Use T-Mobile V40 on Verizon? - LG V40 Questions & Answers

So I have a T-Mobile V40 currently active on T-Mobile but is unlocked. I've tried it on AT&T without issue. I was hoping to use it as an LTE only device with Verizon, but can't get it to work at all. As background, I have a Verizon Prepaid SIM that works in my LG G7 ULM, Essential PH-1, and unlocked Note 9. When I put it in the V40 and go to the network selector it can see the Verizon tower, but simply won't connect to it. According to the specs the phone has all the Verizon LTE bands, anyone have any idea why it refuses to connect? I'm about to give up and put it on eBay.
Alternatively, is there a method yet to replace the T-Mobile ROM with the Unlocked one? Would that fix it?

It's the TMobile ROM that refuses to let the phone connect to the tower because the TMobile ROM also has firmware that has preprogrammed LTE bands for only T-Mobile and for roaming only. You would have to reflash a ROM that's not T-Mobile in order to get to work right. It's the firmware that controls the soc modem And dictates what the phone can and cannot connect to even if the phone is Sim unlocked.

I solved it by selling the V40 on Swappa and getting a Pixel 3XL instead.

I just got this v40 cause iPhones suck, was using a Nexus 6P for the longest and then my big cores finally died a friend gave me his old 7plus and then I got ahold of a used v40. I'm selling it once the pixel4 is launched.

Verizon bought Nexus on different carrier?

Hi,
From what i've seen it sounds like Verizon no longer locks their LTE phones. So am I correct in believing that if I got a nexus 6 through verizon, I would be able to just plug in a t-mobile SIM and use it without issue?
Would wiping completely and flashing all the stock google images remove any verizon bloat/bootscreen?
THanks

My GF had a verizon upgrade she didn't care to use. So figured it would be nice to pay $350 vs $650. First time i've bought a phone off a carrier in like 4 years. Can't believe they charged a $40 upgrade fee. Tmobile FTW!

Thats not necessarily true some carriers still can sim lock until device is paid off or contract is complete.
Edit: AT&T did this

Yeah, I know from my ATT days. However as far as I can tell, I believe Verizon doesn't follow this tactic.

Postpay Device Unlocking Policy:
We do not lock most phones or tablets that are activated with our postpay service, either during or after the term of your service contract or Edge installment sales agreement.
We do not lock our 4G LTE devices, and no code is needed to program them for use with another carrier.

Be careful about this assumption. The Droid Turbo boot loader is still locked an there is no root, while the Droid Moto Maxx (International Turbo version is unlocked) . Most verizon phones can go from Carrier to carrier if they are a global phone so from that perspective they are not locked and can be used on other carriers but it doesn't guarantee the boot loader is unlocked and root is available.
Verizon
I got a Verizon Nexus 6 activated on Sprint yesterday. They just dropped the last digit of the IMEI and it activated with no issue. No SIM lock either. Store was very reluctant to try but 1 guy there had a Nexus himself and wanted to see if it worked.

Can i get lte with Tmobile g6 but Verizon service?

I'm on Tmobile now but going to Verizon soon but would like to buy a Tmobile g6 and unlock it. So what the title says, I know service will work but will I get lte through Verizon on my Tmobile phone. I used Tmobile in Verizon phones no problem and got lte before.
It depends on what radios the Tmobile G6 supports. I believe it has a sim card slot for the smaller sim cards verizon uses. I would google tmobile g6 radio and verizon radio bands and compare.
Also if I am not mistaken you will have to unlock the phone in order for it to accept another carrier. I believe if you buy the phone outright, tmobile will send you instructions for unlocking it.
Ok. I'm ordering the factory u locked g6 with dual sim. Hopefully it fully support cdma
I would also be interested in knowing if it would work or not.

T-Mobile generally requires a device be on their service for 40 days before unlocking it. Something to keep in mind.
Sent from my LG-H872 using Tapatalk
once unlocked you should be able to use LTE, but only for data. Most likely it will NOT support VoLTE (HD voice ) and VoWiFi.
I bought a used tmobile lg g6, used the unlock app to permanently unlock, but can't get it to work on verizon network. I inserted my verizon sim card but just tells me network is unavailable
Verizon refused to accept the imei for my t mobile G6. So I refused to remain a Verizon customer.

T-Mobile Note 8 vs unlocked Note 8 differences?

Other than preloaded software what differences are there between the two? Any T-Mobile features I would be missing if I got the unlocked version?
I want to know this as well. Does the unlocked version support LTE band 66?
There's no T-Mobile bloatware on unlocked version. You can use Samsung's native Name ID and call blocking instead of paying T-Mobile $3.99/mo or whatever it is. There's very limited RCS support, almost none (should be fixed by end of 2017 when T-Mobile rolls out universal profile).
Otherwise, hardware and radios are identical. I heard you can flash T-Mobile firmware without any bad side-effects, to get all features/bloat.

I have the unlocked Note8 and T-Mobile is my carrier. Band 66 is supported. It also supports VoLTE and WiFi Calling, like the S8/S8+. The only thing that I've noticed missing is RCS/advanced messaging.

Went ahead and got the T-Mobile version, but thx!
Also, carrier models are generally more fined tuned by its carrier, resulting in better reception, connectivity, less battery consumption, and data speeds.
I would like to see someone attempted to flash the TMO CSC/CP over the unlocked firmware. have best of both worlds meaning no carrier bloat with video calling ETC
Ran a few speed tests one after another, between the Tmobile Note 8, and Unlocked Note 8. The unlocked seemed to do better then the T-Mobile branded one. It's seem to prioritize which band to use as primary better. For example Unlocked got 61mb down, and Tmobile got 16mb I guess just sitting on band 12. Last test I did, the Tmobile one did do better at 61mb, Unlocked at 56mb.
I'll be in a long drive heading to Hershey, PA and will have access to both again.

ok so a couple of question before i placed my order.
1. Both the t-mobile version and the unlocked version are snapdragon chipset?
2. On the unlocked N8 you can flash the t-mobile Rom with no issue also without tripping knox / voiding warranty.

1.both are snapdragon chips
2. You can flash/Odin the tmobile rom without issue. And you can also flash/odin the unlocked version if you want to go back. No issues. I've done it a number of times the past few days. And no it won't trip knox or void warranty. You should also flash back to the original rom if you plan on doing a warranty replacement to be safe

I had a T-mobile Galaxy S8+ and, 4 months ago, switched to Factory Unlocked Galaxy Note 8. What I have noticed is that GN8 has weaker signal... I rarely get 5 bars unless I am in the heart of Phoenix or Scottsdale, or Chandler, etc. I live in a rural Arizona City (Maricopa City)... and I rarely pull more than 2 bars out here... My wife has one of the big ZTE phones and her's gets 4 bars in our house.. you know why? Because it uses the T-mobile extended antennae that T-mobile sent me, a year ago, when I had my S8+. Obviously, my GN8 is not connecting to this antennae... That is why I barely get 2 bars, and she gets 4-5... sucks and i have to figure out a way around this issue.

Unlocked Note 9 SM-N960U1 Doesn't work on any network

I purchased an unlocked Note 9 and all the networks tell me it won't work on any of theirs. AT&T, US Cellular, Verizon, Net10 all say no. I put my AT&T sim in and it works with low signal. Why would it not work? How do I figure out where this phone originated? I suspect Sprint because any phone from Sprint only works on Sprint.

Go to this site and run the IMEI. It will tell you if it's actually a U1 model or if it's a carrier model.
http://imeipro.info/samsung_imei_check.html
Whichever it is, you can just flash the ATT firmware, and it will work perfect on ATT. All the N960U and U1s are identical. Just different firmware.

I have the very same model and I just put in my LTE Verizon SIM and it worked right away.
This model is a boot locked, carrier unlocked, world band snapdragon version, that was never originally touched by any carrier.

I flashed AT&T but cannot get wifi calling. I ordered an AT&T one through Samsung last night. I'll return this one when I get it. The back of this phone says it's an N960U.
I forgot how crappy carriers are. AT&T unlocked my iPhone but no longer recognizes it. So, I can't get wifi calling to work before switching the sim.

There's actually a way to get WiFi calling on it working again. Look through the carrier switching threads in the Note 8 forums.
It's why I hate ATT and love T-Mobile. Everything works out of the box on T-Mo.

Well to be fair there will be places where signal will be weak or non and then you will be the one loosing.
They don't look at break is just way for the customers to get better signal every where they go or inside whatever tipe of building...

I also purchased an unlocked Note 9 on ebay. In "about phone", the model number is listed as SM-N960U1. On the back of the phone, it's SM-N960U.
The sites that tell you the model with the IMEI number are right, it's a Sprint phone. Samsung customer support said the same thing. However, the Sprint phone and the US unlocked phone share the same FCC ID.
Does that mean, they are the same radio hardware? Is it just the firmware that makes the difference in band capability? If you flashed the US unlocked version of baseband, would it be identical to the US unlocked version? I just want to make double sure!

V40 upgrade from V30

Have a V30 now and because of their prices, have considered purchasing another as a backup. Looking at Swappa, I see the V40 is less than $100 more expensive and rootable.
On AT&T but hate having the logo on the back, so buy either international or unlocked. If I were to buy a Sprint, carrier unlocked V40, and flash Pie, for instance, what modem will I be using? Can I use an AT&T modem for? I know on the V30, the US998 covers everything...just wondering how it corresponds to this.
Also wondering how much of an improvement the phone is over the V30. Biggest complaint I have is the ability to see the screen in daylight. Everything else is fine, for me.
Thanks in advance!

So if you buy Sprint V40 it's carrier locked unless you can verify that it has been unlocked for other Sims....and if you do upgrade to Pie it would be US unlocked Pie which uses the unlocked modem...but it will still keep the option to update PRL and Profile...but apn settings will be able to be edited...that I'm aware of the network unlock should still be present once you go from Sprint Oreo to US Unlocked Pie....

Saw it on Swappa from someone I have used before, stating carrier unlocked. APN should be set by SIM card so not worried about that.
Concern is having the correct bands for use in AT&T vs Sprint, 1, and 2, is it worth the <$100 upgrade from the V30 to the V40?

If the US unlocked V40 acts like a Samsung S9/S10/Note 10 once you pop in a different SIM card it'll recognize it, reboot, and apply the correct settings for that carrier. This might help with your modem concern as I'm just talking out of my rear right now, but maybe the unlocked modem has the correct carrier info.

This is usually the case but was not sure what modem would be applied using the bootloader unlock method.
Biggest wonder, though, is whether this phone is worth the extra $100, from a real world perspective.
