I have been using my N6 for the past couple of days and the battery life has been quite disappointing for me so far. It seems the biggest culprit for me is the poor signal in my area leading to a huge amount of drain from Cell Standby. Even when idle, my battery drains quickly. I lose 1% every few minutes without even turning my screen on and about 10% over an hour. As of now, my device has been on for 2h 49m and 24% of that time has been without signal.
I understand that poor reception is causing the radio to constantly look for a signal but my Moto G and Nexus 5 are in the exact same environment and fair much better when it comes to battery life. Anyone else experiencing this insane battery drain? At this point I'm debating sending the device back, getting a refund, and dealing with the bloated and Touchwiz filled Note 4. It's a bummer because I absolutely love this phone otherwise. The screen, build quality, WiFi signal strength, and audio experience make this phone an absolute delight but the battery drain might be a deal breaker for me. Thankfully I still have a couple of weeks to make up my mind on whether or not I'll be keeping the phone or returning it and going for another phablet. Thanks to the N6, I can no longer return to a phone with small display.
As I mentioned earlier, I am not having this issue with my Moto G or Nexus 5 and both devices have excellent idle battery life.

I have noticed the same thing with my device. Might not be to the extent you are experiencing because the cell coverage is a little better but cell standby is one of the main causes of my battery draining.

This seems to be an issue with Lollipop and people with the Nexus 5 are also experiencing this. There is a thread over at /r/android discussing this issue.
I absolutely love this phone and I will be holding out for a patch as long as I can. This phone is so awesome though.
I don't have this issue with my new N6 or my N5 on lollipop. I have very strong signal though in my area.
I would like to point out though it's not that bad considering your without service for over 20% of the time at that point.. From that it looks like you'll have a12 hour day.

Yes, my N5 running LRX21O has the same since I activated my N6. In my case (Wi-Fi only) I can just turn off the mobile radios.
I actually already started a thread about this. At first I thought it was a sprint issue turns out to be widespread.

Thanks for letting me know about your own thread discussing the same issues, I have posted there as well. :good:
This cell standby drain reminds me of eclair and froyo days. I believe the temp solution for this was to briefly put it into airplane mode. Then turn mobile network bank on. It would sort of reset the existing bug. Anyone remember this from way back when?

I remember it well I had the Eris. But I think it's different today. I think it's a reporting issue not a signal loss issue. Imo
Ahh... memories, I had the eris as well. Actually 5 of them, ha ha. Man android has come along way.

Just a thought.. try changing it from LTE preferred to 3G. I'm not saying to use this as a permanent solution but just try it out. I was in the -90 to -103dB range in signal on LTE and it would randomly crap out entirely for a few seconds every couple minutes (at best). I have no idea why - didn't have that issue on my older galaxy S3. Anyway, switching to 3G suddenly gave me fantastic reception (at least in terms of signal strength).
If it helps you - that might be the cause of your battery drain: poor signal.
Me too I've switched to 3g and I'm my nexus isn't constantly looking for a 4g signal

I just did 12 hours in a hospital where my S3 couldn't make it much past lunchtime. I'm at around 15 hours now and have 70% left. Full time on 4G.

Did this too which helped a ton.
Also flashing the latest modem in fastboot also appeared to help.

Like others have mentioned, forcing it to a specific network mode will typically save power, especially when you kill something as power hungry as LTE.
From the regular system menu, you only have the options to set "preferred" LTE/3G/2G, but this does not actually disable LTE or 2G when you select 3G.
From the dialer, enter *#*#4636#*#*, select phone information, scroll down to "set preferred network type" and choose "WCDMA only". With this, it will actually turn off the LTE and GSM radios.
Do you think some note 5 devices have faulty batteries?
I had note 5 32 gb and the battery never drained and was getting 4 hours And 15 min MINIMUM SCREEN ON TIME
And FANTASTIC Idle battery i used to lose 1 percent every 2 hours. The phone used to Survive A whole day since day one.
I then sold it and bought Note 5 64 gb.
This phone DOES NOT DOZE it ALWAYS Drains battery even with screen off and barley reaches 3 hours of Screen on time.
What do you think the problem?
Bad firmware from diffrent phones or diffrent batteries?
I am going to try not to use fast charging
and use a different charger (both phones used different type of socket , perhaps the socket I used with the new one some how drains the battery much more).
No diffrence. It must be something to do with the firmware but i do not want to root it.
is knox tripped? if it is, then it has the wakelock bug

No but i am thinking of rooting it the battery in my new model is just half my first model.
I am really thinking of installing custom rom because the drain is unbearable.. its so confusing my old one used to last an entire day with 4 hours SOT

Perhaps ypur new Note 5 has a faulty battery?
Also which region /model is your new Note 5 and is it the same region/model as the 32GB one was?
how strong is the mobile network signal?
I had a T Mobile US Note 4 in UK and it did not get a good signal (especially indoors) as a UK Note 4 model and this caused massive battery drain for me so i sent it back and bought a Note5 Duos instead
which ROM are you running, run BBS or GSAM on it for a few days and see what's causing drain?

Maybe its just diffrent regions i do not know
I went to diffrent country.. bought 64 byte modrl.
I remember my sim card used to restart my device before i cleaned it. Could that be the reason?

Hey, just telling. I went to Samsung store and bought an s6e+ which is almost same device with note 5. I personally unboxed it(unsealed with my hands). I mean it was brand new, not a second hand knox tripped. Then at the first night turned the screen off(no sim inside it, no wifi) %23 battery went away, in the morning it was dead. Figured out that the brand new Shamesung device that i've bought came with deep sleep issue. So rooted it after 3 days and deep sleep survived. I felt like im in a treating center who tells his story lol. Good luck.

There a alot of issue with deep sleeping for somereason. I sometimes experi3nce it on stock note 5 but its gone away. How are the custom nougat roms? Im planning to root my phone soon, maybe after the note 5 updates to officaly nougat by samsung so that roms can be more stable.
I've just moved from the iPhone 8 plus to the p20 Pro Jesus I am blown away it was a hard decision as I've been a loyal apple fan since the 3g
The pro is quick , no sluggish and now they have fixed the routing issue my banking apps work also
I got a dual SIM off three UK and have my work SIM and my personal SIM in the phone
Does having dual SIM drain the battery quicker ? As I've got two network running at the same time
I love the camera and the screen and phone so think my days are gone with the apple world
Thanks in advance

Hi,
To answer your question. No it should not take up much more or noticeable battery drain during normal use throughout the working day.
The reason to this is that when you use both of the sims you would have manually selected which sim is used for data connectivity which means that the other sim won't connect to its' network for data.
However, yes both sims will be receiving a network signal to maintain normal operation, but won't also be sending or downloading data until you have either manually selected it to do so or if you have received or are receiving a call.
If you have enabled dual data then it may. But that wouldn't be ideal for everyday functionality per se
Hope this helps
Can't say whether the dual sim drains battery quicker however I guess that it would as compared to a single sim phone. Nevertheless, the battery efficiency of this phone is crazy, even with HEAVY use you won't be able to drain the battery in one day; I always go to bed with min 30ish percent left. As we speak I have 35% left and I used the phone too much (mind you, its 01:06am [emoji16])
My girlfriend has the 8 plus and I always have way more battery left than she does at the end of the day.
That aside, even if it drained quicker, the benefit of me not holding/charging two phones every single day, makes the p20 pro a winner.
Tip.. If you use apps like vibe, WhatsApp etc in each sim, the phone has this twin app option for apps which are registered to phone numbers.

Dual SIM doesn't take up anything noticeable compared to single SIM, the difference is neither here nor there.
I've been having horrible battery life on Pie. I started on a clean slate then restored through smart switch. I'm getting max 5 hours of SOT on pie whereas I always got 8+ hours on oreo. I don't know if it's just me or anyone else is experiencing the same. Please share your battery stats so we can average out the outcome. If this continues, I'm definitely odining back to oreo.
Thanks

Nope, I am At&t went back to Oreo. Wasn't getting anywhere close to the 8 to 10hr screen times as a see some have. Best I could get was about 5hrs..granted I would have about 6hrs call time which is ok I guess, but still Oreo was better for me. But then again I never let my battery drop below 20% and I usually only charge to 90%..I never let it get down to the single digits.

I'm on T-Mo and have great battery life. 8-10 hours SOT. Mix of WiFi and LTE.
Actuakky I'd say an estimated 8-10 hours. I use the phone pretty heavy throughout the day. I'm on it for a couple hours after I wake up. Posting on here, reading my Bible app, checking the news, etc.
Then I go to the gym and stream music through Bluetooth for a couple hours. I usually check my phone occasionally and take calls while there.
Then I randomly get on it throughout the day and evening at home.
I average 1 hour of screen time per 10% of battery, but I haven't been able to kill the battery before bed to see the full 10 hours of SOT. And I charge over night. Though I have left it off the charger by accident and still woke up with a plenty of juice.
This phone is a beast that sips battery. And my Note 8 is doing just as well on Pie.
I'm not saying I don't believe you, I'm just saying something must be going on with your particular phone.

I'm getting 7hrs 40mins average SOT
Exynos the battery is quite good.
Dual sim always, location high + wifi scan when wifi off, max resolution on (WQHD+), no AOD
On 4G i get around 5 hours SOT and on WIFI around 6 SOT
Those that are getting 8hours+ probably sometimes they are using the phone in airplane mode with WIFI enabled or not at all and a lot other things that they do not mention so please do not take them as "normal" people because it's not fair what they are presenting and does not reflect a normal day to day user.
As some noted, depending on the usage - the battery life on pie is worse vs oreo. For me it's also worse as I multitask a lot. The SOC CPU control is tuned differently for more performance. Sadly, it's leading to worse battery life while still lags massively behind the snapdragon 845 in performance. Luckily - it's a little bit faster. This is the reason why most likely those reports about lower battery life on pie will come from mainly exynos note 9 owners.
For me and my usage, it's not massively lower, but surely it's noticeable lower usage before need for recharge vs oreo. It's still ok. I am not so ok with the gutted multiwindow functionality and the rushed/bugged state (and that's funny given how many months the PIE update was in development + the beta).
I also saw some recent tests of those with exynos and update Pie with Antutu around 260000 compared to the test made on Oreo around 244000. It sees the CPU and GPU increase and a consistent decrease to UX and MEM.

Actually depends on the apps you're using, on wifi I got very high battery without airplane mode, which can make me go to 10 hrs of screen on
Also, what ROM are you running and did sot significantly decrease since you bought and later unlocked and flashed it?
I'm running Havoc with two 4G+ sims running, no access to wifi and quite a lot of tethering in the background, two Bluetooth devices (earphones and Miband) and I get 4h SOT (according to battery manager, I feel it may be less though). I got the phone in September last year and unlocked it back in May and I feel it decreased really bad, like I had 7h+ running stock

Running stock firmware with pristine bootloader.... I usually get close to 6 hours of sot and around 14-15 hours between successive chargers.
Always on dual sim with dual volte + tethering atleast for 3 hours..
