Using dual sim n9600 in USA - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

I am thinking of getting n9600 for use on t-mobile and at&t
Will losing B71 band mean too much of a hassle, or I won't even feel it?
Any ideas?
Anybody here using that. I am gravitating towards that due to dual sim

I'm using n9600 in bay area with simple mobile (tmobile network) and get calls, sms/mms and lte data out of the box.
I didn't have to but i flashed detonator anyway for the wifi calling, Volte and video calling. I don't ever use those but it's nice to know it's there.

Seeing as the N9600 is a Snapdragon device, you should be able to use it in the states without any issues.

The problem is
1. No CDMA
2. Some bands like B71 missing. Am wondering if it won't be too much of a hassle

Misleading and oversimplified statement...there's more to it than simply Snapdragon or Exynos.

I just got one (n9600) for Metro by TMobile. Would love video calling, volte, Samsung pay. Any ideas?

It's going to depend on where you are whether the missing bands are going to be a hassle or not. I live in an almost purely Band71 area so it would be almost useless to me at home, however I travel to areas where it's band 4 so it wouldn't be an issue there. So the question is, where do you plan to use it the most?

Unlocked Bands and the Snapdragon 835

So I was thinking about current carriers and of course mvno's. (Currently on at t USA)
Theoretically the unlocked version of Snapdragon 835 has a lot of different bands it can use. Works fine on at t for me.
I am curious though, would some mnvo like net10 (access to multiple carriers) be able to uniquely take advantage of all the available lte bands that it can use )ex at t and TMobile depending on which has better speed or even use both?
Or does it not work that way. Does anyone have more knowledge then I do here?
Does anyone have experience with mvno's and how they work. I always shied away from them assuming they get secondary bandwidth compared to primary at t Verizon etc users.
I don't know what you mean. All OnePlus 5's are unlocked, They only difference is international or a Chinese variant. This means none are carrier locked but they only have GSM radios so they only work on AT&T or T-Mobile with LTE data. So whatever MVNO you use, has to be a T-Mobile or AT&T MVNO. The Bands are all unlocked it's just what band the carrier uses will it take advantage of from the MVNO.

that is partly incorrect there was some videos of a few well known reviewers in the android community that tested the oneplus 5 on verizon and it works .....including data.
No not incorrect at all. I said they only work on AT&T T-Mobile with LTE data. The Verizon thing you're talking about is 3G and less. What I said, it's 100% correct

On that note, there is only a single global version of the OnePlus 5. No Chinese only version.
Supporting the comments about Verizon though; it does work, but like you said, not well with data. Though the phone does support a single CDMA band. More useful for emergency calls than actually putting a SIM in it.

Same hardware though. So yes, again, technically correct that there is a version with a different OS but not correct that they have different support for bands. Which is what we're talking about.
Which is probably what you meant, just wasn't very clear.
So only some MVNO's have speeds limited by the big carriers. Others are treated identically. My wife is on cricket (ATT network, $35/month), her data speeds are capped at 10 Mbps (which is fine for her). I'm on straight talk (ATT network, $45/month) and my data speeds are identical to regular ATT customers (and I've confirmed by doing speedtest.net tests with a friend's phone side by side).
T-Mobile and Sprint coverage stink near me, and Verizon really limits what phones you can get, so I've stuck with ATT MVNO's over the years (been on straight talk since 2012). For heavy data users, straight talk has an 8gb data, unlimited talk/text for $45/month. If you don't need 8gb and you don't stream video/tether, you'd be better off on cricket, which is $35/month for 3gb+unlimited talk/text. Cricket also has dope family plans (5 lines for $100).
Be warned, straight talk customer service is awful. The only time you ever really need to call them is if you want to port your number over or if you forget to pay your bill (or your auto pay card expires or something). They can do simple stuff, but it's often like talking to a brick wall. Cricket customer service is MUCH better and if you don't need the extra speed, cricket is the way to go.
I have no affiliation with either cricket or straight talk, they've never paid me a dime to say anything nice about them, I'm just a very happy customer.
Sorry for the wall of text. Hope this helps some of you make the leap!

Exynos Galaxy Note 8 on AT&T

This time around, I will most likely be getting the Exynos version of the Galaxy Note 8. There are 2 versions that I am looking at specifically:
SM-N950F
SM-N950N
I've seen a few threads on here where people are trying to get them to work with AT&T, but never asked outright, so I am making this thread in hopes that it could possibly serve as a reference point for everyone:
Has anyone gotten the Exynos, international version of the Galaxy Note 8 working with AT&T, and get full LTE, VoLTE, Wifi calling, etc.?
If so, which Exynos model is it, and how did you get AT&T working?
Thank you so much!
I was using a UK Exynos S8+ on AT&T. You'll get none of AT&T's advanced features. Also, and I didn't realize it until I got the unlocked Note8, LTE speeds are slower with the Exynos radio. If you use Samsung Pay be careful which CSC you buy. Not all of them support U.S. use of Samsung Pay.

How much slower are the LTE speeds we are talking? I can understand if it's slightly slower, but if it's much slower, then no-go.
Honestly, I use AT&T Prepaid, and it already doesn't have things by default such as VoLTE and Wifi calling (I think), so as long as I get stable and relatively fast LTE, it won't matter much.
I just purchased a SM-N950N 256gb I plan on using it on ATT I really do hope LTE works on it as I returned my note 8 snapdragon to get the exynos variant.

That's good; if you could please update this thread with your direct experiences, I could then update the OP if it will work definitively or not. I already read in another thread that it works perfectly with T-mobile, so I can't see why not with AT&T.
UK N950F (XEU Single Sim) on ATT and it's working fine for me... LTE works, VoLTE works and HD Voice works (although i'm not sure if i can initiate a HD call. when i see the HD icon, i assume it's someone calling me via Wifi calling). i'm in some fringe areas, but i still get avg DL speeds of 35-40 mb/s. upload is consistently in the 20 mb/s range which is fine for my needs. @BarryH_GEG, what are your average speeds with the ATT Note 8? thanks.

Just saw this thread.
If you can can you point me to the csc file you flashed and if you can how did you flash?
I've tried a few that are out there and they all caused simple things like call forwarding not to work.
TIA.

Only other LTE phone I have is the Note 5 which is also not an At&t branded phone, which I assume is what is needed to turn on all the other features.

sm-n960f/ds on at&t

ive been looking everywhere and im not 100% on this BUT will this model work on at&t? lte and everything? might trtade my unlocked note 9 for one
It will work on at&t but you might miss out on some network features like carrier aggregation which gives you faster download speeds. But other than that it would work fine on at&t.

Works fine. You're not going to have wifi calling, and there's a band or two we're don't have on the phone they ATT uses.
I have been using a 960f/ds on AT&T for a week or two now.

It will work but you will miss lots of AT&T Features and a few bands are missing, Also no wifi calling thats one of the features there's more features that wont work can't remember now, So if you care about your AT&T Features then it's really not worth getting theses International Phones, Also the Network is Slower Than the one Snapdragon AT&T Has on there phone, Cause of the Bands Missing.
I on att on 960F/DS. Works fine. Speed is the same where I am compared to my att note 8 but that could be because if where I am. If I'm missing a couple of options it's worth it for the flexibility. No issues.

Is Note 9 model SM-N960F/DS (Dual Sim) compatible with T-Mobile?

Is Note 9 model SM-N960F/DS (Dual Sim) fully compatible with T-Mobile?
Is there anything I need to know about this compatibility?
The N960F lacks support for LTE band 71 which T-Mobile US has been rolling out recently. It cannot properly aggregate US LTE bands so data speeds will be limited to the capacity of a single band. Out of the box the phone also cannot use T-Mobile's advanced services like VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling. Developer TEKHD has created a package called Detonator (link below) that installs the TMB CSC and makes other software tweaks to enable all the advanced services, essentially transforming the phone into an N960U variant, but you must be rooted to install the package. Rooting a Samsung phone permanently trips a hardware fuse which disables Samsung Pay and may prevent you from obtaining warranty service.

When stated that the TEKHD Detonator enables all the advanced services, does that include LTE Aggregation? Also, the link loads a non-existent site - is there another way to acquire TEKHD Detonator? Thanks for your time.

Has anyone done this? I very much would like to know. Currently with US variant phone, which I could turn back in for one of these if I only knew I could actually root it and still have T-Mobile's aggregation, etc.
I can actually answer this one with some real world experience. I bought my N960F in Germany, the dual sim Exynos model unlocked. I used it with Deutsche Telekom which is owned by T-Mobile and it worked just fine in Germany. When I returned to the U.S., I brought my phone back with me and started up a plan with T-Mobile because the Deutsche Telekom people advised me that it should work just fine. Lo and behold, it worked just fine except for WiFi calling at first. Weirdly, WiFi calling did eventually start working properly after a week or 2 which was great because my house is in a pretty bad cell coverage area. All I can remember doing to get it to work is keep messing with the settings and eventually it started working one day. My speeds are great on LTE, streaming HD Youtube and whatnot while I'm out so I can't say there is any issue with the LTE bands that I'm aware of.
It's worth noting that I rooted my phone and then unrooted it while I was in Germany, but I never changed to a custom ROM or anything so that probably didn't have any effect on the network compatibility. One issue I'm having now is that the phone does NOT work with Verizon, I just found that out yesterday. I'm sure someone knows the technical reasons for this but just know that you might be stuck with T-Mobile if you want to keep using the N960F in the U.S. But it does work! I can use hotspot, WiFi calling, and VoLTE as well.
Is the lack of band 71 a software or hardware difference? I thought it would be a hardware difference, as the 600 MHz frequency requires a longer antenna than higher frequencies. Or is it that all Note 9 have same hardware, where the differences are in disabling certain features?

[Q] Is this normal ? 4G to 3G to H+ when calling?

I have a unlocked s10+ with a ATT sim card, when I try to make a call, the HTE network symbol changes to a lower speed and eventually H (edge), however the call does go through?
Just curious if anyone else was seeing this ?
Thanks in advance!
Its normal if you have VoLTE disabled or if it isn't available. You can check in settings > connections > mobile networks and check if you have VoLTE enabled.
Don't see it under those options, thanks for the reply !

Ask your provider to re-provision VoLTE setting to your SIM. Also sometimes you may have to wait for an update for he settings to get applied. Happened to me on my S7. Carrier had activated VoLTE but phone s/w didn't support it. After an update, everything worked.
data is limited to H or 3G (if you are lucky) during calls
thats normal as the phone is using bandwidth for voice calls and cannot offer same data speeds
4G is all about data transfers so you would never really make a call over 4G it will always be over H
ATT doesn't allow VoLTE on the unlocked version. You will need to flash the carrier rom to enable it.
Appreciate everyone's feedback, I spoke to my carrier, and they (Level 2 Tech.) claimed that they (ATT) and Samsung were working on a device performance update, but were not sure of the release time, I will see if they can address this issue, else will need to reflash with carrier rom

I have LTE during voice calls. Your phone/carrier may not give you this option, but others have it.
At&T doesn't fully support unlocked phone learned that the hard way when i bought my 1st unlock note 8. Internet was slow same signal your getting H+ no wifi calling it was a mess returned it and bought an At&t note.

Future custom roms, root. The exynos version isn't missing any LTE bands that I know of. I get great coverage and speed. I don't know how they are inferior to SD. Performance and battery life are good.
Unlocked U1 devices will not get VoLTE or VoWifi with AT&T. Some have had luck flashing the AT&T firmware and CSC on prior generations, but there wasn't a guaranteed way to make this work.
If you need these features, youre best off buying the AT&T branded version, or buying an international phone that enables VoLTE without requiring carrier validation. (Which will likely work)

If your provider supports VoLTE, then you can as voice is transmitted as VOIP call via LTE network. You should see VoLTE icon next to 4G icon if your provider supports it and is provisioned to your SIM card.
