Hey XDA, I've got a question about phone software updates that maybe someone could enlighten me on:
What determines when a particular phone will get an update? I guess I'm not entirely clear on how updates are rolled out.
For example: I have a Note 9 that I bought refurbished. It was originally running the AT&T version before I flashed the unlocked firmware. I currently use the note 9 with unlocked firmware (no carrier specific bloat, just samsung and facebook stuff) on the TMobile network.
Since I've started using the phone I've always been about a month or more behind on the latest updates. Currently I am on the December 1st 2018 Security update and I have been patiently waiting for the Pie update. Who/what determines when I will get this update? Is it Tmobile, At&t or samsung
OS Update releases are dependent on when the device manufacturer would release them in what country.
Being unlocked currently, you are waiting with the rest of us to get the update after the other 4 carriers have released it. Right now we are all waiting on TMO, once they have released we should not be far behind.
They do this to make sure there won't be any issues regardless of the carrier you are on. Sucks, I know.

Is is possible to have a stuck rom that let's me get updated direct from samsung instead of from my carrier which likely won't push security updates.

From what I understand, if you have a US model snapdragon note 8, any US SD version can be flashed. Example , you have a Verizon note 8, you can flash the unlocked US note 8 software on it and be good to go.
Keep in mind , some things may or may not work, like visual voice mail or Wi-Fi calling.

I live in Canada. I just want Samsung updates from samsung. I just don't want to wait for a carrier to take tier time and push the update late on hopes I might buy a new phone or something.
Hi guys. Havent seen this yet so I want to start it. I'm on the beta for pie. It's been really stable. Has anyone else been part of the testing and if so have you gotten the official update. Who will be pushing it to us as I dont use a normal carrier and my carrier does not sell note 9. I could use a different firmware but I'm enjoying not seeing all the carrier stuff

If you mean the Note 9 purchased from Samsung itself, no no updates have been pushed yet.
FYI, Samsung unlocked devices are usually the last ones to get updates. They claim they need to test it with every carrier.
I have gotten from Samsung a S8+, Note 8, S9+ and a Note 9... All experienced the same update delay.
There's a 428 page thread dedicated to the Pie beta and leaked builds.
When the official Pie for the unlocked model is released, you'll get it via OTA since you're on the official beta.
I currently have the Verizon S10 and get regular updates and feel like Verizon/Samsung are very on top of keeping it up to date. I have a friend who is also on Verizon, but wants to buy the factory unlocked (G973U1) version. I didn't know how up to date the factory unlocked version was (is it staying updated regularly?), but I know Samsung seems to be giving less attention to their factory unlocked models than their carrier models... or am I wrong in that? Thoughts? Thanks
Yes, the unlocked models are staying up to date. Sometimes they even get updated before carrier updates.

Through three iterations of Samsung phones I've owned, I've never had, seen, or heard of an unlocked phone getting a major update before the carrier model.
It happened last month or the month before with the security patch update. The U1 models got the update before the U models from what I read from people who have U1 phones.

I meant more like the version updates. Security updates are many times pushed to unlocked phones earlier but it didn't happen with Android 8, 9, or 10 upgrades. I was thinking the OP meant System updates but they may have meant security uodates.
I know in the past, before the S10, Samsung was pretty terrible about getting software updates to the unlocked versions. Taking several months longer, than the carrier versions.
So how did Samsung do with getting unlocked software updates on the S10? I'm curious to know before I decide which Galaxy S20 I preorder.
I have a Verizon S10 and I was quite pleased with the promptness of the software updates. I'm impressed we even got Android 10.
I was in the beta and my unlocked was a couple of weeks at least behind the beta people with locked phones when the final came out.
Same question here. I was looking at firmware listings on sammobile and it seems that at least for the latest firmware ...CTA3 U1 versions are dated 02-03-2020, whereas for U model only T-Mobile has CTA3 and is dated later 02-09-2020. Would love to hear from someone with unlocked model about their update experience. I've stopped buying unlocked precisely for these update delays, but would love to loose T-Mobile crap and silly 4/5g LTE icons if Samsung has gotten their act together.

I'm running an unlocked S10e on T-Mobile. Got the February security update on 4Feb. Wife's S10e we got directly from T-Mobile, it still hasn't had the Feb update pushed.
While those of us wiih unlocked phones were more than a week behind everyone else getting out of beta on Android 10, we received the February patch before some locked phones. It would be unusual for Samsung to push anything out to the unlocks early but they did on the last patch.
Has anyone got this update yet? Is there somewhere to download it?
I wouldn't expect an update for a while. Look at the most recent one, it came out in December and they skipped November.
If you want fast OS updates get a pixel phone because canadian carriers are notoriously slow
