I have an A6+ 605g/DS and the new Android Pie update is available to me OTA. I REALLY want to update to it, but at the same time I want to be able to root in the future if I so desire. I haven't rooted because I don't want to have to wipe my phone by performing OEM Unlock, let alone flashing it.
If I take the update to Pie, will that prevent me from rooting in the future? Also, I haven't even taken the July 2018 update yet.. I've delayed it since October. I believe I'm still running the stock firmware that came installed.
Don't update! I did it and regret it! Awful, ugly, laggy, not handy at all! The new features are not worth it. Stay on oreo!

Hello, Gentlemen.
I bought a Note in early November and, being a fresh immigrant to the land of Android from Maemo, the first thing I did was install Titanium backup and clean out all of the Samsung bloatware. Stupidly, I uninstalled Kies in this way, and so have never been able to perform an OTA update. The updates download and apparently install, then the device restarts and tells me that the update has failed.
I hadn't bothered fixing it before now as the updates have been minor, but I want to get this fixed in time for the ICS release
How, then, will I reset my Note to factory condition and start anew? Is this even necessary?
if i'm not mistakes, once you phone is rooted you wont be able to update via kies.
happened to me on my Galaxy Tab 10.1, i'm unable to update from HC3.1 to HC3.2.
Just use custom rom instead.
Welcome to Android Mate, You've made the right choice.
Yeah, You can go back to Ground Zero Stock, Untouched. But That is not really necessary. All Stock ROMS get leaked or released anyway. But If you insist, You may Read the Guide here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997

You'll get ICS here at XDA at least a month before Samsung sees fit to grace you with OTA, so I wouldn't bother with Kies if I were you.
You're in better hands here.
I recently upgraded my phone to an AT&T S5 (I decided I didn't like the S6 specs). Currently, the phone is 100% stock, unrooted. I know that previous Samsung phones had problems with OTA updates when they were rooted. Now, with the possibility that the Lollipop OTA is coming soon, I'm hesitant to root until the OTA comes out. Here are my questions:
1. Should I wait to root until after the OTA hits the streets, or is there a strategy to root and still safely apply the OTA?
2. I don't want to be one of the first to get the OTA since it may be buggy. Is there a way to delay the OTA if I'm not rooted?
So, nobody has any thoughts about this?
I can't tell you what you should do but I can tell you what I would do. I would root now, load Titanium backup, and wait for 5.0 to come out. With TBU I freeze the OTA so it's not pushed without my permission. Additionally TBU will backup everything going forward so I can easily move up and restore my apps.
I believe the current process to root will work so be patient.

I wouldn't even take the OTA. Lots of issues with it. I am pretty sure LP will be the same.
I rooted mine, installed SafeStrap, and installed the XDK ROM, which eliminates all updates. My phone works great, does everything I want it to. Don't need problematic upgrades to downgrade my system.

Thanks to both of you for your suggestions. I think I'm going to go ahead and root and stay on the stock rom for a while. If the OTA shows up soon and looks worthwhile, I'll give it a try. Otherwise, I'll install SafeStrap and try a custom ROM.
Sure. Here's an easy answer: if you search for S5 AT&T and lolipop, you'll find lots of things that will say that AT&T will be taking its SWEET time putting an ota upgrade for lolipop out.
It is available from Samsung thru Kies, and I think I am personally going to take a new rom, and try and upgrade and unlock this piece of junque (and I upgraded from a Galaxy SII! )
Sigh
Currently the firmware is 5.0.2
What is the easiest and fastest way to get it to Nouget? Will it get OTA updates from AT&T even if I'm using it on Tmobile?
I've read some people went to Samsung experience store in Best Buy to get updates
I have ODIN and the USB drivers downloaded, just don't know the update path I need to take to make sure everything goes well.
Current ATT build in odin-able form is here.

It won't get OTA updates. The Samsung Experience Center in a Best Buy is a great resource--I do all my upgrades there, even monthly security updates. There is a bit of a lag between when an update goes public and when they can flash it for you, but it's quick and easy and you don't have to wipe your phone, if that's a factor for you.

I'll be using them for security updates but the link above gave me the ability to get the phone to 7.0 straight from 5.0.2
I doubt there will be any more OS updates for this phone so I'll just need to keep and eye on the security updates as they come.
I just got the update msg and i am afraid to update because if i do i may lose the Root and ect ha?!
I'm pretty sure you don't have the OneUI 2.5 update. Maybe the OneUI 2.1 but definitely not the 2.5 one. Even the S10/Note10 don't have it yet and we're after them. Also if you're rooted you shouldn't receive OTA updates at all. Can you attach a screenshot so it's clearer what you got?
This is what i got. May be it is or some security + software update
That was last months update.
The August update is ETH1
Ohh!!! Ok i thought it's the new one ??* if i update this i will lost root and may be boot loop?
I still think that if you're rooted you shouldn't have received this though. You sure you're rooted? Check with this app please just in case: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck
Yes. Rooted and using all rooted apps in here
I am currently rooted running stock A11. I noticed that the update to A12 is now available. Just for fun, I checked updates on my phone & it says there is an update for A12 available. I thought being rooted, with the boot-loader unlocked, I wouldn't get updates. But there it is, asking me to download it.
Would it work if I downloaded and installed it via OTA on my phone? Would it wipe all my data (internal storage) and un-root me? Would it brick me? Just asking because I thought the proper way to update while rooted was this way (step #4), but doing it via OTA doesn't get much easier.
I am currently happy with how my phone is set up and running. I don't have an urgent need to update and really dislike setting up a phone as new. Of course, if an update to new a new OS is available...I'm going to want to install it eventually.
Thanks for the advice!
I'm not going past Q on my stock N10+'s, one still running very well on Pie. It's load is over 1.5 years old.
The first thing I do on my stock phones is disable OTA Updates. I may eventually update the Pie one to Q but it's more restrictive than Pie. I gain some nice features and it runs a bit faster, but loose some functionality as well.
Security simply isn't an issue with Pie in everyday use. Q may prove more troublesome.
Going to R would break them. It's a mess. CPU cycle burning scoped storage and tard repetitive security permissions. All my apps are vetted and trusted, many wouldn't load on R. Some aren't replaceable like my free office app which I use a lot. Plus forced encryption on first boot up... trashware.
Trust 12 to be better? When pigs fly.
Rule #1, if your OS is running fast, stable and fulfilling its mission let it be.
At the best you'll waste a lot of time that wasn't worth the trouble and at the worst end worse off than before. I'm not buying the hype.

Yes, you can update via OTA.

The OTA preserves /data, but because it updates the boot image, you will lose root.

Why would an OTA update brick your device? The answer is no. However, due to Android Verified Boot features, you will need to disable both dm-verity and vbmeta verification in order to flash and boot a patched boot image. Unfortunately, this has required a data wipe to work. Those of us on the Pixel 5 are experiencing the same issue and are still working on the "why". If you leave /vbmeta and /boot stock, you can still temporarily boot a patched image....which just means that you'll lose root when you reboot.

Understandable. As I mentioned above, if you want to upgrade to Android 12 and have permanent root, it's likely that you will have to wipe. However, you can try following this guide and see if it works for you. Be warned, the user that posted that was on the 12 Beta, and had wiped previously when upgrading from Android 11. It won't cause a brick, but you may still have to wipe your device. If you're prepared to bite that bullet, you can give it a try.
Ultimately, you have 3 options:
Stay on Android 11 with root
Upgrade to Android 12, keep data, but lose root
Upgrade to Android 12, most likely wipe data, and reroot.

There is a certain degree of logic to this. I used Windows 7 and refused to update to 8.1 or 10 for a long time. Now that I'm on 10 Enterprise LTSC, I'm refusing to upgrade to 11. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
