128 vs 512 - Samsung Galaxy S10 Questions & Answers

gonna pre order s10+, trying to decide if it worth it to get the 512 gb ram model for +$250
I know I can buy the microsd card for 512gb, which is a lot of cheaper, but i heard it a real pain to manage and move apps back and forth.
Can you record videos directly to the sdcard? Is there any real disadvantage to just getting the 128 and buying a 512 sdcard?

Read/Write operations executed from portable storage will generally fail to compare to UFS/NVME. Onboard storage is on a completely different level. What's more, we don't know how fast the SD card reader is yet. Notebookcheck normally runs IO benchmarks.

I usually don't need much storage and I go for lower 128GB model, but if I need more storage later, than I can buy a fast SD Card and enjoy added storage. Added storage in my case would only be used for multimedia consumption such as mp3, photos and videos. If you buy a nice SD Card, then you can record 4k videos on it as it would be pretty fast.
If I would go for 512GB model, but not use it down the read, then it means I have wasted $250 for nothing.

I wish there was a 512 ram version lol

I just record everything onto the onboard storage and just transfer to Micro SD after. No issues there for me.

Maximum storage card capacity

Hi,
I want to buy a micro SD : I have seen that the maximum storage for micro sd was of 16 GB.
Someone has already tested a 32 GB storage card?
If yes, Does it work correctly?
Thanks for your answer.
it's works i don't now how becouse i just test my friends card.
Sorry for my English
Maybe it's was on android 1.6 (max 16), but 2.1 should be supported with 32GB
well, i got my X8 only a week ago, it's my first smartphone.
seriously, what do you guys want to store with 32GB card?
i can't imagine what to store in such space, i figure one could make a portable toilet out of it and still got some more space.
Movies (avi, wmv, etc). HD photos from professional photocameras, hi fi music like wav. Download a lot of stuff with torrent client and else. 32 GB really need for me.

Question was not what I do with all that storage.
Is it possible to have 32GB card in X8 I think that it support up to 16GB ??
I couldn't tell you, because I've bought an 16GB card (class10).
With the price of a 32 GB microSD, I could not fool me.
I think that 32GB is more money then the Phone
You are able to mount 32GB card I've just checked it out but the results are horrible - 500 MB of freshly copied music on the card, and now it is showed as "damaged" on the notification bar. I wouldn't recommend it to you.

I think the X8 will also work extrem slow with a sd card of 16 or 32gb
And with 32Gb class10? The read/write speed is biggest?
I believe that is not a question of card's speed, but more of device's ability to comprehend such a huge space. Just like with enormous hard drives in older computers.
ok.. maybe this out of topic..
what brand of SD card with class 6 or 10??
n where to buy??
im just unable to find it in my country.
in my opinion, 32gb can be handle with very well if this SD card are good.
i mean good SDHC
i found it in my country, designed for camcorder and etc..
but price also different
i just want 8gb with class 10..
currently i have 8gb, no class
my quadrant almost same with droid x, so i think if i have good SD card i can overlap droid x.
where to buy???
32 gb for a phone is a lot of capacity
Im using 32gb sandisk class 2 memory card in my galaxy s initially when it was 2.1 it was slow. But now after 2.2 update its okay. Only startup and shut down process Will take long time. class doesn't matter on phone it matters only when data is to be transferred from pc to phone . Max transfer speed Will be 2mbps in class 2.

there's a lot of good brand to choose actually, personally i'm using transcend.
what city are you in? in Bandung, you can try BEC. i bought mine from kaskus though, it has almost everything we look for
class.. hmm IMO it's unnecessary to use such a high class card. class 6 (6MB/s) is sufficient enough, because android apps are usually not really big, only 10-12 MB at most so no need for such a large data transfer rate.
Has anyone had good success with the 32Gb card? I dont want to buy one if it's just gonna not work properly.
thanks
Won't work
Chances are, it wouldn't work.
The Xperia X8 currently only supports up to 16GB of memory. If you go higher than that you would experience problems. You might be able to make it work for a few minutes then it might not be able to read the mem card.
Hopefully, in future updates we could use 32GB cards.
I've searched around, no walk-arounds on this yet. If I were you, I'd stick with 16GB. That's a lot of storage!

How much memory is taken by Touch Wiz?

For those of you who already have it in your hands, how much memory all the crap from Samsung takes? I am deciding whether to buy the 16 gig version or wait for 32 GB version.
Why spend the extra $$$ on the 32? Just get a microSD card. It allows up to 128 Gigs. It's the cheaper way out. You get more for your money.

That's the reason
Profit margin is huge for that additional 16GB but at least it is 16gb all freed up. Personally, I'd like to see a mSATA drive put in one.
I bought the 16gb from Amazon got it yesterday. After clicking the window on screen and it installed all the FREE goodies. I had 9gb left. I then installed basically nothing and had 7gb left.
You can go to APP and it shows "install to SD-Card" Yet lets say the program is 700mb and the app is 11. Lol it puts the APP on the sd-card yet leaves the 700mb file on storage (tablet). A tad backwards
So I sent it back and got the 32gb from BestBuy.

64 gb for sure. Don't even hesitate. [emoji4]
With no support for external sd cards always get the largest available space you can afford.
64gb.. it is too plenty...
Depends on what you will store on it. I have had my device now for a few months and still have 16 gb left.
I bought a 32 gb and found I had to be cautious when backing up etc. but, its manageable. I bought myself a usb otb microsd card reader for doing backups and storing large files to rectify that though.
I bought 32GB and I didnt even notice I had which one I had after awhile. Music: Spotify, Photos: Google Photos, Videos: Youtube, Game: Clash of Clans ONLY! Hahahahaha.
When no internet coverage, I just live with it, without any local storage, taking pictures or do something else.
While travelling, I only use my phones for Whatsapp/Telegram and taking pictures so I 'm good.
Of course those are my usage, if you need movies/musics while travelling go with 64GB.

Mi9 64GB or 128GB

Hello guys, please tell which of this two versions you've got and why.
Does it mather to pay about +-50 more to get the 128GB version instead of 64GB, if just the storage size changes?

Well sadly no expandable storage which sucks, so get 128gb if you can. Personally I have 64gb because thats the only version available at Amazon.
I depends on your usage, how much space do you use on your current phone?
I had less than 20gb left on my 64gb Mi A2, and now, i have 73 gb left on my 128gb Mi 9, if i had the 64gb version, i would have only 9gb left. You also need to think about your space for 2 years from now, and also for the resell value.
I bought the 128gb and I don't know why. 64GB would be enough.
Buying the 64GB here. Even with Netflix downloads, a few GB games and tons of photos., I’m hoovering at 20 GB free space after a year and a half. Google Photos saves a lot of space and unlimeted cloud storage in a decent enough quality.

Running 32GB internal + 64GB external, but most is on external SD btw. I have some OTG C to use too.
128g here! the way i look at it rather have too much than not enough haha
I have 6GB/128GB because the Mi 9 has no external storage
I have the Mi 9 because Belsimpel (dutch shop) only has the 128GB version in blue.
I wanted the 128gb version but it was out of my budget (was way overpriced too). So i went with the 64gb and to be honest i'm gonna miss my 128gb i had with my redmi note 4 as external storage ... but oh well at least i can sell it and get some money back out of it. c:
I have 6/64 and for me it is ok.
I don't need many space in mobile phone, just some gb for mp3 to listen in can via bluetooth.
If better 64 o 128 gb depend of your own use of mobile phone.
bought the 128gb version myself as the price i got on it was quite cheap but 64 one would have been just fine too (as i had a 32gb s7 edge previously with 32gb sdcard)
256GB, the more the merrier
Do note that the storage speed differs quite a bit between the two versions. The 128GB one has faster sequential reads (almost 800MB/s, compared to 620-690 the 64GB one gets) while the 64GB one has almost twice as fast seq write speeds (about 390MB/s compared to 180-ish the 128GB one gets). The other parameters are usually in line, they also tend to differ between ROM versions on the global dev I've been running until now.
My current phone is the LG V10 so I went with the 8/128. I don't like buying phones so I wanted to make sure this one lasts as long as possible.
Noticed that no-one is mentioning how much space you do actually get after turning the phone for the first time. I have see somewhere that 128g version has 117g free. Is this true?

Yup. I just roughly calculated it and I got 116,88gb. Don't remember the exact value.
Try get 128. But only if you use your camera often (specially video). I bought 64gb and now only my gallery take 15GB. 4min video from some event takes 1, 2GB. So let's think before.
I got the 64gb because the 128gb was too expensive when I ordered it. I use Google Photos so no storage space used for photos on my phone and it's free. Thanks whoever posted the RAM speed differences. I was unaware. I wonder if the 256gb has faster speeds?
Just before I purchased the phone, I changed my mind and went for 64gb version.
My previous phone had 64gb storage and 64gb SD card, and I was using around 100gb of the total.
On the way to the shop I had a little cleaning, and checked the files on my SD card and it turned out almost all is useless and I just keep it on my phone (I had 2 year old TWRP backups, many custom ROMs and mods that I don't need and use etc)
Same apps and similar amount of downloads (on Netflix, Spotify, Photos etc) and I have 30gb free on my 64gb Mi 9. So, I don't think 128gb is necessary for a regular user.
Now, I can use the 50 euros I saved, in buying a 20W wireless charger and a power-bank.

Best MicroSD Card?

Trying to choose what MicroSD card to get for my Note 9
First is
Samsung Evo Plus 256gb
Link:- https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B06XFS5657/ref=cm_cr_othr_mb_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8&th=1&psc=1
Second is
SanDisk Extreme Plus 128gb
Link:-
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07FCMRBTM/ref=psdcmw_1345826031_t3_B07FCMKK5X?th=1&psc=1
Right away you'll notice one is 128gb & the other is 256gb this is because the storage isn't too important, 128 is enough, 256 is the same price..
However the SanDisk one is A2 certified & V30 certified which the Samsung one is not, also the SanDisk has a 170mb/s read Vs the Samsung's 100mb/s read
Will the A2 & V30 certification even make a difference on a Note 9?
Appreciate any help or opinions? Thanks

The impact between the Samsung SD & Sandisk is not so Big I guess. Anyway i have a pro SD card from Samsung in my Note 9 & what to Say? Works perfect.. but if you get more space for same price..i would recommend the Samsung anyway..
That depends on what you're going to store on the SD card. If it's music or data that's doesn't need lightning access, go for 256GB. You're getting 2x storage with same price. 100 mb/s read is not less either.
The premium cards with names like Extreme or Pro advertising more than a hundred MB/s speeds are useful for cases like 4K video recording or RAW (or burst shot) photography.
I assume your Note9 still has plenty of storage to do these stuff. You can always record or shoot photos on internal storage and can anytime move the older ones to SD card if you get low on storage.
As I have said, please do share the reason you're thinking about getting 100+ GB SD card.

Mainly high quality photo's, high quality videos, high quality music often .flac instead of .mp3 & possibly some movies..
You're correct assuming that my Note 9 has plenty of storage left I've only used 29gb out of 128gb, however I prefer to keep music, photos & videos on a removable storage
The reason I'm thinking about getting 100gb+ is because I already have 3 MicroSD cards full at this moment in time, they're 32, 32, & 16 so that is already 80gb in total, so a 64gb MicroSD wouldn't be much use, the next one up is 128gb...
I want to move all the contents of the 3 MicroSD cards & move them on to the 1, easy to manage my files that way
I often backup the MicroSD contents on to my PC twice a month, I'd want that to be fast as possible
It's my understanding that the V30 certification is for filming & saving 4K video directly on to the MicroSD right?, That wouldn't be too important as I'd film it on to my device first then move it later on..
However the A2 certification is regarding read speed right? Which is 170mb/s on the SanDisk compared to 100mb/s on the Samsung, how noticeable is the extra 70mb/s and it what circumstances?
Yes, V30 means the card can sustain continuous video recording at 30 MB/s. You said you're going to record on internal storage itself (and you should be) so that shouldn't matter much to you.
That enhanced write and read speed (with some caching and efficient performance) with A2 can give you higher speeds while backing up the data to your PC but it's just 1.7x with 0.5x storage (not mentioning other bottlenecks for maximum speed). I consider the 256GB to be having far more VFM. Your backup frequency will also get halved with double storage, no?
You can never go wrong with either of these. Premium memory cards like V30 are meant for professional video recorders and camera. Playing even 4K videos requires around 50 mbps and FLAC are under 1 mbps.
I think you should get double the memory for same the price!

Yes I'd record on internal so V30 can be forgotten about pretty much
Could I also expect bottlenecking on the Samsung 256gb?, & yes my backup frequency would probably be reduced to once a month with the increased space
Yeah the V30 certification would definitely make a difference to me if I was using a professional camera etc. But as it's my Note 9 & I'd be saving to internal, I don't necessarily need it
I'll probably end up going with the Samsung 256gb thank you very much for your help!

Yes, by bottleneck I mean the capabilities of Memory Controller and Card Readers.
Upon reading over the internet, I have found most SD cards averaging Read/Write below 70 MB/s. Read one benchmarking here for Samsung EVO+ 256GB UHS-1 microSDXC U3 that advertises speeds over 90 MB/s.
The bottleneck here is the card reader on Note9 as well as the hardware limits.
Even on a PC, the card interface or the adapter (in case you use that) could be bottlenecks.
I think you're going the right way with double the memory with same the price. There's diminishing returns on higher performance with increasing price.

Both are good brands. However if you are probably gonna get the same data transfer speeds on your device as the Note 9 doesn't have a very fast microSDcard writter in it.
I have a Samsung Evo Plus 256gb and it's good and fast. I can only recommend it
