[Q] Samsung Galaxy S Overclock PLEASE READ

This thread is somewhat different from others. I am fully aware that overclocking requires a custom kernel however with the Application "Galaxy Tuner" my CPU on my SGS i9000 can go 1.2GHZ with a custom Voodo Kernel not supporting Overclock. I am not sure what method the guy uses and he only allows it to be used 2 minutes at a time, so I was wondering if this would be just as risky / safe to do as going into a new kernel and doing such.
If the first is not possible and I would have to use a custom kernel as it is safer, please PM me some kind of contact information as I am afraid I will break my Phone as I use a custom Voodo kernel + DArkys EXTREME ROM 9.X

Still need to know wheter or not it is safe to overclock the way the application "Galaxy Tuner" does or if its SAFER to do it with a custom OC'ing kernel.
If last, I need some help over Skype / msn

Exactly, views don't mean answers! It can be frustrating seeing a lot of views and no answer, but you must acknowledge that viewers may be looking for the answer themselves or just plain don't know. Be patient.

Well. Still, I am wondering about the overclocking that The application uses (Galaxy Tuner) because it manages to overclock a phone WITHOUT a custom OC'ing kernel. Hence i am wondering if it is just as SAFE to do as using a custom kernel.
If not, I need some guidance as I dont know how I can switch my kernel and update my ROM

The code to overclock existed on stock kernel sources apparently, it was just commented out.
When OC in this app is enabled, the CPU governor is changed to performance, and the clocks were changed. So I'd wager it's equivalent in terms of safety to a custom kernel.
Why only do the above for 5 minutes at a time when a custom kernel allows you to always have an overlclock? Just use a custom kernel..

I'm using a custom kernel to overclock to 1.2ghz and my battery is exactly the same as it's always been. I'm also underclocking to 100mhz with setCPU when the phone is idle so that's a big help. It's perfectly stable on mine but CPUs can differ so I suggest that if you do flash a custom kernel with overclock that you start lower and stress test just to make sure there are no issues. Also, don't save any voltage control settings as default until you have applied and stress tested.
Also, make sure to keep a spare kernel in zip form and always have backups.

I use super optimized kernel. Though I am looking for a 500-1000 HZ OC kernel. Any suggestion?

I don't know what method this app is using, but just due to my own paranoia I would say using a kernel with OC is safer. Too many horror stories of apps bricking phones due to small errors or badly written instructions.
Beyond that, it just takes experimenting. I am currently using DamienGTO's Ultimate Kernel OCed to 1200 and have had no problems with it, but there are a lot of high quality kernels available down in the Android Development forum. I suggest you install SGS Kernel Flasher from the market (a great app, makes kernel flashing painless and dead simple), download the newest versions of each kernel that says it supports OC, and spend a day flashing and testing. Just remember to disable any OC/UV, lagfixes or tweaks between flashings.

Unofficial build of CyanogenMod 11.0 for GT-I9506

since the official maintainer "solk2" for the GT-I9506 moved on to CM12 before providing a final build incorporating his latest fixes I decided to make my own builds.
According to my personal experience the battery life has vastly improved. In particular the power consumption while the display is off has decreased substantially. Solk2 has apparently fixed some issues with the kernel so the battery issues are gone. So for everyone not yet willing to transition to CM12 (in my case inter alia due to the currently unstable state and the lack of a stable Xposed framework in Android 5) this might be a good alternative.
I will gladly share my unofficial ROMs, however I would need someone to host the files in order to do that. If anyone would be so kind as to host ROMs please let me know.
If any relevant code changes to CM11 will appear I will most certainly compile a new version.
* IMPORTANT *
Please note that these builds are based on nothing else than the unchanged official code from Cyanogenmod, solk2 and others. So every credit goes to them.
I will not and cannot make any changes to the code. The only thing I can do and will do is build a ROM thereof in case some interesting fixes etc. appear. However, since CM11 is becoming outdated there will most probably not be a lot of changes to come.
Also, it should be understood that I take no responsibilities whatsoever if anything goes wrong when you install the ROM. Like the original ROM this is completely at your own risk!
However, you can expect that any ROM I share has been installed on my own GT-I9506 (with Samsung firmware of 4.4.2 nordic countries) and runs without obvious issues. Your mileage may vary.

At least some of the issues with solk2's latest official builds were apparently caused by preceding changes to the kernel code. My builds use the latest code base of February 16 incorporating solk2's latest fixes (see https://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_kernel_samsung_ks01lte/commits/cm-11.0).
Unless solk2 will make further changes to the kernel (which I doubt as he has turned his attention to CM-12) the changes in my builds are only related to merged changes in the official Cyanogenmod code for CM-11.0 (see http://review.cyanogenmod.org/#/q/status:merged+branch:+cm-11.0). In other words the kernel will remain the same, even if the build date thereof may change.

You do not need flash any stock. Just flash TWRP, make full wipe and flash this rom + gapps

Why is this rom so ignored? I flashed it a few days ago and I find it's great. Very very fast and absolutely rock solid. No bugs, no fc, no reboots.

I do not know how many have installed this ROM (anyone having done so please leave a reply here).
I see only a very limited number of reasons to transition to a new version of a ROM or Android in general:
1. If the new version provides functionality that I want or need (and material design isn't one of those); or
2. If the new version fixes a bug or security flaw (there is none that I know of).
At the moment CM-12 does not fulfill any of these criteria, instead I would lose the solidly working Xposed framework for an alpha version thereof.
I'm not intending to advertise this ROM, inter alia because the only thing I did was build it, so the credits should still go to solk2. But if anyone hears that someone has issues with the latest "official" version of CM-11, please direct them here.

What should happen if I update via OTA as it ask me to do?
edit: I realized that the updates suggested are cm12 so can be ignored

I had one strange bug in this rom (maybe reason was in gapps): Go to SMS app, push new and write name in address line from above: phone getting list of contacts to chise. You choisew one and see wrong number (without region code) in address line.
If you push on contacts button and choise contacts here everything will be ok.

Then maybe you should ask Arter97 what's different in his kernel... Without any hint what difference causes this no-one has a realistic chance to find out. Or ask him to adapt his kernel to CM-based ROMs. I didn't know that his kernel does not work with CM, is that so?
Also, on my S4 I do not have frequent reboots. However, I once activate the advanced option "kernel samepage merging" and then had two reboots in 1-2 days. After resetting to deactivated no more reboots since about 2 weeks... Worth a try to check.
I would like to help, but I simply do not have anywhere near the experience and knowledge to find a kernel bug that apparently solk has not found himself!

Last time ago arter's kernel was compatible but he removed the support because he didn't have time to maintain two kernels.

Well, another problem... I'm not sure if it is a bug in settings.apk or only in connection with our device. However, when you check the option is always ON, and upon leaving the settings.apk it will always return to being ON. So at least I can say that turning if OFF cannot have had an effect because it was never turned OFF.
However, I will try with KSM disabled now. For the time being you can manually disable it and lock this state (well at least until next reboot) by doing the following in an adb session or the terminal:
echo 0 > /sys/kernel/mm/ksm/run
chmod 444 /sys/kernel/mm/ksm/run
Another way would be to recompile the kernel with the option disabled. It would be far better to fix the issue in settings.apk. However, to file a bug report one would have to check if the behaviour is the same in the official nightlies... I read that someone reported this as a bug for the Oneplus One, but it was never resolved.

As an somewhat veteran in other xda-like forums, I advertised link to neudlis reply with his/her first build because it has been rock stable and fast. With my I9506 nordic.
No other customs have been this solid for 3 weeks straight, and I have been trying roms since december !

Although I cannot often enough remind everyone that I did not provide or change any code but just build it that's still not too bad for the first build of a guy not that much into coding .
After a weekend with not much use but some hours of listening to audio books I was left with 21% charge after more than 3 days (see attached screenshot). That's just awesome! So I believe it can safely be said that any power consumption bug was resolved by solk2's latest patches to the kernel.
Also I believe that turning off kernel samepage merging might have helped additionally, so I encourage everyone to try it as well (see above post for manual way to turn it off as bug in settings.apk won't let you otherwise). In my opinion this option should default to off as it is said to be potentially unstable and the I9506 surely has enough RAM not to need it. So I prefer to lessen CPU load for longer battery life in exchange for potentially increased RAM occupation.

B14CKB1RD vs ElementalX?

I am currently running PN 7.1.1, with ElementalX. I've been reading the B14CKB1RD kernel thread, and people seem extremely satisfied with it. Has anyone went from ElementalX to B14CKB1RD? Any noticable differences?

I can say from experience his kernel is the only n6 kernel I will use now, I've used most of them before I went to blackbird.

both are very good better than fracos kernel ,
Elementalx : stable, battery friendly and fast updates & regularly
B14CKB1RD : battery friendly but not stable and the update is slow

B14CKB1RD kernel better than ElementalX, because have more features and better customisation.
ElementalX like stock, more simple and easy.
i tries many kernels and using ElementalX for few mounts, but better kernel for me it's- FLASH and B14CKB1RD

Don't post threads like this. In my opinion it's rude to ask X kernel vs Y kernel or X rom vs Y rom.
Make a backup of your "boot" partition in TWRP. This contains your kernel and ramdisk. Flash any kernel you want, and there are plenty more than just the two you mentioned. Use kernel adiutor-mod to look at the settings you can change and tweak them to your liking. If you don't like the kernel or find it's missing options, restore your boot partition in TWRP then flash another kernel.
EVERY user is different. Therre is no "best" kernel. Depending on your usage habits you might even tweak stuff like governor, hotplugs, and voltages. So in conclusion, try it and find out on your own!!!!

As stated before, dont post threads like this. As it doesnt matter what anyone else uses or how it works for them as each device is different and you may get different outcomes from using a kernel.
In the end, they them out and make up your own mind instead of allowing yourself to be told.

7.1.1 is not enough for someone who have used old chroma. Need help.

My phone went mad and downloaded 6.80gb stuff from online wasting my this month data package so i decided to update newest Chroma (about year old) to 7.1.1 stock rom + TWRP recovery + Franco kernel. As usually that felt like downgrade.
- Battery not shown as percentage
- Camera sound
- No dark/black theme
Many other issues cames too even i have used phone like 30min so i thought no point change settings more than that. I dont understand how hard can it be google to even try. I first time used android when it was something like 2.2.2 and still wondering same issues what i did then. I went from iPhone 2g to android and still miss what apple had by then and what android does not have even now but no can do.
I am not heavy user of my phone. I just want basic things to work. Is there some custom rom which is like chroma. I liked how chroma was like allmost stock rom but with couple of custom settings but its no longer continued so is there any rom which have taken it spot?

Wow, you went from a custom ROM to stock and you are missing features? Who would've guessed that?!?!
Sorry for the sarcasm lol. Flash literally any custom ROM and you should have those features. Most, if not all, N ROMs have Substratum/OMS which will allow for dark themes. Battery percentage should also be included in every ROM. Camera sound should be in most ROMs. As for me I'm still on Resurrection Remix M + xposed framework, which in my opinion has the most customization out of any possible Nexus 6 setup in the world.
I would suggest Pure Nexus to you which in my opinion is the closest to Chroma. But make a Nandroid backup and flash a few until you see what you like. Also checkout this YouTube channel which is amazing. @glockman4519 does awesome ROM overview videos if you want to get a feeler for something before flashing it.

Do you refer to the camera shutter sound? If yes, you can't remove the sound on latest stock camera app...

I go with pure Nexus. Thanks for tip. I dont understand most of custom roms which are allways full of bugs. I never understanded either why there is need for over 10 diffrent rom for one device. Developers should work together and there would be only couple of very good roms to choose from but i know its hard people to work together so aint gonna happen

Running Pure Nexus on my wife's Shamu and on my angler. You shouldn't be disappointed. Just as you, i like simple cosmetic tweaks, dark themes, and it does the job. :good:

Resurrection Remix, @Neo style is my current dd. Every customization you could ever want is in there, but there are many great ROMs. PN is one that if you came from Chroma, you'll like. Nitrogen is good, et al. Just read the threads and give them a shot

Sounds to me that you are going to like Pure Nexus since it has that Stock look and feel you want but with some extra and PN has extras.
The nice thing is you can pick and choose what features you want to run so you are in controle.
The rom does not come rooted because @BeansTown106 has decided that too many users are looking to pass the Safety Net Check for apps like Google Pay and some others that require your device be unaltered from stock. But if you want to run Substratum, you can either flash Chainfire's SuperSu sr3 v2.79 (or any systems suoerSu) or even flash Magisk Systems Root (I think it is up to v10 now) and that will allow for theming with Substratum.
That should get you pretty close, of not better than you g had with Chroma. PN is one of the most stable N roms out for the Nexus devices that I know. Another great rom would be SiX rom... But that is a whole nother story : )

I´ve been using Pure Nexus two days now. It seems usable but i dont know is it the 7.1.1 or the franco kernel or something like that but im having performance issues. Even clash of clans in own city does not work smoothly. Also camera shutter sound cannot be disabled. Otherwise i think all works as supposed to. When i installed rom i did clean install. I formated whole device including internal memory. Then i installed Pure nexus 7.1.1 + Full dynamic gapps + Franco newest kernel + Supersu
Anyone know whats the best kernel or do i just have to wait for updates on both rom and kernel?

The camera shutter sound can't be disabled with stock camera on 7.x Roms.
For performance issues, maybe try asking in The Rom/Kernel thread.

A combination you should test:
Crdroid rom, elementalx kernel, crystal tronik dark 12 substratum theme and latest beta nova launcher
gives me a lot of customizations, dark+blue look and good battery/performance
Works solid for me !

Hello. I just bought my brand new Oneplus 3T. I came from the LG G4. I always used custom roms on my android phones. Unfortunately I have a job now and I don't have much time to play/test all these roms around here.
I'm not asking "the best rom" or "which is better" sort of things.
I just need an opinion for what should I begin with?
I would prefer some stock based rom.
As about the kernel I heard a lot about Franco's kernel but I saw that there is Boeffla kernel too.
Don't get me wrong, I just need something to start from because as I mentioned above I don't have much time to test and choose which is best for me.

I have tested many ROM's and I always come to the same conclusion. Stock is better. I recommend you to use stock OOS, root it and mod it as you wish. It's a powerful OS, without much bloatware (which can anyways be easily removed) and it offers a decent amount of customization. Of course, it's not as customizable as RR, but RR is also unstable and doesn't offer the same camera quality. In fact, most ROMs have a crappy camera. Except PA, apparently, which, of course, has other problems, like idle battery drain. You'll find something that won't make you happy in every rom you try. That was, at least, my experience. I have come to the conclusion that OOS does its job well.

This is exactly what I want. I don't want a LineageOS based rom or something like this.
I want a STOCK based rom.
But I don't know with which rom should I start because I saw that there are a few.

Hmm, I'd say freedomOS. It's a very stable ROM, "daily driver" material. It gives you the option to kinda debloat it when you flash the ROM

If you are looking for maximum battery with average use then go for RR with EX Kernel.

Yeah Freedom OS is kind to install because you don't have to do the usual stuff manually, but I've personnaly not noticed anything you can't get on stock OOS.
I'd advice to stay stock, and if later you still want to try some new things there will be plenty of mod material here

If you want something else...try Phoenix AEX ROM..

This Rom has everything you want, for me absolut stable and has all features you need for normal use. Worth to have a look.
I always had custom Roms on my earlier phones, but this stock Rom is the best I have ever seen. I have unlocked bootloader and rootet phone but since I have my phone (since May) I flashed this Rom and there is no reason for me to change it:angel:

Don't feel like you need to flash a custom ROM, just because you "always have". Try the stock OOS for a bit, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Stock OOS is very impressive. Very little bloat, really close to stock Android, nice customization options, and it just works. It's a big departure from the manufacturer "skins" applied by LG, Samsung, etc. which often (in my opinion) make too many changes, with little added value.
Although, I would suggest unlocking the bootloader now (instead of waiting) even if you do intend to try out the stock ROM for a while. Sinceit is a bit annoying having your data wiped (by unlocking the bootloader - it can't be avoided) and having to setup everything again, if you do decide to install a custom ROM, kernels, etc.

Stick to OOS. It's the best, really. Sultanxda's lineage is amazing for starters.
And Franco kernel on OOS is also "legendary"
Nevertheless, it's upto you to try and tell yourself what rom/kernel suits your needs.

That's the mistake you use custom roms. I always have stock rom on my every device

Stock open beta 10 with custom kernel(optional to remove dm verity flag) + magisk + safety net pass + adway + google assistant + dark mode.... thats it !
