I've been entertaining the idea of getting a Gear VR to watch video content off my sd card (not streaming) and have tried to search for video about people actually doing just that to get an idea of what to expect. It seem like there is Samsung's stupid simulated room with a screen. I would much rather it be full screen like I'm just holding the phone in front of my face. Is that not possible or is there a reason for the simulated room? Can VR even play local content? I'd hope so? Thanks for your info in advanced.
Also, do you think it's worth it buying one brand new or should I try to find a "nice" lightly used one? ($92 on amazon currently)
Install moonplayer. It can play local files. With the moonplayer app on pc you can even stream files from pc.

I'm using Skybox vr player to watch vr and non-vr movies on my sd-card and over my network.
And if you use something called Samsung Cast, you can open up streaming applications and send it to that moon player and watch streamed content direction from your phone.

You can also use the default Oculus Video Player, which comes bundled with the Gear VR software to play locallly stored content on your device on the GearVR.

I am relatively new to android from a blackberry. I have a verizon galaxy tab and I have downloaded ttorrent in the market and when I download movies (so far I have tried avi and mp4 format) and try to view them they do not play with the media player and I do not get an error message it just goes to a black media player screen and doesnt play. I have tried implayer and arcmedia media players in the market and when I try to play the files it plays but with no sound and says I need to download coral player at real.coralplayer.com which apparently is a media player for a comp. Am I doing something wrong or does anyone have any advice on what media player to use. Or if anyone has any recommenda rt ions on apps that allow you to download movies and watch (preferably free). Thanks

Generally i dont encourage piracy so i will assume that you legally own these movies (read forum rules). Bottomline you cant watch this movie until you convert them into friendly format for the galaxy tab.
Follow this guide: http://www.thetechjournal.com/how-to/convert-and-watch-movies-on-samsung-galaxy-tabhow-to.xhtml
It should play just fine, no need off a other player, the stock one is as good and even better then the one's you find at market.
Just be shore that it not have DTS,DD audio, because Galaxy tab can't handle that audio.

Unless the Verizon one is crippled, those files should play just fine as the tab supports DivX, mp3, h264 and AAC among the other things. Could be an audio issue, but honestly i have trouble imagining an avi with an audio stream that's more than stereo. Then again, i've seen some of the weirdest stuff, like an h264 video inside an avi...

I used this workflow to convert some of the Blu-ray rips we have on our HTPC, as well as converting a few SD movies, worked perfectly for my tab. Movies play in stock apps.

From a quick Google, if you are being asked to download CoralPlayer, then the movies you are downloading are not actually usable, and you are being scammed.
What application allows us to download paid movies similar to iTunes? I have an iPad but prefer to use my Tab for watching flicks instead?
Thanks for the info. After further te st ting the only movies that seem to play for me.so far are mp4 movies. I have been using t torrent to dl movies. Anyone else have any other recommended apps through market.

Try installing mvideoplayer and vitalplayer. Those two should play everything else.

Dude you were so right...this is by far the best player out there right now! Thanks for the tip!
mobo player is very nice...one fantastic feature is that is sizes the video to the full screen. I was watching avatar on my train ride and the stock video player had it centered and not full screen....finished watching it wtih mobo!
thanks for the tip.
check diceplayer on market (GB required )
you can play 1080p MKV+DTS(or Flac/Ogg)

Here are top 5 Android movie APPs for movie lovers. You can use some of these APP to download or watch movies on Galaxy tab conveniently: " Netflix (free, streaming: US only)", "IMDb Movies & TV (free)", "VLC Direct Pro ($2.86)", "Movie Collection (free, ad-less version for $2.99)" and "GetGlue (free)". In addition, you also can rip DVD TO GALAXY TAB, but you need to consider the issue of legality. Good Luck !
Mobo player is great.
It now has support for subtitles within MKV containers without having to extract them. subtitles are great for foreign movies or for the hearing impaired and anime.
It also supports selecting audio track from within the container file. ie, Eng, JP audio track selection. I see a bright future for this app.

You forgot to say which app in your first post. Google Player uses their cloud (google drive I think) to store music. It is temporarily stored in /android/data/com.google.android.music either cache or files.

if i buy chromecast, can i watch online streming movies from alluc or any related streaming websites? that's the main reason i want one but if it doesn't then i'll skip buying it.
thanks guys.
I tried playing a movie on that site and it was half success.
You need the app vget, which can grab the links from embedded videos, such as putlocker or socketshare.
After that you serve the file through dlna or stream.
My device has trouble casting some media, that others can, they are working on a fix.
I was able to do all this but avia said the file was not compatible.
I have used this method for other sites, you just have to make sure it's compatible.
The most popular one here is showbox,

If you are watching on your PC, you should be able to cast the tab with chrome browser.
Is it possible to watch 3D Movies on a network drive (e.g. on a PC shared drive) in Gear VR?
I find it a pain to have to copy the 3D movies from the PC and then delete them and copy new ones again - especially given that 3D Movies could be pretty large and can take some time to copy over.
Thanks,
Osho
bump.. anyone?
Not with Oculus cinema. You can always use Kodi.
Thanks for the suggestion. Is there a Kodi app that can be used inside Gear VR? Any pointers on how to set that up?
Thanks,
Osho
Not the easiest butt you have 3 choices.
Download the movie via the kodi app on phone.
Tiurn on sbs in kodi settings (not ideal setup)
Use trinus from playstore and pc server app.

I don't know of a way do access them directly but you could use a file manager like ES File Explorer to copy them to your phone.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
I used BubbleUpnp and MediaHouse UPnP to play from Upnp sources, BSPlayer can also see networked devices such as Windows shares. Astro file manager can also see Windows shares. I used them on my Nexus 4, I just switched to Galaxy S6 and didn't check them yet.
I just use BubbleUPnP and VR player to stream the movies from my kodi server.
use kodi s 3d movies is the best way i can found... for now its OK...
This works for regular movies. I haven't tried 3D ones.

u/heavykick has discovered a way to launch MilkVR to stream over smb from ES file explorer.
I can't post the links but google "milkvr_streams_from_smb_es_file_explorer" for the r/gearvr reddit post.
Hi
yes, you can stream with milkVR from any http source. There is ESFileExplorer included because it starts a local http server. But there is a problem with the Oculus service. When ever you launch your GearVR is will close all running apps to give you full resources for your VR experience.
But when you use developer mode ESFileExplorer can run in background and stream smb to the local http server.
But when you have a NAS you can use a media server like plex with dlna like bubblUpnp or anDLNA or emby.media witg the emby app. I think it should also work with webDav.
Here are my reddit threads about this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/GearVR/comments/3vuopp/simple_lan_stream_to_milkvr_own_app_simple_server/
https://www.reddit.com/r/GearVR/comments/3wu6zg/milkvr_streams_from_smb_es_file_explorer/
Archos can play SBS video through dlna or smb share. I don't have my vr yet so I can't saynhow well it works.
I use Kodi extensively, and including on my phone using the official app.
I think this can be done using a the official kodi app, i dont see any reason why you wont be able to do it. In your kodi app you can setup smart playlists and map your SMB location.
It doesnt need to be copied manaually to your phone.
If you are within the network, you should be able to view the movies, but here is a question, will you be able to the 3d format movies in your samsung VR? My VR should come in by 24th, will check and let you know. I really dont know the function of the VR being compatible with 3d movies...
archos doesn't seem to work so well. BS Player works pretty good and you can zoom the image until you get a good fit.
Not to get at anyone but there is a lot of misinformation in this thread, many apps being recommended/suggested do not run in gear vr (do these people have one?).
I use emby media server on my pc, it's free and easy to set-up and this way I can access all my media through the gear vr browser and both 2d and 3d content is supported.
Hello.
I have a lot of 3d films(around 300-400gb) and I want to watch them on my Gear Vr Light. I have tested so far few players but to be honest i am not happy with them.
Every one have strong and bad sides.
How do I watch them?
- share folder on my laptop
- open network location through Es File Explorer(best explorer on earth!!!)
Open with..... :
1. AAA VR Cinema
2. Vr Cinema
3. Vr Player
4. Cardboard Theater
5. VRTV Free
6. Kodi
Not all of them support this feature and (specially in free version)
I also tried to open movies in MxPLayer and BSPlayer. But it did not work to well.
For me right now for some films best option is Kodi since the reality of the 3d is the highest from all players but it open's only Side by Side films and can't zoom out screen so you sometimes see only middle of the picture.
For many other reason the best is AAA Vr Cinema. You can play both SbS and HoU movies, you can set dimension of the screen, quality of the immersion is nice, but manage of the player is terrible. It is very hard to rewind forward or backward to the point you like.
All players have also one big minus. AC3 support or better to say lack of this support. So I must convert all movies to mp4 which is time consuming.
I am still waiting searching for better player or the best option to open movies in stock Gear Vr player with support of HoU/SbS and Ac3 not to mension that playing ISO files would be also nice welcome.
So... what player are you using and why?
what is a gear vr light?

The lack of support for AC3 blows
"Gear Vr Light" is just a marketing name of Consumer Edition(99$)
And to stay on subject.
Since yesterday for me the best option to watch 3d, 360 or any movie is to stream them to milkvr(search for the topic in Gear Vr thread)
It gives you the highest quality I have seen so far in any 3d video player.
Minus is that films must be in mp4 and that you need to install Emby on your pc to be able to stream films to your phone. Is it worth? Heallyeah!!
any dlna/http source will work

Cause When you have Samsung galaxy S6 Edge+ with 32gb and you have some aps(Eternity Warriors 4, Heartstone, NFS...), few mp3 flac albums you have 4-6gb letf on your sd card. If you want to have a good quality your mp4 will have around 8gb.
I have a folder with MP4 on my PC ~400gb and I watch any film I like, laying on my sofa.
It is really very simple

Hello,
i´m using VRTV PRO ( paid ) . It´s just great.
Does someone now how i can access my NAS Server directly ?
Now i use ESFileExplorer Pro /Network/NAS and than choose open with VRTV.
I have to do that for each file.
Is there a better solution ?
Thanks,

Tried CMoare Demo. always crashes when trying to connect to network
Found 2 Players that work great with network access.
My favorite is Archos Video Player.
Works great and you can choose in the Player between Archos Player or different Player to play Videos .
To change "the other Player" i have to disable this Player with AppDisabler Pro.
So this is really great.
The ohter one is VRange VRPlayer that comes with a little Programmfor for PC, where you just drop Files in a Window and than you can watch them on your Phone.
