Same here, after upgrading the phone tele lens does not work 4k video zoom 5x-10x, quality poor.
8.1 Oreo worked better (not complaining about it)

Any resolution for this problem?
Or waiting huawei fix this ?
I downgrade my phone back to version 8.1.0.161 and the tele lens (zoom) works again when video is taken 4k uhd quality.
I don't know is it feature or some bug for version 9.
Now I am waiting for the OTA upgrade to 9 so i can see how the camera works.
Previous 9 update came through FF.
Hi all, I've upgraded to pie yesterday by OTA and sadly the 4k mode does not allow optical zoom anymore. It has even more bugs than the Android 8. I honestly don't even know what Huawei's programmers even do apart from crippling these phones with every update.
Now upgraded to 9 version (ota update) and 4k video zoom does not work with the telephoto lens.
Hopefully Huawei people will fix in future updates that the telephoto lens will work with 4k video as in version 8.1.

Yes, where you downloaded, and it's not clear if for you in 4k works the zoom with tele lenses... Or only works zoom.....
Yep, have p20 pro, went out to do some 4k video and found the 3x zoom no longer works also, had to downsize the video to full hd. The phone's not even a year old it seems and they're already neglecting it. I'm disappointed.

problem with the camera is, no more tele cam for 4k, and no more video stabilization (both optical and electrical) for any resolutions. That sucks.

Sorry, but I'm on 9.0.0.163 and no issues like you. I can zoom in every resolution, we have got a 1x 3x 5x switch in every mode video, camera and front camera, and of course they work. The stabilization is always on and you cannot turn off in every mode also 4k but I can't say if ois or eis... Or both
Just some shaking added in some situations when you keep the camera steady in video mode.

Are you sure?
Bcs if you just test zoom in 4k is working, but if you start record/press button record in zoom 3x or 5x nah thats problem, the quality video didnt smooth/tele cam didnt work if you start recording
about my post I'm sure 100%
I've tried also, right now, recording in 4k : it works if i press 3x or 5x I get an instant zoom.
About tele : i've done many tests the results are that :
using 3x 5x switch to tele sensor if you point to distant subject like you are outdoor
if you are indoor it'll stay on main sensor at any zoom level.
sometimes indoor gives you a switch to tele but this happens few times only.
Now after these tests I'm very happy more than before !! PIE = great camera evolution ( and also for selfies).
what they really miss is a BW video mode with BW sensor and a real slow motion..
Here's a screenshot video of my phone screen where the telephoto lens problem appears when recording 4k video.

You use 10x zoom, its digital zoom. Of course it is bad quality. Tele lens is 3x zoom.

Fault is in the pie update, version 8.1 worked perfectly. Do the same with 3x and 5x zoom, the telephoto lens does not work when recording in 4k quality. Lower quality (1080p) works with telephoto lens when recording video.

I'm sorry for you, but after update, mine works OK as I told you.
Also I find fantastic that it recognizes indoor scene (no tele sensor) from outdoor or very far objects (switch to Tele sensor)
Just I can say that sometimes we may want Tele sensor indoor and we cannot change it manually...

I am having some minor and major bugs with my new Nokia 7 Plus camera.
First of all while recording videos even in quiet rooms the audio track is filled with a loud hiss. Is that normal, or a hardware fault? Test-Video
Secondly i have a strange bug: as soon as i use the camera zoom in my stock camera app, the zoom won't work for any other app anymore, until i reboot my device (snapchat, whatsapp, instagram). After a reboot the zoom is working fine for those apps, but as soon as i start the stock camera app and use the zoom, it stops working again for those apps until i reboot.
In the end i would like to know if there is any possibility to enable OZO Audio System wide and not only in the stock camera app?

Hey guys, after 4 days of using my brand new Nokia 7 plus i have encounterd several problems, mostly regarding the camera.
I have problems over several apps:
- Instagram no sound in stories while in vibration mode.
- Snapchat video quality is very very poor and pixilated
- Camera Zoom in Instagram, Snapchat and Whatsapp sometimes works and sometimes not.
- Stock Camera app, sometimes there are glitches when the camera is switching from wide to tele in lowlight. Overall video performance is not that good as expected to be. Also Google Camera apk delivers better results for me, so this could be a software issue as well.
- Playstore and Recent apps window sometimes lags
Anyone else experiencing those bugs?

I notice some stutters too when using recent apps. I guess that could be fixed with optimization. Let's hope that they'll do that. I have no issues with camera, I'm pretty pleased with it.
Some Finnish users have reported noise issues in video recordings. Even in quiet rooms the audio track is filled with a loud hiss. It seems that this problem is presisten but only in few devices. That could suggest that there's some faulty hardware in stock.

While filming this there was no wind nor waterfall near by. The background hiss sounds like a static mono noise.
Having OZO audio only in stock camera and not even a dedicated audio recording tool is *really* pissing me off. Also, today I shoot a video at 1080p and noticed that the audio is a tiny bit out of sync. Is there any Nokia feedback app to report this issues?

Using Mobile Nokia Care default app to ask about enabling OZO Audio System wide in phone and not only in camera stock app and their reply was: "At the moment, that is not possible, since the OZO technology needs to be licensed"
So I asked them to recored this as a request to be done in a future system update.
So I hope it will happen soon because recording audio without using OZO is really bad
Nokia 7 plus Google camera slow motion not working
Sorry to bring back a dead thread but I'm also getting the Snapchat/Instagram/Messenger zoom issue. It either zooms fine, jumps between 2 zoom points (I'm guessing jumping between the two cameras) or it doesn't zoom at all. It's getting irritating.

I think that Sony IMX362 and Samsung S5K2L7 are almost the same sensor. Both of them 7.06 mm (1/2.6") sensor size, 1,4 μm pixel size, 4032 x 3024 (12,2 MP) resolution and dual pixel PDA. How are you so sure that Nokia 7 Plus uses IMX362? Maybe Nokia does the same as some Xiaomi and Samsung smartphones, that use a Sony sensor in some batches and its Samsung equivalent in other batches
Anyway, I cannot believe that Nokia could have implemented a front 4 MP sensor interpolated to 16 MP. It would make sense 3-4 years ago, when we were on the "MP rush", but today the price of camera modules doesn't depend on sensor resolution. In fact, most of the best smartphone cameras have 12 MP (iPhone XS, Pixel 3, Samsung S10) and in the other hand you have a lot of cheap chinese smartphones with 16 or 20 MP sensors, so it would be stupid to use an interpolated 4 MP sensor having a lot of 16 MP sensor at really low prices.

Nokia is indeed using the S5K2L7 (Wide) and S5K3M3 (Tele) sensor for the rear cameras of Nokia 8 Sirocco and Nokia 7 plus. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_8_Sirocco
In the MWC video ( https://youtu.be/BaUh9HgjJtQ?t=2170 ) of Nokia 7 plus, they announced that the camera would be the same.
The front camera on 8 Sirocco is S5K4E8.
If Nokia's pixel binning claims are true, then the front camera of 7 plus is most probably S5K3P9.
How did I arrive at the conclusion ?
Photo resolution taken with the front camera 4608 x 3456 which is the closer to the maximum resolution of S5K3P9.
So indeed the sensor on front is a 16MP with Tetracell technology.
Heavy problems with white balance always, the video is terrible with the tertible stabilization and noise even in good ligth. For me video is unusable.
So the zoom bug also affects other apps. Hehe. That's interesting and annoying at the same time.
How does the zoom actually work?
From the specs both colour lenses are fixed, so below 3 times, is this simply digital zoom on the wide lens?
At 3x it also does not seem to always switch to the telephoto lens. Why?
I bought the phone for the camera abilities but currently question whether they work as advertised.
One review mentioned Open Camera as a better alternative, so I tried that, but from testing, that seems to never use the telephoto lens in any conditions?
I notice as well that apps like Lightroom do not pick up an option for the second lens either.

Hi, I dont claim to be an expert, but I think I can answer your questions
Yes, any zoom level below 3x is effectively digital based. It's not a straight crop so you will get better results from using that zoom than cropping in to a wide shot later.
For 3x zoom will use the tele camera provided the subject is far enough away for it to focus, and there is enough light. i.e trying to take macro-type shots with the zoom lens is a no go, and in low light the software will use the big primary sensor as the tiny sensor used for the tele would just give a noisy mess of an image.
N.B: The image preview shown in the app when zooming doesn't always update to reflect the feed coming from the tele lens. (you can normally see it transition) when you actually take the image, it will use the correct lens for the conditions, even if the preview suggested otherwise.
Seems that third party apps can't access the other sensors, at least for now.
Finally, the same as above it true when recording video. Contrary to what some sites have reported the phone WILL switch to the tele camera for zoom levels of 3x+, and can do so whilst recording. The same applies as photos, 1-2.9x will be digital zoom (and for video is does appear to be a straight crop, no clever digi-zoom). In this range the quality is pretty poor, so try videoing a 1x or 3x only. (note the tele cam has ois which is great for shake-free video)
Thanks for thr clarification.
Think I understand better now what is happening!
I had also emailed Huawei support and their response was basically the same.
Think it would be good to have this clearer in reviews and spec sheets though.
I am generally happy with the camera but bought it to use the 3x a lot for close ups, which seems to be one scenario where it may not be using the actual tele lens in full.
Thank you!
I've been having same issue all day with my new P20 pro and been thinking that the phone or app is broken. So pleased the 3x works like that. I'll now try test it. ?
Thanks for giving this response. B&W sensor on it is insanely good so I was bummed by the broken 3x
Hi everyone,
I just reinstalled the Android 9 update on my dual sim p20 pro. When I tried to film in selfie mode with the highest resolution setting FHD+, I noticed a big horizontal line. Does anyone else experience the same glitch?
Hmm, no i dont have this but i guess this is why its called a beta update Have you tried to clear the camera cache and data?
Hi, I cleared it now but it seems to be the same. I did not have the beta update, I actually received the official 9.0.0.106 update. However, it seems to work just fine in open camera. So it seems to be a software issue for me...
Very interesting though. I just found out that if I activate stabilization in open camera, I get a similar effect but on the edges.
Wow, this phone has such garbage software. I hope this is the last thing I post about it but I just found out multpile things. First of all, all three lenses from the back are OIS capable but none of them use it except the telephoto lens, this means when zooming 3x (http://www.mobilenewsmag.com/huawei-lies-about-the-optical-image-stabilization-on-huawei-p20-pro/), but only in certain conditions. The green lines that appear on my selfie footage are from the digital stabilization algoryhtms badly applied. Also, when recording FULL HD, with 60 FPS, the telephoto lens does not work no matter how much you zoom. If, however, you select FULL HD with 30 FPS, digital stabilization kicks in for the wide lens, it crops my footage in order to compensate for the jittery movement instead of applying true OIS which it can do, and only then does the telephoto lens kick in at 3x zoom. Another "great" thing is that when filimg 4k, the crappy software also kicks in and crops my image making it much smaller than in live view, and it applies blurry digital stabilization... Worst decision to spend my money... never again buying chinese phones.
Guys did u noticed that the tele lens is not working while recording in 4k 30fps.. If u switch the lense between wide and normal u can notice that this is working but not with the Telelens. It just zoomed in with the normal lens and it looks terrible..
I've noticed this too and I thought that I was the only one having this problem
Anyone else ?
ShowBox Tutuapp Mobdro
It worked with my s9+ before.. Was able to capture brilliant moments in 4k with 30fps on my s9+
Works for me, at 60fps only the main one works, at 30fps all 3 can record in 4k.
The question is simple.
Sometimes it switches back and forth from the zoom lens to the main one and vice versa in lower light conditions.
Would be nice to have the option to manually select which one we want. Even tho the conditions are a bit darker the image would still look better with the zoom lens tho.
Btw I love the phone. Awesome piece of tech.

I'm mainly talking about the 5x optical one. In lower light it can switch to the other lens. It's more apparent with it's switching back and forth.

I found a way to trick it and switch to the zoom lense in low light conditions, zoom in to 5.1 instead of 5 and it will trigger the zoom lens.
I would also advise you to use the night mode while zooming in conditions where light isn't that sufficient.
Here are three images that I just took to show the difference. One is at x5 zoom, which used the regular lens, then at 5.1 which triggered the zoom lens, then also at 5.1 but in night mode.

In like really really low light conditions, it won't work as the zoom lens becomes useless, unless you switch to x10 zoom.
As for videos, make sure you're not using 1080 60fps,because even during daytime, the camera will never switch to the zoom lens, as it's not capable of shooting at 60 fps.
Yeah its still very hit or miss even in night mode. I'll be in a well lit room and zoom in one of the objects. It'll start off with the perdicope lens and then switch back to the other one. The picture quality is very different from both
It switches back and forth due to lighting availability when it focused on the subject.
If light is not enough, the 5x optical zoom will shift into digital zoom because the 3.5 aperture will be dark enough to produce good photos and the main camera with 1.6 aperture will take over. It is just like how samsung shifts its camera mode during night shot where its telephoto lens was taken over by main camera due to poor lighting condition.
Try to shoot it both (digital and optical)and you'll see on the exif file that it is shifting camera mode, one is with 1.6f and the other one is with 3.4f.
Based on my observation during a good lighting condition, the camera is doing the following:
1x to 4.9x is digital zoom (using main camera)
5x optical zoom (using periscope camera)
5.1x to 10x is hybrid lossless zoom (using periscope)
10.1x-50x digital zoom (using periscope)
For pictures in pro mode you can enable raw file and it will restrict you to only optical which will force the 5x zoom lens but you can't use any digital zooming
Maybe in pro mode using tripod and long exposure time
Thats weird, I have never seen my model switch lens without my input.
Is it supposed to?
Saying that zoomed pictures in lowlight is a processing nightmare, they come out looking like drawings

I found out that using the periscope camera at night or in low-light environments, for example, with 50x zoom, the Automatic Mode produces better overall quality photos than with Night Mode or HDR Mode. Maybe the Automatic Mode makes a better use/control of the periscope sensor OIS.
PS: loving the Aperture Mode - it produces DSLR-style photos with a short depth of field

Not really because if you can shoot with periscope camera in manual mode, increasing the shutter speed you can reach result that cannot reach with prime sensor
Actually distance between the subject and phone also matters. If the camera is not able to focus at a subject properly it will shift to regular lens. The focal length of telephoto lens is different and requires some distance to trigger. Also if you want to force the telephoto lens to shoot then use Pro Mode.
In my opinion distance plays a more important role in switching to telephoto lens.

Looks like you need to enable RAW in Pro Mode to force the Telephoto sensor on zoom, otherwise it still defaults to the 40mp sensor if the subject is too close / it thinks it will get a better result
You can see if it has changed to telephoto by opening settings once it has zoomed, the max rez displayed of the sensor, also it will not allow digital zoom
