I am on latest firmware any guides how to root? - Sony Xperia XZ2 Questions & Answers

Hi everyone. I have an XZ2 single sim variant and I am on the latest firmware. I want to root the phone but i can't find a guide on how to do it. I have read that i need to downgrade to a previous firmware and unlock the bootloader so I wont loose the camera but can't find any detailed info on that. Thanks again for your help.

Please read the twrp thread carefully.
A downgrade is not needed to unlock the device.

Where can I find the specific TWRP thread? (and no it is not in your signature) I know that downgrading is not necessary for unlocking the bootloader but I will loose the camera if I do it on the latest firmware right?

It is, just click on "XZ2 Development"
It is the camera preview and no, if you use the newest firmware, you won't loose it.
But it will fullwipe your phone.
Sony Backup & Restore won't work after unlocking.

So if I unlock my firmware and root my phone my camera won't have a black preview window? And if i backup my current items (call history , sms etc ) with xperia system transfer I wont be able to transfer them back?

1. Yes, the camera will still show the preview and shoot pictures.
2. No, Sony Backup & Restore needs a working DRM.
You could use Google Backup or maybe there is some hack to root a locked xperia xz2 to use another backup solution.
Maybe a compiled stock kernel with this commit
https://github.com/j4nn/sonyxperiad...mmit/549389a03bfca69c8d2a8237b7d41c36105619df
will let sony backup & restore work on an unlocked phone, but I sadly have no time to compile it at the moment.

[Q] Confused about keeping DRM & BE2

Hi there, ive came all the way here from the Defy turf and im really confused about flashing my new xperia z. ive tried my best reading the tutorials but it seems to be alot harder to flash the xperia z with proper backup, i mean i used to flash my Defy pretty much everyday without worrying much.
So my question is very basic.. btw I have root my xperia z through the "[Exploit by: goroh_kun & huhka_com]" method, and the bootloader is unlocked.
1. Is it possible to backup my unlocked stock Xperia Z with DRM & BE2? i know there are both twrp and cwm, but ive heard that once I "flash" my phone I will loose everything even with the SD card... (i mean when u talk about flash, there are tons of file types u can flash such as img, rar, zip etc and also tons of ways to flash, so which way to flash is the best without loosing eveything?)
And if yes, is there a step by step guide about how to use the flashtool? (i know there are million posts about what a flashtool is, but what i need is a step by step on how to install/flash cwm or twrp on an unlocked stock xperia z with DRM & BE2.) I mean I would like to be able restore if I dont like the custom roms.
2. does upgrading from the Sony update wipe out all data? i mean for the future 4.2 update can I just update without loosing from what I have at the moment (an unlocked and root stock xperia z)?
sorry to ask all these basic questions, but ive been searching alot with no clear answers...
thanks!:good:

uh bro. as soon as your bootloader is unlocked, DRM keys are GONE FOREVER. Unlocking your bootloader wipes everything too. by everything i mean your photos, music etc as well.
secondly, some updates might wipe data, and some don't

thanks for the reply. but i dont really understand, because I still have BE2 and track ID working, how do I check if I still have my DRM keys? i know i have an unlocked bootloader through *#*#7378423#*#* but i dont remember unlocking my phone apart from using the [Exploit by: goroh_kun & huhka_com] method to root my XZ. You're not confusing unlocked and unlockable are you?
The only way to unlock the bootloader that I'm aware of involves getting an unlock code emailed to you from Sony via their official unlocking website.
While the bootloader is unlocked you will not be able to update to a new official Sony ROM either OTA or via their provided PC/Mac software tools.
Locking & unlocking the bootloader is explained clearly here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2153261
The bootloader will be locked on all new, unopened XZs
regardless of place of purchase, a phone purchased from Sony will (should) be carrier unlocked however.

just one more question, does twrp or cwm recovery backs up everything including drm keys BE2 and etc? or do I have to go through this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2234627

nope, recoveries dont back up your drm keys.
you have to use the Backup TA tool that was posted, this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2234627
Remember, ALWAYS, MD5 sum check before flashing, flashing someone else's or corrupted TA will HARD BRICK your device,

Problems Solved

Rooting is it really worth it?

Hi I am new to super smart phones like the z1, I'm the type of person to want to hack things and make them beret but I'm also the type of person everything goes wrong for. I want to know if it really worth rooting my phone what I would gane and if it worth the risk,? Thanks
Sent from my C6903 using xda app-developers app
Some of the Benefits of Rooting:
1. Easily backup your apps + data to your Ext sd card (no PC required)
2. Remove bloatware (pre-installed carrier apps that you cant remove without root)
3. Full customization of your xperia z1. Examples: change your navigation bar layout, add 3 dot menu bar, customize your status bar, assign different actions to your hardware buttons, increase/decrease height of your navigation bar etc
4.Flash custom ROMs and kernels (if your bootloader unlocked)
5.Overclokking.
6.Improve Battery life with Frequencies and Governors.
7.Full access to your System phone.
8.Modified build.prop to make uncompatible, compatible apps.
9...and more...

anyone who is asking this question shouldn't mind if he needs root - you need root ^^
there should be no problems if you read the instructions and immediatly ask questions when there are problems

So if I root my phone will all the stuff I have on there already stays there or does it wipe it. What happens when new updates come out? My warrenty stops to doesn't it? I would have to flash a stock rom if i have any problems? so the phones functions all work the same Ie connecting a ps3 controler? Just worry I'm going to screw it up or loose things to gain things

Unlocking bootloader might do that, but not root.
So rooting my phone will give me more control and customisation. Still keeping installed apps and game progress? Un locking bootloader will change everything and loose everything?

You don't loose anything when you root the phone.
When you unlock the bootloader than yes you will loose a few features such as Bionz and also the Xperia Throw.

First question is what version of firmware you are on. To get a fully functional root on 4.3 firmware (with write to system ability) you need to unlock the bootloader first.
You can have a partial root on 4.3 that will still allow use of Titanium Backup or Xposed Framework. To get root you need to use Flashtool to downgrade to old 534 firmware. Than root with vroot (check out my channel for video). Than install dual recovery. Once you have root and recovery flash a prerooted rom. I would highly advise using monxdified rom.

When you go to Settings>About Phone under Build Number you will get the firmware that you are on. To root the phone you need to downgrade to .534 firmware. This place is to ask questions, but there is a search function for a reason. When you ask the same question for 100th time you just flood the forum. Your question on why you should root has been answered. If you want to find out how to do it read on the respective threads.

I did a backup of TA partition, then I updated to 4.3 (290) and unlocked bootloader in order to flash TWRP and flash SuperSu. All was nice, except for x-reality didn`t work (which i dont care so much) but I didn't know if BIONZ camera image processor stop working too.
This is my only concern. I want to know if its possible to have unlocked bootloader and root without loosing BIONZ processor. I tried restoring TA partition while unlocked/rooted, but it became in a soft-brick which I only could solve flashing a ftf.
Thank you very much!

When you unlock the bootloader you loose the DRM keys.Technologies such as X-reality Engine or Bionz will not work with bootloader unlocked.
When you restore your TA do it on the same firmware that you did the backup on. There have been issues reported when trying to restore backup from 4.2.2. on 4.3

But it's possible to have a working camera without bionz working? (such it happens in 4.3 after unlocking bootloader).
I can only do TA backup in 4.2.2 (534 or 257) because are the only rooteable versions. And I only can unlock bootloader in 4.3 because it's the only version which doesn't lose camera functionality. How it's supposed to be root and restore TA in 4.3?
Thank you.

The camera works on 4.3 when bootloader is unlocked. You are going to loose bionz and x-reality. You cannot relock the bootloader on 4.3 if you want to have a functioning root. It's either one or the other. When you restore TA you will relock the bootloader.

Sony themselves said they fixed that with a firmware update, dunno exactly what firmware the fix came in but as i understood it was fixed so the camera will work from 4.3 and onwards. Because the camera will work with custom roms.
And well, everything is fixed that was said to be gone in firmwares after that, according to Sony. And yes you can relock your phone with flashtool. But DRM keys will gone forever, but then again as Sony says "it wont change anyhting with the phone, unless you put a custom rom in it with the firmware that is today". So DRM keys seems not that much needed anymore.
But it IS a good thing to always back up the TA and DRM keys before doing anyhting. I didnt do this and have never done though

I have Z1 c903 on android 5.0.2., and I was mad on sony becouse they didnt make update to 5.1, so i was looking on forum how to root and install some custom rom and make my phone updated. So i find on some thread that i should unlock bootloader, and i followed instructions and unlocked it, but without making some backup or anything else. is it possible to take backup & restore of Xperia Z3+ DRM Keys?

Hi, Is it possible to take backup & restore of DRM Keys of Xperia Z3+? After bootloader unlocking, is there is any chance of getting back the warranty? After Unlocking bootloader of Z3+, can I get the official updates? (restoring stock ROM without rooting)
Can anybody help me answer me about these?
Thanks in advance.
First, you should not use your email as a username.
Second, there is no known way of backing up DRM keys, but you can re-enable function of those using DRM restore (search the forum a bit). You can always relock the bootloader using Flashtool (again, search xda or Google) to regain warranty and also to get official updates. You can also flash any firmware using Flashtool without the need for official updates.
Oh and don't open three threads for three questions and especially not in general section but in Q&A...

Yes, iovyroot allows you to back up your DRM and use it later to restore on locked bootloader, already done it and right now liking it so far. However, only 266 firmware is working. Other versions does not work.
