What is the deal with the weather plugin?
each time i click on it is says "attempting to download data" i have the weather options setting "download weather data automatically" checked but it does not appear to be updating automatically. Does anyone know of a reg setting that you can use to change the frequency of this download?

Sorry to hijack this thread but......
Where did you find the download weather data automatically setting? I went thru the whole machine and still couldn't find it! And obviously, it doesn't auto update........

When you click on the city name to select another city, there will be an settings option under the rigth softkey when you have the list of cities in front of you

That's what the "download weather data automatically" setting will do...it will attempt to get an internet connection and update the weather when (and IF) you click on the Weather Plugin. The thing is, it will want to do this every hour from the previous weather update.

And what about disconnect? Is it possible to auto-disconnect after the weather foreground is downloaded?
It's very annoying if you don't have a data plan or if you want to save battery to have to do a manual disconnect.

I guess I was looking for more finite control over this. Ideally I don’t want to see “attempting to download data” when I click the plug-in. I would rather it just download automatically in the background instead of the plug-in having to check the web at the moment I hit the icon.
Maybe I need to hack the reg to leave GPRS always on?

By design the data connection remains connected for most Windows Mobile 6 devices, it doesn't mean data is being passed or power consumption is increased.

Interesting
Also, Mobile Operators requested it. It was more expensive for them to be constantly creating and tearing down connections than to just do it once. Finally, staying connected enabled us to develop a fast "push email" client that relied on the device holding an IP address.

What about my battery life?
Just having a data connection shouldn't affect your battery life. Most of the time, the device isn't doing anything with that connection. It just sits there idle. If you're sending a lot of data over the connection, though, that will definitely impact your battery life. Unfortunately, the arrows don't really tell you whether you're sending data or not (though I've seen devices that animate the arrows while data is being transferred).

In GSM, when you are constantly attached to GPRS, your battery does not spend more energy because there is absolutely no communication between the network and device if there is no data transfer (however there is still periodical normal GSM communication). Only difference is if you are in motion and changing cells in time. Network keeps track of your GPRS connection via "routing area" which consists of one or group of cells. When you switch to cell that belongs to adjacent routing area, there is a, very short, "routing area update" exchange of information between phone and network, regarding GPRS only. But that is very small power consumption.
The same thing is with UMTS. The whole goal of any network is to bring communication traffic to minimum. But, with UMTS, channel coding and transmitting technique is much more complex than with GSM. You are attached to multiple cells at the same time and there is very, very, very strict phone transmit power control. That means that phone must do a lot more signal measurements from group of cells (much more frequent than GSM). It could possibly happen, if you reserved more channels for packet data transfer, that a lot of signalling happens. However, there is a inactivity timeout here which puts you in standby mode as in GSM and then you do not spend battery for packet data at all. But this is all complicated, it depend of many factors: signal strength, network settings, number of users in your location area, etc. .. If the network signal is weak, than any phone in any type of network will eat up your battery.

I'm going to try this theory out for a couple of days
if you were to read the manual that came with the phone it states that this is exactly how the weather tab works. If auto update is enabled it will automatically update the forecast every time you touch the weather tab.
Honestly it seems a little silly to me. I have auto update turned off and just tape the last updated time at the top to manually update it.

Back to your point. I am looking for the same thing you are. my data connection is always on because i am using push email but i still see the attempting to download after a certain period of time.

We are on the same page flexte, but it would appear that as of yet no one has figured out just exactly how to tweak the plugin to do what we want. As Jason Lee mentioned it is working like the Manual says it should. Hopefully this will eventually get tweaked!
has anyone figured how to get rid of the "attempting to downlad data" message yet?
Is it possible for an App to interfere with the WiFi connection? I've downloaded plenty of third party, torrented apps and I've been noticing that my WiFi will work for a few pages and then stop loading, throwing up an error saying "Web page not available" showing the little Android. This would cause me to disable WiFi and go strictly with 3G. Enabling WiFi later would help with a few more pages until it wanted to die again.
After I uninstalled ALL of my apps and unrooted the phone, I've noticed that the WiFi works again (so far at least). I still have the same 1 bar signal from across the house, but it isn't giving any more errors.
I constantly used task killer to free up memory, so I don't think those apps would have made a difference in the sense that they may have been taking up some bandwidth or the such.
Any clues guys? Thanks for any help.

I have the same problem. I rooted and did the settings.db. My wifi will turn on and connect but 20-30 seconds later it just turns off on its own. I haven't unrooted it to see if it fixes it though.

That and using Task Killer in the first place. Not needed, causes more problems than it solves (and it solves almost nothing on Galaxy S).
I am in the same boat--just started noticing it today when I got home from work and turned the phone back on only to see I wasn't connected to wifi. When I connected to my network again I noticed the 3G icon stayed on the screen with the wifi connection symbol, where the wifi icon used to replace the 3g icon. After a little while, it was gone.
I have rooted and removed some of the AT&T apps but nothing else. I havent sideloaded any apps either. It usually take me a couple of tries to connect to my router (WRT54GL). Sometimes it also seems that my phone turns off wifi by itself.
I hope this isn't a symptom of the battery cover antenna. Does your WiFi signal show as weak in the strength readout?

By default the wi-fi setting is set to go to sleep (and use cellular data instead) when the screen is off, which will most likely happen while you are streaming music as well as other things. To change it so the wi-fi never turns off, go into the phone's menu -> wireless and network -> wi-fi settings -> tap the menu button and select advanced which has an option for wi-fi sleep policy that had been defaulted to sleep "when screen turns off". There you have the option to change it to "never" or "never when plugged in".
Did a little more playing around with it, finally had to reset my router to maintain any type of consistent connection after restarting the phone. One weird thing is that my old iPhone wasn't able to connect to the router consistently last night until the reset either--it has never had any issues in the past.
After the reset, the captivate did maintain a consistent connection--I browsed a few websites and streamed part of a show from my computer using Allshare.
This morning when I turned on the phone wifi wasn't connected so I went into the settings and looks like the phone had attempted to connect unsuccessfully. I clicked it again to connect and it connected without any issue and was fine until I left for work. The whole thing seems a little wonky, as well as it should automatically try to re-connect if it fails the first time if network is in range, or at least give you an alert.
I just set up tdogz suggestion above, so we will see if it helps.

Before I unrooted the WiFi wouldn't work with full or low bars, not sure of the strength readout.

Running into the same issue, I am positive it is a software issue. It only seemed to happen after I flashed my phone with the Odin One click downloader. Dunno if it is coincidence or not. Going to try clearing the user data from the recovery window to see if it helps. I also notices on the power widget, i cant control GPS from there, blue tooth as well i think.

Huzza! I figured my issue out, may be yours as well. Did you do the sideload hack with the settings.db? Turns out you need to change the owner of settings.db to system:

After that, I was good to go. The logic behind this is that settings.db tracks more settings than just if you can sideload apps or not. I'm betting the system is trying to change a value in that file and it cant after the hack, so various systems fail.
I have been a proud owner of Xperia Z for over a month now. I switched from iPhone 4s to XZ and the experience has been splendid! During this time, I have noticed these problems-
1. When call ends, the dialer makes a very loud beep sound. I love the dialer but this beep sound is a major irritation esp. if call ends before I can pull phone away from my ears which happens more often than I can stand such a loud deep!
2. For unknown reason my XZ keeps losing Data connectivity in between. I have seen this happen when Wifi is on, which I thought could be due to "wifi policy" but when I am outside with no wifi, I keep losing the Data. The network connection is good. It's just the data. Only way to get it back is - turn on airplane mode - lock phone - unlock phone - turn off air plane mode.
I have researched XDA forums but no resolution on above problems yet. Please share your findings. :fingers-crossed:
No responses I looked at threads for network data connection issues but none have reported problem like mine. The tones when phone connects and disconnects a call are the most difficult to work with :silly:

Beep is normal...... No ned to wry........ In your network connection. Please select gsm preferred if u dont use 3g.... U will be fine...
I wish to get rid of the beep because it's very loud.

Bro, it looks difficult to get rid of that beep unless u get root access but it's not a prob.. It's just an indication when call is disconnected..

Try using the dual mode with cdma preferred option, trust me nothing wrong with the device just change ur network operator.....
Do you know what steps I can take to remove loud beep sound if I get rooted? I had tried but no luck.

This same SIM and network stayed connected on my iPhone 4s. I never had this problem with iPhone 4s. On the other hand, the first time I take my XZ on ride while using GPS and it losses connection right in middle transit which is in main city. The constant dropping of 3g connection makes it completely unreliable.

always on wifi is a feature of 4.3 for data saving.go to wifi in setting and press menu key and in advanced seting turn it off
Same here. Already tried deactivating all the options in the advance setting. Will monitor if it will still persist.
Maybe you have installed "Battery Guru" / "DU Battery Saver". I don't remember which one of them was turning on my wifi (I'm almost sure it was "Battery Guru", though). So if this is your case, look for those apps settings and turn on the option that allows them to turn on wifi.

Have you use the Batery Guru App?
Check the options for Google location services, there's a wifi option.

It could be an app that you have installed that you have given permission to activate WiFi with out noticing?
All types of apps ask for this kind of permission, not just power management apps.
Do you have bad signal in your house? Maybe it's reverting to mobile data due to bad signal? Mine does it in some parts of my house.

I'm suspicious it might be Aviate Launcher. Uninstalled and hasn't happened since but I'll keep watching to see if it happens again

This is the settings you want in BatteryGuru to stop the wifi turning on and off randomly.
Hey Guys , I found a solution to this problem .
Go to settings> WiFi> advanced . Then untick "Scanning always available" . This would solve the problem .
I would like to point out that Sony support team was replying useless software repair emails as solution to this . Kindly understand problem and reply accordingly .
there are some apps that can turn your wifi, like viber. for viber go to settings, general and there you should the wifi setting

currently, I don't have an unlimited data plan, but switch on mobile internet on demand, for a single day. Most of the time I'm using wifi.
Now, I own my Z3C only for two weeks. Some days ago, I was travelling and thus configured and switched on mobile internet for the first time with this phone, for a single day. I am pretty sure I switched mobile internet off in the evening.
But looking into my provider's online overview today, I noticed that since then, my phone used mobile internet from time to time (about every five hours or so). The amount of data seems to be low (<1kB), but anyway, up to today that triggered four additional days of mobile internet usage without me needing that and even without me knowing that.
Can anybody explain what's going on there - and especially how to switch that behavior off?
The phone is stock, unchanged, and unrooted (all updates installed). No MMS have been sent or received. The data usage in settings does not give any helpful information.

I also have stock rom, hardly any additional apps, turned off automatic updates etc. But it still connects to internet, behind my back for A SECOND, sometimes in every ten minutes, sometimes once a day. A temp solution is to delete the APN settings, but this does not solve the problem.
SO CAN ANYONE HELP US?
I have a guess. It's either Anonymous data sending or phone usage. These two .apks send anonymous data to Sony, probably even using mobile data. It's a guess tough.
Nevertheless, I have removed them since I'm rooted.

You can try Onavo, but I believe those services will be masked under OS/Android, so it's hard to pinpoint them.
Also you van try the default app in > Settings, Data Usage (Mobile Data only)

In the meantime, I found a cure: Changing Settings -> Location -> Mode from "High accuracy" to "Battery Saving" immediately stopped the network access.
According to some other forum, assisted GPS is the reason, so using either "High accuracy" or "Device only" will both cause GPS to ask the mobile network for AGPS data from time to time. It is yet unclear to me why this also happens when I have an active WLAN connection.
With that knowledge, removing ",supl" from the APN type (and saving the APN afterwards!) could also disable fetching of AGPS data from the mobile network while mobile internet is switched off, but I didn't test that yet.

As far as I understood things, that will not help, because "device-only" still activates GPS and thus still uses AGPS.
Did you try it already? What are your findings?

I just checked, it made no changes (device only). Today from 00.00 to (strangely) 11.00 clock, is the internet on/off count 53 times. I can see that the connections were 0 sec and 1 kB. So what now?

So i switched GPS off all together, and it seems to be working, no internet connection has been made. I also noticed that for a while the device changed the settings from device only to high accuracy itself. I deleted the ",supl" lets see what happens.
Actually the phone stopped surfing on its own before i deleted "supl" and i think the problem was google and its location history. Im going to test furder. Did you get it under control?
So, over a month has passed and i have some good and bad news. The good news is, that the problem for me has stopped(12.02), the bad news is, i don't know why. I made many changes and now i don't know what affected it. But my guess is that it was the deleting of "supl". Because in one month i had all the settings(location, battery saver etc) on and off and it didn't affect the data usage. 16.03 i got lollipop on my device and this also didn't change it back.
