On every tablet/phone I have ever used when you press and hold power for power options menu you get restart and power off. Including the 2 new HD8 (2018) models I bought With fire tablet 7 (2017) though it only has a shutdown option. I can use restart from adb. Anyone found a way to customize this to have a restart option?

Ya if I'm gonna root it would be to go all the way to a new os. Not just to fix the power menu. But is the fire 7 (2017) bootable (soft)?

Yes, I have done 3 of them. It is really easy to open it and follow the directions. It is a full unlock though....

I would consider that a hard root (where you have to open up the hardware to root) as opposed to a soft root (purely software based). Also looks like Linux is a requirement. Don't have that. Thanks though

just trying to help. Many have done it with ubuntu live USB (booting to a live OS from a flash drive). The opening of the device is easy. I actually installed ubuntu on a old computer (dual boot) to do the script. From nothing to root/unlocked would take about 1-2 hours. it is far simpler than it sounds. Sorry i couldn't help you, the fireOS blocks so many options... You can always sideload a advanced boot menu app that might not require root?

Ya thanks for trying. May be something I do in the future. Just not looking to go that route...yet .
I did look through about 20-25 of them in Google play and they pretty much all need root.
If you stumble across one let me know.
With this post I was hoping it would be simple and someone found a way to side load the 2018 version of that component (wishful thinking I guess)

Even with root, the menu may only work on the older model fire 7s. On the HD 10, it requires a small single modification in the framework to activate it. However it does require root and I don't think many are staying on stock on the fire 7

Stock FireOS v5 is rather miserable, especially on low resource 7" gizmos. LIneage 12.1 significantly improves the experience and includes an enhanced power menu but does require root.
Stock FireOS v6 (Nougat based) is a different story but is only available on the 8th gen 2018 HD 8 as of this writing.

Ya stock 6 is on my 2 kids HD8(2018) tabs. But it comes with a restart option. It's just my 7(2017) that does not. Annoying to have to shutdown. Then manually start up. Not a deal breaker or enough to go hardware root it at this point (for me anyways).
I have already debloated and installed Google services.

Unless amazon activated global actions and added the option to the menu list, its not possible without root and modifying the framework.

Restart was not a standard Android power button option in Android 5 which FireOS v5 is based upon (although it could be enabled in custom ROMs or added via Xposed modules). Restart is 'standard' in Android 7.x (FireOS v6).

Even with an xposed module, the global actions menu wasn't activated so the module had no effect. Enabling the feature works and overrides Amazon's standard menu which you then have to install any module that hooks into the menu to literally customize it to any shape, color, size and add or remove any global action.

Good point for those remaining on FireOS v5. That said, there is absolutely no reason to do so once root has been secured on a Fire 7" 5th/7th gen.

Can you modify the framework-res.apk using AdvancedApkTool to activate it.
Edit the configuration values in res/values/integers.xml using Notepad++ or Windows Notepad.
Code:

2. Power off (with confirmation)

Yes the Play Storewold probably be the number one reason everyone roots. There are thousands of apps and a lot of them are free!! Unlike the sorry Amazon store. There are many other things you can do when you root as well, such as: speed your kindle up, change to a different ROM, custimize basically everything and the list goes on and on and on.. you get the point. You better just make sure you do your research and then research some more.. it really helps with understanding this hole root thing.. here's a great link that someone provided to me when I first started and I bricked my device..http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552547:good::good:

If you read that LINK I posted it tells you that it is very very hard to totally brick your device which is true, TRUST ME lol. I have change a lot on my Fire and have been in a few "brick" situations, but you take a deep breath and figure things out. Aptoide is great but some of the apps won't work unless you change the permission settings and therefore you need to be rooted...

slg1986,
This is a great question, I had to take a moment and put in our 1 cent.
Why should I leave the Kindle Stock:
Pros -
1. The Kindle will remain stable since you are unable to perform any modifications
2. You get custom Ads based on your purchasing behavior - some people do like this feature
3. Restoring is very easy from a Factory Reset
4. No need to buy backup software, the Kindle is Backup to the Amazon Cloud
5. You received full Amazon Support
6. Warranty remain valid no chance of invalidating the warranty
7. Everything is integrated, no need to spend time customizing
Cons -
1. You are stuck with the Factory Carousel
2. You can not customize the Kindle
3. You can not choose an Alternative Video Provider
4. You can not choose an alternative Book Provider
5. You are stuck with ads whether you like them or not
6. You are stuck with Amazon Apps Store so most Apps cost you $$
7. No custom Launcher
8. No way to sync Ubuntu One MP3's
9. Much more.......
Why should I Root The Kindle -
Pros
1. Fairly Easy to Root
2. You can change the Lock Screen
3. You can change the Wallpaper to Anything you like
4. You can eliminate the Kindle Carousel
5. You can change the Icons to match you mood
6. You can sync you Apple iTunes to the Kindle
7. You can install Flash Support
8. You can view YouTube
9. You can use the Google Apps
10. You can install Movie players like MX Player and VLC
11. You can create on the Kindle
12. Very hard to damage the Kindle and Brick it
13. You can install a wide array of Internet Browsers
14. You can change the Camera App
15. You can install Graphic Editing Software
16. Soon there will be a wide array of custom ROM's available
17. You can remove the Amazon Garbage that slows the Kindle down
18. You can add tweaks like Persano Tweaks
19. Much More.............
Cons
1. You can void your Warranty if not careful
2. Some people find Rooting the Kindle Difficult
3. That is all I can think of at the moment.................
At the moment, are there any custom roms being developed for the Kindle Fire HD 7"?

obscurehaven,
Yes, there are a number of developers working on different projects, by Mid 2013 we will see a few CM10 ROM's, AOSP ROM, Ubuntu ROM and a few others I am sure. Development is going slow due to some backend issues around the Kindle HD 7".
The Kindle Fire 2 has a solid CM10 ROM already developed and another person is working on a AOSP ROM, I am sure there is more.
The Kindle Fire 8.9" has a solid developer working on CM10 and another working on AOSP. Again, I am sure there are other developers.
These are the one I know about, there are plenty I do not know about, more to come..............:good:
Hey guys!
For anyone who wants to try out the new Ubuntu Touch dual-boot, here's how (if your device isn't supported yet):
1. Download and install the attached apk.
2. Edit your build.prop (I recommend using an build.prop editor from the Play Store, but you can also do it manually)
Change the three original lines to look like this:
ro.product.model=Nexus 4
ro.product.device=mako
ro.product.manufacturer=LGE
3. Reboot into Ubuntu Touch!
Notes: A regular boot will boot your device into android, and you will have to reboot into Ubuntu Touch from within the installer app.
You will not be able to boot into recovery without uninstalling Ubuntu Touch.
Your backups may or may not be deleted when uninstalling Ubuntu Touch.
Warning: I own an Optimus G, very similar to the Nexus 4. As devices vary, so will compatibility. There are no promises that it will work well for all devices and I take no responsibility if something goes wrong, though I'm willing to help out if it does.
Edit: Feel free to try on your device, but will work best/only on Nexus 4/Optimus G variants

Yes superuser is working fine. It seems to be some sort of a problem due to storage formated differently than Nexus 4?

Try this:
1. (In the app) Options > Delete Download
2. Try to download again, but this time, allow SuperUser access forever.
It could be possible that after a certain amount of time, SU is not giving the app root user permissions anymore. This could cause what you're experiencing.
Already did that since some users reported same error (nexus 4 users) but with no success. using SuperSU like other that had problems.. maybe i should try another superuser app

If you mean that it will not reboot in general, that sounds pretty bad.
If you mean that it won't reboot into Ubuntu Touch, try rebooting into recovery.

GSM services do not work for me, but that only makes sense considering that the version of UT that is installed with the app is for Nexus devices.
The only 'workaround' so to speak would be to have Ubuntu Touch built for your device.
Unless someone chooses to do so, all we can do is play around with the partially functional OS.
By the way, the Nexus 4 was based off the Optimus G, and that's probably one of the main reasons it even installs properly.

Hi,
I bought the first version of the Kindle Fire HD (7"). I like to root it for using Google Play Store on it.
I have red, that it is possible to root the KF and to use all the prime features (videos and e-books) without any restriction.
Is this still right? Which custom ROMs support the prime features, too? (Kinology?)
Thank you!

Kinology should work as it's based on the Kindle rom, but i am not 100% sure as i never tried kinology. However Cm11 rom works for books games and music but not prime video. I just watch prime videos on my laptop. Cm11 has the android 4.4.4 and overall i think it's really good.

Yes you can do a factory reset. This will unroot your device and get rid of all the media (apps, music etc) and settings will turn back to normal.
However doing this you WON'T renew your warranty. But the benefits are clearing cache!
To reset your device got to : Settings - Device - Reset to Factory Defaults Then there should be a pop up and it will ask if you are sure.
If you want reset click "YES".

Yes I know, but I bought a used one, so there is only a few time of warranty left...
Btw., is it possible to reset the device to the manufacturer settings, if I do not use a custom rom (only root)? (I have red about unroot, but nothing about reset)

If your stock root then leave WiFi on and Amazon will push an OTA update out and your tablet will update.

Thank you for the information! Is it possible to force the OTA update?
The Google Play Store updated some apps, unfortunately the amazon music app, too.
Now it doesn´t work and I need a way to get the original one (either as apk or from reinstall). The factory reset does not help

Problem is solved! I downloaded the firmware from the amazon page, added the extension ".zip", opened it and took the amazonmp3_unsigned.apk from system/app folder, copied it to my kindle fire HD and replaced the apk on it.
Now all works like expected

Thank you. I was on happymiui 5.1 and was finally able to revert back to 5.0 by doing the fastboot flash method. THe other methods stil kept the 5.1 baseband and I couldn't get any network connection.
We need to start compiling a list of good xposed modules! Been waiting for months to get xposed. First ones I am using are Amplify and GravityBox

hello,
i used the xposed module "app settings" version 1.13 with android marshmallow before i updated to nougat. this module enables you to change DPI, font scale, locale, force fullscreen, persist in memory, etc. on a per app basis.
here is a link to the module:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xp...2014-05-14-t2437377/post63835421#post63835421
i have not found any possibility to get this working on nougat as there is no xposed for nougat and it seems there is no more custom rom with these options.
is it possible to get this module working with magisk?

Downgrade to marshmallow or write xposed for nougat. The first is easy, the second will make many people happy over here.

Just to clarify on the above response: No.
Thanks Op, I also would love to have App Settings equivalent on Magisk or stand alone. Turns my 6.44" Mi Max into a desktop chrome browser almost

It would be just ultra hard to code that, or just impossible.
years ago (before xposed got famous) some custom roms (paranoid,...) had these functions.
i would go back to marshmallow only because of this missing features but there is no marshmallow rom for my new oneplus 5.
is it really impossible to get it working with magisk? the code itself (version 1.13) worked without any problems on marshmallow.

You'll need to manually edit files and apps and Magic Mount them with Magisk. Alternatively you could possibly do some things with some cumbersome scripts. Magisk can't change code of running apps, just replace/add already modified files and run scripts at boot.
In other words: No, IMO it's not worth the extreme hassle and you won't get the same thing as you would with Xposed.

thanks for your answer!
do you have more information about these "cumbersome scripts"? maybe it would work with tasker and a script per app.
i would be very happy...i like my smartphone much more with these features.

I wasn't gonna open up that can o' worms, but since you brought it up...
Look up how to work with shell scripts. Tasker can run those (among other things). You could probably do some stuff with the resetprop tool as well (look here for details and syntax).
Don't expect miracles though...
