Hello!
I have now even rooted my Nokia 8 with pie and put the hosts file in /etc/ but it does not work. Neither via wifi nor mobile. Only when I turn on my vpn ads are blocked.
Any ideas how this can be fixed? I use firefox 65.
Thanks
why not just use the host file module found in Magisk? or rather use Adaway. Both work perfectly fine on my Nokia 8
As I already stated, with my vpn it works! I want to know why it does not without and HOW to make it work as it is supposed to work. Thank you for help here... surely some more people must use a hosts file successfully with firefox and pie.
Wow, just installed MS Edge and with it the hosts file works. So it is clearly a firefox issue then. Anybody knows what setting it is in firefox to fix this???

I have Cyanogen Mod 4.2.15.1 and want to use OpenVPN on it since it seems OpenVPN is now completely integrated and works well. I already have my OpenVPN server setup and running perfectly, works great from my laptop.
I guess my question is WHERE do I put the configuration file? Everytime I try to add the VPN, the GUI can't find my configuration file and I have no idea where it is looking for it. I have tried the root of the sdcard and /sdcard/openvpn/ no luck. Please let me know where it looks for the file. Thank you!
+1
i need a solution for this problem
how can we use OpenVPN .
been wondering the same...
bump? is there a guide for how to use openvpn? specifically on CM6, but I'll take anything.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=551512
Open the Macket and install OpenVPN Settings, and put the confingure files to the folder /sdcard/openvpn. Then run OpenVPN Settings, and select one of your OpenVPN confingures to connect.
Is there another ad blocking app that you can use with being rooted? This one is just not working no matter what I do, and emails to the dev have gone unanswered.
NO, unless you block the servers tru a Firewall, you also have to be rooted for AdFree to work. if you are rooted, just download the hosts file and copy it to "/etc/hosts" via adb, root explorer or whatever you like to use.
Do you leave it zipped, or unzip it first before moving it?
edit: Thanks, but that did not work.
Are all ads showing up or just some? If it is just some then the adserver might be missing from the hosts file.
All of them are being shown. That's certainly why I was hoping to find an alternative app. I have been working with this since I rooted and nothing works.
Is there a way to filter or block ads in the apps ? In android is possible to mod a hosts file through apps such as AdAway or AdFree; has WP8 something similar ?

No !!!
You can edit the HOSTS file with an interop-unlocked phone. There's no current way to do it on a phone without interop-unlock, though.
Eye to change the host file First, as gooddaytodie says you need to interop and then enable full access to get full access to system folders. .. I have tried to edit the file to remove the ads from app but then I found myself with 3g and wifi not working.. So I thought I'd put the original file but are no longer able to replace it because Microsoft protected.. I had to Flash the full partition. Informed well before modifying it
It`s not the way with Windows Phone 8, but anyway. I`m using my router Netgear router to block the ads. Of cource it will work only when you`re connected to your Wi-Fi spot (or LAN with PC, Laptop or any other Ethernet-compatible thing).
I appreciate the information you gave me (and to the forum). A big thanks to GoodDayToDie who gave some hope and a "grosso grazie" to BlackSilverGT for the heads-up.
GoodDayToDie, could you please elaborate a bit your answer in order to avoid what happened to BlackSilverGT ? The alternative would the work-around suggested by winphoneuser
I have no explanation for what happened to @BlackSilverGT, so I can't promise how to avoid it. I used an app which moves files via CRpcComponent (rather than using the full access via MTP hack) but I have modified the HOSTS file that way, and it works. Maybe the problem was the *particular* modifications you made? I wasn't trying to block ads or anything like that, just intercepting traffic from an app. The tool I wrote for the purpose was a one-off and I seem to have deleted it, but I have a more general-purpose file editing utility under development.
Noticed i cannot get ssh tunnel to work for global or specific app proxys on any lollipop devices wondering if there was an ideal app you guys would recommend for nexus 6 that would accomplish this same thing?
Used to work great on my previous devices from last i recall prior to moving to a lollipop device
Looking to specifically proxy some apps via ssh tunnel and rest go through normal unencrypted session via carrier ip
Looked into proxydroid and connectbot but haven't seem to get them to work together must be missing something
seems this is a known issue with iptables and ssh proxying in lollipop on some other similiar apps
https://code.google.com/p/sshtunnel/issues/detail?id=193
Would gladly pay for an add free app that does this on lollipop for any devs out there looking for an app idea or can point me to one i missed which offers this
Thanks in advance
Update:
seen this after more searching looks handy gonna give it a ry but it would be nice to have an all in one app for this

I have posted a solution and modded apk for now, until the problem will be resolved. Check it out.
Try mine, uses autossh with openssh:
https://github.com/lbdroid/Android_SSH
https://github.com/lbdroid/Android-Binaries/blob/master/Android_SSH.apk
A few points;
1) requires root (at the moment, still in dev...)
2) still in dev (could be instabilities...)
3) no ads, no tracking... seriously.. no nonsense.

IT WORKS!!!
thank you very much.
Modded apk not working on Nexus 6 running Android 5.1.1
Using Connect not +ProxyDroid
Hopefully next release of sshtunnel will solve current issues
it´s the first time im using this tool... im happy that i found your solution/fix for lolipop.. it works perfect on any website/host in the web.. but i got still a problem..
the routing seems to route everything through the tunnel.. except things that are adressing other services on the same host as the ssh server host..
for example: if there is a webserver or mailaserver on the same host as the ssh server.. the traffic to those mail or webserver are not going through the tunnel..
is this a common problem with ssh-tunnel app?
using ProxyDroid on-top, fixes this.. with ProxyDroid also the mailserver (etc..) traffic is going through the tunnel.. but i would prefer to use only one tool.. not two tools..
any suggestions?
it's just a binary compatibility problem you can extract iptables and redsocks binary from patched version or from anywhere else and copy them to your data folder it will solve the problem

Yes you are right.
-1 copy/overwrite iptables, redsocks from proxydroid to:
data/data/org.sshtunnel folder.
-2 chmod these two files for the owner/root!

Hi everyone,
After rooting my pixel 4 on Android 10, I have difficulties to omae Netflix run
I tried to rename the file liboemcrypto.so from the folder system\lib but there was no such file, then I tried to use the magisk module to fix that, but it's not effective
I tried different versions of netflix (for android 5+) and they all return the error 13, while running in the background (I hear the sound of logo and I see the different users access) but as soon as I click on OK, the app closes.
Netflix for Android up to 4+ is working just fine though, but no functionality to download the files on the device
If anyone has an idea, would be great ! thanks everyone
