Moto X 2014 Pure - Still have to unlock?
I am very new to the Android world. Just came over from years of iPhone. I've searched all around but haven't found the exact answer. I purchased the Moto X 2nd Edition Pure version. I'm on ATT. I'm trying to root my phone. Is the pure version already unlocked (I thought it was) or do I still need to go through the unlocking process?

You need to unlock the bootloader. Your phone is already sim unlocked, but that's a different thing. I hope that answers your question
Also, welcome to Android . I'm curious, what made you switch?

Ok, that explains a lot and makes perfect sense. Thank you.
I decided to move to Android because of a few reasons. I was impressed at many of the features, especially the Moto X I got. I also just wanted to play with all the different toys of another platform to be honest. I still have my iPad for anything iOS I want to do, and my Moto X for my daily use stuff. I'm already fairly fully committed to Google so all my stuff is there, and the integration of the Google services into Android made everything super simple.
I'm loving the experience so far.

I am glad your experience is going well.
I am always interested to see why iOS users switch to Android. I come across and work with iOS users who always bash Android, and their reasons are unjustifiable. it's good to read some iOS users' experience with Android, like you :good:
First, thanks a lot. I was able to recover my stock recovery on XT1097 (Brazilian Pure Edition Version) with no problems at all
Second: Is there a possibility to adapt Philz or TWRP to our device??
I'm waiting too for a version of Philz Recovery

I made the switch last year too, namely so that I had a better experience with Google Glass. I love it and won't be going back. Just so you know, your service provider is AT&T, as is mine, but your Pure Edition phone take the T-Mo updates, not AT&T when they are available, so don't get confused. I rooted and totally enjoy it, although it's a little scary doing all this ADB stuff, I had to break out an old Windows computer as not much is written or explained for Mac, lol. But everyone I've encountered is really helpful.
I'm debating rooting again do it now or wait for Lollipo, I want to unlock the bootloader, but don't want to lose my personalized bootscreen in exchange for the ugly bootloader warning screen. Don't know how to save it so I can put it back, lol. Welcome to Android, enjoy the freedom.
Did anyone tried to root on XT1097? Did you guys used the Pure version ? (XT1092)

I want to confirm before start that we can use the updated tool to upgrade to 5.0 even if we are on a rooted version of 4.4.4 with an unlocked bootloader?
Can anyone confirm success? Is there data loss?
Thanks

I couldn't the script to run any commands even though adb devices was recognizing my moto x. Just did it manually. Don't forgot to put "fastboot oem lock begin" before flashing anything and "fastboot oem lock" after the final file....(i noticed these commands are not in the script)
titanium backup not working
Anyone having issues with titanium backup and not having su access even though it does?
I've got adaway installed and working, not sure why TB isn't working. Tried installing busy box and SU to various locations.
Multi-Tool Error
Hey guys, I used the multi-tool to downgrade from the first 5.0 to 4.4.4, worked fine. Now when I select option 6 to flash 5.0 OTA i get the error "device not found" did I miss something?
RUNME.BAT
Just downloaded v4.1 from the main mirror but there is no RUNME.bat. Does anybody know if there are special instructions to run the updated version?
I own an XT1097 with lollipop. I unlocked boot loader then used Moto x 2014 Tool to flash stock unroot and then I flashed radio from Brazilian firmware to get signal back. If you want I can make a tuto 4 u.

To flash 5.0 OTA ZIP you must first run option 4 or 5.

So is this confirmed, as I asked in another thread and was told the update would come from Motorola, not TMO. Given that the software on the phone is ID'd as TMO, it makes sense. I was surprised, though, given the label "Pure Edition," that the software isn't generic. But I'm guessing it only refers to the unlocked SIM and lack of carrier bloat (?).

Hello,
I'm getting a replacement Moto X Develper Edition from Motorola, and I'd like to be able to clone the old phone to the extent possible. I have TWRP installed, but it's not clear to me that backing up through that will catch everything. I also have Titanium Backup, and motorola tools on my PC as well as the adt windows bundle as of july. Is it as simple as unlocking the bootloader on the Motorola site, installing TWRP and restoring a backup from the current phone? Thanks for your help.
One of the features I thought was really good about 5.0 was when setting up a new device or after a factory reset, one had the option to restore from another device from a Google Cloud based image. One could also choose which apps to reload as well.
I thought that this was great. I wanted to try it when I received my new Moto X 2014. When I received my Moto X, I updated to 5.0, rebooted, then did a factory reset before booting back to the new device. Upon reboot, I was greeted with the 5.0 startup screen. I went through the process, skipping Tap n Go. Then it came to sign into your Google account. After signing in, I did not get the page with the option to setup from a previous device. Instead, I get the Moto Migrate app.
I factory reset several times to ensure that I hadn't missed anything. I always got the Moto Migrate app, rather than the 5.0, restore from a previous device screen.
My question, did Moto Migrate take the place of being able to restore from a cloud based image of a previous device?? I really liked the idea of images being stored in the cloud and being able to restore from them after a factory reset. This seemed that it would really take the pain out of a factory reset. What gives? Did I miss something?

I have the same exact issue. What did you end up having to do to fix this? It seems everyone stopped posting on this issue.
That is what happened to me too when I got the phone. I think Motorola is using the Moto Migrate in place of Google's system which is a shame as you need to physically have the other device with Moto's system. You could always try using a 3rd party app for backup and restores like Helium. They aren't the best or easiest but they can be better than nothing.
Yup for me the same, restoring original fw and doing factory reset no window told me to restore from an other device. Such of info appear with custom rom where moto apps are not installed
Hi,
Helium Backup desktop app on my Mac acknowleges my device but the Moto X Pure (non rooted) does not seem to acknowledge it. It seems to be a know issue on Moto devices (problem with ADB on the moto side?):

Unsupported and Problematic Devices.
Any Motorola device - Helium is NOT available to Motorola devices. This is because Motorola phones have a bug that break Android's backup mechanism. Until this is fixed by Motorola, Helium will not work on those Androids. You can download Helium manually here: http://download.clockworkmod.com/apks/Backup.apk If you find that Helium does work on your Motorola Android, please notify me.
Moto MDM is no longer up to date and does not work. Has anyone been able to find a work around?
I used helium to backup my g4 and restore to my moto x pure. I had to change to ptp mode for a sec if I remember correctly. Using a PC though
I have three moto x4's that can't be rooted. I need to record telephone conversations for my work so I have to keep them on Android 8. I keep getting notices almost twice a day to upgrade to Android 9, and while I can choose "later" it is getting annoying and starting to interfere with my use of the phones.
I tried turning off notices for google play but that did not stop the notices.
Does anyone know of a way to prevent the notices from appearing?
I've since switched to a custom ROM, but I disabled the Moto update service when I was running stock Oreo and that stopped the notifications for me. Now, I did this on a rooted x4 using Titanium Backup rather than from the Settings app, but it's worth a shot.

cannot root because bootloader cannot be unlocked. cannot disable moto update service because it is greyed out
Here is a question:
Are these X4 branded or unlocked/open market?
I successfully unlocked bootloader on mine even after updated to 9
You need Linux with adb instead of Windows
Mac may do it too
The phones have locked bootloaders because they were amazon version.
Is there an anti-virus program that would at least prevent the update from downloading or installing unless I specifically allow it?
