The N5 has let me down

Last weekend I went on a bit of a trip visiting 2 cities and was expecting to use the N5 as GPS (navigating trough the cities), camera and media player. I am sorry to report that it failed miserably..
First was the camera : all was well until i got the "cannot connect to camera" dialog and had to reset the phone missing the moment to be captured. If it were a one time event I could have over looked it but it happened about 5 times in 3 days. I didn't use HDR or other camera apps, just the stock camera taking normal photos/videos.
Secondly, (related to the camera) the mm-qcamera daemon drained my battery like crazy so i was always charging the phone and took a survival attitude towards it (2g, no data, no wifi, minimum brightness) negating it's smartphone capabilities as much as possible.
Lastly, and most infuriating, the GPS just didn't work. I had an internet connection (chrome and facebook worked just fine) but it just wouldn't load the map nevermind driving/walking directions.
To top all this, my friends Galaxy Ysomething with gingerbread performed flawlessly all of the above. Needless to say that after this none of the group will ever consider a N5 as their phone.
Sorry for the vent/rant but it can't be all roses..

Wow... All of those points to a defective unit.

the camera hogging battery has been confirmed by google and will be fixed in the next update
i have no issues with GPS or the camera and I take about 5-20 pictures every day. maybe you can try using a custom rom or maybe you have a defective unit. i would contact google for a return if you are able to

Just flash a custom rom. Bet all your issues are gone.

Not sure I experienced any issues.. but mind you, once I opened the box, turned it on and rooted the phone and installed a custom rom... lol...

considering i have never experienced the camera issue once since me and my wife have owned the phone, his experience is a isolated one.
1 of 2 things happened to cause his issue:
1) hardware failure, which is beyond anyone's control
2) he modded his phone and broke something, which can be fixed by going back to stock (or should be anyways)

I would return it in a heartbeat! That is unacceptable for any device and those are each large enough issues to cause concern. I have been an android fan since I first held one some years ago. Every effort towards modding in the past has been to attain a pure stock, nexus-like experience. I purchased to N5 to stop chasing that dragon and honestly...it has been somewhat disappointing. Constant drain from com.chrome.sanbox, camera daemon running constantly and horrible audio. I have rooted and flashed away many things, but always at the expense of stability or another feature that I favored. Google needs to get their sh1t together. This is a great device, no doubt, but there are too many little problems that en up adding to a major PIA considering that this phone comes straight from the folks who makes the OS that we all love. I understand your frustrations OP, that is unacceptable. I would return it, like others have stated. That's too crap going wrong on a singular trip to be considered just a glitch. I love my N5, but it is ridiculous to overlook glaring flaws simply because it's a Nexus.

GPS should work very great though. I drain maybe 10 percent in an hour with it running, and it locks in less than a second for me...

What a coincidence that his camera, battery drain and GPS issue occur all around the same time. You maybe right about the software issue but I was replying with the assumption that the OP is running stock..so my bad. However, I've got a bad GPS reception, it barely connects and I've tried on both stock and custom kernels. I can't RMA or service it through warranty since I got it from abroad.

well, I've had my Nexus 5 for a few months, and I use it constantly. The camera has never given me a single issue, and neither has the GPS. I use the GPS quite frequently, as I recently moved to a new province, and don't know the area.
I've also used my Nexus 5 while traveling(between Alberta, Canada and Nova Scotia, Canada with many stopovers in between) and not one issue.
I can't speak for stock, as I flashed CM11 the moment I got my phone, but I use what's listed in my signature. I highly recommend those. A few times, there's been issues with the Chaos kernel, but not for several months now.
I'd definitely say give custom roms a try. But if that doesn't fix it, revert to stock and return the phone right away if possible.

I found the phone simply excellent when I was traveling around London, GPS camera and battery all good.

I also had the exact same problems with battery and camera on my tablet and phone untill I uninstalled Skype.

Never had problems with gps though.

Unable to RMA it since a friend of a friend bought it for me from Germany (I am from Romania). I just uninstalled Skype and will keep an eye on the camera. For the GPS problem I have no clue since not even network location is working in maps... I have weather apps and they figure my location just fine.
I am running stock unlocked with twrp. I will try out some roms eventually..
Will my local lg vendor be able to do something about a defective phone ?
Edit : back home (i was out during my last reply) maps is working perfectly (even without GPS, after data clear and force stop, wifi off). It's like the phone is shy of new places...

This should be were greenify helps. Any apps that suck battery, mess up other apps or abuse the memory can be hibernated, and only woken when we want to use them.

The last time I saw the "cannot connect to camera" message was on my Xperia Play, which had a faulty connection with the front facing camera. I've never once seen it on my Nexus 5. That one definitely points to a faulty unit.
Camera battery drain, apparently this is a known issue, although I personally haven't experienced any issues.
GPS issues...I don't ever 100% rely on any GPS device..way too much room for error. That said, I used the GPS on my N5 last week to pinpoint my location on the map to help me find the house I was delivering to. Worked as smoothly as it could. Maps was open, I turned on GPS, boom, the blue dot told me where I was, good times were had by all.

I agree. While I understand their frustrations, it is pretty dumb to say that no one in the group will ever buy a Nexus 5 because of one phone had issues. Umm, ok? Does any phone from any manufacturer have a 100% fault free track record? I'll save you the google, the answer is no.

I also have n5 since it was released, rooted and on stock with latest updates since 3/18/2014. I had note 2 before and I gotta say I miss it. For 2 main reasons, multi function and battery. I think I will sell this with next note release. Yes you get latest updates but when you are rooted I'd rather not have the latest updates.

The battery drain comes from a very real bug concerning how Skype interfaces with your device's camera. Google has even come out and said it's a major problem (after doing their own internal stress test and finding it to be a real bug). Don't let anyone fool you into thinking that specific part (the GPS and Camera malfunction, I cannot speak to) is just your device. People with stock Android and people on custom ROMs have also been experiencing it. I run Carbon and it still happens to me. That's why I keep Skype frozen or Greenified (a better solution) unless I need it. Of course, that's a pretty bad workaround, especially if you pay for Skype calling or need to be online for messaging.
I hope it works out for you. Also, I can't quite claim to know for sure, but the warranty is not tied to the original purchaser, it's tied to the serial number on the device. My brother purchased two Nexus 5s (to ensure we both got one) and before I could do my first RMA, I had to ask them to swap the Google account over to my Google account.
That was it. I don't know how the warranty system works in Romania or Germany, but don't rule it out yet!
EDIT: To follow up with the warranty process, it should not matter what country you are currently in, the warranty will follow the laws set down by the country of purchase. If you do need to do an RMA, they will ship you a new one (overnight if needed) and ask that you ship them back the old phone within x number of days or else you'll be charged full retail.
If you have questions about this, please don't hesitate to ask. Everyone deserves to have a great phone.

Will look into RMA-ing it since i have a first batch (ordered 2 weeks after launch) and some complain of poor audio on their side.. The problem is that i cannot access the device playstore from my country..

The camera issue could be caused by insufficient ram at the time of operation. U sound like u wanted to do a lot of things with it on ur trip, it could've possibly ran out of ram at the time and thus couldn't load the camera. I had the exact same problem with my galaxy s3, clearing apps with an app manager fixed the problem (I used system panel). However the n5 handles ram extremely well, never have I once been Over 1.2gb used and I use it vigorously with no ram or task manager app. Kit Kat is just awesome.

3 MAJOR things stopping me from buying the Note 4

I am undecided on this device or the Nexus 6. However, I was leaning more towards the T-Mobile Note 4 for use on AT&T. I have been reading through these forums, along with the AT&T Note 4 forums. The three major issues I have been reading on are:
1. Screen uniformity issues (apparently common among AMOLED panels) Many have complained about a pink tint or residue on certain portions of the screen when viewing whites. Others have also complained that certain sections of the screen are cooler and have more of a blue tint. I have read very few actually state they got perfect screens. These AMOLED issues seem to be more prevalent in the Black Galaxy Note 4s (the color I wanted, too). I have also noted that some are complaining about graininess in their displays. Why does one of the "best" displays on the market suffer from these issues?
2. Headphone output? Its been no secret that almost every Samsung Galaxy flagship had very low volume, but apparently the Note 4 takes it to a new level. The volume with headphones plugged in, when using the stock music app is so low, it apparently is half the volume of the iPhone 5S. THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM. I understand about volume mods and roms, but not everyone has time to mess around with that. I also refuse to carry around an iPhone and Note 4 just to get a good listening experience.
3. LAG? Apparently Samsung's TW is still lagging and stuttering just like its predecessors before it. Of course with the Note 4, "its not bad, and much improved", yet still there. When launching apps there are noticeable delays. Using the hangouts app produces quite a bit of stutter, and using the multitasking view.
I believe if anyone is going to drop $750+ dollars on a phone, they should not have to spend time "fixing" the above issues. I really hope that I am WRONG about these issues, because honestly, there really isn't much more to choose from when it comes to phones this year. The Nexus 6 display is lacking, and so is battery life. What's left? iPhone 6 Plus? Nah.

That's what I wanted to hear. No iPhone for me, nope not no way, not no how. I will not overpay for a limited device like that.

Yep got mine on preorder never had an issue with screen, if stock is bad no reason to mod download powerapp which is one of the best music players, go to settings and put outpt to the highest and promise to impress, and literally just downloading nova will get rid of most if an lag. Youll be fine and appreciate the phone more.

After reading the thread on the display issues, I was quite worried. It seemed rare to get a perfect display. Of course I am sure majority of people do not have perfect displays and just don't notice it. This is why I prefer IPS panels instead of AMOLED.

No problems with the phone from me. Screen is perfect, volume is plenty loud (way louder than any iPhone), lag is a non issue.
This phone does everything and does them ask well. I do have a custom ROM on it, which make a difference. If you want to buy a phone and leave it stock you should look at a nexus 6 a Motorola X or an iPhone. This phone is way better rooted with a custom ROM.

Well rooting and flashing roms can be an amazing thing. It's just that I did that before with my S3 and S4 and I was always changing roms, never keeping anything lol. It also got annoying have to re-setup everything all the time when updates came. I think you could get into trouble by dirty flashing.
How is your signal reception? Do you use T-Mobile? How is the GPS accuracy?

From what I've seen personally and heard from reading it almost seems that the black n4's are more likely to have display issues........Racist !

With all your complaint, either go buy an iphone or go buy a nexus device because 3rd party manufacturers are not for you lol. feels like im back on the lg g3 forum all over again with posts like this...that should tell you something....complaints are UNIVERSAL until you buy the damn thing

Well if I could gather some respective opinions first before going out and spending $750+ then I'd rather go that route. Not too mention, if the phone does not work out for me, I'd have to pay T-Mobile a $50 restocking fee. So excuse me for using a "forum" the way it was designed.
Third party manufactures are not a bad thing, however, after using the S3 & S4, I have noticed a slow down or lag when it shouldn't be there, given the specs. I have read various reports of the Note 4 doing the same thing, so I figured I'd ask.

Using Tmobile Note 4 on AT&T. I get full LTE everywhere. I actually get faster speeds than the AT&T model on AT&T got.
Have absolutely NO GPS issues. I don't know where that complaint came from, I leave my location settings on this phone to "Device only" which means it doesn't use the WiFi or cell signal to locate me at all and have still never had any issues.
With the device on "high accuracy" it locates you instantly.
Not to mention the battery life on this thing is absolutely insane.

Thank you for your opinion. Can I ask when you bought the T-Mobile phone if you had service through them? I am reading that before the device is unlocked it first must be activated and used on its original carrier.

Lol, see it how you will im just stating the hard cold fact on the matter.
Point im trying to make is that EVERY single manufacturer will have the issue you just stated, thats the plain cold fact. Heck, even Nexus is having the complaints you are currently having.
Its a lottery my friend. If you are one of the unlucky ones you will end up with the unlucky device. If you want to nit pick at everything, you will end up with an unlucky device because you will always see something wrong.

The phone is great, it does not lag the way you are making it sound. I got zero screen issue and I'm satisfy with the sound of it...ITS LOUD. Unless you want your ears to bleed, the Note 4 is not for you. You want to use it as a boombox...the note 4 is not for you. It is smooth for what we KNOW to expect from samsung. They got so many things on here that needs to load and given the time they do and the tweaks I have on my phone, I'm satisfy and will forgive it. If you can't forgive it, than go grab an iphone or a nexus. We can bash on iphone all we want but their optimization is brilliant! They and google do so damn good job at it and make every other phone look like crap next to them (...nexus that is, im giving too much credit to icrap here lmao!) as far as "lag" is concern.
Also to make another note, most of the lag complain you see also deals with google apps. For some odd reason the only phone google apps (especially hangout) work flawlessly on are nexus devices, any other you will see lag. Nave samsung apps are FAR SUPERIOR in smoothness next to hangout. Using it make my phone feel like a cheap second rated phone

I appreciate that. You are right about every manufacturer having its issues. When I tried the iPhone 6 plus, it lagged too. But not as bad as my previous experience with Samsung devices. Perhaps "lag" isn't the right word. I guess the right word would be stutter. I always found the animations to be a tad jerky on Samsung devices, despite awesome specs. Hopefully its as improved as everyone here is making it out to be.
Its a shame though they don't make the headphone volume go louder. :/

Well considering best buy has them to demo and so does TMOBILE. I say hit the stores and you decide. So many threads about the phone not being perfect. Also every phone cost 500 plus so it not that big anymore. A smartphone comes with a smart phone price. U need to see for your self. I love it my boy hates it. It your money you need to go and see.

The only thing with going to Best Buy and T-Mobile is that they have demo versions running on the phone, which can slow everything down.

Honestly, you should just buy a note 4. Nothing else now or in the near future compares.
My headphones are too loud. If there is such a thing.
Screen is what everyone I show the phone notices. In a good drooling/jealous way.
I've never had a phone with less lag.

AT&T Galaxy S6 Delayed Notifications

I'm currently rocking a galaxy s6, but I'm having a lot of delayed notifications issues with it. (i.e I receive a text message or gmail email but don't actually get notified until I open the app or like 2 hours later). I've tried factory resetting the phone, att support, google support, and Samsung support. I also tired messing around with the battery optimization, syncing interval for gmail, and a few other things but I cannot get it to fix the issue. Thus, I'm hoping someone here has an idea of what else there is to try or if all else fails, phone recommendations. Though, I'd rather try to fix the issues rather than buy a new phone.
In terms of phones, normally, I would probably go with the s8, but I'm having second thoughts on this phone because of my s6 issues. I was also considering a oneplus 5. What do you guys think?

I went from s6 to Moto z Play, and very happy. I'm definitely staying away from carrier branded / locked down phones from here on out (I like having the option to unlock/root, even though I'm still bone stock locked with the MZP).
I had also considered the OP3T at the time. If I were in your shoes, I'd go OnePlus 5.

Nice. One of my friends has the Moto z Play and he loves it. Says the battery life is fantastic too. When did you make the switch from the s6 to the moto and how much did you pay for it?

Switched the very end of last year. Paid $350 outright through republic wireless, and got 6 months of service from them for free (I had to pay $2.xx a month for taxes) with unlimited call and text, and 1gb high speed data. It was a great chance to try another carrier (obviously I have ATT since I'm here). I carried both plans - republic is great, but they use T-Mobile network, which sucks a lot of places I go, so I always carried both Sims. I use gvoice for all calls, so doing numbers didn't impact people calling me. I do typically use considerably more than 1gb a month of data as well, and the bigger data bucket republic plans aren't much cheaper than my part of a 3 line 15gb plan on ATT.
Phone itself is a huge improvement over the S6. It has taken somewhat of a hit in battery life as it's upgraded from Marshmallow to Nougat. Originally I was easily seeing 8+ hour screen on times in a day, out I could go 36 hours off charger with maybe 5h SoT. Since the upgrades it's gotten a little worse - probably 6h SoT in a day. Some people say a factory reset will restore the old battery life - if I get time to set the phone back up I might try this, but I still have never killed it in a single day, and can count on one hand the number of times I've ever plugged it in before going to bed. Performance for any of the apps I use is on par or better than the s6. It's not quite as blazingly fast as the 800 series chipped flagships, but in normal use it's not noticable to me.
Only downside is the camera. It's probably ok in terms of competition at this price point, but it is a significant, almost always noticable downgrade from the S6. This bothers me a little more than I thought it would (I knew it wasn't a great camera going in) and I will be giving a good camera more priority in my next phone purchase.

Awesome! Thank you very much for the review, it's really helpful. For me, probably the most important aspects of a phone are:
1. Reliability in terms of calls, texts, notifications, etc
2. Battery
3. Camera
4. Performance
5. All the other neat tricks and features (fingerprint sensor, water resistant/proof, etc)
I really did like my galaxy s6 until it stopped reliably being a phone. I don't know what the issue is but I can't seem to fix it so I guess I need a new phone. Though, everything else is still working great (with the exception of the battery, but that's expected from a 2 year phone).
I'm really tempted to get the oneplus 5, but at $500 it's on the fence for me. Also, I can get a s8 for around that price and the s8 seems to be a better phone overall, but... I really don't want to go with Samsung again and risk the delayed notifications.

No notification issues for me on MZP.
I was skeptical of the "long touch on FP sensor to turn off screen" feature I was reading about when doing research, but now I think it is complete genius from Moto. I almost never touch the power button. Every phone should have this feature, I'm not sure id be willing to go without it. And the MZP fingerprint sensor is TONs better than the s6

Anyone considering the V30?

I'm curious if anyone is considering moving to the V30? The better screen and newer processor does intrigue me.

1. Well the first major issue is that I can't get this phone to connect to a 5ghz network, I know others can but for some reason my phone cannot (see screenshot). it finds them, but "disabled" them when I try to connected (yes I am using the right password to connect). The 2.4 connects, but I get random drops in connection all of the time at differing intervals.
2. I get dropped calls all of the time, even when I am in an area with full service and sometimes when I am on a call I can hear the other people fine, but they can't hear me at all. I had to disable VoLTE because the calls 'sounded' good but everything was digitized and half of the time everything was scrambled and unable to understand them.
3. Camera - I am still not quite sure why many are comparing this camera to the Galaxy S8 or Iphone. The pictures that I take with this phone are abysmal. The night photos are grainy and the day photos look great on this screen, but as soon as I look at them with a larger screen they are unfocused and unclear. I get it, I can switch to manual mode and mess around with the settings to make the pictures "phenomenal" as I have been told, but that takes time, and by the time that I have the right settings for a good picture, my wife's S8 could have taken 10 pictures that look so much better than this camera can take. (yes I have wiped the lens off, it is clean and I am using the LG camera program).
4. Battery: I had this phone since may, and I am lucky to get 12 hours on a charge (from 100% to 20%) with light duty usage. I know that is subjective and is affected by what programs that you use and how much you use the phone throughout the day, but on the Galaxy S6 Plus that I had, after a year I was still getting 18-24 hours on similar usage with the battery.
I know that I keep referring back to Samsung Phones for my examples, but that is the comparison that I have to this phone. I have used Sammy phones for the past 4 years and, personally, I wanted to switch to LG to get off of the Sammy phones because I am not a Samsung fanboy. They have their issues and those issues were big enough to cause me to switch to LG for this phone.
I have taken the phone back to the store and, of course, everything 'magically' works when I am there, so they won't touch it or replace it. Thus, I am dropping this phone as soon as I humanly can.
Thanks and I hope that you don't have the same issues that I have, as it seems people either love or hate this phone and unfortunately I hate it.

I've had mine replaced twice for dropping calls, so bad that the radio icons would literally disappear and reappear, dropping the call or WiFi.

I was thinking about ordering a G6 today, but after reading about the V30 think that it may be the way to go. A lot of what made me reconsider was in this forum, and how much the G6 is restricted by TMo. I have a rooted LG G4 which has been fine after being fixed for the bootloop problem. I've just been bitter about having to put lineage on it.

Yes! I'm planning on returning one of my G6's via JUMP! and upgrading to a v30. Probably within the next month. I'm waiting for a good promotion and a few paychecks. But definitely getting one to use side by side with my paid off G6 & LineageOS G4.

I second this question. It'll probably be even more locked down than the G6, if thats possible.

I also ask the same question (despite wanting to dump the g6), to me it is the assumption that the fixed the problems that plagued the G6. Or it is just because i don't like the g6 enough that I hope that phone is better in 'any' way at this point.

I find that my G6 tends to lag a lot. I'm afraid the V30 will also since it has the same 4GB of memory.

I saw that as well. I also saw some reviews that despite the phone being very well made, the screen is junk? Anyone see or hear the same issue?

Not a chance in hell.
Worst phone experience I've had in years.
Camera glass cracked from what I can only conclude is expansion and not enough tolerance in the design to have a water resistant phone. I'm not alone in this issue by any means, LG refused to acknowledge it, instead screwing customers over for overpriced repairs. I appreciate that some users are rough with their devices and likely caused the damage but I baby my phones and this was not user caused in my case and no doubt many others.
Removing the ability to access root is a deal breaker for me. It's not that the phone isn't nice to use, and I don't need a bunch of niche apps.
It's quite simply that being locked down is IMO a deliberate move between TMobile and LG to limit any version upgrades that lengthen the life of a device and cannibalizes their 'jump' programs and phone purchases in general. This is evidenced by the fact that it's still on the very base 7.0 version of Android Nougat (no interest in giving customers the important Google incremental updates).
Oreo having been out for months, I doubt this phone will see it.
I tend to keep phone's longer than a year, my previous Nexus 5 was nearly 4 years old when I got the G6, and had I kept it, would be running Oreo right now instead of Nougat!

YMMV - but you did ask for user opinions! That means the good and the bad.

I wanted the V30, and was waiting to get one but needed to add a line in late august for one of my kids so I got a pair of G6's for $500 on a bogo. Honestly, this might be the best phone I've had to date. I get great battery life, the camera is great, and the performance is great. I disable everything I can that I don't use and its been fine. Plenty of storage for me.
So with all that said, I just don't see there being enough of an upgrade in the V30. The quad dac will not do much for me because I stream my music from spotify. While the camera may be an upgrade, I'm not sure its $550 better after I use my jump. Screen is a little bigger and I think the minor gains in battery life will be negligible. Plus, the screen issues I'm hearing about on both the V30 and Pixel XL 2 have me thinking I'm just fine staying on the G6 with its LCD screen for a few more months.
Bottom line, I don't think its a huge upgrade for me especially when I factor in the cost. I'll be Jump eligible by next spring, May use it on the G7 or wait for the V40.

I was excited for the V30, but I read the LED screen is not great. Some say its good, others says it's terrible. Everyone agrees it's not as good as Samsung's LED screens. I own several Samsung LED devices, so I'll probably notice the difference. Maybe the later batches of the V30 (2018 build dates) will be better. The later batches of the G5 and G6 fixed some of the imperfections of the first batches.

I'm looking into getting this phone, but wanted actual owners inputs on the phone.
I bought a g5 plus on black friday at bestbuy, and used it for about a week and a half. I has issues with calls were cutting out, as if I had dropped call, but if I waited long enough, the call would resume fine, but the other side could not here me and eventually hung up without waiting long enough. This is a known issue on lenovo forums, as others have the same issue with the g5 plus.
I'd like people with say a month or better to chime in on this if you would.
I've watched numerous videos on the 5s plus and read thru countless reviews on it as well, and the biggest complaint seems to be with the camera and the depth feature, both of which have terrible lag time and wait time.
I've also sifted thru lenova forums to see if there are any issues, and the only other issue that I would call major is the screen cracked when it was not dropped or anything, was due to an alarm, although I'm not sure how that would happen.
That being said, has anyone encountered any issue, that I would call deal breakers, like voice calls, wifi dopping, slow hotspot or cell data, etc....
I'm not an avid big user of the camera, so I'm what you'd call a casual point-n-shoot person, so the camera is a low priority on my list when it comes to phones, as I don't do much with selfies or picture taking.
What I do want in a phone is good working voice and data, hotspot, and fingerprint scanner. I could even get past a buggy or glitchy fingerprint scanner even.
I've had some really bad bad bad experiences with phones as of late. I bought that g5 plus and had the voice call issues, which was not a carrier thing it was the phone, as my nexus 5x and oneplus 3 do not suffer from it. Now I have a oneplus 3, and although I love the phone, but it seems that I cannot upgrade my os at all, past 7.1.1, due to I get drastically slow data speeds. I won't go into a lot of detail on that, just in short anything past 7.1.1 android it happens, data speeds get cut near in 1/2. I'm in contact with 1+ and hope dearly that they can find a fix to this, but I am still shopping as I don't hold much stock in they will actually find a fix and more sluff it off, especially given they no longer support the phone at all.
My poor nexus 5x is suffering from bad battery life, more-so than before , and has some slow downs now, and stuttering at some points. I'm guessing it's on it's way out, this is why I was shopping for another phone and I got the 5 plus, but had issues, and now this oneplus 3 issue.
So as for looking and researching, it seems like the g5s plus doesn't suffer from the issues the g5 plus has, so it seems like it would be a good choice.
So I'm hoping those who actually have the phone and use it on a daily basis can chime in and tell me what the pros and cons are, what you like and/or don't like, aside from the obvious camera issues.

I never faced any issue with Fingerprint, call, Wi-Fi. The only issue that's particularly bothering me is that most call recorder apps don't work (except Boldbeast recorder which is doing fine as of now).
My phone fell from 6 feet height once and landed flat on the screen. I thought it'd have shattered by some miracle (or the chinese tampered glass), even the protector didn't get any scratch except like 3 mm of it got chipped off one of its corners.
So, it's quite a sturdy one. Moreover, the camera quality has been improved significantly after the updates. Now, there's almost 0 shutter lag clicking the normal pics and almost half a second to 1 second lag to click in Depth mode or HDR mode.
However, I still think one plus3 is still a much better option than this one. You may also have a look at Xiaomi A1.

For the money, it's a great device. Had it for 3 months, used on gsm (att) and cdma (Verizon) no issues with calls. Since camera isn't am issue for ya, I'll say it takes pictures, certainly not the best pictures, but it works - but what would ya expect for a $300 or less phone. Low light is where it really struggles (as expected). Rom development isn't the greatest, is a relatively new device, hoping that gets better but what is available is good enough for daily drivers at least. And custom roms are 64 bit, not 32 like stock which does give a noticeable performance bump. Battery life is great - better than my 6p when it was new, and better than my n5 when it was new. Games, if that's your thing, run fine. I tried some racing sims for fun and no problems (I was actually impressed by how they ran). The all metal construction feels solid, really solid. I've never used a case or screen protector (it lives in my back pocket), dropped it from about 4 feet one day on to a hard tile floor, not a mark in it. I'll also say the finger print gestures are great. No need for the nav bar, which makes the screen almost the exact same size as the 6p (at my age bigger is definitely better!). The sd625 has enough power to run everything smoothly, with the benefit of being very power efficient. Ruining 64 bit os, performance is almost as good as my 6p (before the big cores died) - sorting and adding formula to a spreadsheet with 100k to 150k rows takes a few seconds, but barely longer than the fully working 6p.
This is a good bang for your buck device. I'd recommend it, and have to a few people who are getting it now.

It has its Pros and Cons, but it's really the first Android device I've had that I haven't immediately thought about my next phone. It's fast enough, smoother than my wife's iphone 7 at least..Everything is a little better than average except camera performance. Camera is "meh" as others have pointed out, and there have been times where I was frustrated trying to take decent photos over the holidays.
*Really wish it had NFC for Android Pay
*If you can afford it, get the 4GB RAM version. Using the camera causes most apps to close out of memory for some reason on my 3GB model. Sent bug requests and they say it is due to RAM management.
In the $200-$300 price range, I think it's either this phone or the Honor 7x. Honor has a better Camera, but has EMUI

Looking on Swappa.com, I was seeing OnePlus 3T's in the $300-$350 range, which if you ask me, looks like a better phone...Not as "new", but Snapdragon 821, 6 GB of RAM, I think they're already on Oreo too...

Coming from the oneplus 3 and having slow data issues, and this is not just a little, this is at least 1/2.....24Mbps before the update to Oreo, down to 8-10Mbps after. That unexceptible in any terms. I've been in contact with 1+ and after 5 emails, still no fix in sight.
I don't feel like repeating the same thing all over.
This data issue is rampant on the one plus 3. Do a search on "oneplus 3 slow speed after android update". Tons of people having the issue. This has haunted these phones since 2016.
Not everyone has it, some do, but I'm not willing to take that chance again.

Did some testing on my hotspot today on the 1+3, so I wanna ask, is anyone here with a g5s plus, using tmobile service and hotspot? can you test your hotspot speeds and let me know what you get.
I have a suspicion tmobile is limiting non-branded tmobile phones ie: a phone that's unlocked, and not bought from tmobile store or tmobile.
Both my 5x and 1+3 have the issues of slow hotspot, but when I went to a tmobile store today, inserted my sim card in a tmobile branded phone and tested hotspot on my 5x and 1+3, I got good speeds, 24-50Mbps, but when I put the sim in the 5x or the 1+3, both suffer from bad slow hotspot speeds 1-3Mbps, while cell data on the phone is fine.
If they are indeed blocking or limiting non-tmobile branded phones, then even the g5s plus will suffer from slow hotspot as well.
Last update:
I finally did some more tesitng today, and found that the 1+3 has what I think is hardware issues with hotdpot. I placed my sim into my 5x phone and now things are fine, so it's not a tmobile issues or blocking non tmobile phones, as my 5x is still non tmobile, but it works fine.
I'm going to chalk it up as the 1+3 has bad hardware or flawed hardware of some sort that affects bad hotspot.
I'm going to order the g5s Plus this coming friday so I am looking forward to getting this phone.

Lol. It wouldn't. I read that a lot about the xperia z3 too. People drop phones and struggle to admit "i was clumsy and dropped my glass phone and it cracked".
I have the g5s plus and it's great. The camera isn't very good, and sometimes apps crash, usually at the point they're loaded/switched back to, and sometimes an app I'm not using will tell me it's crashed but other than that it's very stable. I've had no random reboots. Battery life is great. I had the z3 before for about 3 years and the screen just failed while I was holding it. I just can't be bothered with expensive phones any more so I got the g5s plus expecting it to be a step down from the z3 but it is better in every respect except for the camera (awesome on the z3, average on the g5s plus) and the magnetic charger (z3 has, g5s plus has the old fashioned usb only and i'm always worried it's going to die one day). If I lost this phone I'd buy another one to replace it without thinking about it. I considered the oneplus 5 initially but it's twice as expensive and the camera isn't very good on that one either so i wasn't sure where the extra £250 I'd need to pay would be going (I paid £260 in the uk for my g5s plus).

My own opinion, coming from a Note 4..... Camera isnt good. Other than that, this is a spectacular phone, running rooted stock only. Catch it on sale and cant beat it.

Use it as my work phone, great battery life and very smooth. Here in the UK I can't get volte or WiFi calling which is a little annoying.. Motorola don't release updates like they used to either, they are much slower.
That's not too say is a bad phone though, I really like it.

Phone is really good for a normal user. I'm using this for more than a week now. It works well. I get 2 days battery backup. This is the best phone available at this price for the hardware specification.

My 2 cents , is this I had a Nexus 6 p and then an Essential , the Nexus was great but it had a terrible battery issue, the screen wasnt very good, i actually had two of them the first one died within a week, then aftrr 2 years i got the Essential , what a beautiful phone , very elegant, barely drop it , crack, still nice, but there is a terrible camera. The calks dropped because the cellular software and radio is messed up , the side screen s have touch issues , theres a lot of little things
The G5S+ , i bought because it was rated high for midlevel phone and to be quite honest , its lightbthan both previous phones, better call quality , vetter battery life, this phone wont be any other phone on any test , but it will always rate in the middle of the pack, it has not let me down at all, feels good in the hand , great touch , everything about it is mediocre , but thats ok, because it rocks, its my go to daily driver , it was sim unlocked when i bought it, bl unlocked after 5 minutes adb , havent rooted or twrped it yet , nit enough time, but its worth the money
