Galaxy Note 9 - Dex and Costum Roms - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Hi,
I am thinking about buying a galaxy note 9 - to use it in combination with a hp lap dock as a convergent device. Am also very interested to work with linux on dex. I am used to rely on costum roms (lineage os) and would also plan to change the software of my new device. Are there reliable and well updated costum roms for the note 9, which also do support dex?
Thanks for helping me out!

DeX has the requirement of being on stock firmware I believe, so it'll either be DeX OR Lineage.

Thanks. It don't has to be lineage. It seems that other roms, support dex. I found this one, which was not updated since a while.... https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...26-08-18-n960-dr-ketan-rom-jio-volte-t3834184

dex mode ONLY works on stock roms. anything AOSP dosent support it because its not in the framework kind of like how the spen dosent really work as an spen any more except like a mouse cursor.

Also please help me and can you also suggest me the best rooting method for the phone with TWRP...
Thank's for your Help...

I also own a 920G variant.
I don't know about it being a complete or partial Note 7 based ROM.. but after trying a lot of different options and getting frustrated (weak battery performance, no gear vr, freezes and crashes) I am finally really happy for several weeks now: been using TEKXodus Ultra Hybrid 13.8 ROM + SkyHigh Kernel v7.6.0 (not available anymore on xda, but google the official skyhigh478 wordpress page). You need to flash kernel right after flashing the ROM before 1st boot. Highly recommend this combo.

But is AOD working in that combo?

We have a BIG idea!

I'm not a dev but i could help with testing.
I'm just a noob (910V) ,, but I am willing to be a beta tester....very much looking forward to this build...
Sounds good, if you need help, here I am, but Telegram its a better way to do discuss :fingers-crossed:
I'm not a dev but I have a note 4 Sprint and can be a tester or do other tasks. I'm in!
Can we use something other than WhatsApp? I 2nd the telegram notion.
Remember when XDA used to have Logic and common sense ?
Let's go over this one more time
You want to port Android 8.0 to Note 4. Are you talking about porting official TW Oreo from Note 8, or porting all TW features - proprietary, closed-source Samsung code - from TW to AOSP?

Good luck with Porting a 64Bit System to a 32Bit Device... Simply not possible. And ported 64Bit Sammy Features on 32Bit AOSP? Mhh... The Note 4 may be the last good Sammy Device, but we will never see newer Samsung Software on it as Marshmallow Ports or pure AOSP/Lineage. Correct Me if i'm wrong but i think that's it....
Lineage 14.x is running great,if the drivers are there why slouldnt run a N8port dousnt run?

Well generally speaking when you port a rom (Nougat , MM whatever the case maybe) from a 64bit device, you dont port it as 64bit obviously unless the arch is unlocked and ready for it, you port it as 32Bit, the only limitation in terms of Touchwiz is when a certin app has only 64bit libs (Bixby voice is a great example) so even if you run api 24 (nougat) you wont be able to use such apps, But firmware side you can port it without issues, All 64bit phones include a set of 32bit libs aswell. and in terms of snapdragon Note 4 , yes you will never see a nougat or higher ""TOUCHWIZ"" based rom, Exynos however is already running Nougat.

As we all know you cant run TouchWiz based applications on AOSP (SystemUI / Launcher and many more) due to the fact that they require SEM codes (Samsung experience mobile), If samsung had their system sources up then you would have been able to, But just converting LOS 14 or AOSP to TouchWiz is just not gonna happen

because will never work since sammy needs his own android runtime etc etc for boot because it have methods etc needed from the framework etc. try to install the n8 launcher on lineage and you see what happens. it give fc. even after you add the missing method it will again fc and even when you add all missing methods that launcher needs in frameworks it will still fc because methods in the main libs are missing. and using sammy libs on lineage one is impossible since after some libs replace it will give a nice blackscreen
Hello,i have a question, the dates from the N4 and Nexus 6 are quite similar:

I think it is possible to port Oreo to the Note 4, but not TW version of Oreo (in other words, include all Note 8 features in an Oreo port)
It will most likely be ported as Lineage or RR without the extra Sammy features, idk.

Are we having AOSP-based rom on Note 9 because of project treble?

afaik Treble-based AOSP roms (Generic System Images, GSIs) are available on the Galaxy S9 / S9+.
I've tried flashing some of these, but didn't succeed.
Will the Note 9 support these roms? I thought it might be theoretically possible.
Any ideas?

Thers is only 1 oreo rom available at this moment "pegasis rom" but it's still in beta and camera Bluetooth is not working.
If you want for daily use This is best rom in my opinion
Fast stable without any bugs
Android 7.0 with latest security patch August 2018
Comes with note 8 aircommand+live messages+oreo keyboard+ note 8 edge panels.
I am using this from more then a week not a single complain
Getting 5+ hours of SOT

SAMSUNG official firmware is the best, TWRP, just debloat, have magisk, xposed & forget the rest.
Trust me it will just save lot of time.
Every custom rom for this device is all JUST TOTALLY NONSENSE, apart from moded stock rom FROM MSR.
IF YOU WANT A REFRESHING LOOK just try launchers of your desired phones or ROM.
Like oreo launchers or note 9 launchers.

Question Custom roms?

Isn't there any custom rom for tab s8 ultra? My tab is now 1 yr old so was keen to experiment. Is linux a good option? Any advices please. I am just a tech enthusiast so just looking to have some fun.

There's actually no developpement for Galaxy Tab S8 serie. The hardware is pretty new and Samsung doesn't help users to dives into his hardware...
If you want to try roms, you can still install TWRP and try GSI.
About Linux, except using Termux, you can't do anything since the Kernel is locked and there's no way (yet) to enable KVM on snapdragon devices...

GSI (Generic System Image) is a kind of rom that (should) work on any Treble enabled device (aka almost any device that come with Android 11 and up).
However, on Samsung devices, most of hardware relies on proprietary drivers (like camera or spen...), so you should'nt expect them to work good as using Samsung firmware
There is not custom roms almost to none Samsung device any more. Samsung is trying to become Apple. Locking every device with many ways. Only root there is, and this more difficult every year. Unfortunately Samsung is still creating the best hardware , and good software, so there isn't very easy to go to another company for the most users..
