Anti rollback - Xiaomi Mi 9 Questions & Answers

Hello,
I would like to buy a Xiaomi mid 9 but apparently with Xiaomi phones there is a risk of brick because of "anti rollback".
Can flash a custom rom without hard brick my mi 9 ?
Thanks
( Sorry for my Bad english )

I think it works great until now. You can easily switch between Android q and p.

For now it's safe to flash whatever you want. Been flashing Q to GSIs to MIUI global, beta or dev from different repos. Flash away! Go and get your MI9 ASAP buddy :highfive:

Thanks

Rooting chinese Mi 8 with unlocked bootloader and global ROM

Last week I purchased a Mi 8 from a mexican version of eBay, and I come from the legendary Mi A1.
I wanna have faith and think the seller did not have any bad intentions when he sold it to me, because it's a chinese version with MIUI 10 global ROM. It obviously has its bootloader unlock.
I'm aware of:
China Mi 8 + GLOBAL ROM + Unlocked booloader = safe
China Mi 8 + China ROM + Locked booloader = safe
China Mi 8 + GLOBAL ROM + Locked booloader = BRICK!
To keep it short, I wanna be able to use Google Pay and Netflix, so I wanna root my Mi 8. As far as I read, I don't need to flash MIUI.eu, only root and use Magisk tricks.
I downloaded this TWRP: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-8/development/recovery-twrp-3-2-3-1110-t3869729, and another one from a site that I don't remember.
I didn't want to flash it because I don't want to risk bricking it ot bootlooping it. With the Mi A1 I needed to boot into a "temporary" TWRP and then flash the real thing, so I tried the same thing. The TWRPs didn't boot at all. So, is it safe to flash that latest TWRP? If I root and tinker with Magisk, will I be able to bypass Google's certification?
It is safe to flash that recovery. I'm afraid that you might have to decrypt your phone by formating data. Otherwise I really recommend you to flash Xiaomi.eu, it passes SafetyNet and it has less bloatware, you don't even need to flash Magisk. I was on Xiaomi.eu since RN3 MTK as that ROM is originally from my country and it was the best option and I still consider their ROM as one of the best if not the best.

So, the TWRP is only flasheable and not bootable? I don't mind the bloatware,as I find it actually useful, except for the Mi theme and app store (which I already uninstalled). Is the EU ROM aat the latest version? The day I got my phone I got the 10.2.1.0 update and installed it normally.
To root I have to do the verity dm thing, right?
Lastly. I only want to root and not flash any other ROM for the time being, because I like to edit root/system/media stuff and some build prop lines for fun. That's what I did with my A1 to entertain myself.
EDIT: The formatting data part is really a bummer. It took me a day to set everything up and I don't wanna do it again.

You have to flash twrp recovery > reboot to twrp recovery > root device with magisk and then reboot to miui.
Yes eu rom is always updated to latest version!

It's safe. You can install each custom you want. You must remember only one thing. It's not allowed to install global miui and lock bootloader.

I am on official LOS 16 and it's very good and stable ROM for Mi8 but other custom roms are good as well. If you can buy Mi 8 much cheaper than Mi9 or k20pro that will be ok. If not I would prefer k20pro (mi 9t pro)

K20pro or mi9t pro are very expensive in Pakistan. That's why i am interested in mi8 because of its Amoled and SD845.

In that case buy Mi8. It is still very fast and efficient phone. Miui global or Chinese is quite good, custom roms as well. You can enjoy with this phone for not too high price

Now i have two choices
1. Mi8 Chinese 6/128gb
2. Mi8 Global 6/64gb
Which one is worth buying
Btw prices are same

It depends on what are your preferences. If you will be use any custom rom there is not any reason to pay more for global version. Remember that if you would like to has locked bootloader you can use only chinese miui rom ( Chinese and English language only) on Chinese version.

MI A2 pie downgrade or switch to 6X?

So after a few days scrolling through the forums, i realised that TWRP is not working on Pie update and it only works properly on Oreo Mi A2. I also realised that you can switch A2 to 6X and mod it using 6X TWRP etc2
Now I want to ask if you would recommend me to =
- Downgrade to Oreo
or
- Switch to 6X?
If i can, i would like to revert to stock so that i can still have my device under warranty (5 week old btw)
Not, Pie better, Miui 10 bagss
Poslano sa mog Mi A2 koristeći Tapatalk
On my opinion, don't attempt to downgrade your OS because it may hard brick your phone. If you succeed downgrading, you may experiencing some hardware problems, such as WiFi, Bluetooth and etc. Google intent to disabling OS downgrade since Oreo (Anti Rollback Protection). About 6X MIUI ROM version, this considering as rooting your phone and Xiaomi are not recommending side loading the ROM. If you really don't want Android One Program (hating and can't wait to fix bug's like me), Custom ROM's maybe recommended for you which is offer on some forum threads. But I rather wait for the next future update from Xiaomi and I know they'll fix the flaws of this phone. And of course I don't waste my opportunity to experience free update on upcoming Android Q!
Oreo is ok the best, if you have unlocked bootloader and critical you can downgrade with no problem at all. I have done it after buged pie and other times after custom roms.
I have switched my A2 to 6X for so long now that I can't even remember. I see no point in going back to A2. All custom roms for 6X are much simpler to flash and handle. No dual partition bull****. Plus I can flash miui anytime I want either. I personally see no advantage of A2.
Come to the dark side. Convert to a 6X.

The last line is really tempting. I've been considering converting my Mi A2. Have you experienced any bugs after converting, in MIUI or in custom roms? Perhaps the camera bug?
Also, which rom are you currently on? Any bugs?

Essentially both phones are the same so bugs are almost non-existent. You know I've noticed some people complain about the camera bug but I am yet to encounter it, and its been months. But I always depend on gcam so maybe this is only on if we try to use the stock cam. Even if the issue arises, there's a definitive fix by changing the build.prop to whyred (I think).
I'm currently on Havoc 2.2. I think its the most flexible and customisable rom for our device. Of course you can try miui first and then come to AOSP based roms. One persistent bug in AOSP based roms is that notification light doesn't work (for me at least) and I've come to live without it. Auto brightness may glitch but fixes are pumped out fast enough. So far I have no reason to go back to A2 stock.

Bro stop, I told you , you can't go back to Android 1 . If you want aosp experience use custom ROM . If you don't listen you will brick again & again , so bad until you need to flash stock miui China rom then bootloader will lock & you will stay China Rom , so just stop now ...
Use miui global eu zip from twrp recovery or use custom ROM ( you can use aosp to have like android 1 )
Thanks for the info. Upgrade and downgrade the custom ROM, then there will be no problem?

Yes no matter what you do with custom ROM , there will be no problems..but don't touch miui official ...if touching miui global eu it is okay but be careful anyway ...
Only possible problem is when changing from android 10 to 9 .. sometimes persist can get corrupted, but you can find a zip to patch or restore it ..so yeah custom ROMs are okay ..just keep custom recovery ..if rom wants to put another recovery .. don't ..flash again custom recovery after rom ...so as long as you keep bootloader open ..keep twrp custom recovery ..play with any custom ROM you desire.

Hi, what's the use of gsi? srry I'm new on this
Very rough said.
Stock ROM is from redmi factory.
Custom ROM is from outside the android community ROM based on you're model red mi.
Gsi ROM open source android basically all android from 8,9,10,11.
Biggest problem not a hot selling brand this phone. So custom ROM will take a long time if it ever should come out.
Gsi is not specified to this model so expect bugs, fails.Things most said volte, light sensor,VoIP.
I can't help you with what ROM to choice because I didn't change the ROM that much.
Just a little tip this year the redmi army.Is most likely rolling out android 11 and later on half way this year miui 13.

I suggest you to keep on stock rom firmware only.
Root it with magisk. Flash it with twrp.
And everything is fine.

General Best Custom Rom to replace the bad MIUI

Hi all
I think after the bad MIUI 13 update , it is clear that we will not be able to use the full potential of the hardware without any bugs .
So I hope that we will be able to flash a custom Rom soon .
For me ColorOS will be very good
Please share your opinion .
I share your frustration with MIUI and am also patiently waiting for anything.
I have tried a few GSI roms without successfully booting, now I'm on xiaomi.eu rom and the frustration is making me think about switching to my old phone with PixelExperience on it. The experience is way smoother.
I would be happy with AOSP though since it's a nice starting point for any ROM development/porting. I wonder if someone is already working on it.
amen to that. anything but this chinese bull****. hope something good comes out soon

xiaomi.eu miui13.0.4 is the best for MI 11t pro. u dont even need twrp just unlocked bootloader. the bat file will flash itself. its based on global but its way ahead. less rom usage, no ads, less storage usage , custom dialer and boot mode, can use themes from outside and a lot more. i m using it now on my 11t pro. u wont find anything better i bet.
