Which phone will be more long lasting in terms that it will not slow down after Android or Interface (Samsung Experience, One UI) upgrades?
I'm looking between these 2 phones for the one that will have a better CHANCE for lasting 5 years being as quick and as “battery life good” AS POSSIBLE.
I think all of us know that the OEMs make our phones slower by patches, upgrades with attached algorithms to slowly month after month (so we couldn’t notice) shorten the battery life, slower the speed and make battery consumption bigger with sole intention for us to buy a new model next year or in the next 2 years.
BTW I don’t need the Pen and I don’t play any games and I don’t need a super good cam. EDIT: no rooting and no custom romming for me on that device for ever.
If I don't need the Pen why to bother with Note you may ask?
Well, I hope that Note being the business phone is going to be treated better by Samsung in the above terms than a Galaxy S phone, but maybe it’s the other way around?

i'm using a Tab S 8.4 SM-T705 LTE as a daily driver it's coming up to 5 years, it's still going strong! im rooted modded my Tab S is an awesome bit of kit!
Both phones you have suggested, can easily last past 5 years so it's up to you what are you reqiuremnets do you need a S-PEN ? or you into photography then go for the S10+
i'm planning on keeping my Note 9 for next 5+ years! that's if samsung dont put a hole in the display, for the next Note lineup, if they do then this is my last Note from samsung i'm ever purchasing!
if you dont mind the hole punch in the display? Then go for the S10+ as that screen on the S10+ looks awesome! i find it much brighter then the Note 9! Also i doubt i'll ever upgrade my Note 9 to ONE UI PIE 9 it runs super smooth on Oreo 8.1 so i'm sorted for the next half decade!

1. As I said I don't need a S-Pen and I don't need a super good cam. So neither drawing nor photo making is my deal. I just want a super fast Samsung phone like these 2.
2. The screen od S10+ looks and feels in touch even absolutley awesome.
3. I'm happy to hear that someone is not laughing that a device would last 5 years..
4. I found out yesterday in shop that on stock rom (Oreo) Note 9 runs smooth but I fear that after upgrading to Pie+ One UI there's going to be at least micropauses, (it freezes for a second), lags, no smoothnes enymore like in S8 that recently upgraded from Oreo. All stock, no root, no custom.
5. Do You think the same will happen to your Note9 after that upgrade? Are You afraid?
6. Is it possible not to accept an Android upgrade in Samsung but still accept security patches? And how can I do it since each time I will me asked to first - upgrade to Pie+OneUI?

1: S10+ is the one to go for then!
2: That screen is awesome i had a play with one wow it’s really sharp and bright it's an beautiful AMOLED display SAMSUNG nailed the S10+ display!
3: Dude there's nothing wrong with having a half a decade old device! (Please ignore keyboard warriors! Oh no he’s keeping a device for 5 years lol) When people see video playing on my Tab S 8.4 it's so sharp and bright they are shocked how amazing it looks not bad for nearly a 5 year old device!
4: its early days for ONE UI PIE 9 as i did install it only played with it for 24/48 hours! Man they have taken so much away really feels childish! i think Samsung thinks if they copy Apple they will become even more successful stupid way Samsung is going!
5: See my 4th answer early days as i said before let ONE UI PIE 9 get ripe maybe in a few years i'll upgrade!

With all do respect it's harder to get hacked on 1) tablet 2) old 3) rooted and maybe custom romed 4) not so popular compared to the phones we're talking about

if i didn’t have the Note 9 i would have gone for the S10+ one thing i hate about these days smartphones batteries are not user removable! My Tab S 8.4 i could easily get 10+ hours out of it hard use!
Now i get around 3 or 4 hours that’s with just under 4000 chargers discharges!
So this time I’m not letting the note 9 drop below 20% and i try not to charge full 100% keep it at 80 or 90% i just want to see few years even 4 years down the road if the battery can give me a easily day use as it now!
Just be careful with battery charge discharges if you really want it to last 4/5 years!

1. You removed the old battery and bought a new one?
2. I am already careful with that 20-90% but ti's quite hard on S8 with 3000 mAh but I imagine it even could be harder on Note 9 with 4000 mAh.
3. Let me ask You this: On the day of start of sale of Note 9 or on the day of start of sale of S10+ if both devices cost exactly the same would you still gone for S10+ and why?
You could have gone for Galaxy S devices long ago, with S9+ for example or ealier. Why did You even buy that Note9 then if You probably don't share my theory of Samsung respecting the Note users more than Galaxy S users?

I don't need to watch it. I compered these cams long time while being in a shop.
I don't care how great the winner is. The looser is still so good that I don't care about that.
And I said something about camera (read again please) for people not to try to suggest me getting a Xiaomi POCOPHONE F1 that has Snapdragon 845, from screens on the net it has a good camera and it costs 300 USD.

2: brilliant i only recently found out 20-80% battery theory!
3: That’s hard question wow I’m leaning towards the Note 9 due to Bluetooth S-Pen it's so cool and real handy in real world use! Plus Note feels more pro type of device! But after seeing the S10+ the other day! Sorry here I go again the screen i know i keep going on about the screen sorry i can’t get it out of my head it's so crisp bright! But the only true upper hand the S10+ has over the Note-9 is the camera setup and here i go again screen and off course the newer Exynos CPU!

3. I don't mind that you bring it up often cause I also was paralyzed when I saw and touched S10+ screen with my bare hands and it totally ruined my plans for quick decision making. I was mezmorized just like You and yeah the Note 9 ' 10nm Exynos vs. 8 nm Exynos in S10+ that makes it even more harder cause the seller told me it's the first Samsung SoC that took the idea of AI seriously, however I don't believe in this hardware-software AI marketing BS. It's just good software algorythms and all - like the ones that make photos better and find faces on camera app. The newer Exynos is just better case it's minus nm and its newer a probably better.

You said a couple of things (you don't need a pen, for note in this case, and don't need super camera, S10 in this other case) that for me means that you don't really need both of them and for the pen, this was the real deal that made a note the most reliable respect to others in business terms in all the years since this solution was adopted to a phone / faphlet making it more nearly to laptops or desktops in its business functions.
In business terms, less bugs is the right solution and to have this situation, that means less firmware updates and not the opposite because when having a lot of updates, that means mostly correction of bugs and not only monthly security pacthes....for example, passing from oreo to Pie only when Pie gets to be solid rock is right for the note because it's intended for business uses but not for the S10 because it's intended for people who wants mostly a new OS for the new functions and don't mostly care of some secondary bugs knowing that there going away in the next releases so they can wait. Seams ridiculess, but believe me that there are a lot of people that wants the beta versions (full of the wrost bugs) because they can't wait for the stable versions coming out.
Saing this, the bugs that can afflict a phone after a major OS update is equel to every model so battery drains, freezes, slowing down situations and other things can or can't happen equally to all and mostley bepends on the modifications (new launchers, apps in conflict with the new OS, ecc) made to the phone before the upgrade that goes in conflict and even depends on cash /data conflicts and corruptions so that's the reason why when having problems, wipe cash or data of the single app or of the entire phone resolves.
For the phone itself, the note 9 is the only one having a revolutionary cooper pipe cooling system that makes cpu and gpu working cooler and faster (less autotrotheling for to much heating... in other words, less cpu gpu frequency drop downs for heating protection ) and makes all being more durable and only for this, the note is the best since now, even more then the S10, and this should be even the answer of the title of this thread.
On the other hand, the S10 is the new model and like for the coming out of all new models, it's going to have new hardware solutions so better cameras, stronger and faster cpu / gpu respect to the older models. Notoriously, the note series having same hardware of the S series so the note 9 is basicly an S9 with a better cooling system (the first time happening) , bigger battery and screen and also having a pen with correlated functions...so, definitely, the choise is yours and depends on what you need or want.

That is a very original point of view. Thanks a lot for Your input.
1. I don't need a pen cause I'm not an artist, drawer, graphics guy. I bought a Stylus for S8 and I enjoy it and use it 1/3 of the time. Maybe I get addicted to S-Pen like many people as I've heard.
2. I like smooth and fast responsive phones with super AMOLED and nice interface ..... etc. so S10+ vs. Note 9 stays on the battle field.
3. Do You think that upgrading S8 the first day Pie+OneUI came trough OTA and started lagging, 1-second freezing, not smoothing would never happen on the first day on Note9 and now after some time I could with no hesitation update Note9 and be sure that I will notice no drop in the 2. point areas?

So true! Once you see that screen on the S10+ man it's like a sledge hammer imprint on the brain! crazy how bright and really vivid + super sharp Samsung has pushed that oled panel to wow!
Yeah defo the Exynos in the S10+ is way better! Samsung is really pushing towards the AI side of things! I havent really read up on the 10nm vs 8nm will do sometime! Bixby they are pushing as there Ai, Bixby isn't that bad it comes pretty handy once you know the commands!
For Dex you need a USB-C - HDMI cable or you can purchase Clicky--> Samsung Multiport Adapter EE-P5000BBEGWW Also you will need a Bluetooth keyboard, and mouse, once all hooked up you got a full desktop experience!
Same with Linux witch can run in DEX so you got a full desktop O.S from your smartphone!
DEX is pretty polished off you can browse the web play games edit documents office etc. really you got a portable laptop in your pocket!

Yeah Dex first launched on the S8, S8+ it was a big deal for Samsung! They haven’t updated the page, it is compatible with the Note 9
I’m not sure if you can charger wireless, I do know it has inbuilt fan to keep your phone cool while in Dex mode... And it does charge the phone once docked!

Dude, one very important thing, a "expert" on the net and in real life calimed that:
- the DeX station for Note8 is exclusive in name and in destination
- the DeX for Galaxy S9 is exclusive in destination and name
So now let's focus is there a third type of Dex or a fourth and what it is name and what does it do and for which phone is it?

For 1. Pen is not mostly used for drawing reasons and normally it's used in many working fields and even in multy tasking environments and its the only way you can put an hand made signature in a document for example...
For 2. The response that you can have is mostley the same and if there's a difference, you will not be able to notice it if you don't put them both near to do the same things... So for me, this thing is worthless for deciding only if you consider it when phone is cold... Heat them by using them and, you can look if the note is faster because it's cooling system let's the cpu run on the same frequency as its cold...
For 3. The first version released of every OS is laggy whatever model you consider, Even for the note with Pie, then the other releases corrects buggs. Explained in my post why other things can happen and doesn't depend only for os having bugs by itself. OTA is the worst way for updating... better using a pc with smart switch or Odin.

2. I totally get what you mean but I am sensitive for Samsung's lagging, let's leave it there cause we both go into places we don't wan to be. S10+ vs. Note 9 stays!!!

Well, explaining some things could be to long so, for not going OT and for returning on the threads title and question, if the software is the same and offers same problematics , hardware is different and even if S10 has the most last hardware, the note has the most efficient cooling system ever made for a device and that makes more durability and also makes the device faster because not heating where others will causing, in the others, a decrease of cpu's frequency for overheating ... So, for me, note 9 is better.

In terms of business, the one thing Samsung takes seriously is Knox. This is irregardless of device.
Knox is what makes Samsung money once a device is sold to a business.
Want to build a custom APP using Samsung APIs or manage your Samsung device inventory, you have to pay Knox licensing fees.
One of the primary reasons you see security updates released for older devices is because multinational corporations and government outfits have thousands of Samsung devices in their possession. If we have a issue, we raise it with Samsung. They address it based on OUR severity versus THEIR OWN. If they don't, we go to the Carrier we purchased it from and apply pressure. Either way, internally or externally, the problem is addressed and the average consumer/enthusiast benefits.

UPDATE! Unfortunately my note 4 took a fall and landed on a jagged rock (serves me right for holding it in my mouth using the flashlight) - Anyway, I ended up finding a (like new) LG V20 for $300 USD (It's big but I had to make a sacrifice) It was very hard to decide over the mate 9, oneplus 3t and the V20. Because I got it at a reasonably low price it won't be much of a loss at resale if I decide on something else, especially as something is always right around the corner.

Impressions about the LG V20 after 2 weeks in comparison to the Note 4.
What is better?
Performance is snappier on the V20 (for obvious reasons)
The screen looks more detailed and sharper (even though they both have the same resolution I think the LCD tech is better in this instance IMO)
The device is easier to hold (I really didn't think a small reduction in width could be so noticeable)
The second display is very useful for launching recent apps and using it to launch flashlight while the screen is off is very handy
Battery life is very similar (I average 5 hours of SOT over 24 hour period) - This is a tie but considering people would constantly rant about poor battery life I had to mention it
Although I don't use headphones often you really can tell the difference when using high level cups
The cameras are much better for enthusiasts. You also have a lot of options that are usually only seen in actual cameras (focus peaking, advanced manual modes etc)
What is not?
Loudspeaker and earpiece are deeper but sound less detailed and clear (even after removing the speaker grille from the chin). If you rely heavily on listening to podcasts or anything else where plain vocals are concerned than this will be a bit of an adjustment for you
There are so many different model variants that development is far less than I originally read in to (almost to the point where I am prepared to look for another phone)
I really do miss having physical keys (I am getting used to it, though)
Overall I am not disappointed in the actual device or it's capabilities in comparison to the Note 4. I could definitely forgive the little things I don't like if it had a stronger community. I will see how it goes over the next few months

I'm really struggling to replace my note 4. Don't get me wrong, you can get better handsets, but not a big enough leap for me to make the switch. For example I will list the features that I require in a list from most important to least important features.
1. Community/company development
2. Screen size to body ratio (NON CURVED) (Critical. I want a smaller phone but with still at least a 5.5" display)
3. Capacitive/Physical buttons. (Heavily preferred but open minded to change if everything else is perfect)
4. Large removable battery (Open minded to change)
5. Micro SD and IR Blaster (These aren't deal breakers)
Obviously the rest of the phone would need to have higher internal specs etc, else it wouldn't be an upgrade!
The closest i can find is the
Oneplus 3T (But it unfortunately is a similar size with smaller screen)
LG V20 (Quite bigger than Note 4)
Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus (Little bit taller than Note 4 and unsure about future dev)
Mi Mix (Much bigger and poor camera but this type of design really caught my eye)
Without reducing screen size it's really hard to find anything that ticks every box by a large enough margin to make it feel worth it to me. What are your thoughts? Do you have any advice or do you feel the same way?

So I'm with you guys in wondering what to go for. Something around 5.5 inches with an sd slot a removable battery and a solid camera are my main concerns.

unexpected reboots/shutdowns can be due to degraded/dying battery,
freezes/lags (tried to flash from 0?) due to the EMMC is about to fail.
i'm in the same boat, but i want at least:
a 6-6.2 inch screen with minimum to no bezels,
635 CPU with 6GB (to be a substantial upgrade)
removable battery.
our note 4 fits 6.4 inch bezelless display (sacrificing home button), so it's perfectly viable.
i guess, we should wait 3 more months till S8 and other options will come out, that promise to be bezelless. Xiaomi Mi Mix did the job, now everybody wants such a phone. At the moment, i see no options to buy either.

I've got 3 different batteries including an Anker one that's only a couple of months old so I dont think it can be that.
What did you mean, flash from 0?

Before I installed it, I flashed the latest stock rom with odin to get updated base and modems (sammobile) for 910F version.
After that Flashed twrp, did three consecutive wipes in twrp (incl data to clean internal memory) and then flashed the note 7 rom.
Did take a very long time to boot, but that's normal.
If roms don't boot, it's probably because of the bootloader or base not compatible with rom.
Used a couple of kernels, and the best one so far is the latest Xceed test build (N910FG-MM-Test-bld4k.zip) and set it on conservative for food battery.
Absolutely love the rom, no problems at all for me. Makes the note 4 look up to date again.

Welcome on board. Have the same problem. My contract ends now and I've completely no idea where to go now. List of phones which I could get isn't too great. Huawei P9, Samsung S7, HTC 10 or Sony X. Naah. In the end I will probably just buy something but still it's hard to find for me a decent replacement for Note 4. Thought about Pixel but a quick look at the price tag and bam we are far,far away.
On another hand, LG looks interesting. G5 or V20. Especially the G5 with add-ons capability, but I'm not sure would it be an upgrade or just simple change.

I did spend like whole Sunday looking at different phones, Youtube vids, reviews etc. but still don't see anything claiming the top spot to replace Note. In the end I did just order new battery and Ill just wait till 2017 to see what will show up.
A perfect replacement for a Note 4 is a Note 4S, better spec with a decent fingerprint scanner, LOL if only Samsung thought of that. You guys should wait till after CES 2017, it's in February (CMIIW) there should be new phones out afterwards. The only worthy replacement thus far is either the S7 Edge or V20 IMHO.

Thought about that this morning...being a huge LG fan in the past, I have to say I'm quite disappointed with the G5.
V20 is a beast I've heard but don't know if the G5 would be that big a leap from your Note 4.
I'd probably say the Oneplus 3T or hold out for S8 Edge

Thats true. For me personally Note 4 is so well made and tailored that I would be happy to stay with it forever. Ticks all the boxes, and thats the problem for me.
Lg G5 is nice but lacks something to convince to change. V20 on another hand is tempting. I really like the idea with second wide angle lens. If nothing jumps till march I will give Lg a go.

don't forget about the EMMC time bomb, and it's low performance (read/write speed).
also, it could be time to upgrade to a faster, more efficient chipset with a modem of a higher LTE Category, and more bands.

Mine just started showing the EMMC issue's. No luck at the end of year. The only option for me is S7. The best choice from what I can get from my provider, not much too choose from.

I'm basing on some reviews, speed tests, but the two seems to be on par with each other. Price is/may kind of an issue here as I would love to use some of the money (if I buy the OP5) for the after sales and some personal stuff. However if the Note 8 is really "bang for the buck" then I'll gladly go with it. I also tried to search some issues. Here's what I found so far:

Bluetooth Issue
Overheating issue
Jelly Effect in screen
Note 8:
Red tint in a lot of device
Light leak (lights leaking on the side of the phone not much of an issue for me)

Note: Just to be clear, the devices in comparison are OP5 8gb/128gb and Note 8 6gb/64gb Exynos
Note: I'm posting this to each respective forum to have a fair discussion for each phone. I hope this is allowed. I also hope to help some people that have the same options with me.

Thank you guys. After a long comparison, I'm going for the OP5 even with the rumors of OP5T. I just hate the back fingerprint scanner placements which is the trend now. And regarding with the bezels, I'm more into those phone with bezels on top and bottom for landscape usage. I've been trying the S8+, and some games that I play doesn't maximize or utilize the whole screen which leaves some part of the screen blank. However, the screen in the Note 8 is A1 dont get me wrong, but I'm more into the performance and the OP5's screen is enough. Thank you guys!

And the fact that oneplus 5,would not until now come out in the open about it, really bugged me and beggars belief!. You can see the problem as soon as you pick the device up, so that reason I went note 8 and it's been an amazing experience. I haven't played games on it yet, still enjoying just browsing, multimedia, taking photos of my munchkins etc.
I had the oneplus 5 like 4 phones ago and it was great. No issues whatsoever, no jelly or any of the other issues you mentioned tbh. Bang for bucks it is the best phone you can get. Great for flashing and whatnot. That being said the note 8 has so much more added value and the exynos has a dev community that should keep you flash happy for years to come...

Ah yes, the jelly effect. I've also heard it too and seen it in facebook. That thing also prevents me in purchasing this device. However, some owners claimed that their device has small to no signs of jelly effect in their device. So I think they have fixed it now, I wish. Thank you for your comment

I a solution for you to avoid those listed "issues" if you decide to buy a Note 8.
Just find a open box or used one and inspect it fully before handing over the money.

For me would have gone oneplus 5,cause that thing is crazy fast. However the jello, jelly put me right off. And the fact that oneplus 5,would not until now come out in the open about it, really bugged me and beggars belief!. You can see the problem as soon as you pick the device up, so that reason I went note 8 and it's been an amazing experience. I haven't played games on it yet, still enjoying just browsing, multimedia, taking photos of my munchkins etc.

That's a personal decision. Only you can weigh the pros and cons of each phone... and you seem to have done a great job of listing them.
The SD card is the dealbreaker for me. I carry about 200 GB of hi-res music. At this point, that's difficult to replicate any other way that doesn't involve paying even more for music I already own.
I've had the oneplus5, now currently have the note 8.
The reasons that made me return the oneplus 5 were as follows
- The jelly screen ....once you see it, it'll bug you forever
- The camera in my opinion wasn't all that..the lack of OIS was really annoying. Videos were shaky as hell! (It was improved with software stabilisation, bit it wasn't anything compaired to realtime optical stablisation
I really wanted to like the phone, it's so cheap for what you get and I love how oneplus allow you to root and mod away.
You need to decide what you'd want from your phone

In 3 or so years you probably won't want a phone with all that bezel. I'll venture out and say if you want a phone that won't feel obsolete sooner than later do to design get the note 8 hands down (or s8+).....imo

I think the Note 8 has a higher chance of being obsolete. Reason being the 8GB RAM of the OnePlus 5; it will probably become standard on all devices in 2018 or 2019.
It's not like all that extra screen gives you extra functionality that you won't have if your device has bezels. So I don't see why a device with bezels would become obsolete.
Design is really the last thing you should look at when making your decision. You're gonna use one of those devices, not stare at it and admire its design. You're probably gonna put a case on it anyway, so that whole design aspect flies out the window.

I respect your opinion but I think you're off a smidge. If design were not important there would be no iPhone X. Expect large bezels to be frowned upon in the 2 years. Bezels will get smaller that's just a fact. 8gb is overkill how will OEMs justify the 8gb when Apple does wonders with 3. 6gb will remain the maximum and 4gb the standard. We might see 8gb again but it sure won't become the norm.
Now I know that I referred to Apple as a reference for both arguments but for better or for worse Android sets trends and they cement it. It's just facts.

Yeah, the camera in OP5 kinda sucks at videos. I've watched many camera reviews against Note 8 and boy that OP5 videos are shaky but I think they can do better after software updates. However the stills from OP5 looked good that it made the OP5 worth it atleast at good lighting. Don't get me wrong, the Note 8 outputs are better but I guess it doesn't justify the price differences.

Thank you guys. After a long comparison, I'm going for the OP5 even with the rumors of OP5T. I just hate the back fingerprint scanner placements which is the trend now. And regarding with the bezels, I'm more into those phone with bezels on top and bottom for landscape usage. I've been trying the S8+, and some games that I play doesn't maximize or utilize the whole screen which leaves some part of the screen blank. However, the screen in the Note 8 is A1 dont get me wrong, but I'm more into the performance and the OP5's screen is enough. Thank you guys!

I just bought an Ocean Blue Exynos 512GB Note9 2.5 months ago. Had an S5 for 5 years before it. The phone's amazing. I'd advise you to get the 512GB version as that model comes with 8GB RAM instead of 6. I constantly have 15 to 20 open apps in memory and unless the app is designed to refresh after a certain period of time, I never have app refreshes caused by low memory or Android killing my apps.
On Android 10 OneUI 2.0 I can safely get 8 hours of screen on time without any attempt to save my battery life. All my apps and system are with dark mode turned on though but I don't consider this an attempt at saving battery life as I've always preferred dark themes over lighter ones anyway.
Games like Asphalt 9 run with no issues at all, just the battery temperature rises to 40C if you play it for 1 hour nonstop. I'm not a gamer so that doesn't bother me at all as I rarely play it.
Finally, the Note9 gets monthly security updates and it will get OneUI 2.1 in June. That will most likely be its last major update though but if you don't really care for having Android 11 it's no problem at all as the phone is full of features anyway.

It seems the Note 9's reached root finally, while the Note 10 hasn't. I don't see virtually any ROMs in the N10 forum. That's another reason I'm leaning N9. I'd bet it'll get Android 11 thanks to devs here.

I'm still a corded headphone user, so the Note 9's 3.5mm jack really calls to me. Also, if I went Note 10, I'd want the 5G variant for futureproofing, and by then I'm still approaching four-digit pricing, even with the N20 coming. But I might still get the 10. Tell me: Keeping in mind that specs don't mean as much now as they used to, what makes the Note 10 better aside from just being one generation newer?

Personally, I don't think I'd recommend a Note 9 in mid 2020. With the device already 2 years old, who knows when Samsung will stop supporting it (in otherwords, sending out security updates). Furthermore, we also don't know what the last Android version is that we as Note 9 users will see. Lets say we're not eligible for an Android 11 update, we're screwed. The US variant's bootloader is locked, therefore we're unable to load any custom ROMs, much less an Android 11 (or higher) based ROM.
Now if you only want a device that works just fine, well, my Note 9 works just fine and two years later, still handles everything I throw at it. I just wish I could root it, throw on a custom ROM and still use it as a daily driver. There's one particular app I want to use (Viper4Android), that fixed my Bluetooth issues in my former device (Note 4), but the issue (being audio quality) still plagues my Note 9. Too bad my Note 4 was in such sad shape and barely able to run because of outdated hardware, otherwise I would still be on it or the root access.

The Note9 has iris scanner, heart rate monitor, no hole on the front, has a headphone jack, has a LED notification light, the speakers are better than the Note10's (this is proven, can't give link now though), the power button is on the right side and the rear design, for me, looks way better than the newer models. Oh yeah, also the physical fingerprint scanner is way better than the in-screen one. Not to mention that you can get the 512GB storage version for half the price of the 512GB storage version of the Note10+. Force home press is also there on Note9 only.

If the OP doesn't think that updates are the most important thing in a phone (which they're definitely not), then I don't see how that's a problem. If from all of the current Note9 features he doesn't see anything that he may want missing then updates don't matter for him. And why would we be screwed if we don't get Android 11? Note9 has had Android 8.1, Android 9, Android 10 OneUI 2.0 and soon it's getting Android 10 OneUI 2.1. I'd say that's quite a lot + it seems like Android 11 is not a major update so no new features as of now.
I'm talking about the international unlocked Exynos version btw, it has root, bootloader is unlocked and there are many custom ROMs. My advice - never buy a career branded phone. That's when you'll be really screwed xd

About root and custom ROM stuff, it's not worth it anymore in my opinion. You lose more things than you gain. If you root you lose Secure Folder and Samsung Pay and maybe Samsung Health forever. Even if some of those can be brought back, it's a hassle. The stock OneUI ROM has many of the root-only features from the past built into it. Also I was very surprised that thanks to Dolby Atmos I didn't need nor want Viper4Android anymore I've been using V4A on both my S3 Mini and S5 before, I also rooted the S3 Mini very early after having it and the S5 on the same day as I got it so you could say I was a tinkering kind of guy But with the Note9 that changed as it has everything I'd ever want out of the box.
I bought the last 2 new note 9 from Samsung directly through there Ebay store one still in the box never opened both for 349 each let's just say I got a good deal for the price I had note 10+ for 3 days and returned it didn't care for it much. Quality isnt the same and that hole punch is obnoxious to me.
As a Note 9 user, I would say YES. But not the 6GB variant, although it is sufficient for daily use but 8GB variant is the ideal choice. With 4000mAh battery, Iris Scanner, No punch hole display, I would say if is worth to buy unless you prioritize OS updates .

I would. I have a N960U Special Edition with 512GB internal storage and 8GB Ram. I have recently downgraded the OS from Android 10 back to Android Pie due to the fact that Android 10 has issues with the Secure Folder. Which I have tried very hard to resolve. But couldn't...

You'll love it as I'm coming from the S5 which is a bit worse than the Note 4 in terms of specs but still same year models I didn't have money to buy Note 4 in early 2015 so now I got the best Note9 there is
I got mine month a go....never looked back.... no mid range for 350 can match it...and it has jack...

I jumped from the note 4 to the 8 and quickly to the 9. Its amazing compared to the 4. I rooted all my phones and see no need now. The cameras are awesome. Hell this phone is more powerful them my laptop. Oh and dex is cool and getting better.

I think its well worth it. If you don't plan to get the Note 20 absolutely. And I am sure they can be had for a decent price. Good luck. Don't know where you plan to buy it from. But I have helped several people over the past few weeks that have got Notes off Ebay and they had numerous issues, some were even fake. When I have purchased off Ebay I always ask seller to email pics of the actual device along with the about phone screen. Not all that buy off Ebay have issues but I know some have. Again hope you find what you're looking for.

Have both the Note 9 and the 10+.
Both are excellent phones, though I do see a speed difference in the them. The Note 9 is, in my opinion, noticeably slower than the Note 10+, especially if I've been using the 10+ for a while. This is only noticeable for a short while until I get used to the 9 again but it certainly makes you fall in love with the speed of the 10+ again.
Both have their pro's and con's, most noticeable is the iris scanner, 3.5mm headphone jack and heart rate sensor on the Note 9 with the ToF camera, 12gb of RAM and newer updates of Android on the 10+. Also the 10+ has fast charge and is able to wirelessly charge other devices too. For every upgrade there is a loss but that works both ways...
I have both in the Exynos variant as I live outside the US so both rootable.
Overall, the Note 9 still holds it's own against most flagship devices (hell, the Note 10 lite has the internal specs of the Note 9 so you should be able to get Android 11 from there if a dev is happy to to do that), it is still a viable option if you want a flagship phone for a reduced price but just remember that there are going to be fewer updates for it and they are no longer a priority.

The day has come. The Note9 arrived. Before I set it up, anything I should know about why I should/shouldn't update right out the box? Should I update to Android 10 right away, or is there any reason to do something else?

Yes this is great phone i already using it great company
So far I have to say this phone is on its way to becoming the New GOAT. Build quality is stellar, i don't mind the camera bump, small sacrifice for a better shooter. Plus I always rest my finger against it. But that being said, it's pretty much the perfect phone IMO.
The display, the smoothness, the cameras. If I can get 6h + SOT on top of that it'll definitely become my GOAT Samsung phone. Dethroning the Note 7 who dethroned the Galaxy S4 Google play edition but I digress.
I don't see myself moving to another phone any time soon.

Initial thoughts after final setup:
Going from a A20 ultra to a Note 20 ultra, I think this phone just looks and might even perform better. The feel in the hand, the fingerprint reader, everything seems to run smoother. I'm loving it so far.
My main concern is the battery life with heavy use. I've tweaked the settings a bit, so I guess I will have a better idea after a few days of use. But so far so good! :good:
I just received and configured my Note 20 Ultra. It's so similiar to Note 10+ but faster. Software looks almost the same. I already have 1 software update with security patch from 1st of August
edit: what is annoying is that pen is from the other side it's inconviniet if you are using right hand to operate and hold your phon in your left hand
It's an incredible phone. So much smaller than my first mobile phone 35 years ago. How far we have come since Palm first put a PDA and mobile into the same unit. Luv, Luv, Luv.
PS. The Beans are wonderful. So nice to not have a bud sticking into my ear canal.
PPS. Now I have to wait all over again for my Tab S7+.

Lol, I remember those. My first phone was a brick phone with a battery that lasted an hour if you were lucky, and a hand calculator sized screen. Times have changed indeed. It's amazing.

I have waited on the Note series for a while. What finally took my commitment was finding out the s pen is on the left. As a lefty, this is the most convenient placement I can imagine.
Anticipate that the placement will change back to the right in the next iteration after feedback from rightys.
If the s-pen was on the right, it would be perfect. Fingerprint scanner is brilliant now, screen is unreal, battery life is phenomenal, speed is beyond belief... Perfection. Good luck topping this, Samsung

Can you elaborate further on the brightness? Everything I've read says the Note 20 Ultra has a brighter screen than the OnePlus 8 Pro, and the rated nits value is quite a bit higher. It might only go up to highest brightness in adaptive mode and being outside? IDK, but you're the first person I've seen say this.

This is the best way I have of describing my N20U screen brightness.
On a no cloud sunny day, I can take my phone out and see the screen perfectly. No more having to turn to use my body for shade and my hand to see the screen.
I am 69 with mild Adult onset Macular Degeneration. This phone is fantastic for me with auto brightness enabled.

Couldn't agree more. After owning note 2,3,4,7,8, and 9 with the pen on the right it will take some getting used to.
Battery life is also a bit meh coming from a Poco F2 Pro but it's good enough to get me to the end of the day so I can live with it.
Apart from those two factors I love this thing. Even at 60hz the screen is very bright and vibrant. It's very responsive, plenty quick enough for day to day tasks, and I've got the inferior Exynos model since that's all my country gets.
Camera is also beast. Low light isn't quite as good as my P30 Pro but it's still pretty impressive compared to a lot of smart phones out there. One thing it does have over the p30 is that it's much faster to grab focus so much better for quick snaps.

I've had Note 1, Note 3, S7, S10+ and now N20U from HK with Snapdragon. I've only had it two days, but I'm very happy with the phone. Big £ savings vs UK Exynos are icing and a cherry on top of the cake.
Having pre ordered the phone and having used Notes 3,4,7, 8 and now the 20 Utra 5G with 512gb internal storage; I wanted to wait to make a judgement call but I can say while there are things I like about the phone, I don't think it is what I expected and I am done with Samsung products.
I mean they have tried un-successfully to get rid of the micro sd card slot so then they go after the head phone jack. They skimp on the 120Hz display at full resolution. I mean there are a number of things for a flag ship $1549 phone that just say crap. I was interested in a watch and a tab s7 also. but that isn't going to happen.
I've owned a number of Samsung devices in the past, including Notes 8 and 9 as well as an S10e provided by my company. The Note 9 is, to me, an icon and the last no holds barred, everything but the kitchen sink, no compromises, Note. I do a lot of mobile photography and have always gravitated toward devices that had impressive camera/audio/video capabilities as well as feature-filled in other areas. I wanted to get my hands on the Note 20 Ultra but wasn't willing to relinquish my still pristine Note 9 for the pre-order trade in discount. So I waited for the software problems to get sorted out and the prices to come down. I regularly scanned the Offer Up and Swappa websites until I was able to a factory unlocked 512GB model from a good seller at a great price. This device is a juggernaut of power, form, function, features and fun. I found it not to be too much larger than my Note 9 which fits oh so nicely in hand in its Caseoloy Paraxell case. The camera and video set up is a mobile photographer's dream. I've utilized Google Pixel software apks (GCam) on all of my devices going back to my LG V20 and the stock cameras work so well that I have found no need to port one this time out. This is just overall a top notch piece of tech that does so many things and does them well. It is a quality, powerful, feature-filled piece of technology that will fulfill your needs, whether it's mobile photography, work productivity or content consumption/creation and everything in between. I'm glad I added it to my lineup.
Hardware is great ! With a few greed related exceptions, ( Like Non-Removable Battery, No Audio Port,etc... ) Scamsung's Locked Bluetooth codec really burns my ars !
It could Do/Be so much more/better if they would just fix the Hardware/Firmware lockdown BS.
Coming from a Rooted Note3, this is a really bad experience trying to do anything with this thing, Nothing works without agreeing to some sort of sketchy user agreement. No one is making any usable apps any more, Most of the Best Developers have quit bothering with Android. Even simple widgets don't even work anymore
I DO NOT OWN this over priced phone, They Do ! And they do/steal what ever they want to/from it !
They forced Assdroid 11 in the middle of the night with a corrupt image, I was forced to send it back to them to get it re-flashed. Now None of the apps I was using on version 10 will work on ver. 11.
I will NEVER buy another assdroid, scamsung again. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone either.
Sad that almost all the hardware/software makers are using these creepy/greedy tactics to spy,steal & dictate what you should do. No other choices out there any more ...

I think we pretty much knew this was inevitable, but I just noticed that Samsung just released this list today of Android 11 eligible devices. Unfortunately, it doesn't include the Galaxy Note 9.

What are we missing out on? So far, it looks like built-in screen recording, according to this Yahoo! article.
So basically, for us SM-N960u users, Android 10 with One UI 2.5 is essentially the end of the road, for us.
We have stock screen-recorder? Whay we need something from google? Screen recorder is there from from OneUi 2.0(android 10)
We have screen recorder already built in. We have the chat bubbles in a form via the pop up apps function. We can also resize pop up apps so the resizable picture in picture we also have of sorts. In Android 11 the screenshot doesn't have a notification in the panel which i find bad as in Android 10 i can take a screenshot, share it via some app and then simply delete it from the notification panel. In Android 11 you have to go to the gallery to delete a screenshot which you only needed to share, not save. Overall I'll be happy with Android 10 OneUI 2.5.
It's just getting close to the time where we're all gonna need to consider letting this phone go, that's all

I bought it 6 months ago and have no intention of changing it for the next 5 years lol
Also if someone so desires new android versions there will most likely be ports from the Note10 Lite as it's the same phone.

i bought my note 9 about the same time as you did and agree that this phone is still awesome as an 2-year-old phone.
however, 5 years is a very long time and technology changes a lot by days. so im doubt that you could (want to) use this Note9 even after like 3 more years.

Depending on what version of the phone you have there's no chance of ports. If it's not running exynos then customization isn't happening. Besides, 5 years is a disgustingly long time to hold onto any piece of technology outside of game systems and maybe computers/laptops.
The note 9 was/is a decent phone in it's own right but in today's time it's far outclassed by just about everything else. Removing old tech like headphone jacks and such doesn't make new things obsolete, technology is evolving and we're going into a true wireless era. It's not like you have to use Samsung's buds or anything. There's so many higher quality things out there.
Personally I just kinda don't like the idea of folks being so upset over not getting 3 major updates. The phone is old. Early adopters, late adopters. All have to just come to terms with it. It's not new, the tech looks dated in comparison to new devices. It's just the way it is
@yaibakt I had my S5 from early 2015 until early 2020 and it was not a Note + it was with a 32-bit CPU That's why it's no problem to keep the Note9 for at least as long for me. @KingVekxin 512GB/8GB Exynos 9810 here And I don't care that to some it's 'dated'. The uninterrupted display looks better than any type of notch or hole and there's no moving front pop-up camera. The removal of the jack isn't only about the more expensive wireless earbuds - it's yet another device to charge alongside your phone. But there are Type-C headphones so that's kinda ok (though you can't charge phone and listen at same time which you can do with the Note9). Also since I'm not rich or anything I won't change phones when mine becomes 'outdated' despite it serving its purpose perfectly (even better than newer phones with less useful features than it).
For my birthday in February I got a brand new PC as a present, then in March I bought the Ocean Blue 512GB/8GB Exynos Note9. Next step is saving for a car (so want the 2013 VW Golf, it's 8k euro here right now ).
PS: Not to mention that they removed the LED light as well which is extremely useful. Other removed stuff are the iris scanner, heart rate sensor, force touch home button and Bixby button (great as a mute switch) to name a few. And S Pen's and speaker's place is on the right side.
