Hi guys, I am about to purchase my galaxy note next week and I was wondering if anyone could shed some light into the matter..
Which class of micro sd card should I buy? (minimum) I was hoping to get a 64gb but if that would underperform, there would not be much of a sense to it.
The maximum reading/writing I will be doing in the note is probably playing 1080p playback + mirroring it to the tv. maybe some hi definition video recording as well straight to the memory card.. but most often than not, I would play a 720p mkv movie.
Would a class 4 suffice? Any suggestions on which brands I should look at / stay away from?
Class 4 of any decent brand should suffice.
Class 2 cards from Sandisk will also suffice (their read/write speeds are enough for 1080p encoding and decoding). May be a hassle if you regularly transfer a lot of data to and from the card since thats the time when the slower R/W speeds will come into play.
Why get anything less than class 10? If you can afford a Note, you should be able to spare another $20 for a fast sdcard...
class 10 cards can cost upwards of $80 for an 8gig card.

i picked up my class 10 a-ram 32gb microsd for $49.95AU + shipping.
it really depends on what you plan to use your note for. if youre filming 1080p video at the default 17mbps, thats about 2mb/s that you'd want minimum for just filming. so any speed should be fine as long as its above class 2. i just prefer faster cards since theyre getting cheaper.

I've read class 10 doesn't always mean fastest read speed or something to that effect. Not always beneficial to get a class 10 since it writes faster but doesn't always means it reads faster. Someone else can probably elaborate for me.

A-RAM is the brand. i bench'd it. write speeds are 11mb/s, read speeds are 14mb/s.
it was one of the random daily specials they had at www.shoppingsquare.com.au a week or so ago.
right now, the next best deal they have is http://www.shoppingsquare.com.au/p_276323_Kingston_32GB_Class_10_Micro_SDHC_Memory_Card

normally read speeds of class 10 are still higher than write speeds. but the read speeds dont really vary much between classes. my kingston class 10 reads at 12mb/s, my a-ram class 10 reads at 14mb/s, my sandisk class 2 reads at 10mb/s. so if all you need is read speed, then any card will do.
even class 2 or 4 on Sandisk it will work fine. i believe just buy a good make one ( not a fake from China ) , but i bought mine Lexar class 10 and work great , i couldnt be happier.

It doesn't necessarily write faster either!
All the class indicates is the minimum sustained write speed under optimal (i.e. unfragmented) conditions. It says nothing about the read speed, which is what is generally important in mobile devices since they are usually used for content consumption rather than creation.
As NZtechfreak has already mentioned, Sandisk Class 2 cards almost always well exceed the class minimums - I've been using 16gb Sandisk Class 2 cards in my phones for a long time now, and I've yet to get one that had a write speed less than the Class 6 minimum of 6MB/s, and the read speed has always been 20MB/s or above.

Dave
A good read why Class 4 cards are the best ones to use for your smartphone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14456360&postcount=42
I started out with a Kingston Class 2 32GB I had laying around, and then switched to a Class 10 32GB made by PNY that I got from Microcenter for $59.95.
There was a very noticeable difference in photo taking lag and the media scanner, plus app access on the card. Now there is almost no photo lag, from snap to saving. Haven't messed with the video much yet...
I've Samsung class 10 32 gb. It's really good, but my device started rebooting because of it. "System Process has stopped working."
What I found out is that after removing my micro sd my device is a hell FASTER than before!!!
Maybe a faulty micro sd, no since it works fine in my pc and other devices.
I want to check does any of you have the same problem???
Sorry but your data is at least a year old

Hi, I am debating on which microSD card I should purchase for the Xperia Z1. These are the two products I am looking at currently:
Sandisk Extreme PLUS microSDXC UHS-I (SDSDQX-064G) (Red/Gold)
Capacity: 64GB
Read Speed: Up to 80MB/s
Write Speed: Up to 50MB/s
$70.54CAD (Regular: $199.99CAD)
SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I (SDSDQX-064G) (Red/Grey)
Capacity: 64GB
Read Speed: N/A
Write Speed: N/A
Transfer Speed: Up to 30MB/s
$59.99CAD (Regular: $69.99CAD)
I would prefer the higher performance card but I am not sure if the Xperia Z1 can benefit with that extra speed.
I am planning to use the microSD card for storing 1080p movies, flac and apps.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thank you very much
With the Sandisk I had bad experience, I use Samsung Ultra-Pro 64GB SDXC, Write Speed 20mb/s Read Speed 70mb/s and I got no problem at all, is damn fast. And chipper than Sandisk. I will recommended also A-Data, very good, but hard to find. Anyway in any case you will not see the difference.

What kind of bad experience are you referring to?
See, in terms of write speed and read speed, I have heard that smartphones cannot benefit from anything above 30MB/s, I have not been able to find solid proof however. I will be playing a lot of large mkv videos, so I am hoping there wwill not be any stutter.

Losing data or corrupted, and after few weeks the sd stopped working and I had to replace the sd. The second one was working good but the access to the card was laggy, so I sell the SD. Was a year ago and maybe, I said Maybe, the newest sandisk are better but I got 3 Samsung and they working like a sharm.

All new smartphones are implemented to working with SDXC so faster the SD will be, it will just guarantee the best work. There is not any proof but the hardware are made to support all the new technology so probably they have higher bandwidth.
Ultra speeds are not that great, my class 8GB class 4 is almost as fast as the ultra in this phone. My old 16GB class 10 is faster than the ultra (was more expensive also when it was purcahsed) You get what you pay for I think.
I have a 8GB Sandisk card class 4, 16GB class 10 Sandisk card, then the 32GB ultra card (now sold) 64GB Extreme due to arrive.
I have a sandisk extreme that should arrive today or tomorrow, will post to advise.
The reason I purchased the extreme was that another user posted 40MB/s write using this card in the Sony Z1, I will confirm later.

SDXC is not the issue, it is more that we need android to support UHS Speed Class 1 until then we will be constrained to get the full performance out of the memory cards

Who said the SDXC is the issue here, the cards was faulty. Also I was saying about hardware, software is good enough. You can buy best card ever and will be no difference on smartphone to see with your eyes. I did a bandwidth test with SCSI app and what I paid I get. Do you think we need write speed 40mb/s for smartphones, Where?
We need read speed, so any app or vid will not be stutter or laggy. You spending money for a card with highest writing speed just for nothing. This is my advice.

You said SDXC is faster, when it is not, read what I was quoting from you I was just highlighting the performance issues is if the hardware can support the new UHS-1 format to get full speed.
potentially 4k video, raw camera recording, and uploading large files to the phone, just a few from the top of my head.

Format SDXC in FAT32 and test the speeds, the SDXC is faster because of his exFAT system is more efficient. All new devices support now exFAT which is faster than FAT32. I had SDXC 64GB on my old device which was not supporting SDXC and with FAT32 was, sorry, is working fine, but slower. I did my tests.

Look, I said this in another thread, the 4K is useless so high writing speed either. When we will see on the market 128Gb of microSD we will talk about this seriously. Now is just a wast of time. Z1 was never meant to record 4K even if it can with some tricks but he still support UHS-1 format.

Don't touch the ultra if you are after performance and future proof yourself.
see attached, brand new 64GB Sandisk Extreme.
You can clearly see here the bottle neck with the phone, almost everything at least twice as fast with my USB3 UDMA card reader vs the phone interface from the computer
Sandisk Ultra in phone best 40MB/s average around 30MB/s read but around 10-12MB/s write.

I'm using the Samsung Pro 64gb SDXC UHS-1 as well. This card is very fast and good price as well. I bought it on Ebay for about 65 AUD. I've tested on the GS4 & my XZ1 as well the speed is awesome... But you should be aware of fake cards goin' on at Ebay. It is very important where the card is coming from. The other day I bought another card for my brother in law, on the package it said made in Korea, but on the card itself made in Taiwan was printed on and guess what... The speed ain't the same!!!
Before you buy the card, ask the seller specifically if; "made in Korea" is printed on the card itself.
I tested with a few sd tester here are the results:
Made in Korea W 18mb/ R 42mb
Made in Taiwan W 9mb/ R 16mb
I've uploaded 2 pictures the one on top is FAKE from Taiwan!!! So now I've to return it to the seller and ask for a refund...

I see, to get that scores with Extreme Sandisk and reach 90mb/s you have to have USB 3.0 on your computer and any device to test the card have to be implemented with USB 3.0 if not all your test will stack al 35mb/s in reading and writing.
Anyway that Sandisk Extreme is very impressive but I told you, the Android and the hardware on Z1 support that kind of card but they are not made to reach that speed. What for? You will still not have problems what so ever.
PS: which kind of Benchmark App did you use to test the card, I want try with mine and post some results.
I'm using Sandisk Ultra 64GB, no issues and works nice, I use it to store some music, video and save my pictures / recordings.
So we are stack on 42mb/s for external memory bandwidth. That's ok. If you see we have 70mb/s in internal memory. Wath we can do? Nothing, we have to keep Z1 like that. It was meant to be.
Same here corrupted sd card experience using sandisk...
Now Im using transcend for 6 months, very reliable, no problem at all.

I always knew that I would not get full speed out of the card due to the android interface, this has been my biggest annoyance for a long time, but three times the speed in phone to copy movies, mp3s, flac... will definately give me benefit, titanium backup now flies.
I labelled most of the files so if you look down the bottom you will see what picture is what.

Been using this one for quite some time and it's been superb, never had to reformat due to it being glitchy or corrupting anything.

Had it since the S3 and was actually used as the internal memory as i switched the memories around, it was then used in the Asus Prime and then the Galaxy Camera and finally it's now in my Z1 and i'm using folder mount (which is excellent by the way) formatted into Fat32, 4096 byte allocation size i think.

The method in which the OS is accessing the micro sd cards, not compliant to UHS-1 as well as the bridge between the USB interface
Yeah I was also looking at the Samsung chips, they were looking quite good, the sandisk for me was on special and ended up a very similar price
That why I was telling to do not spend money for super pro ultra extreme ultimate Sd cards, is not needed. But if the price is low probably is worth to buy.

Hello guyz,
Can you please recommend me the best microSD card for our phone in 128GB or 256GB?
I am leaning towards Samsung Pro Plus 128GB or EVO Plus 256GB. Should I go for speed or size?
Also there is Sandisk Extreme with similar speeds and Lexar Professional with read speeds @ 150mb/s, but I'm note sure if these speeds are overkill for a Note8..
I would also like to know cause eBay has so many fake ones.
I honestly have had issues with every sdhc I've used except for the EVO's. I don't know about other Samsung classes but I personally would stick with genuine Samsung memory cards.

I've been using the 256GB EVO that Samsung was giving out for the Note7 promo. Been working great.
I lost my $32 for useless SD card
I wouldn't worry too much about speed, as you can install apps on the SD card (correct me if I'm wrong). I would go for size over speed.
Never had issues with the Samsung or Sandisk memory cards for mobile devices, I have used everything from 2gb cards to 256gb cards and I will be looking at the 400gb card as soon as Sandisk gets it to retailers.
Samsung EVO Plus Grade 3, Class 10 128GB MicroSDXC thats one i have in my Note8 and as i don't shot lot of 4k videos that speed is enough
400gb for the win chuck
sandisk 400gb. Note8 ready. get it ONLY from "ships and sold by amazon". never 3rd party.

Fastest is probably:
Lexar Professional 1000x microSDXC (up to 256GB)
Biggest size is probably:
SanDisk Ultra 400GB microSDXC UHS-I
Best price/size/performance? Probably Samsung Evo+ line of cards, based on the following (it's a guess, I have not benchmarked them myself):
https://www.pidramble.com/wiki/benchmarks/microsd-cards
Do not rely on only the manufacturers' ratings, they can be way off and sometimes read is fast, but write is slow (or vice versa). The most expensive is not always the fastest either. Further, some excel in big sequantial reads, others are a tad better in random read/write IOPS. Even further, Note8 card interface probably is NOT able to use the maximum speed out of the latest UHS-II cards.
And yes, do NOT buy on eBay, unless you are willing to gamble or really know what you are doing.
My experience with SanDisk
Hi,
I just bough an Sandisk microSdhc Extreme 128 GB, Class 10, U3 UHS-2.
I emailed Samsung about my Note 8 and they told me that it supports UHS-2 cards.
When running tests on phone I get MAX 60write 60read
Only on DiskSeed Test App I got 287 MB/S read and 37 MB/S write.
Any input?
I've had my 64gb SD card in my s5 before putting it in my note 8. I might be lucky, but I figured Samsung cards work best in Samsung devices, idk. But yeah, it's been about 3 years and the SD card is going strong.
Andddddd...itll probably break after this post.
Galaxy Note 8 has many options for microSD Card for it. Here I found much different Note 8 Memory Card.
Never had an issue with any Sandisk microSDCard. I have had a bunch of them and they all work fine.
I'm another using the Samsung 256 EVO that came with the Note 7 promo. It also worked fine in an S7Edge for a while before I got the Note 8.

Anyone know where to get this one at a better deal? When it comes to device storage I'm not as much concerned with speed as I am with size and having 400GB at your fingertips, on the go, is just pretty freakin' awesome.
Btw...for those looking for more speed, I happened to catch this video on YouTube the other day that explains what the different speed markings on the sd cards actually mean if anyone's interested. I found it to be fairly informative.
Hello,
has anyone been able to figure what the sdcard ratings are on this?
is it UHS ii?
can anyone post their write speeds?( people with sd cards anything under UHS i/ v30 please dont bother posting)
edit:
Also, to unify results can everyone use Androbench app?
And be sure to go to settings and point your ext sd card.
thanks
ain't anyone interested/curious in how fast their transfer rate to their sd card is? gues because it has nothing to do with facebook or antisocial media then it doesn't count as being a real thing...
if you have Solid Explorer you can visually see your transfer speed.
transferring the same file across different phones / SD cards can give you a comparison.
i believe the bottleneck is the SD card, as the phone is capable of transferring at speeds far beyond what the SD card is capable of. so even if the Note 9 can transfer faster than the other phones, the SD card will limit it to a fraction of its capable speed.
check Notebookcheck.net
Also most of the phone is stuck at <100MB/s for SDcard transfer rate atm. I don't know why but, maybe to prevent heat generated.
You can get an UHS-II TypeC card reader ya know. or get 512GB for full UFS 2.1 speed.

No not really. Different files and sizes transfer at different speeds. Also, you're basically stuck with whatever speeds you get as there are very few ways to 'optimize' or 'tweak' performance of a SD card. And besides most people are still buying MP3s. Why? I don't know. Ain't anyone interested in listening to CD quality music? Myself, I still buy compact discs and rip them into FLACs and MP3s when I get it then the CD mostly collects dust.
And some of us are waiting on 512GB cards from Samsung and SanDisk to come out. No point in buying a 400GB card when I know I will get the 512 when the price comes down.
all this is fine and dandy but i was expecting actual file transfer read and write data numbers.
none provided their current rates. all other info is irrelevant.
thanks
I'd be interested to know the slot speed rating as well. Currently the phone defaults to using the internal capacity to write to for things like high-end video recording, due to the external SD not being fast enough.
...But is that actually due to the slot speed not being fast enough? Or because the vast majority of users will use standard SD Cards, which aren't fast enough to keep-up and it would cause complaints. Would be nice to find out it's the latter, I wouldn't mind investing in a faster SD Card for a little boost in performance.
Although I don't know the specifics for the Note 9. The SD card reading hardware on the device is the bottleneck and a source of where all manufactures go cheap. The read and right will top out between 60MB/s to 70 MB/s. This is why the internal storage is preferred but I the device for use and the main thing people overlook when it comes to devices with expandable memory. Expandable storage is simply meant for storage and not for high quality video recording and bust, super slow-mo, and other high quality video and image writing.

4k video takes about 100- 150Mbs on a high end camera. That's about 18 MB/sec write speed. All the medium/high quality sd cards can do those speeds...

Yes, but most cards don't reach their advertised potential and multiple simultanious writes impact speeds a lot more. This is why there are 512GB devices and why they still sell. The average person won't max out the capability of the SD slot but you always get a few that will use the device well beyond what most of us will.
I'm getting read 73.41mb/s Write 31.85mb/s with the 256gb card that came free with the note 7. Also note, I only have about 47gb free on it so that may affect the results.

2nd test 71.35 read & 37 write

I use a Samsung EVO Plus 128GB card. 68MB/s sustained read and 62MB/s sustained write, using a 28GB 4k Blu-Ray rip. The card can read 100MB/s and write 90MB/s but those speeds are only close to achievable when plugged into my USB 3 card reader.
It's rated at 100 gigawatts.

68MB/s sustained read and 62MB/s sustained write
in the note 9?
Also, to unify results can everyone use Androbench app?
be sure to go to settings and point your ext sd card.
thanks

Yes, but it is a large file. Read and write speeds tend to start off a bit better and should be a bit better for smaller files.

no problem, tests are encouraging. i have the evo plus 256gb and and on the note 8 was getting barely 10 MB/s write speeds.
on the computer was getting the advertised speeds on an UHS 3 reader.
Samsung EVO+ 256GB UHS-I microSDXC U3 (exact same as aznmode above).
Using the AndroBench app:
1st Run:
Read: 76.1mb/s
Write: 31.01mb/s
2nd Run:
Read: 77.24mb/s
Write: 29.56mb/s
As a reference, the internal memory bench is:
Read: 747.8mb/s
Write: 189.0mb/s
Does anyone use a SD card with this tablet? I've bought a few different SanDisk ones and have been disappointed with the write speeds which is most important to me.
I understand that you'll never be able to achieve the advertised speeds, but no matter what card I use the write speed is always capped at 20MB/s.
When I looked at the Amazon reviews of these cards people were complaining they weren't getting the full write speed, but the lowest speeds reported were at least 50MB/s, not 20MB/s.
I've looked online and since there is little information about this model I haven't been able to find any others who could confirm that this tablets SD write speed is capped at 20MB/s. If so then there would be no reason to waste any more money on SD cards.

The SD card speed is limited by the bus speed of the tablet. Buying high speed cards to use in it is a waste of money.

Yes I came to this conclusion, just wondering if anyone here knows what the actual bus speed is for the SM-X200 to use as a frame of reference

I believe it is a USB 2 bus bit I'm not certain. You have to realize that this is a budget priced tablet and isn't going to have the performance of top-of-the-line ones.
