Google Voice to Text gets things WRONG, especially punctuation. - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I use Voice to Text a lot because it's just quicker for me.
Lately, like the past few months, I've noticed its getting words VERY wrong.
I'm American and I have no noticeable accent other than your standard live up north accent and like I said, it worked before.
My biggest pet peeves is that when I say "comma" instead of "," it ALWAYS gives me "oh,"... It just seems to randomly add the word "oh" in there now.
I remember something about voice to text learning speech, can you reset that crap?
I have to go back and correct like 3~5 words or punctuation marks in each message I send now depending on length.

Don't know much about that. But have you checked that your microphone is still good? That you use the right variation of English? Whether the offline language file is up to date?
I found those options in Settings->Google. But nothing about total reset.

handwriting recognition

I'm having a little trouble with this feature. MS Transcriber and I don't get along. I write using the italic method, which means that some letters are not recognised, ever.
e.g. the letter "e" is written like a "c" and then a line from the top right end is drawn down to approx midway into the left side.
I can't seem to train transcriber, so I'm wondering if any fellow Kaiser devotees can recommend something more intuitive, or at least customisable.
TIA

I had problems with my letter "a" - note how it is written there? That is how I print it as well and not the traditional small a that most people hand write - since it had issues - when I use transcriber I do what it recognizes. Not too hard to learn. i.e. - do what IT knows and don't try to make it learn what YOU know.

I do realise I could do that. However, I had to reteach myself how to write in a format that would be legible on paper. After going through that, everything I write is like practice still. I don't want to write differently. It's anti-progress.
So I'm still hoping to hear of other people's favourable results or recommendations.

Better Keyboard issue

Better Keyboard works fine per se, but I have issues with the dictionary. According to the creator, I should be able to add words to the dictionary and they should take precedence in the suggestions.
For example, I want to add Haha to the dictionary as it always suggests gaga instead. So I long click Haha and "saved" pops up, but the next time I put in Haha, gaga comes up again.
Anyone else have this issue or know how to get around it?
This doesn't happen for me in BK. Perhaps try uninstall/reinstall the app, and go Settings / Locale & Text / User Dict and make sure your words are in userdic as you expect them to be.
The issues lies in the fact that I have a Rogers Magic which for some dumb ****ing reason has no user dictionary. I have spoken with the creator of BK and we are trying to find a workaround. Apparently the Hero doesn't have a user dictionary either.

Keyboard layout... Anyone else do this?

Basically ever since I got my N5. The bigger screen kinda messes me up when I text or use the keyboard at all. Sometimes I use the swipe method to write on my phone, but other times I just do old fashioned button presses. When I text normally and I go to hit the space bar I will usually hit the period by accident. I'm pretty fast and don't usually look over my texts before I send them so my friends usually get text messages from me that look sometime like this;
"Hey.what are.you.doing today after work? You.wanna.go.grab.lunch at subway.or something?"
I never did it on my slide out phone obviously, or my gnex. This screen is just wide enough to make it happen for me. I'm still not used to having to reach so far right when trying to put in a period. Also I disable double tap space to enter punctuation. I find it annoying.
Not really a complaint or trying to vent at all. Just curious if I was the only one who did this as I have been called out on several occasions by multiple people as to why I replace my spaces with periods.
FYI I put this in general and not Q+A because it's not a serious issue that I need support for and I believe Q+A should be reserved for those kinds of posts.
I'm a big proponent of just using voice recognition for entering texts...sure, you can't always do it for discretionary purposes, not to mention sometimes it makes you look like a weirdo...
But now that the voice recognition is built into the phone it works so well.
Thanks for the reply. I only ever use that driving.
I leave it mounted on Google Now. That way I can say text so and so or navigate to, etc. When I'm not driving I usually just text normally or swipe.
I agree that voice to text works very well on this phone as well. Back on my Droid X it would never pick up my sentences correctly. I guess my bad luck with it previously helps account to why I don't use it much.
I also literally just noticed something about the keyboard I never realized. It's probably been around forever, though. When you want to input a number, you can long press the top row of keys to get that number or you can just press the symbols key and open the keypad with the numbers. That I knew. I just figured out you can press the symbols key and without picking up your finger, swipe somewhere on the keyboard and it switches to the symbols page. Release your finger on the desired key and bam. Number or symbol inputted and your back on the alphabet keys. This method is faster than the other two. Awesome.... And sorry for being so far behind.
I like the voice to text as well it works really good especially if you speak clearly. Sometime though, you don't have that option. That's where a different keyboard comes into play. There are soooo many in the play store. Have you tried one? Some are so customizable it's insane. Some to try out: perfect keyboard, smart keyboard, SwiftKey, swype, touchpal, thumb keyboard, and about 50 more

The screen on this device actually makes typing a fabulous experience. I rarely ever hit the "." unintentionally, and I rather enjoy typing again.
My last device had a 4.3 inch screen, and I would make this mistake all the time.

I have to say, it got easier for me. On my n4 I had the exact same problem. But the n5 has the perfect screen size for writing in my opinion.
It only rarely happens that there is a "b" or "n" instead of space.
But I really had to get used to in the beginning.

attached is an image of SwiftKey's 'compact mode'. it can be pushed to either side of the device and makes it easier to type with one hand on the bigger devices
This happens to me as well. It never happened on my nexus 4.

This is probably not the input you're looking for but it is a good habit to review what you typed before you send it. The recipients, and you, will appreciate it.
You should think about taking off some extra buttons (in Advanced settings) -- if you remove both the Voice Input button and the language toggle, the space bar is much bigger (making it an easier target).
This happens to me all the time on my old S2! However I've taken special care to stretch my thumb further, so I don't get that as much.
I use Smart Keyboard Pro and removed the comma button to lengthen the keyboard.
Maybe a solution for you is to use Smart Keyboard Pro, remove the fullstop button and add in the comma button (it's on the left) so your right thumb will hit the space button for sure. Only issue then is getting used to holding down the comma button for a fullstop

Predictive text / Swipe

I do not find smartphones to be as efficient as they could be. I hate typing on glass for one. And keyboard devices get treated with horrid internals.
But my Blackberry Classic propels forward. I go to use my note 4 and cringe. It's rich in all areas but input, Can't use swipe unless you have predictive text on and it constantly "auto" corrects my words and misspell and swipe is better but still not ideal.
either way I'm getting to a point I don't even want a "smart phone" anymore. If you disable predictive text you lose ability to swype......pathetic! I said **** not duck! Or is not on. Etc I hate auto correct I hate samsung I hate qualcomm I hate google I hate lollipops I hate milk chocolate (android m) I hate society...............

If you want to say **** instead of duck save it to the keyboard's dictionary.
Try Swiftkey. The prediction is very accurate, the only times it misses for me is when I mess up, overshooting or sloppy swiping. It's a learning prediction engine, so any 'mistakes' you believe it makes will quickly be fixed. I have used it so much that Swiftkey can pretty much predict entire sentences, with variations. Most of the time I just type the starting word, and Swiftkey magically gives 3 suggestions for the next word, which one of them is the correct one 95% of the time.
For 'custom' words that get changed to 'duck', all you have to do is set spacebar completion mode to 'always insert a space' (In advanced options). Once that is on, if you find a word that Swiftkey autocorrects incorrectly, all you have to do is manually type the word twice, completing the words with the spacebar. Swiftkey will learn the word and swiping will correctly use that word from then on, and even use it in suggestions.
Also, predictive text is kind of required in order to use swiping, otherwise I am sure you would quickly realize a lot of words would be hard to type, such as 'apple'.

Improving predictive text on stock keyboard?

I find that when I try to use the handwriting keyboard with the S-Pen, it frequently does not recognize names that I try to write. Unless I'm very deliberate with how I write each letter, it often either changes to random words, adds spaces that don't belong, or completely gets the name wrong and just lists random letters or symbols. This is especially the case when I try to write people's usernames, which are often neither common words or common names.
I would have thought that the keyboard would start to remember when I correct it with the proper spelling of names, but it's not getting the hint. Is there some other way to train or manually enter new words and get it to be recognized by the handwriting keyboard? I feel like I never had this trouble with my old Note 3...
