Root on Stock Pie (T-de) with some debloat problems - Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Questions & Answers

Hello there
last night i´ve rootet an bl-unlocked my XZ1c with latest pie rom.
I did the quick and dirty version
- unlock bootloader
- flash TWRP
- flash Magisk
- flash modified Boot.img from "custom rom section"
device comes back in life, runs good with the stock t-mobile branded pie version so i begin to debload the rom.
When i uninstall "AVG Antivir" my device comes dead . At reboot it stucks at Sony logo or becomes a boot loop.
i had to flash system.syn with newflasher to bring the XZ back to life.
Now i freezed AVG and it works.
Why is this so ?
All other stuff is okay. The camera has no problems at low light because it seems that in pie no drm fix is needed.
device works good.
so far
thanks for your tipps

Same here.
When i uninstall with Titanium (does not matter which app)
Device gets in a bootloop.
(unlocked, rooted, latest magisk 19.1 and manager v7.1.2 on 47.2.A.10.45)
What does work:
PM uninstall commands through ADB CLI.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xp...ebloat-customized-script-xz1-compact-t3815157
(get device in adb shell)
*edit, you don't mention Titanium.
But iam assuming you do use that to uninstall and freeze the apps.
If so, it's good to see confirmation on this.

Same happened to me too on Pie. But as I was rooted I wanted something a bit more permanent than simply disabling apps, so looked to remove them altogether with adb using the rm - r command.
Here's a shortlist I put together...
adb shell
su
cd /system/app
rm -r com.s.antivirus
rm -r com.spotify.music
rm -r com.amazon.kindle
rm -r com.amazon.mShop.android.shopping
rm -r com.facebook.appmanager
rm -r com.facebook.katana
rm -r com.spotify.music
rm -r SemcEmail-release
rm -r Videos
rm -r Music2
rm -r com.sonyericsson.xhs
rm -r SomcMovieCreatorRmm-release
rm -r SemcMusic
rm -r com.sonymobile.support
rm -r videoplaceholder
rm -r weather-release
rm -r com.sonymobile.xperialounge.services
==========
cd /system/priv-app
rm -r DownloadProviderUi
rm -r DocumentsUI
rm -r com.facebook.system
rm -r com.facebook.services
rm -r SoundPhotoCamera-xhdpi-release
rm -r sonyentrance2-release
rm -r GetSetClient-release
rm -r assist_app-release
==========
cd /data/app
rm -r com.google.android.apps.docs.editors.docs-FfubAYziMkM1Tdi1ndfwug==
rm -r com.google.android.apps.docs.editors.sheets--gZdnhtn07wbDQLNfDaTMA==
rm -r com.google.android.apps.docs.editors.slides-VNI1JQuxIIWLkck8g3svPw==

Hmm interesting.
Assumed "pm uninstall -k --user" would remove total folder structure.
Apparently some still there, incl amaz0n shopping service.
Some folders seem to have read-only file-system, while i gain root everywhere else.
(Amaz0n shopping for instance, app / data removed, service keeps persistent)

how about audio video quality? any problems after BL unlock?

Hi
Video and Audio iss still good. Okay, video quality is better than on my Z5C but not so good as an NOKIA 8 .
The camera can also not make so bright pictures than the Nokia , but iss okay for a sony.
the audio volume is a problem. My Z5C has a modded mixer-path.xml , this file in missing in XZ1 so i can`t find any solution for low mic gain.
The Nokia handles this much better, voice notes are very loud and clear but audio in video sounds like a 32kbit MP3

I mean after unlocking the bootloader. Is it still desame before you inlocked it? No chages between locked and unlocked bootloader you can find?

No changes
It works like on stock, including low mic gain.

Curious if it also says ''read file system only''
Otherwise at my end something is wrong.

Did you try to backup drm? Is it posible to relock the booloader again with the TA partition intact? Sor for the quetions just want to know how deep is the water before i dive in

You should back up drm as there's no knowing if Sony makes some change again that breaks something. It's not a difficult task if you follow the instructions.
There's nothing to lose by doing the backup (except a little of your time).
I don't think there's currently any way of relocking the bootloader even with the TA partition backed up and restored though.

app2sd for spica

this is app2sd for spica, i'm using xjd1 firmware (eclair 2.1) + root_lkupdate_v3_pda
first, I will not responsible for any damage of your device...
you will need a partitioned sdcard, just use paragon partition manager to create fat32 and ext2 partition, create fat32 first then ext2
it's recommended that you use at least class 4 microsd...
here it is:
#mount -o remount,rw,codepage=utf8,vfat,xattr,check=no /dev/stl6 /system
#busybox df -h --> make sure /sdcard is on /dev/block//vold/179:1
#cd / --> go to root directory
#mkdir /system/sd
#mount -t ext2 /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 /system/sd
#busybox df -h --> make sure /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 is mounted on /system/sd, if the mounting process fails you can't continue...
#mkdir /system/sd/app
#cd /data/app
#cp * /system/sd/app <-- if you do fresh firmware update, skip this step
#cd /data
#rm -r app
#ln -s /system/sd/app /data/app
basically app2sd is ended here, but you will lost app2sd every phone reboots, so you'll need to edit install-recovery.sh, add "mount -t ext2 /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 /system/sd" in the last line...or simply download edited install-recovery.sh here: http://cid-c4b7e1a837cca944.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/install-recovery.sh
install-recovery.sh is meant to autorun app2sd when phone reboots...
#cd /system
#chmod 0777 etc
#mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install-recovery.old --> backup the oiriginal install-recovery.sh
#exit
$exit
prompt>adb push install-recovery.sh /system/etc --> push downloaded install-recovery.sh to spica, don't turn off phone if pushing install-recovery fails!!!
if you wan't to turn off your phone you'll need to type:
#mv /system/etc/install-recovery.old /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
to restore install-recovery.sh to the original one...then you can safely turn off your spica...
prompt>adb shell
$su
#cd /system
#chmod 0755 etc
#chmod 0755 etc/install-recovery.sh
reboot to check if it works...
I will try to answer any questions you may have about the tut here but be forewarned, I'm no guru when it comes to this stuff. Therefore, if a question is asked that I can't answer, it would be appreciated if someone else who can does so.
I successfully allocated 560mb for /data/app

ok so i have found me a free copy of paragon and have partitioned to fat32. how would i then create ext2 on the sdcard? ive been looking through the program and am not seeing how to creat ext2. Suggestions? I use win7 32bit. Thanks

first you need to delete all partition...
now, create fat32 partition first, specify how much mb you want to create for fat32
and then create partition again, choose ext2 for file system...
that's all...

ive downloaded 2010 free edition and demo edition. i am also inprocess of 9.0 professional. so, once that is done and installed i will try again. looks like a little trial and error til i get it. thanks for the replys and point in the right direction!
UPDATE: So i dl'd 9.0 pro. and it worked to create ext2 on the sdcard. so now i will attempt this again and go from there. again thanks for the help.
2nd update:
#mkdir /system/sd/app
#cd /data/app
#cp * /system/sd/app <-- if you do fresh firmware update, skip this step
#cd /data
#rm -r app
#ln -s /system/sd/app /data/app
got to #rm -r app and it deleted all my apps and wouldnt allow me to carry on. so i would assume that this should be done using adb?
That's wonderful !
Would it be possible to store some apps on the SD card, and let others in the phone's memory ?
Thanks in advance

no, before you rm -r app, you should cp * /system/sd/app as told in above steps, so the applications still there in /system/sd/app, and now link the app to /data/app/ with ln -s /system/sd/app /data/app
so the /data/app is basically just a link to /system/sd/app now since it has been removed...

No, the instructions are correct. They copy the files over, remove them from their original location & finally link the now empty source directory to point to the new app filled directory on the sdcard.
If you tried to do it the other way around & created the link first you'd no longer be able to access the apps in /data/app in order to copy them to the sd card.
Why don't you try the process from scratch after a nandroid restore & then cut & paste the entire sequence of commands & their output into this thread?
lol...too late. have already reflashed. may attempt again. i usuallly delete all stock apps anyways to clear space using root explorer or through connectbot. what my problem was as soon as i typed in rm -r app, everything went funny and lost my terminal. so i could ln -s /system/sd/app /data/app. so not sure why that happened. lol, once i get that figured, i still need to figure out the next step. lol i dont mind the trial and error. its a lot more exciting than a damn blackberry or iphone.

What makes you think that? All it involves is moving some files, creating a symbolic link & editing one other file. That said, I'd use adb if I was at my PC, if only because it gives me a proper keyboard & decent sized terminal.

Droid 3 Root Issues

Ok so i followed the instructions to root my D3 twice and i have gotten the proper results, after the second reboot when i adb to my device i am given the root prompt.
That is about it though. I have installed superuser, tried to install jrummy16 busybox installer so i could get titanium working, but neither of the apps can find superuser or get root access.
Any ideas. Sorry for not putting this in the OG Thread but figured that would get real big real quick, thought it might be easier to start a separate thread for issues with the exploit.
need to find and push the su binary to the phone first. Superuser won't work without it.
Alright i got it working.
Anyone know of a good resource for how to kill all of the bloatware?
Is it safe to use titianium to remove the VZ apps, as in uninstall not just freeze
Titanium backup
Sent from my DROID3 using Tapatalk
at this point, i've just been freezing things. I'm waiting till we get a better list of what we can safely remove without breaking things.
Feels good man!

Can anyone add this stuff to the guide? I know most of the stuff is logical for some of you, but I've never rooted a device or used android. (edit: and planning on getting a droid 3 soon)
Also how to delete bloatware and install/use ADB

Here's exactly how I did it... all steps stolen from the thread in the developers forum:
1) Make sure you've installed the android-sdk from Google on your computer. (http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html)
2) Connect phone to computer. In terminal or a dos prompt, navigate to the directory where you installed the sdk and where adb is located.
(example location)
and type the following:
Code:
adb shell
mv /data/local/12m /data/local/12m.bak
ln -s /data /data/local/12m
3) Power off and power back on your Droid 3.
4) Drop back to shell/prompt and back to adb location. Type the following commands:
Code:
adb shell
rm /data/local/12m
mv /data/local/12m.bak /data/local/12m
mv /data/local.prop /data/local.prop.bak
echo "ro.sys.atvc_allow_netmon_usb=0" > /data/local.prop
echo "ro.sys.atvc_allow_netmon_ih=0" >> /data/local.prop
echo "ro.sys.atvc_allow_res_core=0" >> /data/local.prop
echo "ro.sys.atvc_allow_res_panic=0" >> /data/local.prop
echo "ro.sys.atvc_allow_all_adb=1" >> /data/local.prop
echo "ro.sys.atvc_allow_all_core=0" >> /data/local.prop
echo "ro.sys.atvc_allow_efem=0" >> /data/local.prop
echo "ro.sys.atvc_allow_bp_log=0" >> /data/local.prop
echo "ro.sys.atvc_allow_ap_mot_log=0" >> /data/local.prop
echo "ro.sys.atvc_allow_gki_log=0" >> /data/local.prop
5) Restart the phone again. You now have root.
6) Get a copy of su (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=82FH3AGI) and extract it to the same directory as adb on your computer. Type the following:
Code:
adb remount
adb push su /system/bin
adb shell chmod 6755 /system/bin/su
7) Install superuser from the android market.
Done!
Thanks! And then you delete apps with superuser?
I'm having trouble with:
Code:
adb push su /system/bin
It keeps returning:
Code:
cannot stat 'su' : No such file or directory
I have su (from the above link) in the same directory as adb...
*EDIT*
I have root within adb. So I definitely did everything before this right.
Did you extract su from the zip and put in the same directory as adb?
Yep.
10char
similar problem here. adb shell recognizes me as [email protected]_solana so im assuming its rooted..but when i try "adb remount" and press enter it says adb not found. i extracted the su file to my adb directory. Any ideas?
If you get an error like I did (top of 2nd page), try this:
Code:
C:\AndroidSDK\platform-tools\adb push C:\AndroidSDK\platform-tools\su \system\bin\su
That worked for me.
I hope this is helpful to any one that is having a hard time.
I found a one touch root video like 5 mins ago on youtube.
This is not my viedo all credits go to thedriodpeople the ones that made the video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpGcuhoUp0k
k finally got the remount to succeed...now its say "chmod 6755: not found" after i enter "adb shell chmod 6755 /system/bin/su"
nevermind, simply retyped the same command and seemed to work on the third try mysteriously. working now
Hosed up my contacts after root and un-install --Help please--
---Solved---
So, I pulled a noob move and uninstalled a number of apps using titanium backup without understanding the repercussions of each. After uninstalling a few at a time, I would reboot my device and everything seemed fine. Little did I know, after uninstalling most, if not all, of the bloat I am unable to click a contact's picture to bring up the submenu and select call or text or whatever.
I didn't write down a list of items that I uninstalled and I should have frozen the apps prior to uninstall. I'm not a complete idiot and stayed away from obvious apps that shouldn't be uninstalled and what I thought was ALL motroblur stuff.
Long story short, I get a "com.motorola.contacts" stopped unexpectedly error(force close prompt) after trying to view a contact. I can look through all of the dialer menus showing contacts and recent calls and whatnot but I can't view a specific contact in detail. The searching I've done seems like there are a number of apps that use com.motorola.contacts and I believe I still have all of them installed but apparently not since there isn't a ton of detail on the latest motoblur that the D3 runs.
Does anyone have an idea of what apps use this process on the D3?
Thanks.
EDIT Javier78 ended up providing a solution to this issue.

Quick fix and I was on my way again.
I dont think we know what all uses that process.
Sounds like your are going to have to do a factory restore, give it sometime eventually we will have a list of what is safe to remove and what isnt

L90 D415 New update 12/13/14

I booted up my D415 this morning and found a new OTA was ready to install. It was around 275MB. I haven't installed it because I'm running the D415c build rooted with TWRP recovery. I can't seem to find a changelog on T-Mobile or LG's site regarding this new update. Other than loosing root, can anyone tell me what this huge update is about?
Apparently it is an exploit fix. It disables the ability to root with Towelroot.
I ran the update.... So I'm stuck with a stock ROM.
Sent from my LG-D415 using XDA Free mobile app
275mb is a large patch for an exploit.
What is an exploit fix? Do you think that there will be a way to root the phone after installing this update? I haven't installed it yet. I want to root my phone in the future.
It's a rebuilt and repackaged ROM in its entirety. How much is different isn't clear.
Sent from my LG-D415 using XDA Free mobile app
I wonder if only those who were rooted got the OTA? My wife had the same phone but unrooted and she didn't get the OTA yet.

I got it but lost root...kind of. The binaries are still there, and booting in to download mode still warns of root...but I can't get anything to recognize is other than Superuser by ChainsDD, and even that is of no use. FWIW permissions on /system/xbin/su are 755...so IDK maybe something can be done to get it working. I posted elsewhere that the new update brings no changes other than re-locking and breaking root, but I was wrong; it also brings knock code as a form of pattern unlock.

It appears to take root for the duration of the command to do so, but then I am dropped back to a normal shell on the next prompt.
I could use a taste of lollipop sometime soon.
This update enables free gogo flight texting and knock code pattern.

FWIW to any observers more knowledgeable than I:
Code:

There's a typeo in your dd commands "if=" parameter.
Code:
if=/dev/block/platform/msmsm_sdcc..1/by-name/laf
should be
Code:
if=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/laf
Although from DD's output, it appears the command ran correctly
Also, if "su" is working as it should, your terminal command prompt should have changed from "$" to "#" after issuing the su command. Which it appears it hasn't.
Thanks for pointing that out. I'll have to try it again; not sure if I typed it like that or messed up the copy/paste because of line-wrap on the limited column width when I am in adb shell. If this doesn't work out I'm going to try flashing back to kdz for version c. I got sick of playing around with windows being in the way, so here's hoping the flash tool runs with wine!

Just discovered a significant bug in the update: Video recording with stock app is broken. Switching to the video function works OK, but then trying to start recording fails with a toast saying "Unable to record video during call."
What call?
I tried clearing data for the app, force stop, turned off WiFi calling, rebooted, etc etc. Nothing helped. Google camera works fine though, unless you want to HDR.

I think LG makes the worst Android software.
I am rooted and i received the update notification but will it ruin my custom recovery ? Can i flash SuperSU zip after the update to restore root ?
If yes , then how to disable the update notification in such a way that google services wont drain my battery if uncheck system updates in DisableServices app?

It's my understanding that this update fixes the exploit used to root the device. To my knowledge, there is no way to ROOT the new update. Yes, it will remove your custom recovery. No you won't be able to flash SuperSU after the update. I cannot answer your last question as I'm not on stock and haven't been for many months.
Question, is it safe to take update even though rooted with twrp recovery, i know you lose root but worried about it messing up my phone, i see some people posting it did mess up theirs.
Until there is a reliable way to root it, I wouldn't take it. I don't need in-flight texting that bad.
We have 3 lg d415's in the house. 1 rooted w/custom ROM, 1 rooted with stock and 1 completely stock phone. Only the rooted with stock ROM received notice of an update. Luckily he did not take it, now to disable the updater somehow. Any help would be great, he refuses a custom ROM.
I do find it odd that only the rooted phone with stock ROM got the update. I figured the 100% stock non-rooted phone would have too.

Doesn't see any folders in SDCARD folder with any file manager

Hi, I've got a problem. Some time ago I installed GPE ROM on ma M7. Then everyting was working properly except ADB. I wasn't able to debugg any app on my phone, cause it was still showing that device is offline. So, I decided to try to factory reset my phone. After that I can't see any folder in SDCARD folder. I used several file managers including "Root Browser" and "ES Eksplorator". Both shows that SDCARD folder is empty. Additionaly, when I plug my phone to PC i see only 4 folders, every of them are empty and I can't copy anything to my phone.

What is more interesting, in TWRPs File Manager I can see all my folders and files:

Do you have any ideas where the problem is? I've factory reseted my phone 2 times and still the same.
Unfortunately I didn't had any idea so I restored to my stock ROM and it solved my problem. Unfortunately, becuse I fallen in love with vanilla Android GPE ROM.

When having problem to see your files on /sdcard when on lollipop roms, you can fix this problem normally by using these commands from a rooted rom with usb debug enabled:
Code:
adb shell
su
restorecon -FR /data/media/0
exit
Then reboot the phone.
btw /data/media/0 = /sdcard

Are you using TWRP ?

Yes, as I said before, I'm using TWRP. I posted images from TWRP File Manager
@alray
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I was facing another problem with adb and I wasn't able to use adb shell command, because adb shows me that phone is offline. I described my problem here:

As for your adb offline issues, looks like you already tried everything I could think of. IS your screen unlocked when you try to use adb commands? Anyway you could use adb from twrp terminal so you can at least fix (maybe) your sdcard issue.

Thanks, for the replay
I will try to fix SDCARD issue then, cause for now I need fully working phone.
BTW, it's interesting that I easly get 2.5-3h SOT on GPE ROM, while on stock ROM it's hard for me to get 2h with Energy Saving Mode On.
Ok, I still have problem with my SDCARD. Now, I even can't take a picture, because I get that communicat:
"Unable to save file to SD card due to insufficient file permissions."
I tried to run "restorecon" command on my phone via adb, but I get this error:
Code:
>adb shell
[email protected]:/ $ su
[email protected]:/ # restorecon -FR /data/media/0
SELinux: Loaded file_contexts from /file_contexts
SELinux: Could not stat /data/media/0: Permission denied.
When I'm trying to run this command via TWRP, I get error, that there is no -F parametr (or something like this).
I'd like to add, that I was trying to root my phone and when I connect it to my PC, in "WinDroid Universal Android Toolkit v2.5" app I can see that my phone is already rooted, but when I run SuperSU app on my phone, then there is mentioned that my phone isn't rooted and I have to update "SU binary". Then I agree and after that I get info that it wasn't able to update "SU binary".
Does anyone faced problem like this?
EDIT:
Ok, I manually installed SU binaries (I sideloaded the file via TWRP adb) and now I have root access, but I still can't take any pictures. After restorecon command, now I get this:
Code:
[email protected]:/ # restorecon -FR /sdcard/media/0
SELinux: Loaded file_contexts from /file_contexts
SELinux: Could not stat /sdcard/media/0: No such file or directory.

Its not /sdcard/media/0 its /data/media/0
@alray
Thank you so much for restorecon tip and for notice my mistake! What a shame for me that I did such a mistake... Thank you again, it of course helped me, now I can take pictures and also save files in my memory.
Again, thank you and shame on me.
