I have been flashing roms for years on Samsung Devices and every time I had an issue in the past, I was able to fix it - somehow - some way - until now - I believe I have finally - really bricked my phone but in a last ditch desperate effort am hoping someone can help.
Here is the issue:
I was using the most recent Odin to flash the most recent firmware for N960F - the odin flash failed halfway thru - don't know why - it just failed. No error message - but in the top of the column where it usually says PASS when you finish flashing - it said fail.
The phone screen was a blue screen that said the update to my phone has failed - use Smart Switch emergency recovery.
I connected my PC to the phone via USB and when I started Smart Switch - it says my device is not supported. I tried to reboot the phone - tried to turn it off - tried to put it in download mode - and each time it simply goes back to the screen saying that I needed to use Smart Switch Emergency Recovery. Which doesn't work, each time I attempt to use it. Device Not Supported.
I tried to power off the phone and it won't power off. Held power button and volume downfor over 1 minute and nothing happens. (Same thing with power and volume up - power, bixby and volume down) I also tried getting into download mode by holding Volume Down and Bixby and then plugged phone into USB and PC (with Odin open on my PC) and nothing happens.
I have trued everything I can think of - hoping there is something someone can suggest that might work to help me do an emergency recovery or flash stock back onto my phone? Or am I holding an ineffective boat anchor ?
Thanks in advance for your assistance - hoping someone can help.

I actually ran into the same exact issue about a week ago, and was sure I bricked my phone. However, when it is stuck on that screen saying to use the emergency Smart Switch recovery, it is actually already in download mode.
After realizing that, I simply used Odin, saw that it detected the phone, and flashed back to my original N960U1 firmware which worked perfectly. I see that you mentioned you tried Odin, but was that when you were trying to go into download mode/rebooting? See if it shows it is connected when it's on the stuck blue screen.

Wow - sometimes the most simple solutions are the right ones. Thank you so much. I was so worried over bricking the device that I didn't realize it was still being recognized by Odin.
I reloaded ODIN and flashed the firmware and it worked. PHone is booting up now. NEver seen an issue like this before - but glad you had the experience to share to help me figure it out. Thanks so much for your help!

I had the same issue on S7 exynos trying to downgrade firmware. Flashing latest firmware via Odin solved it.

There have been those that run into problems after installing the XXJP3I9000 update on the Samsung Captivate and attempt to reboot into recovery mode. The issue that they have is that since the Captivate has no physical home button to select an option like you can with the Galaxy S, you can't select an option, and therefore you can't reboot your device regularly. While I am in this same problem and have not figured out a solution, I have started this thread to post what knowledge I have about this issue so that others may help get this issue figured out. If anyone has information on how to fix this problem, please comment below. Let's fix this!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First of all, the key combinations that standardly would work with the original captivate firmware will not work anymore. Pressing all three buttons (Vol+, Vol - and Power) will only power cycle the phone, that is, until you let up on the buttons. Pressing Vol+ and Vol- and then plugging your phone into the computer will also do nothing. (By nothing I mean will take you back to the recovery menu)
Every key combination will only take you back to the recovery menu, so key combinations seem to be out.
If you boot into recovery mode, take out the battery and put it back in, all the while keeping the phone plugged in to the computer, the phone will enter the "POWER RESET OR UNKNOWN UPLOAD MODE", which will show your device in windows as being a Samsung USB Composite Device and a Samsung Mobile Modem (gadget serial, Windows 7) While this may be helpful, you cannot run ODIN or ADB in this mode, nor does this allow disk access. If you have Samsung Kies installed, it will detect a device, but will never complete loading it.
Other information with this method: On the phone screen, as well as showing "POWER RESET OR UNKNOWN UPLOAD DEVICE" the screen will also show the following in red:
RST_STAT =0X1
PMIC_IRQ1 =0X0
PMIC_IRQ2 =0x0
PMIC_IRQ3 =0x4
PMIC_STATUS1 =0x40
PMIC_STATUS2 =0x2c
If this helps anybody, it was a pleasure
Another method I found briefly was that after installing Kies, and rebooting the phone into recovery mode (again) my computer detected four new devices, two of them being Samsung Android devices and one being a disk drive. Potentially, without freezing or error, the drivers that are included with the Kies software will detect and allow for disk management while the phone is in recovery mode. Three of the four devices installed without error for me, but the fourth, the actual Android device, continued to say "installing device" until I unplugged the phone out of frustration. It has since not detected those four devices again, and I have yet to figure out how to do that again. The nice thing about that was that although the adb.exe reboot download command did not work, adb.exe did detect the phone. if this is true then rebooting normally or into download mode should be easy.
The last thing I noticed is that button furthest to the left on the main screen on the captivate will close the recovery menu when pressed, and leave the background behind, and then will reopen the recovery menu when pressed again. This is showing me that the four touch buttons are operable, but not configured. If it were possible to reconfigure the actions that pressing these buttons do, then it would be easy to be able to reboot the device normally.
I have compiled information to the best of my ability, and here is a question to ask, that I think will help solve the problem. Can the captivate with I9000 2.2 software run adb in recovery mode?
Comments, Questions, and Most of all, answers would be appreciated for me, as well as for other users with the same problem as I. Hopefully, this thread can be the solving point for this problem.
Many Thanks,
TouchofDestiny
An Update: The reason that the combinations don't work for me or either people is because they (and I) fail to install the captivate kernel, and that is making the volume power button controls useless.
same here i put froyo from the galaxy s i9000 and i cant change the rom or get into recoverymode because buttons dont work man this sucks and 3G or Edge doesnt work.....
You're problem is a little different. If you can't get into recovery mode, than that means you aren't in recovery mode, which means you can use ADB to enter download mode and use Odin to flash your phone. I have given up looking for a solution, and have sent my phone back to AT&T for a replacement. Since I'm still in my thirty day trial period, it doesn't matter if I used different firmware or not. Hopefully others won't get into the situation I had. For me, this thread is complete.
hi,
I solved the same problem doing this:
start odin.
take out battery. plug in USB. press both volume buttons. insert battery while pressing those buttons.
Done. download mode should appear.
yep, same boat
I am in the same position here. I downloaded the froyo leak and installed it with odin, no problem there. Upon startup into froyo, all was good, except my phone was stuck in horizontal mode until I tilted it vertical, *then* it would go horizontal. So basically I am 90 degrees off kilter. I decided to look around for another rom to try, and in the process managed to get stuck in recovery mode. Couldn't tell ya what firmware I have, just what is on the endless recovery screen that I cannot get out of!
I have no external microSD card, only the SIM card, and no way to get it recognized on my XP or win 7 system.
Really, really stuck here, guys. I do have the androidsdk installed, if there is a way to get it to reboot. As it is, adb cannot see the device, so I am looking at a truly bricked phone.
And yes, this is a US phone, which is why the power button and home button are not mapped (I assume).
I am DESPERATE for some help here!
and while I am at it...
I WAS able to get into download mode with the shovel guy originally by using the 2 volume keys+power, usb (odin up), battery in, release power.
No more. No key combo works.
Totally bricked the Samsung, which is supposed to be impossible!
when you are on the i9000 rom the only button that will get you in download mode is the vol down
That's HUGE!
You, sir, are a gentleman, scholar, and all-round smart guy! How did I miss that? I coulda SWORN I was getting into download mode with both volume keys. I've never been so happy to see a little Dalek dude with a shovel in my LIFE. 2 minutes in the one-click installer and now I'm back in business!
Thanks for helping a terrified owner out, and preventing a trip to the AT&T store.
I cannot go to download mode
I have the same problem here. Stuck in the recovery mode after upgrade the froyo and had the orientation problem. How do you go into download mode or power reset or unknown upload mode? Any button combination doesnt seem to work for me.
How do I do?
Please HELP. I am struggling here
Thanks
the key to the i9000 rom/kernel button combo is VOL DOWN + using the USB trick. do not press vol up + down, just the down while you are plugging in the usb cable
i too am stuck in recovery mode. the only way i can get into download mode is by using both volume buttons. just holding the down button just sends me to revoery mode as well. how can i fix my phone in download mode?
nevermind, reinstalled 2.2 and it works now.
Eureka I got it...I think
I installed froyo 2.2 i9000 on my captivate and got stuck in recovery mode...power button doesnt select and when I hold down the up and down vol buttons I couldnt get the downloading icon anymore either. Then I remembered something from another post....
Home + Vol Down + Power = Downloading Icon
It worked for me....let me know if this helped....I'm officially unbricked.
Hey. I'm in the same boat. My Captivate has I9000 firmware running it and it won't run properly. I can't access the settings to enable USB debugging in order to boot in either Recovery or Download using adb and no button combination works for me. I can't use button combos to boot into either Recovery or Download mode.
Does anybody have any idea what is going on and how to fix this?
JPBentley-- Since the I9000 firmware is set to use physical buttons, and the Captivate doesn't contain any, once you get into recovery mode, you cannot get out. The standard Captivate key combinations to get into download mode do not work, as do the combinations to get into download mode via the I9000 firmware. Basically, you get to a dead end. Unless there is some way to flash the phone's ROM outside of download mode, which I doubt, your best bet is to return the phone for a replacement. After haggling around with AT&T for a while, they admitted that installing the I9000 ROM doesn't invalidate your warranty, so they should take it back. They did with mine, and now I'm running the official Froyo leak. Good luck with your new phone!
SOLUTION
For all those that are having this problem, Ive struggled with it & tried EVERY possible button combination & nothing worked.
The ONLY solutions I have found is to use a usb JIG. Take out the battery, sim card & sd card, plug in the Usb JIG & put the batter back in. Give it a couple of seconds & I'tll enter recovery mode without pushing any buttons. You dont even need to push the power button, it's that simple.
Here is an image of how to make one if you are electronically inclined, personally I am not so I found a local electronic parts store & they put on together for me.
If you want, you can also buy one online, I cant post a link becuase Im a new member but just search for "samsung usb jig" on ebay.com & youll find plenty.
shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=samsung+usb+jig&_sacat=See-All-Categories
yes, i think you need to build a jig or buy one online if you want to play with custom rom. you may not need it now, but you may need it just in case.
That's not even close to a brick. Are you using a usb port closest to the motherboard on your pc? Is your cable good? Make or buy a jig, that will put your phone into download mode.
Sent from my blazing fast Captivate running Continuum GB ROM using Tapatalk Pro
Hey Guys I know there a lot of threads like the one I am about to start up but those do not apply to what I have done to my phone.
So to start off I know I do not have a lot of posts but that is because I usually find all of the information that I need by reading through the forums. I have experience with flashing various roms onto my captivate. Today I decided I would try out an I9000 rom on my Captivate. I was following the instructions provided by this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=791366
I downloaded the files that the poster said to download. I got to step 2 where I flashed the JM8 PDA. I think this is where I messed up because I after I did this my phone boots directly into recovery and spits some information out. Which is the following (this is the text under the recovery menu options):
update media, please wait ...
update media, finished
# MANUAL MODE #
-- Appling Multi-CSC...
Installing Multi-CSC
mps_dat value: ATT
copy_multi_carrier from: ATT
multicsc : can not access to /system/csc/ATT/system/
copy_common_data
Thats the end of the information spit out by the recovery menu. My problem is that since I flashed some version of the I9000 kernel there is no way for me to enter the download menu so I can restore back to stock. Please Please guys I really need the communities help with this. I am screwed if I take the phone to AT&T because when the phone boots it has the I9000 splash screen that says galaxy s phone gt i9000.
The help will be greatly appreciated and I might even make a donation to the person that can help me!
Yank out battery, close Odin, Remove USB
Open Odin
Insert Battery
Hold Volume down (NO POWER)
Plug in USB
Phone should go into download mode - Start flash
Hey zilch I have tired that as well and I just keep going into the same recovery menu as before. Do you think it might be the fact that I do not have the galaxy s drivers on my computer???
If you can't get into download mode with the button combos (hell, I couldn't) you should still be able to use adb to reboot into download mode. So:
Plug in usb
Open Odin
type from a console in the android sdk tools directory "adb reboot download"
Use odin when you get into the download mode.
Also, Zilch, you've helped me out before, you're the man.
You dont need separate drivers if you had the Captivate ones installed... it should work either way, but if you have no drivers at all, that could be an issue
Edit: If it's plugged into USB and you didnt hit power it shouldn't power on the phone to go into recovery menu... if you did the button combo wrong it should just show the battery
Install the drivers!
I meant I do have the Captivate drivers installed but when the phone turns on and enters recovery mode my computer (windows 7 x64) notifies me it is searching for drivers and then fails.
To get into download mode:
1. Remove Battery, SIM, SD
2. Open Odin
3. hold volume up + down buttons
4. While holding them down, put the battery
5. still holding them(buttons) down, plug the usb cable.
Phone should go to download mode and Odin should detect it.
From that screen if you can't get your button combos to work you're pretty much toast =/
You can try:
USB
Unplug battery
Plug in battery
Hold both volume buttons + power
keep holding the buttons, the screen will turn off, then turn back on
As soon as the screen goes black again, release the power button and hope that you get the android digger
MY PHONE IS FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!! I think what did the trick is I installed Samsung Kies and that gave me all of the drivers for the samsung phone thus giving me the ability to use adb in recovery. Thanks guys! Your'e post encouraged me to keep trying and not cuddle up in the fetal position crying myself to sleep!
this thread just saved my life. thank you to everyone that contributed
For future reference, since the button combos are different on the i9000 vs. the Captivate, I've found that I get into download mode every time on an i9000 ROM by yanking the battery, and then re-inserting it while holding volume down+power. I know you already got it resolved, but just keep that in mind, as it has never failed me. Only wish I knew about that combo back during the whole JPC fiasco!
Hi,
A friend gave me their old i8190 which has a broken screen. They haden't used the phone in a while.
It makes a noise when I turn it on, and the softkeys light up, but the screen is broken.
However, when I plug it into the PC- it doesn't come up as a device.
I do not want to buy a replacement screen (cost around $70 US) to find out it's broken elsewhere.
How can I determine this- is there anyway to mirror what should be on the screen? The previous owner doesn't know
You can try to start it in download mode, flash the 3 button combo for recovery (and maybe a custom recovery), reboot in recovery and connect with adb. You will be able to browse the device internal memory and you'll know if cpu and ram works ok.
If you have a rom with usb debugging enabled by default you can run apps using adb (and take screenshots): http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4567904/how-to-start-an-application-using-android-adb-tools
Also check this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13326806/enable-usb-debugging-through-clockworkmod-with-adb
Well I'm a bit lost- I'm using the 3 button combo (Home+Volume up+ Power key). Is that combo correct?
Without being able to see my screen, how to I connect with adb?
It makes noises like my PC detects the device, but nothing comes up.
I do have special USB drivers for my I9310 installed- could they be conflicting or anything?
i8190 doesn't have the VolUp+Home+Power combination active by default. You have to start in download mode (VolDn+Home+Power, followed by VolUp) and use Odin to flash a patch to activate the combination for recovery (you'll find the patch here on the forum). If Odin doesn't detect your phone you probably have some other problems except the display.
After you flash the patch you can use VolUp+Home+Power to boot into recovery. When you are in recovery adb is active (even in stock recovery). Just type "adb devices" and you will see your phone.
I don't know about the drivers.
I keep trying the combo (VolDn+Home+Power, followed by VolUp) but it doesn't seem to show up in Odin. I don't need a patched Odin for it to work do I?
How long to I have to wait between VolDn+Home+Power & VolUp? And is VolUp by itself?
Sorry for the obvious question- but I've been trying for hours without any success.
You just need Samsung drivers for odin to detect your device, not sure if your special drivers is the problem, try downloading this one
Should be around 5 seconds, holding it any longer wont do anything so just continue holding if you're not sure, then just hit vol up only
Thanks for that.
It might be completely broken
I've tried two computers- installing the Samsung drivers, and using Odin, but the phone isn't showing up at all.
It's strange, because it sounds like it does work. I switched it on- and the volume buttons seem to make noises, and I even somehow took a photo.
What could be wrong? Thanks
I really don't want to throw this phone away.
Like I said- it seems to work (takes photo's) but nothing comes up when I plug it into any PC... I don't want to spend $100 on a new screen either, to find out it's broken.
Please help me out.
Remember to plugg cable to phone after key-combo.
I have been reading around, but this is my first thread, and I'm looking for some help.
I got a G920T, and I was trying to get a custom rom installed, got twrp working, but after running xtresolite, twisted and VN-ROM installers (yes, i checked to download the ones for my model) and factory wiping had no luck, phone was just stuck at "powered by samsung" screen. So I decided trying to go back to stock, but ODIN gave me only fails.
Tried: AOCG, COF6 and EPD1 getting failed on writing from ODIN, then I realized i couln't get into twrp anymore, so I tried to get to download mode BUT then I couldn't get to it, just got to the green custom os warning screen and pressing any button doesn't get me anywhere, from there I can only turn phone off.
Tried to emergency recover with Smart Switch, but since it doesn't get to Download mode, it's not recognizing phone, and neither does Odin.
So:
-vol down+home+power=green screen/turn off
-No Download mode
Any ideas? I found another guy somewhere asking for same issue, but he got no answers.
Thanks in advance!!
Power off phone first don't restart and try it
Download mode usually always exists even with software screw ups
Power down first then hold volume down +home button then power button keep holding till screen comes up then chose volume up to continue to download mode .
IT takes like a few seconds to get it to power to download mode sometimes between 2-6seconds in my experience
For Odin try newest version and just reflash the idle kernel 3.0.2.0 twrp for s6 6.0.1
Very important you unchecked auto reboot in Odin before you flash twrp again .
You have to manually reboot after it flashes
Then you should be able to swipe to allow modifications then either restore rom backup or sideload a rom.
You can also recover your phone I'f you mount USB otg in twrp and down load a rom to it on the flash drive just a idea
If you wanna go to stock Download uvu3epd1 from Samsung site
Hey,
Thanks a lot for your answer androidddaaron!
It came to the point it went off and it wasn't charging when connected. No powered by samsung message, no download mode, nothing, so, in my desperation i placed the phone over a qi charger i use for my nexus7, after about 30-40 minutes, i grabbed it, it was very hot, and not even powering on (just grey battery not moving), so i decided to go deeper, took advantage of the heat to remove back cover and began to strip it apart.
I bridged the power on/off contacts directly on the board, and what was my surprise, powered by samsung message. So i got to figure out the combination for vol- contact on the board (3 contacts for volume: gnd, vol+ and vol-). Turns out i could get this time through and got to download mode . I'm waiting right now for software download to complete, it will probably take a couple hours, since i'm only getting 1.8Mb/s.
Before starting software download with Smart Switch (Odin not working here), i made tests for buttons, they seem to be closing circuit as expected with tester, BUT, when attached to board, i'm not getting the correct behavior, so i'm thinking i might have a faulty vol- or something, right now, working directly on board (no back cover, no aluminium), no buttons, bridging contacts as needed.
I'll wait for smart switch to finish and hopefully getting phone to work. I'll report after that. :fingers-crossed:
Umm.. I don't know what your saying sounds like you tore apart your phone.
The button combo works as I mentioned how to.
Flash the right twrp.. as mentioned with the procedures .
Then USB otg flash a rom
OR try odin flash stock
Best of luck
I recently unrooted my phone but then tried to reroot again using ODIN, i tried to flash a CF Autoroot file on odin i found online and disabled autoreboot like it said
since then my phone will boot at all, it is stuck on the samsung boot screen and will not go anywhere, it will not let me into recovery and it will not let me into download mode, when i hold volume down and power it just reboots back to this screen.
after waiting over 14 hours i finally think i've managed to drain the battery, the issue is when i charge the phone again it switches itself on automatically for some reason and goes straight to that screen, i haven't tried to connect it to a computer yet as im at work and not at home.
please help, anyone have any ideas how i could fix this or is it fully bricked? I've rooted multiple phones in the past including this one and never had any issues, i've soft bricked before but managed to just get back into custom recovery, obviously i cant do this this time as the phone isnt rooted
thanks
its probably just a case of having to hold the bixby button, vol down, and pwr at the same time for long enough. also, try holding all 3, and releasing only the power button. May have to do this a few times, but hard-bricked devices dont even usually show the samsung logo
cf autoroot dosent exist for n960f. you flashed something that isint for the note 9. your recovery is probably screwed up because if this.
dl mode should still be accessible. search and read.
Open Odin with stock firmware and take the down button and Bixby button at the same time put your cable on the phone to go on dowloand mode
---------- Post added at 09:22 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:21 PM ----------
And flash the latest stock firmware for your version
connect usb cable to pc and hold vol down+ bixby+power button together. when your phone screen goes black to reboot insert usb cable to phone and release power button only it will go to download mode. this is the only way to get in download mode when phone stuck on samsung screen or is in bootloop. or let the battery drain out and phone turn off. Then hold vol down + bixby button and insert usb cable in phone. Do not press power button. it should go in download mode.
