Very quick question! - Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Questions & Answers

Mi Max 2 Android 7.1.1. NMF26F
unlocked bootloader | TWRP 3.2.3-0 + lazyflasher no verity opt encrypt | rooted with Magisk 18.1 |
currently on stock ROM MIUI Global Stable 9.6.3.0 (NDDMIFD)
Can I do dirty flash of (full) MIUI Global V10.2.1.0 NDDMIXM a0e82e598c_7.1.zip
by flashing it via TWRP (assuming Gapps are built in)
then flashing magisk to retain root
2 questions:
do I need flash lazyflasher again (I think not) + will I retain my data (I think yes)
Please, let me know if I am missing anything
Have read all the nooby stuff so just want to confirm. Very much appreciated!

1. Yes you can dirty flash but clean is always recommended whenever version changes. Always take backup in any case go wrong. Gapps are included in all global miui roms. After rom flash latest magisk.
2. No need to flash lazy flasher after magisk. Data will be there.

omnirom 8.1 how to install

It's been a year and a half since last time i had messed around with custom roms.
I am currently on stock 8.0 Oxygen OS. What would be the steps to install OmniROM 8.1?
I'm thinking the following.
1. unlock bootloader
2. Flash TWRP
3. Root
4. Wipe/format
5. flash OMNI rom 8.1?
Do I first need to update to 8.1 somehow?
You may want to update to the latest Open Beta firmware, which you can get the standalone files from here ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3t/how-to/firmware-beta-10-t3631166)
Flash this before flashing the ROM.
Also you may want to flash the Root method after flashing the ROM. Your best choice is Magisk, since it's getting ready updates and it has many extra features. SuperSU is old and not done by chainfire anymore, so don't flash SSU.
Also remember to wipe these specific partitions:
System
Data
Cache
Dalvik Cache.
I'm not sure by what you mean by "Updating to 8.1" as OOS is still on 8.0, even the Open Beta's. Flash the latest Firmware from Recovery and you should be good go.
Also, don't forget to grab NezorFlame's unofficial GAPPS, since OpenGAPPS still hasn't been updated to 8.1.
Also just keep in mind, unlocking your bootloader will wipe your internal storage. This is a security feature and cannot be bypassed.
IMO, there are better ROMs than Omni. You should try Z-Unleashed or Resurrection Remix 6.0.0. They're the best ROMs with the best customization and usage per user for now.
Good luck, and happy flashing!
You don't need to wipe data if you're going to unlock bootloader, since as mentioned earlier, unlocking BL deletes all of yor data.
Dalvik Cache isn't used anymore (we are on ART now), so no need to wipe it separately, it even reside in /data partition.
Also no need to flash firmware files if you're on OOS 5.
ROM, GApps and Magisk will be enough.

Well, most of the ROMs recommend Open Beta 22 firmware, since this is the FW the developers build the recently updated ROMs on. He may experience issues if he's on OOS 5.0 fw.

Just flash as usual.
- Wipe data, cache, system (dont forget to backup your important files)
- Flash MIUI
- Flash lazy flasher (optional)
Keep in mind
If you flash global beta version, it will replace your TWRP, you need to flash your recovery by fastboot whith pc.
China version, cannot replace your TWRP.
Hi,
with the xiaomi.eu rom, you won't loose your recovery. Just follow instructions told by @MattHdH :
- Wipe data, cache, system (dont forget to backup your important files)
- Flash MIUI
Reboot.
Done !

Any chance to root without wipe/delete/format data?

Hi everyone,
I really looked many websites and I think the answer is no but I still wonder if there is a way to root MI 8 with magisk from twrp without format the phone? I am running latest global stable rom with unlocked bootloader. I just want to root and install magisk for certified play store, netflix and adaway but setting and installing all apps again will take some time... As far as I know it was possible before as I did it at a MI 6 running miui 9.
Thanks in advance.
No
magisk, Boot Image Patching
YES! I finally figured out how to get root and keep encryption with Stock Global but you have to flash an alternate kernel first. You can keep your encryption without issues. I've been using this for a few weeks without issues now. The STOCK kernel has been the issue the whole time.
For Stock MIUI Global (Beta or Stable) Already Setup & Encrypted:
1.) Boot to TWRP Recovery (i'm using twrp-3.2.3-4)
2.) Flash Sphinx kernel (i'm on v2.5) You CANNOT keep ROOT while retaining encryption on a STOCK Kernel at this time!
3.) Flash Magisk (i'm using 18.0)
4.) Flash Disable_Dm-Verity ONLY! (DO NOT FLASH DM-VERITY with Encryption REMOVER or FEC in the filename or you will screw up your encryption!)
-I use this DM-Verity remover here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/universal-dm-verity-forceencrypt-t3817389
-you need to re-name the zip file with only "DM-Verity" in the filename without the ForceEncryption in the name before flashing! The filename determines/triggers what the zip disables!
DO NOT ERASE OR FORMAT ANYTHING!
Reboot and enjoy root while retaining encryption.
-You need to follow these steps on every new ROM flash!
-You can't do OTA updates, you need to flash new full ROMs!
Oh sorry I missed that he's already unlocked the bootloader

I can confirm this works, or at least in global ROM. I tried flashing Xiaomi.eu rom from global, but I couldn't boot it. I remember someone said that rom doesn't have encryption implemented.
Hey guys, do you know how to install global properly? I have installed the last one, but i can't change region it keep up on china region, and the baterry drain is bad. I used twrp recovery, but when i installed the global rom it doesn't work anymore, it started the miui recovery instead of custom. Help please
I installed magisk without a reset easily. Also im on stock kernel and my phone's encrypted ?
what is encryption for?`sry for maybe stupid question :x

Well your files will be encrypted so noone can access your files without the encryption password if the phone gets lost.

Hello, I'm running stock MIUI 10(global) on my Mi 8. It is already rooted. I was flashed DM-verify with encryption remover. Then rooted it.
Now I want to encrypt my phone without wiping data. I tried flashing Sphinx kernel then encrypt the phone but it failed. Should I reset my phone and setup again to encrypt the phone or it is possible to encrypt it without resetting?

Please help to install ROM in [Raphaelin]

Please help me. I can't seem to understand what exactly I need to do in order to install a custom ROM on my K20 Pro (Global 10.3.5.0.) I have tried following this (https://forum.xda-developers.com/k20...0-pro-t3953844) post thoroughly and others as well, but can't seem to exactly understand what I am required to do. Most custom ROM's state [Raphael], but as I purchased this device in India, it would most probably be [Raphaelin], after unlocking the Bootloader and installing TWRP, am I supposed to flash a Custom ROM (for ex. Lineage OS) directly or would I have to install a ROM which would make my device [Raphael]? Vendor and Firmware have gone over my head, I do not understand what I need to di. If someone could help me out, It would be mean a lot. Thank you.

If you're running stock MIUI and haven't moved to any custom MIUI's till date then you can straight away flash LOS. Moreover, most of the custom roms work on multiple vendors irrespective of whether it is a China Vendor or India or Global. It doesn't matter till the time the developer specifically asks you to be on a particular vendor.
Vendor isn't a dreaded thing. It's just the drivers needed to run the various components in the device (BT, WiFi etc). Till the time you don't wipe the vendor partion in twrp, you would always be good to go. You could carry on flashing custom roms w/o careing about the vendor.

Thank you very much for your reply. So, just to check if I have understood correctly. I can just install TWRP and then flash Lineage OS straight away, right? I checked (https://forum.xda-developers.com/k20-pro/development/rom-lineageos-16-0-t3965311), and it mentioned:
Instructions :
Download the latest build and GApps
Reboot to recovery
Flash proper vendor and firmware
Flash the latest build and GApps
Reboot
What is "proper vendor and firmware"? And would I also be required to flash this?
Thank you.

Go back to the Lineage instructions and read immediately below that. It starts P.S.
It explains exactly proper vendor and firmware means.
No you won't need to install anything for this step

Nope ! You don't need to flash vendor + firmware as you already running an untouched stock MIUI build. That is for people who are coming from either modified MIUI builds (EU, Miroom etc) or custom roms with a different vendor (India device running on China Vendor)
Custom roms don't carry the Vendor Firmware files and you can only modify the existing Vendor when you move to other region stock or custom MIUI roms.
Back up your data on Internal storage to a safe place either on a PC or OTG. Skip this step if you have nothing important.
Boot In TWRP
Wipe System, Data , Cache , Dalvik
(Don't reboot at this point, Not Even a Recovery reboot)
Flash LOS
Flash GApps
Go to Advanced Wipe and Format Data by typing Yes
Reboot

Did you do FORMAT Data (not just Wipe) when you installed your custom ROM, and before rebooting?

How to perform a clean flash?

Hi,
I have the Mi9T Pro (Global Version) and I am running a very old version of the 17.1 LOS build (from January I think). I now want to perform a clean flash to the latest version of LOS17.1 (I know 18 exists, but I want to stick with 17.1).
Can somebody explain me all steps I have to take and what tools to use to perform a clean flash of the latest LOS17.1 ROM incl. rooting it with Magisk and install microG?
I just want to make sure I don't miss a step and brick my device.

If you are still encrypted, remove lockscreen security first, then in TWRP perform a factory reset.
After this flash everything as normal. I don't use microG, so don't know the exact steps for that, but just follow the normal procedure.
You may need to flash a more recent vendor and firmware, before flashing LOS.
When finished add lockscreen security to restore encryption.
For clean flash,
1. Wipe major 4 partitions: system, data, cache, vendor (formatting data partition is optional)
2.Flash recommended vendor for Los
3. Flash rom (+gapps/microg if needed)
4. Boot rom (flash dfe if stuck at boot)
5. Go through initial setup and reboot to recovery to flash magisk
You shall be good to go.
