State of the Car Launcher, AA Redesign Concept, UI that works - Android Auto General

u/DeezNutterButters made this AA concept:
It looks like a marriage of CarPlay (dynamic sidebar, simplicity), and an evolved card interface of Android Auto, which — I think — under utilise the landscape screen ratio.
Factory launchers are uber-symplistic in its design approach, and with the utmost respect, fellow developers, are too tech-savvy to design a human-usable interface.
On-device Android Auto is designed to be run on smartphones, and the original Android Auto cannot be run without one, leaving car android users at the mercy of OEM and third party app developers that has yet to produce a truly usable launcher.
I have tested AutoMate, CarWebGuru, Agama, four different flavors of PX5 factory launchers over the last one year, without counting other launchers that I don't find fitting for my need. I have always gone back to Android Auto and CarPlay for its simplicity and stability.
Any other launcher that you think I should I try?
PS. Please forgive my ranty post.

[VIDEO PRODUCERS NEEDED!] What Is Your Perfect Teleprompter?

As a filmmaker, I shoot several different types of videos. One thing I have been trying to do is find a cost efficient teleprompter. With so many inexpensive tablets on the market, using an Android app seems like the most logical solution to this problem. I have tried several apps so far but none of them seem to fit my needs 100%.
I am not a developer, I am a filmmaker. I do however, have spoke to a developer interested in helping me solve my problem by creating a app from the ground up that is design exactly how I want it to be with the functionality that it needs. Before embarking on this task I would like to get some feedback from other video professionals and app developers alike on things ranging from currently available apps, things that are wrong with currently available apps & features that would be included in The Perfect Teleprompter App.
I expect that there will be a lot of responses that say there are options currently available and that the need for yet another teleprompter app does not exist. That being said, unless I find an app that has an interface that I like, the functionality that I need and the peripherals to make it even better, I will probably continue to pursue this project. THE PURPOSE OF THIS THREAD is to allow other filmmakers to provide their input and thoughts about what the perfect teleprompter app would be.
Features I currently have in mind (This list will change as I receive feedback. ):
Clean, Usable Interface
Dropbox and Google Drive Access
In App Editing
Speed Control during prompting
Text Size Options
Light & Dark themes
Movable Location Arrow (An arrow on the side of the screen that allows you to move it vertically to show the target location of the line being read.)
Bluetooth connection so your phone could be used as a remote.
Wired remote option
Mirror Mode
Scroll to any part of the script and start it rolling from that location
Free, fully functional version (No Ads)
Custom app branding (change splash screen to display your companies logo)
I want this thread to be a way for all of us to collaborate and make an app that we all enjoy using. It is a big project for me to take on and because of that, I feel it would be silly to keep it all to myself. Please post any suggestions, questions, idea or concerns. My goal for this project is to finally provide a teleprompter that does exactly what we need it to do as a producers. Thank you for the help and feedback and hopefully together we can get this app launched for everyone to use.
Thank you so much,

E-bike with Android Auto - Google Play Store review

Hi,
I'm working for one company that makes eletric bikes. Currently we have an app which is used as extended dashboard for the bike and to control your bike when you are not using it. Now we are thinking of extending some of our functionality and one of our feature request would be to use Android Auto within our bike infotainment. My question is whether something like this is 'legit' (Can such an application be approved by Google) ?
Or to be more precise, here is user story request: "As a company that manufacturers e-bike solutions, we want to build bike infotainment that supports Android Auto, so that riders can run all apps that have Android Auto support on e-bike infotainment."
Thank you
If your e-bike application does not have a hidden collection of user information and sending packages to third parties, then you will be moderated by Google in the Play Market. Read about such applications on the thematic sites that are dedicated to e-bikes.

‘Android Auto for Phone Screens’ improves support for Google Maps in landscape

Android Auto for Phone Screens was supposed to be a simple stop-gap leading up to the launch of Google Assistant’s Driving Mode, but with that feature still nowhere to be found, Google is making some improvements. This week, Android Auto for Phone Screens is being updated with improved Google Maps support.
As first spotted by the fine folks over at Android Police, Google has made some tweaks to how Google Maps appears on Android Auto for Phone Screens. The smaller of these changes comes from the information bars. Previously, Maps had these locked to the top of the display, but now they “float” over your active navigation. There’s also a speed limit icon now!
The bigger changes, though, come in the landscape view. As seen in the comparison below, Maps in landscape mode now shows more of the map itself, even if you’re viewing various settings for navigation.
Not too long after launching in cars, Google granted users the ability to run a version of the Android Auto UI on their phone display directly. With the arrival of Android Auto’s revamped UI, though, the company also announced it would kill off the phone screen version… only to backtrack on that a few weeks later with “Android Auto for Phone Screens.”
That’s important backstory to keep in mind for one simple fact — Google is now clearly giving attention and development resources to this “stop-gap” measure. Might that mean this product will stick around longer than we thought? It’s certainly the strongest evidence in favor of that.

Serious Debate Question: Run OpenAuto Pro on RasPi or LineageOS on RasPi as Car Head unit?

So I am stuck in a dilemma. Ive switched roms so many times I still don't know which way to go.
I want to us Android Auto. But I want to natively run my Uber/Lyft driver apps on the main screen. I dont want to involve the use of a typical phone or tablet. I have 2 Raspberry Pi's. An 8gb and a 2gb. I have a Sim7600G-H cell/gps module. I have 2 mcp2515 can modules on the spi bus.
I have 10" screen and a 4" screen.
Ah, but it gets better. I also have a number of arduinos in the equation too. These will control lights and servos. All custom programmed in python to operate over i2c.
I think im sticking with the Open Auto Pro method as my main screen. But i'm not sure. I love the car launcher apps that are available on android so they would look cool as the main screen too. Not sold on Kodi as a launcher option.
So I open the floor to debate. Android as a main app and run linux as secondary? Or run Open Auto Pro (linux) as main and android (LineageOS or OmniRom) as secondary?
same question in my head because of another reason:
I have a carplay-dongle and bought Pi4 to use it. I can use it with LineageOS or openauto pro. I tried with an android-tablet but had some problems and decided to do it with raspberry.
Both of them has similar functions:
Integrated music player
Display OBD-II data
Plugin CarPlay Autobox for OpenAuto Pro
Navigation with Android Auto™ head unit emulation
Multi-langugage support
Benefits of LineageOS:
is free and you will get free updates all time.
Your android-apk will also updated all time.
Android developed and optimised for light hardware. A PI4 4GB will a really good hardware-base.
Openauto Pro:
It is developed as a car head unit. User interface, community, supports... All of them for same purpose. If you have a specific problem like wheel-controller or power on-off etc... It is easier than only-android. You can run not only apk's, also linux packages.
You get free-updates only one year. You have to buy Carplay-Plugin separately. Maybe this plugin will not works next year with IOS-16. I don't know, if I get a free update or not.
Other issue of it cpu-memory usage: Debian-OS is developed for a Desktop-PC and a Pi4-4GB is a thin hardware for this os.
My Wish-List:
DAB-Radio support
TSR (Traffic sign recognisition)
Lane Assistant
Both system does not have a built in solution for FM-Radio, TSR or Lane Assistent. But you can use Android-Apps on both systems.
I will try first with LineageOS and maybe some android-apps too. If it is not enought, I can buy Openauto and use bought apps on it too.

Android Auto Stereo Suggestion Request

Recently I installed a double DIN Android 11 unit I picked up off Amazon. However, after a few days trying to get a feel for it, I’ll be returning it due to a laundry-list of reasons. Before attempting another model, I’d like to ask this community for their suggestions for a double DIN Android Auto Stereo.
Must-Have Features:
Physical volume knob. Physical "home" & "back" buttons are preferred, but not a deal-breaker.
Automatic screen dimming/brightening for ambient light levels.
Android Auto
Steering wheel control support
Backup Camera support
Budget: Up to $350 USD.

From the list of Google sanctioned stereos, what are you considering?
Or were you meaning generic chinese origin kanged android with unreliable pseudo/android auto.

Great list! I had no idea there was an official sanctioned list. Thanks for this. I had been swimming through all sorts of Chinese "android auto" clones, and getting frustrated with claimed compatibility which was totally bogus. I'll look into this list and see if I can isolate my selection a bit more.
