Hi,
This is an known fact that Xiaomi does not implement fully compatible carrier aggregation for European mobile networks.
In EU, users of mi 8, mi mix 2, redmi pro,... Reported they cannot use 4g+ due to impossible inter carrier aggregation combinations ( eg b3+b7).
Is mi 9 the first Xiaomi device that allows correct full 2CA or 3 CA for European market ?
Does somebody already test it ?
Is it still the same situation ? Which means we have no possibility to have fully working 4g+ outside China and India ?
On the EEA version, you've got at least 4G+ and 3CA.
Sorry for the big images, but it's not likely anyone else will reply anyway.
On those images, you can see up to 3CA on bands 1/7/20, 2CA on 1/7 or 7/20 or 3/7.

Can I ask what app you are using to test 2ca and 3ca. This looks handy and I am having an issue with getting LTE+. I have the Chinese variant, and am currently downloading the global rom to install on it and see if LTE+ starts working.

Thank you for your answer.
So, can we assume the mi 9 is the first Xiaomi device fully operational in EU ?
Xiaomi has always been shady (to say the least) concerning Carrier Aggregation.

Did you have the possibility to check if the mi 9 can correctly aggregate b3/b7 and b3/b20?
I'm from Belgium and the 3 operators use mostly b3/b20 and sometimes b3/b7. It should be very similar in Netherlands.

I still have to wait another 100+ hour for my unlock, so I cannot show you the details (need root), but I'm pretty sure the 3ca is working, as I got my carrier's full 225 Mbps speed at some locations (as in: real-life performance) including the 4G+ and VoLTE icons too.
EDIT: 225Mbps could still be 2CA technically, so I dug a bit deeper into the (official Dutch) specs:
4G: LTE FDD: B1 / 2/3/4/5/7/8/12/20/28; LTE TDD: B38 / B39 / B40
3G: WCDMA: B1 / B2 / B4 / B5 / B8; TDSCDMA: B34 / B39; CDMA EVDO BC0
2G: GSM: B2 / B3 / B5 / B8; CDMA 1X: BC0
And 4x4 MIMO | HPUE | HO RxD
Please also note that I do still need to do the *#*#4636#*#* trick to set the modem to LTE/WCDMA on each reboot to prevent Cell Standby drain and reception issues on my official global ROM (10.2.9.0); can't wait for the unlock waiting-period to be over ...
PS: I believe the Cell Drain to be caused (at least partially) by not only searching for those unused frequencies in Europe by default, but also when it actually finds a working legacy 2G or 3G frequency, it desperately tries to keep that connection alive in standby-/sleep-modus instead of using higher speed 3G and 4G frequencies to try & save battery, but because legacy frequency towers are very sparse and far between in my country (they're even talking about killing 3G off in a few years already), it actually drains the battery way more than simply using that stellar 4G signal from the brandnew tower just a few hundred meters away.

There is an old application called 4G LTE Switch that does this number for you and is very lightweight. You can also set a contact tho.
It still doesn't force LTE on reboot, I don't know ANY application that does this. And you shouldn't, because sometimes, rebooting a phone in a car while driving because you have an urgent call to make in a 2G environment and GSM won't activate is enough distraction.

It's a shame and quite disrespectful for European consumers that Xiaomi does not configure and set the mobile properly according to the country they are selling.
Even if you dig the internet, there are no datas nor proofs that mi 9 can correctly aggregate carriers outside China.
And as all predecessors were unable to do it, we have to rely on good willing people here on XDA.
I can confirm that mi 9 is the first phone from xiaomi that support 4.5G in my country (b3+b7)

You can also click one of the menu's in the About Device screen (kinda like Developer Tools) as well to access the menu, or use the MiAppa app (which even gives access to some ROM settings that are still fully in Chinese). I did add it as a contact too, but dialing the contact with the built-in dialer doesn't work and by now I can dream that number anyway I noticed more system-related settings the MIUI ROM resets/overrides when rebooting.
I can confirm too. It works fine

And were you able to verify (network signal guru or other with root) if you were able to aggregate b3/b20 and b3/7; or even 3 CA b3/b7/b20 ?

I am interested in a 8gb version but its not the global version, have been speaking to this Chinese ebay seller he says he's gonna unlock the bootloader flash a global rom on it and than it will be compatible with UK networks for 4g LTE use, the 6gb ram global is compatible I have used it, works perfect, my question is will the 8gb Chinese be able to work like global 6gb version after the global rom flash? thanks in advance guys, cheers.

Hi everybody,
My Xperia TL only connects to the 2G network. When I do a service providers search, it finds my carrier 3G network (and also other carriers) but it fails to register on it. I only get service when I choose the option to only use 2G.
I tested my SIM card with another phone and there was no problem. I tested a different SIM on my phone and the problem persisted. I tried turning airplane mode on and off, forced a reboot, did a factory reset, but the problem is still there.
I purchased this phone in the US but I live in Brazil. My carrier LTE frequency is different from AT&T, so the fastest I can go is 3G. I have been using this phone for more than 1 year without problems.
Is there anything that can be done?
Thanks!

Hi, I have exacly the same problem. I searched for a solution with no success. I even tried to reconect antena inside. Now i'm tring to unlock the bootloader to use custom firmware. If it fails, that will be information, that it is rather hardware than software problem (but it is strange - EDGE over GSM works fine).

Here's all you need to know about hardware specifications:
3G Network
HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 - LT30p
HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100 - LT30at
HSDPA 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 - LT30a
4G Network
Nothing... - LT30p
LTE 700 MHz Class 17 / 1700 / 2100 - LT30at

The international model is LT30p.
You've got a LT30at and, as you can see, 900-1700 bands are missing.
Check which ones your network operator works with.
Keep in mind that you can't change or add these bands, because they're specific of your hardware!
Check all your country operators, maybe you can find a solution.
Mine is LT30p, so should support all bands (at least if shows that info). I bought it from Singapure, and it could be a fake, because I have a problem with unlocking bootloader using code from Sony. Flashing with original Sony firmware works, also OTA updates. Strange.

I would flash a baseband only for the same version LT30a. You'd get more bands, and, hopefully, a fix, it it's something baseband related.

so I'm sure that all bands required are enabled. But still can't get signal for WCDMA (or LTE) . In my case it could be or APN related or hardware failure. Now I'm trying to figure out where xperia stores working APN configuration.

Settings, More,Mobile networks, Access Point Names.
This issue is not APN related.
A missing or wrong APN doesn't allow data transfer only. In fact, in this case you can have signal and make calls or send/receive SMS.

Am on Vodafone Ireland. Phone purchased direct from carrier.
VF Ireland released this in early November, I think. It wasn't up until the December Pixel update that 5G actually started working and, until this point, Google had 5G support for the network down as pending on their support page (since updated). So far so useless from Vodafone.

The thing is, I'm not actually sure they've (being Vodafone) correctly enabled 5G for the device with Google. I understand that speeds can be spotty but a speed test when on (what the Pixel reports as) 5G are identical to those performed on LTE.
So, I have the Pixel displaying 5G in the status bar but NR frequency in *#*#3646#*#* is showing UNKNOWN (not sure if expected), Data Network Type is LTE (again, potentially expected?) and speeds are identical to 4G (I know there's a chance this is just the cell I'm connecting to, but little opportunity to test otherwise at the moment).
I'm not rooted; is there an app or website that will give me a cast-iron, low-level look at what type of connection is actually being made? Or any other thoughts?
Many thanks!
When you're on 5G go to settings -> about phone -> sim status, mobile data network type should be NR NSA
Which is sort of a hybrid between 4G and 5G where you (supposedly) get 5G speeds but not all the other 5G features.
5G SA isn't really rolled out many places yet and I don't think the pixels support it if it was
Yeah, it is NR NSA. Certain speed/performance test apps are identifying the connection as LTE, though, which is why I was looking for something that I knew could be relied upon to give an unequivocal read (if such a thing can be done).
I can't help but be suspicious that VF have messed this up somehow and whilst the phone is identifying a 5G signal, it's not actually what's being used.
This may or may not help.
If you go to settings, network & internet, advanced, adaptive connectivity and turn it off then the phone wont use 4G if it thinks that is all you need when a 5G signal is present.
Have had that turned off since update, thank you, though
I note that if I manaully try to connect to a network, I am shown as connected to a 4G one, where the network "3" have a distinct 5G one. Anyone on Vodafone IE (whether a Pixel 5 or otherwise) able to confirm if they see a distinct 5G network for Vodafone, if they try the same?

NR Status: NOT_RESTRICTED = not connected to a 5G cell, but not restricted from doing so either. It will say "CONNECTED" when actually connected.
NR Frequency may not work properly. On an old patch it erroneously reported "HIGH" for T-Mobile USA which means it thought I was on 5G in the 3-6GHz range which is not possible for my carrier. On a new patch it now just says Unknown always.
"5G" shows in the status bar because many carriers want their phones to show the icon when you are connected to a tower that "supports" 5G NSA connections - which effectively means there could be a 5G cell somewhere in the vicinity.
I use CellMapper as a quick way to look at the NR Status (AKA 5G State). If you're connected to a 5G cell it will also list a NR NSA item near the top, or say LTE-A+NR NSA.
That's very informative, thank you!
So, if I'm seeing the attached with CellMapper, I'm on a 4G cell but there is a separate 5G cell for my network available?
Should note as well that I am now seeing CONNECTED for NR Status but am still not getting anything above 4G region speeds.

I'm actually kind of confused by the screenshot. My Pixel 4a 5G has never shown a "NR" item, and you're missing the all the 5G info on the LTE line. However, I know the 4a 5G is not compatible with my carriers 5G Standalone yet. I wonder if you are on Standalone? I would suggest opening CellMapper then when you see the info like in this screenshot, go to Settings>Send Debug Info and use the email option. The devs might be able to figure out what's going on. Send them a screenshot of the main app window, too.
Re: speeds...it depends. I can sometimes get faster and more consistent speeds when I disable 5G. But that's because one of the main 5G bands for me is only 15*15mhz wide, and there are some modem limitations when aggregating in a 5G band with LTE (NSA mode). For me, I have to find the mid-band 5G cells (N41) that have 60mhz of bandwidth to see a bigger difference. And then there's mmWave which is the ultra fast 5G but very limited range.
Thanks once again. Going to throw it up on the CellMapper Reddit first, I think. See if they can interpret it for me.
normal behavior for 5g. right now it's basically LTE speeds with a layer of instability on top.
mmWave is never going to happen. we just have to wait until 5g (sub-6) is stable and speeds improve.
personally, I've disabled 5g on my device. not worth it.

Hmmmm.....maybe where you live. Here in Canada I get about 60/70mbps download speeds on LTE. When I get a 5g connection the speeds can go up to over 200mbps
@xunholyx That is insane speed. You know where I can cross the border?
I am on Verizon prepaid and live in a rural area. I bought upgraded 5G Sim from Verizon for the Pixel 5. I have the low speed 5G coverage that Verizon calls nationwide. It's really a glorified 4g lte that is often slower than lte. Phone shows 5g at the signal bar and setting show NR . BUT speed test app and opensignal app shows that I am actually getting lte signal and speed when testing. I have found out that in my yard standing away from power lines I get 4g lte speed and signal but if the phone is held higher I connect to the tower with 5g protocol and speed test reflects it with double to triple bandwidth.result page of speed test and opensignal show 5g connection.

Issue is it's not really 5g but LTE or 4g, how I came to this conclusion was by running various apps/ simultaneous 5g speed tests on both this phone and an older Huawei phone I got..
Mi 11 ultra caps at 140+- dl speeds
Huawei caps at 500+- dl speeds
Provider runs 5g on band n78 which is supported by both phones..
Can running the Eu ROM fix this issue for me?

n78 is 3.5 GHz 5G band (is wiiide band, is not a 600hz band lmao) Your phone preferred to stay connected to 5G bands more than 4G bands.
Try to switch to 4G network preferred
And check it out your actual speed on 4G
(Huawei supports more bands than xiaomi...due to different processor which is Kirin)

Hello everyone,
I've just upgrade my plan to have 5G support, but the phone does't pick it up ( the carrier says it's ok )..
I also searched manually for networks and I find every network even from other provider but NOT a single one with 5G.
obviously I am in a 5G area, center of Milan, and sim slot 1 ( but I recall that was dual 5G, no? )
It's a bug, broken or I played with some setting disabling 5G?
thanks
EDIT: SEEMS LIKE THAT switching preferred types, airplane mode, while outdoor made the phone to connect t o a 5G antenna...

If you have the chinese model (not EU or global) you might have some 5G band limitations, and it's also to be taken into consideration which bands your operator is using in your area.
So, I just got the Global version and am on T-mobile. Does anyone know how to activate HD voice(Volte) as the following codes done seem to work on this phone.
VoLTE *#*#86583#*#*
VoWIFI *#*#869434#*#*
Also, the charger only goes to 66 watt charging. I assume because of the voltage difference in the U.S.? Any thought or suggestions are appreciated.
Hey man, I just got the Chinese version (model PFEM10) and I can't seem to enable VoLTE or VoWiFi as well. I am on MetroPCS (basically T-Mobile) and when plugging in my SIM card I don't get any 4G connectivity whatsoever. I ordered the phone from AliExpress, and it came factory sealed in the box with plastic wrapping and all so I know it wasn't tampered with or anything like that. I don't know where I went wrong because the Chinese version of the Oppo Find X5 Pro supports 5/6 4G bands for MetroPCS/T-Mobile. And the codes you listed for VoLTE and VoWiFi also don't work for me, the phone app just goes back to the blank state after typing in the last asterisk (*).
Can confirm on the 66 watt charging, I have the 80w SuperVOOC brick and it definitely doesn't do 80W, limited to 66.
Do you get any mobile data on T-Mobile with the international version? I'm so bummed, there is very little information about this phone online and I thought that purchasing the China version for use on a GSM network in the USA would be fine because it supports 80% of the 4G bands...any ideas?

I actually answered in your other thread. lol
But I believe the CN version doesn't work from the IME numbers I was entering when I was looking for the phone. The global version showed fully compatible even though I don't get 5g.. Also, in the T-Mobile app, it shows as a Oneplus 7 Pro which is ironic because my son has that phone and his shows as a Pixel 4.

I was so naive to think that if the network bands matched up, I would be good to go, because I have thought for the longest time that was all that required if the phone was unlocked and you were switching over to a GSM network. I will definitely have to use and tell other people about IMEI compatibility in the future, because I just went through two weeks of hell waiting for this phone to come from Hong Kong and then learning that it won't even work lol

Yeah, that sucks because it's not like it's an easy phone to exchange.
Hey bro,
I ended up reselling the CN version I imported and bought the UK/EU/Global model (CPH2305) instead. Works fine on Metro, get strong 4G just about everywhere. Seems like a recent firmware update enabled 5G (VoNR) as well, but it only has 1 compatible band. I think the battery will drain less on 4G so I just disabled the 5G. Talked to countless reps about VoLTE and WiFi calling but still haven't gotten anywhere with the global model. I'd love to know if it's a software issue...

Glad you were able to sort that out with the Global version. Interesting.. Which update was it? Color OS or something else. My current Color OS version is A17. I don't see any 5g settings yet. My Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra has the same 5g band and I was getting great coverage in my area so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for 5g to be enabled on my X5.
I'm on A17 as well I believe (CPH2305_11_A.17). The thing is, the update didn't enable 5G the way you think it would. The only reason I found out is because I was playing around in the developer settings (check attachment) and found 'VoNR calls' as a new setting.

But there's more. When you enable this function, 5g won't work out of the box. You can try to go to SIM settings and change the network type but it will still say '4g/3g/2g (auto)' with no option to include 5g. So here's what I did. Go to the play store and install an app called 'network mode (universal)' by JunHyung Lee (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ljh.networkmode). Open it and find the list that's called 'set preferred network type'. I think the default is GSM/WCDMA/LTE (PRL).
I changed it to NR/LTE/GSM/WCDMA. after doing that and rebooting I got 5g on my X5 Pro.

Good to know. I am assuming this is N41? Do you have the net monster app or similar to see what band/s you are connected to and the carrier aggregation? How are the speeds?

I owe you many beers Sir, worked like a charm. I actually saw those settings for VONR in the developer settings. I didn't know about the app but I was trying to access those settings through the phone codes but they don't seem to work on Oppo phones. 5g is working well now. Thanks!
Double post deleted.

it must be N41.
Thanks for your suggestion of using NetMonster to see that band usage etc. The speeds are roughly similar to 4G, maybe a little slower seeing as I don't have as much coverage going off one 5g band vs. multiple 4g bands (2/4/12/etc).
It seems as though even though I can enable VoNR (5G) in the developer settings, I think the signal indicator in the status bar is telling a lie. I don't think it's really 5G. I changed my connection state from GSM/WCDMA/LTE (PRL) to NR/WCDMA/LTE/GSM as I detailed in my previous post and then ran NetMonster.
Here's what it looks like on 4G. everything normal:
And here's what it looks like on '5G':
I could click on the part that says 'Disconnected', and NetMonster shows the following:
So I think it's still 4G despite saying 5G. Not sure what this means as there are many possibilities. Let me know what you guys think as I don't really know where to go from here. Disabled VoNR for now and just using plain ol' 4G.
When I run Speedtest, it definitely shows 5g connected and I've seen speeds up to 180mb/s. If I run it when it shows 4g, LTE shows up in Speedtest so it's definitely connecting to 5g when it's available. The VoNR setting in Developers seems to have no impact either way.
And on 4g.
Now that I'm on Color OS 13, Volte and Vowifi are now active and working. IMS is now registered and I get 4G and 4G+. No 5G but I'm okay with that.
