If i dont like launcher pro will it be easy to switch back? Some places said that adw still runs in the background and that i have to uninstall adw for it to not hog any resources.

You can easily switch back. A lot of people seems to be experiencing a little lag with adw in the latest CM version. Launcher pro doesn't have this issue.
I'm not sure about Adw running in the background, but you can easily uninstall it using titanium backup.
I just played around with launcherpro and im not impressed. There was still lag, though it could have been because i didnt set a default launcher and adw was still running in the background. The switching between the homescreens was a little smoother, but thats because it did it alot slower. I prefer the more stock look that adw offers. On launcher pro the screens had 4x4 columns/rows but i didnt like the grid spacing. For some reason my beautiful widgets weather/clock was 20% smaller in size compared to ADW. Not sure why the widgets and icon sizes are smaller in launcherpro (i kept switching back and forth between launchers to compare).

My experience is that Launcher pro is generally smoother and faster than ADW. I believe the newer versions of ADW have improved quite a bit, but LP still gets my vote.
However since the 22x nightlies as well as the official 6.1RC1, I have been experiencing some lags no matter which launcher I am using
If you need to stay with CM, you might wanna try another kernel, it helps

I bought my nexus with cm6 already installed, and still havent bothered updating to the newest 6.1 version. Mainly im just waiting till the end of the month. Dont want to mess anything up and i need my phone to be fully functional till then. All i know is that in the sd card I saw a clockworkmod file, so im assuming thats the backup. I will go into installing custom roms probably when gingerbread is released. I might try installing launcher pro again and uninstalling adw fully and see if that fixes the lag. I like ADW and just wish the app scrolling was a little more smooth.
**** I just found out that my ADW version was 1.0.1, and there have many updates since then. I found a 1.2.0 version and will test that out. http://code.google.com/p/adw-launcher-android/downloads/list
Learn to play with your N1. Once you're proficient, you could easily do partial wipes and ROM flips inside of 5mins.
Heck, if you've got a good wifi you might be able to wipe full and restore inside of 10 mins.
Point being, you'd feel safer about trying/looking at changes like a new different launcher and ROMs, knowing that you can flip back to a solid setup with all your data and apps intact.
This play is part of the beauty in the N1.

Couldn't agree more I used to juggle roms and now I use miuimod with lpp with the screen cache turned off and if I have to compete against a iPhone showdown then I put my min CPU at 384 and it should be as smooth if not smoother. n1 is great for tinkering

also turning off the transparency in the drawer should help improve smoothness
Found out the cause of the problem was live wallpapers. On launcher pro, as soon as live wallpaper was disabled it ran like butter. I was hoping to get live wallpapers to work also, but having lag is not a good trade off.

A lot of it depends on the specific wallpaper in question. Slower, more subtle animations tend to behave better (and use less battery) than some of the more intense ones. I recommend one called Substrate - it slowly evolves and changes, but keeps the homescreen transitions very smooth and snappy.
I'm currently running one called "better matrix" or something similar that is very eye catching but doesn't bog things down too much.
Can somebody try running a different launcher for me? Thanks

I just got into a friend's HD. It's proving to be quite a hassle to get another launcher running. Tried Launcher Pro just for kicks, and I don't even get an option to choose my launcher after pressing the home button. Defaults can't be cleared from the Applications>Installed Applications menu for the Kindle Launcher. Trying Nova or Apex next but it doesn't look good.
I'm glad I got my Nexus 7 after looking at this Amazon-ridden mess.
If I cant even install a launcher I probably wont buy one. My nexus was good, but it has slowed down, and has screen ripple and screen lift
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah, just got ADB working and tried to install Nova that way. No luck.
I've had my Nex7 for a month or so now and it's still running smoothly. I do change my ROM often though. The only hardware issue I've noticed is some issues with the digitizer. It seems to touch things when it's sitting. It may be my screen protector but it seems like a widespread issue.
Edit Again: Make sure your back housing is secured correctly. I noticed mine was starting to ripple quite badly (after I got curious and removed the back cover) until I gave the back cover a good squeeze all the way around the device. It went away then. I've also read adjusting the corner screws under the cover fixes some of the ripple, LCD bleed, and lifting of the digitizer.
I tried some of that but didnt seem to work. Thank you for that. Shame because I really want too. I am experiencing lag that bothers me the most. Thank you

Try ADW Launcher Ex apk from 4shared.com.
It is running fine on my kfhd. I don't dare hit the home button or reboot afterwards, I'll just put it to sleep and hopefully be able to enjoy this launcher with ICS going forward and not the carousel.
I'll add widgets and a theme soon and see what happens.
Would the Default App Manager application from the Play Store not solve the problem of not being able to select a different launcher?

Eh? I am running ADW launcher ex and it works fine. The home button just takes you back to the stock amazon launcher but then you just start up ADW again through the icon. It's a pain having that extra step since you can't change default but it's still 100x better than the amazon carousel.
Well initially I wasn't sure what would happen if I hit the home key or turned off the KFHD, I didn't want to lose the alternate launcher.
I know now it created an icon in the apps to get that launcher back when you want it. Better yet, I just leave the icon first in my carousel to get access! It is a million times better than the carousel but I think I remember from the first KF, I had to go back and clean up the carousel since the alternate launcher leaves a trail of what one does so I just did it when I turned my KF off at night for good.

Thanks for the tip. ADW is working great for me. Well, maybe not as good as it was. In the process of trying to change the wallpaper it got stuck on the Yellow Flowers.. I've cleared data, cleared cache and uninstalled and reinstalled. Heck, I'd be happy now with the wallpaper that first installed on it. I really like the ADW launcher compared to Amazon. Not sure I can hang with the yellow flowered wallpaper tho. Any ideas?

I don't mean to troll and please don't consider this a personal attack or anything but in a previous post you referred to the KFHD as an "Amazon-ridden mess" and are glad you got your N7 but you seem to put up with a lot just to have the N7....i.e. ghost touches with the digitizer, ripple, screen bleed , screen lifting not to mention fragile screen glass being reported in other XDA threads. The other poster complains of lagging which you fob off as not much of an issue but there is an entire thread on XDA devoted to this and what seems to be either an IO issue to the memory or a real problem with the type of memory being used. Yes, we know the KFHD is a closed ecosystem and many Android devotees would walk across glass before buying such a thing but you still need to have some perspective. Too many here seem to excuse a lot of issues with the N7 just because it is pure Android. The things you excuse in an N7 seem to me to be severe hardware issues. You and others don't seem to mind cause it's pure Jelly Bean. I'm willing to put up with some software limitations as long as I can sideload apps just to get what seems to me to be superior hardware and what looks like superior build quality. I can wait for the unlocked bootloader.

Download the apk file for ADW Launcher Ex from 4shared.com and install it. Once you open it, it will create an icon automatically afterwards.

Hi Everyone,
Just got my Droid Turbo last night (Best Buy edition, no verizon branding, amazing.) I am having an issue with Nova Launcher and setting a photo as my background through Nova. I pick my picture and crop the area i want to use and set it. It looks like it goes through properly, but then when the home screen comes up, the picture is extremely zoomed in, to the point where all I see is a color.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
Thanks,
Nick

A. The BL from Verizon is also not branded...
B. Set your wallpaper through the stock wallpaper app, then select your image through that - it sets it full resolution.
Nova sucks with setting wallpaper, makes you select a certain area that fits portrait and landscape

I have to disagree with you on the nova wallpaper issue. I use nova, and you can still choose other options other than nova wallpaper option. Nova if anything is superior to others because of the support and updates it gets. I been actively using since the first release and it only gets better.
ccheww, that worked, thanks!
the_rooter: I haven't had a problem with any of my previous devices with setting the wallpaper with Nova, just this one. I had Droid DNA and LG G2 with Nova with no issues. Just this one it doesn't seem to work well.

In response to what your saying - its exactly what I was saying....
At Nove Home Screen:
Long Press > Wallpapers > Then you can select from any source.... (in this case I told him to select the default gallery option because he clearly wants to avoid scaling and resizing)
And yes, Nova is far superior to anything else I can think of...
And I still stand by my apprehension - Such a simple task for the developers to fix this.... yet they dont... it doesnt really need to be fixed in my opinion, just bugs me that they ignore it.
Has anyone got any alternative launcher working on this, I don't like the big icons filling up my home screen and the app drawer.
Thanks in advance.
I have Nova installed and running for the same reason but as soon as I try to add a widget it crashes and reverts to stock launcher
Why not try Nova Launcher it has a lot of customisation options.
First thing I did was install Nova Launcher
Nova for me and I have not experienced any crashes with widgets.
Just installed newest Version Nova Prime and Tesla Unread. Works perfect
Using Action Launcher .
originally using Action launcher using an imported layout and it kept crashing, but since resetting layout it seems stable.
worst thing about huawei phones is how they manage launchers and keep forcing their launcher on you
try also the microsoft launcher...it's amazing... used nova before but it's so cute and minimalistic. I like it.
I'm using nova (prime) and a android p theme. I had a crash when adding widgets once, but now it works fine.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I have a paid version of Nova but it never occurred to me to try it first. I am using it now and I like it, will give the Microsoft launcher a try also.
cheers

It seems to be Huawei specific widgets that bork Nova.
Weather Underground is fine, the Huawei Weather widget really upsets Nova, I've had to wipe the app data just to get Nova to restart
I've submitted a crash report and dump to Tesla Coil, so let's see what happens
I think for emui, you need to use third parties widgets if using nova launcher. Some of the emui widgets will cause crash....
anyone using magisk could try and flash the pixel launcher, thats what i plan to do once i get the phone
really love the pixel launcher on my 5T

Hi there, did you do anything specific to get Action Launcher to work in the first place ? i installed and it just crashes immediately when i try and run it (i've sent a bug report to AL dev team).
No not really.
I reset cache
Completely uninstalled and then reinstalled
Been stable ever since
Sorry I can't be of any more help
I have been using Nova Launcher for years but have switched to Microsoft Launcher as of recent and I have to say that I really enjoy it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.launcher
P.S Just make sure to change default search engine from Bing back to Google and desactivate Cortana

Did the same for me no matter what I tried! Using nova now which I'm more than happy with
I use Lawnchair Launcher + Lawnfeed
Nova is pretty awful on the P20 looks like I will be changing away for the first time in years. Previously had on all my phones including the Pixel 2XL.
3rd party widgets just aren't auto-updating. Another Widget, was stuck on yesterdays event, Agenda Widget doesn't display my full calendar and just says "Loading" guess it's time to find something else. Looked at Microsoft Launcher but don't like the way you can't hide the homescreen indicator taking up space at the bottom and not looking clean like I want.
Pixel Launcher works great.
I have been trying out different launchers on my S8. Let me know of any you are familiar with or recommend.
Microsoft Launcher: I am currently using this and pleasantly surprised. I don't login to Microsoft because I don't use those services but see how it could be a good thing for those that do. MS has made a very nice tablet launcher experience. Even the MS Start news app works well enough as a Google Now replacement. I love to hide junk news sources I don't want to read, and can request fewer articles on topics of interest. There are ads in the feed but at least they are subtle and have an indicator so you don't have to click. Loading news is sometimes slow but it could be my connection.
Smart Launcher: looks great but it is a subscription service to reap the full functionality. I saw that they also use MS Smart but it doesn't seem to work well in that launcher. I can't get my head around the launcher subscription service revenue model, who would pay monthly, or the value add to do so.
Nova Launcher: my go-to on phones. However, the tablet experience isn't great. I couldn't figure out how to move the dock to the bottom in landscape.
Apex Launcher: seems nice but also has a subscription model. I didn't spend much time with it.
Action Launcher: another I used for years on phones before switching to Nova. I also couldn't figure out how to move the dock to the bottom in landscape.
If I'm gonna be completely honest, I'm super fond of the OneUI launcher and have been using that instead of Nova for a couple of weeks now. Samsung has made OneUI even better in the coming updates, so I just don't even change it now.
@SavXL I am in total agreement. OneUI 4.1 has evolved very well. I had a Samsung Note 9 with the earlier OUI versions which I didn't prefer over Nova.
As a launcher hopper, I will use the OneUI launcher again. Icon pack support would be a nice addition.

Indeed! I used Theme Store in the past.
From within OUI launcher icon preferences vs. theme store is my wish for installing icon packs. To be fair, Google's pixel launcher doesn't allow this either.
If you are really advanced, use total launcher and you won't regret it.. Basically you can re create any launcher with it. But 1st time you use it, it's look awful.. By far the most advanced launcher right now if you give it time to understand what you can do with it. But i still use nova when i want something simple to use it in 5 minutes.
Here an example of my theme i created in total launcher. I inspired from htc. (I could create exactly the same launcher htc had if i wanted):

Transferring was a breeze. The backup function worked like a charm -- all the settings were transferred from my old to the new tablet. And it copied the icons for all the apps -- even those not yet installed. Icon locations and grouped icons were all in the same place they were on the old tablet. Those icons for not installed apps were gray, and clicking them brings a message asking if you want to install them. If you say yes, it opens the app in the Play Store. Then after they install, it goes to full color. For sideloaded apps, just install and the icons turn active. This made it easy to install all the apps I had before. No missing aps.
As far as the launcher goes, all the settings, layouts and defaults are the same. I think the only thing I had to manually install widgets that were on apps that weren't yet installed when I restored the backup on the new tablet.

Niagara Launcher.
For me it's the best Launcher after testing so many alternatives.
Switched from Nova to Niagara and never looked back.
