Hi,
When I got my Droid, I couldn't believe all the stuff that came preinstalled with the phone, so I started deleting everything that seemed unnecessary. Given the fact that I already reflashed the phone 20 times in the last week, I made a little script to help me out. I thought I would share it with you in case it comes handy to someone.
BIG NOTE 0: There's a system part that Motorola uses to get stuff from your phone. It's called Data Collector. Whenever any app crashes, it makes quite a big dump, with your network carrier, signal level, applications installed, applications running and a lot of stuff that isn't opt-in. In fact, one of the scripts (/system/bin/bugtogo.sh) can take screenshots of your phone. I don't like being spied, so I tried to remove it all. Cannot be certain though, but I would recommend you to remove, if you like your privacy, at least, the DataCollector apks, and to empty the bugtogo.sh script from /system/bin
BIG NOTE 1: I don't use this phone in the US, so I don't know if I'm breaking part of the CDMA support. It still shows up in every settings and I don't have any reason to think it won't work, but since I can't test it in anything except GSM/UMTS, I can't know it for sure.
BIG NOTE 2: The script will install Apollo (Music Player), Nova Launcher (homescreen replacement), and Cyanogenmod's Gallery app. If you don't want them and want to keep Blur and the default gallery (the script doesn't remove the music player just in case it's needed by some other app), then don't use this script, or modify it as you wish.
BIG NOTE 3: I am not responsible for anything if this causes a mess. Worst case scenario you'll need to flash back the system partition (fastboot flash system system.img), and then reroot your phone. You have been warned.
This is what it removes:

Instructions:
1. Root your phone if you haven't already
2. Install Busybox from Google Play if you haven't already
2. Uncompress the zip into your internal sdcard. You should get this:
Code:
/sdcard/removecrap/Apollo.apk
/sdcard/removecrap/Gallery2.apk
/sdcard/removecrap/com.teslacoilsw.launcher-1.apk
/sdcard/removecrap/remover.sh
3. Run from a terminal on the phone, or from adb (always as root)
sh /sdcard/removecrap/remover.sh
4. Wait until the phone reboots
5. 200 extra Mb of system and a lot more free ram for your apps. Oh, and Motorola won't get another bug report from you
EDIT: Ooops, Reupdated the zip file, it was deleting one extra file (motosignature inside the framework folder)
EDIT2: Didn't catch Carrier IQ's qer binary on /xbin. Unfortunately we can't touch those binaries since they're in the randisk, so I updated the script so it removes the logfile qe generates and replaces it with a folder so it can never write the scan results again (thank you bofh.bug for the links!)
That's great, but you'll probably have trouble installing whatever official update comes next, since the updates generally expect certain apps to exist (with correct checksums too) so that they can be updated.

Probably OTAs will fail after running the script, but fixing it is as easy as reinstalling the system partition with fastboot and then applying the OTA

This does disable all data connectivity (3G/4G) for CDMA users, you can still receive texts and calls, but will not be able to get data services.
When I have time I will make update this script to work with CDMA users.

Were you able to fix the script so it works for CDMA users? Or, do you know what apps breaks it?
Very nice script, thanks. Easy way to run it by using Root Browser: open as script. But as for me QuickPick is better than ICS Galerry

Hi biktor_gj , could you make a similar script for Android 4.1.2? Very grateful in advance

I did again the script for the jelly bean update. This time it removes less crap, since it seems Motorola left a bit less than on previous versions. This will remove the annoying "Foreign card" warning when you boot the phone with some non-verizon sim, the acoustic warning when you turn up the volume, smart actions and so on.
IT WON'T REMOVE THE APPS. It will leave them here:
Apps: /system/app/oldapps
system binaries: /system/bin/oldbin
Framework: /system/framework/oldframework
If you encounter any problem, you can simply move back the files through adb and the phone will be like before applying the script.
NOTE: Only tested on GSM. Probably won't work on CMDA since it's missing most of the Verizon stuff. If you can identify which apps are needed for CDMA to wokr again tell me and I'll update the script accordingly.
I run the script from ADB and worked like a charm. Been using it for 24hours and no problems so far, but you never know, so use at your own risk
Code:
[email protected]:~/Documents# adb push removecrap2.sh /sdcard/removecrap2.sh
[email protected]:~/Documents# adb shell
[email protected]_maserati:/ $ su
[email protected]_maserati:/ # sh /sdcard/removecrap2.sh
It works great, thank you. Good work.

Hi to all, i found two app : ModemPanicReporter.apk and ModemStatsService.apk. What they are doing ? Maybe it is necessary to remove they too ? Removing these applications will improve battery life.

This is for sprint device.
By changing the settings database file to include
Tether_dun_required
Value=0
It did not work.
But when I also added (to the buildprop file) the line
net.tethering.noprovisioning
Value=true
the hotspot setting icon appeared in the dropdown menu.
Have verified data is flowing back and forth to other device.

I also confirm that changing these settings allowed the icon to show up on the drop down menu. Followed these instructions:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/go...-kitkat-new-method-t-mobile-without-root.html
Except I run linux and I used adb to pull the settings.db file off the phone and modified it in Linux and then I copied it back. One less thing to do on the list now.
Can anybody confirm this working on T-Mobile?

Yes. I'm using the T-Mobile $30 plan, 5Gig data 100 minutes talk.
I'm not familiar with needing a "trick" to enable tethering. I have a grandfather unlimited plan with AT&T and have always tethered without issue on my Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. I am now hearing reports that tethering is in some way disabled on the Nexus 6. Is there a method to enable tethering without rooting? I really don't like to go through the hassle of rooting and like to get easy OTA updated. Thanks

Nice. That's the plan I use as well. So you just followed the same steps as the Nexus 5 to edit the database settings file?
From what I have read, T-Mobile needs only to modify the settings database while sprint needs an additional buildprop modification as described earlier.

The same steps in the link I posted. With the excepiton of copying the file off the device and using debian's sqllite3 to modify the file and copy it back.
I also used adb shell (from my memory):
adb shell
su -
mount -o remount,rw /system
echo "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" >> /system/build.prop
exit
exit
adb reboot

Ah. I see. You actually modified the build.prop instead of the database file. Right on. I didn't know that would work as well. Thanks!

Actually I modified both. I just made my life easier by using linux sqlite3 to modify the file instead of finding an android specific sqlite3 to install on the phone.

Oh. Okay. I don't have a Linux machine, so it was easier for me to just use the SQLite Editor app on my N5 to change it.
In regards to T-Mobile, I can confirm this:
I am a long-time T-Mobile customer. I am on a grandfathered plan with the original $20 truly unlimited data add-on plan. This includes NO tethering allotment.
I performed the "tether_dun_required=0" hack, and I can now properly tether, even though I have no tethering provisioned on my T-Mobile account.
As a matter of fact, once I added the tether_dun_required=0, then rebooted my phone, I now have a Hotspot icon in the pull-down shade that was not there before I did the hack. (See screenshot below).
As a sidebar, I did not have to edit the build.prop file to get this to work.
Using G2/G3 debloat lists and my knowledge, I used Debloater to disable all the things I don't want/need. Here is the output of the Debloater tool export so you can use this to debloat yours. Suggestions are welcome and I'll be happy to update the list.

This list freezes the LG Update tool (to prevent OTAs) and the T-Mobile Carrier IQ package.
Edit: Updated list to include Carrier IQ. Use Voodoo to properly identify if Carrier IQ is running.
Edit 2: Updated txt file by removing Chrome.apk from the list (I use Chrome Beta). The latest list will NOT disable Chrome.
Carrier IQ is not found after disabling the apk (again, this is without root)
Thanks for the list. After I rooted I used TB to freeze everything with lge in it. Including "com.lge.provider.s..." Which turned out to be .system and .systemui
Needless to say I felt like a noob and had to factory reset the phone to unfreeze them.
yes, thanks for this, very useful!
so the TMO_AppSource.apk is the Carrier IQ?

I have recently rooted my H811 0H with the Low Effort method and installed TWRP. I have also used the debloater tool to get rid of bloat before and after rooting. Just recently, I noticed FB would crash whenever I posted anything. I uninstalled and reinstalled FB, but that didn't fix it. I went into the debloater tool and enabled LGStartupwizard. I certainly don't understand how these things could be related, and I don't know if they are, but I figured I would put it out there and if anybody else has the same trouble, they could try this fix.
Great work to all the devs out there! I'm eternally grateful and I'll continue to buy some beers when finances (the wife) allows.

Oops! haha, it happens. Glad you were able to recover. I would recommend you delete the OTA apk, since some people are worried the force updates might still happen even with a disabled/frozen APK. Guess it depends on how paranoid you are

You're welcome!
Actually, I was wrong. I installed Voodoo CarrierIQ Detector and it found it. That Play Store app is not good. I'll have to go back and find the right APK, might not be removable without root.

No more FB crashes.

Thanks for the heads up! I don't have any issues with my Facebook app and I disabled LGStartupwizard. Maybe the way it is removed with root causes issues, but just disabling without root doesn't. Or it might be something else.

No, this is the heart of CIQ:

Voodoo is the only app that detects all of it.
I missed LTDDM.apk. Now that it's removed, Voodoo doesn't detect Carrier IQ

The package list I posted does not affect WiFi calling. I usually have it disable because my wifi at home doesn't work well with this phone, but I just tested it for you.
So this tool only disables them and not actually delete them?

If you have root, it will delete them. If you don't have root, it will disable them. You don't need root to keep the bloat from interfering with your phone, which is a plus for me. The space that I could save by deleting is negligible.

MicroMod777's debloated ROM is working great. I had previously done a partial debloat myself, but figured it would be a bit cleaner to load his ROM. There were still a few things that he left in that I decided to remove.
I wouldn't say it is any better than removing them yourself, but if you are not comfortable removing them it is a safe option.
I don't remember is Quick Memo was in the debloated ROM or if I removed it myself, but the LG remote app was missing. I just restored it from TB and it works fine.

You won't be able to unfreeze it because it will not longer exist. But if you backed up the app and the data in TB before you flash you will be able to restore.
As for unlocking the bootloader, since your on T-mobile all you have to to is select "enable OEM unlock" in developers setting. Turns out the T-mobile bootloader isn't really locked .
If you follow the instructions for installing TWRP via the link in my signature it will walk you through it.
Edit: I just realized you asked why and not how. The bootloader has to be unlocked to install a custom recovery AFAK.

During call, wifi icon disappears. Why? Very irritating. It's not a bug, since me and the wife both have a 3T and I have re-flashed mine multiple times in its life span, and that has always irritated me. I often need to make sure I'm on wifi during a long conference call for work. See screenshots. Any ideas?
I also forgot to mention the battery percentage goes away too, which is also handy during a long call.
The culprit is the OnePlus' incall app - you can remove it, but you have to be rooted, unfortunately.

Thanks for the reply. But when I rename it, nothing appears when I'm in call. It rings, but nothing shows. I don't understand how that fixes anything if I can't even use the call menu. Am I missing a step? I had to put it back the way it was.

In system settings, change "default sim for calls" to "always ask".
Hmm strange I had that enabled when I had the module installed. The dialer didn't even show the option to switch sims though. Unfortunately I just had to remove the module through magisk. I use the second sim for business so really need the ability to decide which sim to call from during the day. Thanks for your help

I don't know what module you installed, I linked you to the zip with Google Dialer framework, I didn't say anything about Magisk.
I'm on AOSP based ROM with GApps atm, so I don't have to flash framework anymore, but when I was on OOS 3.5.4, then after flashing framework and installing Dialer apk from apkmirror, everything worked flawlessly.
Maybe try to do it again - reflash your ROM, flash dialer framework, remove opincallui, install Google Dialer app, set as default, set default sim for calls to always ask.
The choice of which sim to use when calling pops up after dialing a number. The dialer has no buttons for each sim separated.
If you don't want to use Google's dialer, then you can use OnePlus' one. IIRC, after removing opincallui, it still worked.

Oh ok thanks for the pointers I really appreciate it. I'll have to give it a try again
I have just acquired a Samsung Galaxy A40 phone. In my opinion, it has one of the best size/price/performance ratios on the market, reason why I bough it.
However, one very sad point about it is that there is still no LineageOS or any other custom ROMs to this phone, forcing myself to stick to the Samsung ultra-bloated distribution.
Having to accept this fact, my first action was to clean the phone the best I could, by removing any unnecessary crap from Sansumg and others from Google, Linkedin, Facebook and anything not strictly necessary. I based my list on some available (find ref on the script), but I also added some other useful commands.
Let me know if this works out for you, and if you have any point to add to the list. Find it attached on the Gist below:
https://gist.github.com/joaofl/7671e7e96a760e9b368992d6694a33d9
Before running it, I recommend reading the comments on the scrip, so that you dont end up without keyboard for example.
Hope it suites you!
By the way, do you have any information on when or if there is anybody working on a custom ROM (Lineage preferably) for this device?
EDIT:
There is no need to be root!

Instead of removing system apps you can simply disable them which is easily reversible.
If the Disable button is grayed-out in the Settings > App > app's info see this XDA article: How to disable any pre-installed system app bloatware on Android without root using adb

Beautiful.
I'm new with Galaxy A40, i'm really not a fan of Samsung but it was great to have the idea of making a phone lower than 15cm that is my need for lot of reasons.
I was just preparing to remove some system apps like bixby and samsung launcher, than i found out this script but... may you please give a description of most incomprehensible apps in the list?

A big thanks to joaofl for getting this list together for us!!!
Here's some info that might help others...
- This article has info (it's further down in the page) on how to use the script (you copy and paste it into Windows command promt/cmd as admin and after installing ADB... link in the article below).
https://piunikaweb.com/2019/03/25/samsung-galaxy-s10-remove-bundled-bloatwares-without-root/
- There's a typo in the script... Lines 84 onwards on the code has a typo where it says 'pm' rather than 'adb'. Changing that before you paste it into cmd fixes it.

Indeed, there were some errors there. I updated the script now, and it should work better now.
and NO, you dont need to be root to run it.
I prefer to remove stuff instead of disabling it, as it free up some space. Worst case, you need to restore the phone.
Yesterday I disabled a lot of unnecessary apps on my Galaxy A40. At a certain point the device was locked an a message said something about "not authorised removal of billing/paying apps". I had to do a hard recovery because I could not enable any of the apps. In fact I could do nothing with the phone
I mention this because on all the lists I found on the internet the billing/paying apps are listed as bloatware/unnecessary which was not true in my case. My A40 is customised by hutchison (drei) maybe this has something to do with it.
edit: the package name which is locking the phone is
com.samsung.android.kgclient
HTH and have a nice day!
Does anyone know if a factory reset from Settings will restore all the apps removed via this process?
EDIT: It does.
Can you say which apps cannot be removed OR disabled?

Do not remove Samsung Payment Services (using root), if you do you will get a locked/unusable device, it will show 'Device locked because Payment services was uninstalled without authorization' and reflash will be needed.

Thanks, I'll just stick to disabling apps until I get to know this phone a bit better! The battery monitor doesn't say I have anything chewing up CPU and I'm only losing a few % overnight on idle (even with LED notification fix) so I must have optimized a good bit already.

Adb doesn't need to be Rooted to be used
Just activate USB debugging(see tutorial about développer mode), and use cmd from your PC (and have adb.exe in a directory for sure)
Pay attention that the phone will Ask you to confirm the authentication as soon as you set "adb start-server"
For the backup, you have already asked it in another thread in which i answered you.

I just recover all my files from another Samsung Galaxy to new A40 with own Samsung account backup . There is also Google backup but it is not complete . Samsung backup satisfied me a lot . Just register , sign in Samsung account and from phone settings click on backup .
No need root , of course .
Regarding removing bloatware there are plenty of tutorials on this subject . Just look for it . It's all about adb shell cmd and activate debugging mode from phone . You need also an apk inspector from Google Play to know for sure name of apk you want to uninstall . Don't touch system apks , lists with bloatwares can be uninstalled you can find here on xda (galaxy phones) .
Personally I remarked besides their importance , apks like Calendar and Google Search eat a lot battery . I don't need these apks so I got rid of those and another and I can say battery was semnifically improved . I use also dark mode (from usb debugging) , native digital wellbeing for nights and all-in-one tools apk for some special android characteristics like boost , boot , clean etc
It's important to mention all apks uninstalled still remained in android backup image so they can be restored from phone factory reset .
Succes !

I suggest factory reset then remove again certain bloatware . Don't touch system apks . Also try to backup your system to Samsung Cloud .
