cannot create widgets in Nova-Launcher - Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I had a hardware-problem on my previous Fire 10 HD, so Amazon replaced it and I have to configure it again.
Previuously I had installed Nova-Launcher together with LaucherHijack and it worked.
This time I thought I could do away with LauncherHijack as I had rooted the device already, so I installed Nova via the Playstore and then simply did (as root):
pm enable com.teslacoilsw.launcher
pm disable com.amazon.firelauncher
And this worked - I now have Nova Launcher instead of firelauncher.
But there is one problem: I cannot create any widgets on Nova.
I can select a widget and drop it onto a Nova-page, but as soon as I let go of it the "settings"-dialog of FireOS pops up and the widget is not added.
Any idea where that problem might come from?
Many thanks!

Ok, I figured it out.
When you install Nova from the app-store you must not forget to do the appwidget-business as described here:
https://www.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire-os-custom-launcher-widgets/
Otherwise widgets won't work.

Ugh - why do that when there is a simple solution that doesn't require jumping through hoops.

Launchers for rooted nook tablet?

When I rooted my nook this morning, I selected Go Launcher because im kinda familiar with it. Anyways, im wondering if I could switch to that ADW Launcher and if so how?
Every time you install a new launcher, remove or update existing one you will be prompted which launcher do you want to use as the default.
ok but do i have to install the launcher through the bat file like i did when rooting it or do i get it off the market?
why didn't you try it? market should be fine.
Depending on how you rooted, you should be able to open NookColor Tools. From there you click All Settings > Manage applications > GO Launcher > Clear Defaults. Or you could uninstall it. That works too.
thanks brother. ill try it.

[Q] No Launchers Will Work At All

No matter which launcher I install, none of them will show up under any of the Home Switcher/Manager apps. I've been researching online for 2 days and I've done the things people mention, with no luck.
I've finally just installed GO Launcher EX, installed the .apk, put it in System/App, but holding the home button does nothing (I've read that this will open home switcher apps), NOTHING will give me any option to change my launcher to anything except the original kindle ones.
Does anyone have any other suggestions on how to get a launcher to actually work?
Thanks for your help!

I'm new to the site too, but 1st big question is did you do a reboot? That will solve a bunch of problem, if you reboot you should get a pop up saying that the device is being updated...also make sure you change the permissions to rw- r-- r--. If you haven't done these yet, hope it helps.
By the way I'm running Go Launcher HD for my homescreen.

I've done this too. That's why it's so frustrating. I can't find anything out there that I haven't done that will work. I'll try uninstalling the launcher and files again and do it all over and see if I can't get it to work. Just one question not related: When I download any .apk, do they ALL have to be moved to system/app? That's what I've been doing and everything else is working ok, I just wanted to double-check and see if this is what everyone else does too.
download the louncher u want the install it then go to date app locat the launcher and move it to system apps and then rebot kindle

Nova launcher works
Go launcher (Security and HD) works
SPB launcher dont works (warning its hard to remove it after a reboot )
Update: I finally got it to work! I deleted & uninstalled everything GO Launcher, but there was still a .apk file in one of my system folders. (Can't remember which one, I was just looking through all the folders to find any extra GO files that may not have been uninstalled/deleted.)
I took this file and put it in the System/app folder and rebooted. Voila! GO Launcher now works and hitting 'Home' doesn't make it go back to the kindle home page. FINALLY!
Do you need root for this?

Yes, on the kindle fire you have to be rooted anyway. I don't think you have to be rooted in regular tablets. I use Go Launcher, sslauncher, etc. on my phone and its not rooted.

You got Nova launcher to work? That's the one I'm using on my phone, but I couldn't get it to open on my kindle....hmmm
I'm currently using the go launcher HD for tablets which is working fine, but I'd love to use Nova if I could.

Install Go Launcher HD Without Root?

I just can't figure out the whole rooting thing. But I hate the KFHD's interface. Can I change it, if so, how?
Go to the Amazon App Store, download Easy Installer. Then go to Google and search for a Go Launcher HD .apk file of any version. Transfer that apk file to your storage on the tablet, load Easy Installer and install the launcher. Afterwards, go to your apps and initialize the launcher.

Didn't work for me....
That tells me nothing. WHAT didn't work for you?
I downloaded Easy Installer, got the apk and installed the package. After Go Launcher installs nothing happens. The option to "open" is geryed-out, my only choice is to click "done". After that, Go Launcher doesn't appear in my app list.
Then that launcher isn't compatible with Android 4.0, or at least with Amazon's OS. Apex, Nova, and ADW works fine.

I just wanted to confirm that this method creates an icon where I actually boot the launcher? I've considered the non-root methods to install an alternate launcher but it looks like they all are kind of a "soft" install where hitting the home button actually takes you back to the Amazon OS (requiring you to re-open the alt. launcher.)
You can set it inside the launchers. Nova, for example, allows you to change the function of the home button, when you press it, it asks what launcher is your main one, and when you select Nova, every time you hit the home it will return to Nova.
And yes, it does create an icon in your app drawer.

Widgets Capability? (Amazon Fire 5th gen)

I couldn't find anything about this on XDA, so I apologize if it's already been mentioned. I have root access and the Google Play store installed on my Fire. I've even gotten rid of the default launcher and installed Nova. Everytime I try to put a widget on the screen, however, something breaks and the screen automatically goes to Settings (device settings like About, Device Options, Display, etc).
Has anyone had any success with putting widgets on their Fire? Or is there a workaround? Thanks!
In a normal Android ROM, the first time that you add a widget in your launcher, you get a dialog asking for special system permissions.
In this Amazon modified ROM, this dialog doesn't seem to exist, and that's why it simply redirects to the settings app.
The solution is give this permission manually. How? You have to move the launcher APK to /system/priv-app/. You'll need root access for this, temporarily (booting a modified boot.img) or permanently. Search this forum for that and ask again if you get lost
Worked!

Now it works!

Widgets on Kindle Fire 5th gen

Okay so I rooted and installed apex launcher, and have google services with hangouts/gmail working. When I try to make a gmail widget on my screen it brings me to the settings page, and then the widget is gone.
I tried making apex launcher a system app by putting it's apk file in the /system/app folder that also did not work.
Is there a way to get widgets working?
Can't speak for apex but have no trouble with widgets using either now Launcher or Nova on my wifes, rooted with play services and store (and never registered with Amazon). Initially with now Launcher had to wait for play services update before it worked. Can't remember if I did anything else to get it working but I recall that I originally had the same problem.
I used Nova and made it a system app, and widgets work. I used this app /system/app mover from F-Droid: http://click.xda-developers.com/api...f-droid.org/repository/brows...systemappmover That I found from another thread on here.
I was successful on creating widgets for those apps that I'd made system apps. There are apps at google market which can do so.
I tried both Nova and Apex and converting to system app didn't do it. (So maybe build version matters. I'm running November 12.) Anyway, you may need to install Apex in /system/priv-app (recommended by @martinml and others). First make sure perms on the apk in /system/app are rw- r-- r-- (chmod 644) and reboot. If still no widgets, move to priv-app (confirm perms, reboot).
(Or, as mentioned here and by @sd_shadow in several posts, widgets work with Google Now without conversion.)
Widgets working in Google Now Launcher if you are willing to switch.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I never did get widgets working on the stock rom but i never tried google launcher.. I'm on CM12.1 and never going back. It just works great and widgets work too.

/system/app mover from the Play Store worked perfectly, moving Nova launcher as a system app (running rooted 5.1.1)
Now I have widgets! Thanks!
thank you that did the trick... i was just going to give up and not worry about widgets. had the problem with trying to put widgets and all it did was take me to the settings menu.

So do you just install Nova from the play store then convert it to a system app while leaving Fire OS alone to get widgets to work ? I tried Super tool which deletes Fire OS and installs Nova as a system app automatically, but widgets do not work that way.

I did the same thing and was able to move Nova over to system apps with the /system/app mover without any trouble even with the Fire launcher having been deleted.
Finally! A solution that works!

Thank you so much for this solution...I've been trying to get around this issue on my rooted Kindle Fire for weeks now. Many thanks!
Please help!
I tried the /system/app mover from F-Droid as mentioned above by SilverPony2001 in an attempt to change my Apex Launcher from user/app to system/app. I rebooted and now my tablet screen only comes on and off for a few seconds as if I was pressing the lock button over and over. I'm not sure what to do at this point?
