Changing UI sounds with ADB, no root necessary? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

It's a simple question: can I still change system UI sounds with ADB if I'm not rooted? I realized after I got this phone that most of my time rooted was just spent customizing the phone to my liking, and for the most part, I can now do that without root. The only thing I can't find a way to do is change the UI sounds, but if I can push an apk to root with ADB, can I overwrite the system files with my own?

[Q] rooted Nook color 1.0.0

i sucessfully rooted my device several weeks ago. One small quirk is that i dont have adb access and i cant install 3rd party apks.
Here is my question: When i image the flash drive it makes a folder /data/app. If i drop the 3rd party apk's i want in there then redo the rooting process(even though its already rooted) will it install them?
Can u even reroot a rooted device? will it erase anything? Any information would be helpful.
You can not re-root a rooted device. It will not do any thing. To install app use ADB shell. There are lots of examples in the development threads.

[Q] Couple Sprint questions....I know its mainly Cricket here

As mentioned in the title, I know there are mainly Cricket users here, I have been reading for a while, but just joined. I am a dev, but am just now getting into Android development, and have just a couple questions. Before I start, I would like to point out that I do have the Sprint images that are available, and will explain my situation. Because Sprint shut down the 2.2 updates, I am currently on 2.1.
I am on my second Zio at the moment, as I loaded the wrong images onto it. (I have both Cricket and Sprint images, and wasnt paying attention). I rooted and started clearing out bloatware, but, I uninstalled a few things that I shouldnt have...I put them back, of course.
Well, I put them back in the /system/app folder, put it back to r/o permission, restarted my phone, and poof...all those apps were missing from both my SD card and the /system/app folder. So now, I cant open my market, load my Google account for syncing, add contacts, etc. In essence, if it doesnt pertain to Google directly, it works. Factory reset does not reload everything.
I wanted to reload the system.img, but I cannot find a decent ROM backup app that I dont have to use the market for- any suggestions?
Second, is there a way I can reload these specific apps, as to get things working how they should? A .zip file, or anything packaging these apps?
I am sorry if these are answered elsewhere, I just have not come across them. Also, sorry for this being so long.
OK, I'm gonna guess you have root explorer or similar and root access... You probably need to change the permissions of the system apps back to 0644 or rw r r then reboot. I personally mess with system apps and their permissions alot. If your phone gives you too much trouble but still boots the system and you have the Android SDK you can do adb shell then chmod 0644 /system/appnamehere.apk then reboot.
Sent from my Zio using XDA App
Yes, I do have Root Explorer. I havent messed a lot with the SDK, but, based on what youre saying, it contains the apps I need to replace? For a bit more insight, the apps that are missing are Google Talk, Google Apps, and Gmail. I tried keeping my system apps as r/w, but that did not help. I also got the .apks of the aforementioned apps, but the installs do not work. I got Google Talk to at least crash, instead of immediately closing, which is what Gmail and the Market do. From what I have been able to do, as I havent been near my system with the SDK on it, changing the permissions does not make a difference. I will keep playing with it and get back with the results.

[Q] Can't add apps to system on a rooted device (s-on)

I just rooted my htc one (att version) and i'm using superSU. I want to use BetterBatteryStats, which required to add itself as system app. I tried its own method, Titanium Backup, LuckyPacher and even move the apk myself by Root expolorer, but none of them works- It seems work, but after rebooting the apk I copied to /system/apps (or /system/priv-apps) disappeared.
So my question is, is this operation required "S-off"? I knew I can't delete bloat apps due to this, but INCREASE files into system folders is also prohibited? If so, how could SuperSU be installed into /system/apps in the first place?
I knew this question may sound stupid, please forgive my very basic knowledge about android and thanks!

You need to change your kernel, the stock kernel has write protection on it, try elementalx and no you don't need s-off

.OP folder and installing root-app without root.

Hi,
I recently find out about .OP folder on /data partition. In short in this folder there is a file and apps that phone should install after hard reset. Some of them are installed as "system" apps, so I thought that if editing the script with list of apps to install and adding custom apps like xposed or viper we could lock whole phone, install root-requiring apps and still keep all warranty.
I didn't tested it. It's just a theory. I'm not sure if it would work. Maybe someone would find it interesting and would like to look into it.
I know that some people don't won't to root their phone because of warranty so they might be intrested in it.
Best regards.
This phone is very easy to unroot and return to stock. I had a warranty replacement done and returning to stock unrooted/no note of tampering was simple.

Lost root and cant re-root

I had my phone rooted and all working fine on Nougat. I then tried installing secure settings for Tasker and since around this time, i've lost root and if i try flashing super su in TWRP, each time i boot and check i'm not rooted. If i open Super Su app it tells me that the framework needs to be updated and to reboot, i do this and it just keeps telling me the same.
The only thing i am thinking may have broken this is i found a guide to get Secure Settings working on nougat where someone suggested creating a folder with root file explorer called 'su' in system/bin. Now when i open up Titanium Backup it tells me it could not acquire root and say the attempt was made using the "/system/bin/su" command which im thinking means it's looking somewhere there is an empty folder?
I cant now of course delete the system/bin/su folder i created as i cant enable root in File Explorer so i'm pretty stuck and not sure what i can do. I've tried the cleanup and full unroot in the supersu app and then flashing supersu in twrp again but still says no root when i check
Any suggestions?

This post was a bit more informative than your "my device unrooted itself" post in the stable thread.
Dirty flash your system or use the file manager in TWRP to remove the offending folder.
I was thinking of trying that but fixed it a different way as I just posted in the SuperSU thread. But in case anyone else ever has this problem...
I fixed my issue. By disabling SuperSU and enabling again from the app settings and it gave me root. I then deleted a created su folder in system/bin that I manually created earlier when trying to get secure settings working.
