I bought an unbranded Note 8 directly from Samsung. I find that this version does not have native Wifi calling. I am aware of some services that provide free Wifi calls as long as both are using the same service (Skype, whatsapp, and so on). My current provider is AT&T, FWIW.
Has anyone found any app or workaround that provides me with Wifi calling? Is there any way to get this for general phone work?
You will need to flash the ATT firmware with ODIN. Just be aware that it will also add ATT bloatware apps.
what is the model of your phone

yup odin unless you have an exynos model then you could use the tekhd detotnator which converts it to att or tmobile

If you're on ATT, you'll need to use ODIN to flash the carrier firmware. This will bring back WiFi calling and VoLTE. But it will also bring with it all the carrier bloatware apps.

He just said he has the N950U1 which is the Snapdragon model, so detanator doesn't apply here.

It would need a TMOBILE ROM. Also unlocked bootloader

In order to have wifi calling you need the following:
1: Tmobile branded phone N910T model or any other tmobile smartphone.
2: You need to be on the Tmobile network using a tmobile sim card.
3: You need to use Tmobile stock firmwares or Tmobile custom roms.
You don't need to have an unlocked phone, wifi calling will work whether
your phone is locked to Tmobile or sim unlocked for other carriers.
Wifi calling WON'T work on international Note 4 unlocked or locked phones
regardless of the network, carrier or sim card you might be using.
Good luck!
Thanks for the quick responses!

Why cant the international note 4 with tmobile custom rom use wifi caling? I had the international note 3 and it worked.
I've been searching for a thread to talk about this on.
I just recently purchased an SM-N910T from rent a center. It's a t-mobile phone with a wacky RAC rom. Can I put a stock t-mobile rom on it to enable wifi calling with my t-mobile sim card?

As far as I can tell, the U is carrier locked to T-Mobile, and U1 is unlocked, is that correct?
https://swappa.com/compare/samsung-galaxy-s8-g950u-unlocked/samsung-galaxy-s8-tmobile
You got it. Swappa is pretty reliable on their specs. For nerds, by nerds.
U is carrier locked, and U1 is USA unlocked
So any MOD, ROM meant for U will work on U1 too?

How does one know the original model since all these can be changed with firmwares?
So if it's now locked to Sprint (which is cdma) can I still use it on gsm networks if it's unlocked? S8 has multiple bands right?

Yes, all SM-G950U phones in the US should support the same networks including GSM. I had a Sprint S8 that I unlocked and it worked on Tmobile and ATT without issues.
I have a Sprint S8 that was unlocked after I bought it and now using it with my own carrier (in South America). Only problem I have with it is mobile hotspot. There's no option available for hotspot in the settings.

Well, yes BUT the U is carrier (and bootloader locked) so, there aren't any roms or mods to begin with.

Hello All,
I need your help with some information regarding the Canadian Variant of the Note 8.
I have an unlocked SM-N950W with Telus firmware but I would like to flash to Rogers firmware to enable Wi-Fi calling. Currently the Telus network does not have Wi-Fi calling on their version of the Note 8 and I believe that the Rogers firmware should have this feature in the phone settings.
My carrier is Rogers but the Note 8 is an unlocked Telus device.
My main concerns are as follows:
- Can this be done via Odin?
- Is there any risks of bricking my lovely Note 8 by doing this?
- Can anyone confirm on their Rogers Note 8 that Wi-Fi calling works?
Any help and/or information from the XDA community would be greatly appreciated.

Is your actual carrier Rogers or Telus?
You can use Odin to switch between firmware for the same model, yes. Who is your service provider?
Did you buy your phone directly from Rogers? If you didn't then don't waste your time. You need a Rogers branded phone that has it's IMEI white listed. All other non-Rogers are blacklisted from using wifi calling.
My actual carrier is Rogers but the Note 8 is branded by Telus.

You can definitely change your CSC to Rogers without having to "flash" the phone; however, from what I've read, unless the phone was purchased from Rogers themselves, your IMEI would not be considered eligible for WiFi calling.

Well it's good to know. Seems like there's no sense in flashing the Rogers firmware if the IMEI needs to be whitelisted for Wi-Fi calling.
Do you guys think if I call Rogers that they will enable the IMEI to accept Wi-Fi calling on my account?
Do any of you have any (successful) experience getting this request met?
I tried calling, emailing etc...No luck. In the end they gave some bs that Rogers phones were loaded with "special" settings...

I purchased an unlocked Note 9 and all the networks tell me it won't work on any of theirs. AT&T, US Cellular, Verizon, Net10 all say no. I put my AT&T sim in and it works with low signal. Why would it not work? How do I figure out where this phone originated? I suspect Sprint because any phone from Sprint only works on Sprint.

Go to this site and run the IMEI. It will tell you if it's actually a U1 model or if it's a carrier model.
http://imeipro.info/samsung_imei_check.html
Whichever it is, you can just flash the ATT firmware, and it will work perfect on ATT. All the N960U and U1s are identical. Just different firmware.

Sprint, that's why I'm having issues with it. I purchased via Amazon. I managed to get it working on Net10 wireless CDMA, so it'll work. Had to activate with my S8+ though. Thanks for the link, that helped!

So if you got it with flash for sprint then maybe you need flash what was originally on this model?
I have the very same model and I just put in my LTE Verizon SIM and it worked right away.
This model is a boot locked, carrier unlocked, world band snapdragon version, that was never originally touched by any carrier.
I.E. No carrier bloat ware. SM-N960U1

I flashed AT&T but cannot get wifi calling. I ordered an AT&T one through Samsung last night. I'll return this one when I get it. The back of this phone says it's an N960U.
I forgot how crappy carriers are. AT&T unlocked my iPhone but no longer recognizes it. So, I can't get wifi calling to work before switching the sim.
Thanks a bunch to everyone for their input and workarounds! Have been out of the loop for a while.

Oh, my bad, yeah the "U" models do say you might lose Wifi calling. Good it worked out for you!
I would be disappointed if I needed Wifi calling, I use the cell line 24/7 here in the US everywhere I go.
I feel like Wifi calling is just giving my carrier a break.

There's actually a way to get WiFi calling on it working again. Look through the carrier switching threads in the Note 8 forums.
It's why I hate ATT and love T-Mobile. Everything works out of the box on T-Mo.

Well to be fair there will be places where signal will be weak or non and then you will be the one loosing.
They don't look at break is just way for the customers to get better signal every where they go or inside whatever tipe of building...

I also purchased an unlocked Note 9 on ebay. In "about phone", the model number is listed as SM-N960U1. On the back of the phone, it's SM-N960U.
The sites that tell you the model with the IMEI number are right, it's a Sprint phone. Samsung customer support said the same thing. However, the Sprint phone and the US unlocked phone share the same FCC ID.
Does that mean, they are the same radio hardware? Is it just the firmware that makes the difference in band capability? If you flashed the US unlocked version of baseband, would it be identical to the US unlocked version? I just want to make double sure!

OTA updates
Is there ever a chance an OTA security update can re-implement the hotspot check? I'm on VZW but I assume the possibility is the same for any carrier.

Technically it is possible. For example hotspot on Nexus 6P and OG pixel XL used to work without a problem when 7.1 was around on my Cricket line. Then with i think the December 2016 security patch Google blocked Hotspot on Cricket and ATT if you weren't paying for it. But with Samsung it's been over a year and a half and they haven't blocked it.

I wish I would have known this before I flashed my unlocked phone to AT&T firmware. Wifi Calling and VoLTE aren't as important to me as mobile hotspot but I'm guessing if I go back to the unlocked firmware I'll have to wipe my device and re-add all my Samsung Pay cards and call Amex and USBank again because they're bullish about mobile wallets and I'll have to re-do my Gear S3.
AT&T has the IMEI of my iPhone. I like to switch between my iPhone and Note all the time and I'm slowly coming to understand that cell phone service providers don't really cater to people like me who buy expensive unlocked phones outright and switch between two different devices all the time.
Hotspot Provisioning check AT&T note 9
Can anyone confirm that the U1 modded odin firmware flash still works, and what specifically doesn't work after doing this flash? Also, if there's any better methods for aquiring hotspot. I just picked up an AT&T note 9 for $500 off Offer up or Letgo, don't recall... Thanks in advance...
What about now with android 11? My u1 wont allow it anymore
