Emulation on the N920V - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had a lot of trouble with the Verizon Moto Z Force, so they gave me a refurbished Galaxy Note 5. Since there's no SD card slot, I'd opted for going for some OTG readers, but now that I have a battery case, I'd have to remove it each time since I cannot both charge and use an OTG device at the moment (someone told me this is dependent on the kernel?).
I had asked this question elsewhere, and someone told me to try here.
A sort of solution I came to is the idea of throwing everything on a cloud storage account. Having the saves sync across all my devices while having all the roms stored in a folder that doesn't, and just pulling a few roms onto my phone's storage at a time.
This seems great for games from much older systems such as the SNES, but not as practical for something like games coming from the PSP.
My question is if any of you know of any better solutions, or if you just have suggestions. Opinions are welcome. Keep in mind that I have a large battery case over my phone, in case there's any ideas about adding more accessories to the phone. So they may be a little less than feasible.
To clarify, I'd like to know any ideas as far as what I have: A Samsung Galaxy Note 5 with a battery case. I am not looking to change those two things. I am unable to upgrade and the current battery case I own has already cost me a lot for me already. Thanks in advance.

What's wrong with using the phone's internal storage? It works just like an sdcard, only without the ability to remove it physically.

It takes up a lot of space. Space that, when full, cannot be expanded through a micro sd card slot. I have space already taken up from files from my previous phone, 32GB is not a lot of space.

POLL: Bell I9000M Internal SD Issues?

Just wanted to do a poll for everyone using Bell's I9000M in regards to failing Internal SD cards. Hopefully this gives us a little insight into this widespread issue.
Please vote ONLY if you have a Bell I9000M Galaxy S Vibrant
i agree, it does seems the i9000m have some Internal SD problem that is only related to this model.
still waiting for the poll

Up and running. I'm gunna see if we can get this thread stuck to the page for a while too.
once we are done with this poll, it will be interesting to compare it to the same poll for the i9000 model and the USA models as well
I'd like to know too if the users that had their Internal SD fail were heavy users of the phone (i.e. had 9GB of music on it and numerous apps.). I'm not an extreme user (i.e. don't put a crap load of stuff on it) and I was wondering if that's why mine is okay.

I did not have a lagfix, but I did have the card nearly full. Not a lot of apps. But a pile of music which I listened to fairly regularly.
No issues for me with my Bell Galaxy S regarding internal SD mem.
No lag fix with JH2
7.5 gigabytes free on mine, but I haven't had SD failure yet. It freezes every once in a while but it seems most people relate that to no signal, although it just froze on me today after sending a text message, ie. I had a signal.

When did you get the phone? What were the last 8 digits of your phones serial number (top number listed on your box)? I wonder if it's an issue with early phones.

Serial number is still the same since repairs so I'm not posting it. But the battery manufacture date is august 12th. The bell store received the phone on august 24th.

Haven't had any issues with the internal SD on mine. Have an extra 16gb card in for media. My phone will crash when I'm in a couple areas at work that have spotty 3g and/or wifi. Never had it happen while at home.
Poll is now a sticky at Electroz's request. Hopefully this will generate some insight that will help get to the bottom of all this mess. (the other messes are on their own for now lol)
I replied in another post. I think it is highly likely a bad batch of SD card went into the i9000m production if numbers are higher than the other variants.

that could be another possibility.
anyways, just to chime in to what people wanted to know.
Internal SD full of apps, 400+ consuming about 1000 MB (super heavy user, keep changing programs very often as i keep testing out new Apps i find online)
mostly taken up by the GPS off line maps
is not even enough space to load the entire NAM maps, i had to chop it down to the most states i visit the most
my music mp3 and videos are on my external 16 GB full 100 MB free
Mine is bricked... was running 2.1 with firmware... keep your receipts people as you have a 60day DOA policy with these phones... after that, it's a lengthy process to send it back to Samsung direct via your carrier for replacement.
correction 30days return policy ... unfortunatly
well mine had that exact brick, internal SD will not mount. U would say im a failty heavy user with lots of mp3s on the phone and many apps. Ive sent mine in last monday, and speaking to another member i should get it sometime this week if all goes well. Ill report back when I get it.
The error is very bad because nothing on the phone works properly with this Error, it boots and runs fine it seems, but apps done function at all. My phone was stock with 2.1 (non working 3 button reset version)
Mine still works, but I'm not an extremely heavy user of the SD card.
What happens exactly? Is it just that the thing won't mount? Or is there another issue?
I'd like to test it out. Should I just put very large files on it until I max it out? What should I do after that?
And finally, does a factory reset bring it back to life?
P.S. Just checked my battery -- manufacturers date is July 25th, 2010.
This is a very interesting Poll!
On #project-voodoo IRC I helped a user who had issues with his SDcard on a Bell I9000M
Turns out that his internal SD MoviNAND chip was dead!
The system automatically used his external SD as a backup for /data, as the "mmcblk1" device become "mmcblk0".
The internal SD was so dead that the Linux Kernel didn't detected any existence of it anymore.
The symptom that the phone was working (using the external SD) but he couldn't mount his SD card anywhere.
Eventually he had a replacement from Bell in a few days.
What killed the sdcard ? An old Ext2 lagfix when creating the giant 1GB+ loop files.
But it wasn't the lagfix fault. It just acted as accelerator.

that's the most important thing people have to understand
the lag fix is not what really kills the internal SD, it just kills it faster, as in the hardware already had some issues, so it just put it out of its misery faster
better sooner than later, at least this way you can claim the warranty before it expires (1 year if i recall)

[Q] Note destroys external sd card (32 GB Transcend)?

Hello there,
me again, i fear i do not have much luck with my note....
this happened to me with 2 different 32 GB sd cards (same type though) now. First time i thought the card itself was the problem, but now i doubt it.
When i first inserted the card, everything was fine, i copied several gb of music on it without problem, could access al files from phone and via Windows.
Played some files with MortPlayer the other day, and after the next restart of the device (had to shutdown for flight) it suddenly complained that i had removed the card while the system was running.
This does not happen at all with my old 8 GB sd, though, it's running fine whatever i do.
Cannot access the card anymore from phone, camera or PC (Win7 x64).
Runnning german stock rom ICS 4.0.3 rooted on the phone.
Did this ever happen to anyone else and/or is there i way to get that card running again? It does not show up under Windows at all anymore, not even as unformatted or so.
Any help or hints appreciated, thanks in advance.
Try paragon partition manager to format the sd card then see if it works if it does reformat on the phone. I read somewhere that you could format to ntfs and back to fat 32 to get it recognised
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
thanks for the quick answer.
the problem is (don't have paragon where i am atm, but tried with Acronis Disk Director & HP USB Repair Tool and i guess it would be the same with paragon?) that i simply cannot see the device anymore via such tools, same is for the windows disk/storage management.
So reformatting it seems not to be an option here, was more or less hoping that someone knows another "trick" how to get the thing back to life - and of course a reason why my Note might have "destroyed" the 2 cards.
did you buy these SD cards new ? if so was the seller a reputable one ? there are a lot of fake / dodgy Sd cards on the market nowadays
Do you use a card reader via a usb port ? if so try a different port, like one on the back, direct to the PC's motherboard, finally if that fails, try someone else's PC.
If all the above fail I guess the SD is completely dead. I dont know how the Note could have caused this unless the card was a fake, People are using 64GB SD's with no issues at all.
both were brand new cards, bought directly from Amazon.
Could of course be possible that they both were from a bad batch... Gonna ask amazon if there have been any issues with that product so far, could not find bad ratings for it though when i checked.
I'll try to get hands hands on another cardreader, left for vacations yesterday and just have my Netbook with internal USB based card reader, the Galaxy Note and a Nikon D7000 with me, which all do not recognize it, but the backup 8 gb sd card .
thanks for your time
S.
Amazon are friendly, If you havent had the cards long just explain to them the situation and im sure they will refund / replace.
You could be right about a 'bad batch' unfortunately with all the technology we have, it still happens
Hope you get it sorted :good: keep us posted !!!
Samsung NOTE - dead 32gb SD card
first - apologies - I am not an XDA developer (I am a retired architect... and a noob)
This thread came up when I searched "Samsung note destroys SD card". I will simply report my experience in the hope that others may find it useful.
I get a Samsung NOTE G-N7000 in late August & buy a 32Gb SD card from amazon (specifically getting a Samsung one to avoid any incompatibility)
I load about 7gb of music tracks onto it from my PC; it works perfectly& gives me good quality music playback until a week ago; then all playback form the card becomes impossible with an "unrecognised file type" message. I format the card in the phone. I dismount it. I slot itn to my PC, where "my computer" says that it has zero gb capacity, & will not format it. I mount it in my old Blackberry Curve which says it has 29.2 gb capacity - I format it - & the curve says it now has 1.2 gb capacity. The PC still says it has no capacity.
The only possible cause I cant hink of it is that I seem to remember there had just been an Android software uprgrade (to 4..0.3.?)
I find Samsung phone help, ring them, and get very badly run around - several times I am given a phone number for "Samsung SD cards" which is actually the UK "Orange" help number. I have rung three or four numbers at least threet imes each before I get through to Samsung SD cards help. They ask for photos of both sides of the micro SD card - having (I presume) established that it is a genuine Samsung product they e-mail me a product return form & code.
I have sent the card off to Florijn in the Netherlands.... I am not holding my breath.
It has not been a good week for memory...
- Outlook Express started to compact messages as the computer was closing down (so I have no e-mails before 15th Nov 2012)
- this SD card died on me
- & I forgot to go to a folk music dinner &music session that I had booked a week previously
I begin th think alzheimers might be a welcome release....
Your "watch this noob" video... perhaps one of the funniest videos I have seen for a while ... and certainly the most annoying... andyou expect "thanks"?
Well thats something really unusual. Because i am using my note for a year now and bought a 16 gb card with it. I onky encountered 3 errors where my n7000 stopped Reading the memory saying bad memory and what i did was to take it out of the slot and then reinsert it again and It worked fine.
The only advice i give to everyone. Dont plug ur phone to the pc or any other device always keep ur phone wireless with other devices so thst the malware cant replicate to ur storage. I use kies air or bluetooth exchange in cases there is large data i cooy it to the usb and then plug that usb to my phone and it works ok.

[Q] Increasing storage space (through an SD adapter?)

I've got a 32GB GT8.9 and that, you'd think, would give me plenty of storage space.
It isn't! I'm particularly interested in digital downloads of films and these are weighing in at about a gig a piece. I like to carry a few! Also, I'm downloading games (which I may or may not play.)
On my phone, I can transfer stuff to the SD card, however, I think I'm right (though may not be) in saying that the GT8.9's storage is already treated as an SD Card in CM. Is there any way to use an SD card in an adapter as additional storage for installing games/storing videos from services like Ultraviolet/Flixster?
I'm pretty sure that, at one point, there was something in Linux that would merge different storage devices into one 'block', though I may have been imagining that, too! I'm hoping there's something similar for Android.

The hardware is available - see accessories on Samsung site (not allowed to post link).
The site says you can stream from the external SD card but you would have to be careful you didn't bump the adapter and damage the socket if you relied on it being connected a lot.

Does 'adaptable' storage on the Note 8?

Has anyone tried the 'adaptable' storage hack on the Note 8 yet?
Worked on my S7.
I have the same question
I was thinking about doing this but from what I hear it's more trouble than it's worth but if anyone whose done it would like to chime in I'm sure we'd all greatly appreciate it.

I feel the same way. More trouble than its worth. The 64GB is plenty for all your apps and for everything else you have your fat Micro SD card.
I can't find half a reason to bother with it. 1. Many apps, especially larger one will use SD card for storage, if not you can set it to do so in settings. 2. SD card is slower than internal memory, so frequently used programs shouldn't be there 3. It creates whole lot of problems if SD card goes bad and yes, had this happen to me multiple times on Sandisk included. 4. it can get complicated when you swap the cards between phones, computers etc and you use the phone without dedicated SD card inside 5. If you really think 64GB internal storage doesn't do it, hunt for elusive 128 and 256 GB versions. They should show up somewhere.
The only a reason to do it I can think off: "because I can?"
I wouldn't do it unless the UFS ever comes out. Supposed to be a lot faster external storage.
Sent from my LGV20 using yo Mama's unlocked bootloader.
If anybody does want to enable adoptable storage on the Note8 despite the potential issues, try ashyx's patch here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/general/patch-adoptable-storage-enabler-t3460478
Note:
- You will need TWRP installed.
- It might not work for you. I've only tested it with Renovate.
- You will need to use adb to set up your sd card.
You won't do it on an unrooted phone. Samsung never implemented it.
The phone's built in memory is far faster than any SD card at this point. You'd be slowing your phone down... and not by just a little bit.
I beg to differ
Agree the phones internal memory is tops right now.
Disagree the phone will be slow if you offload storage.
Source: i have virtually every app i use daily (Save a couple) moved to SD card and ive noticed NO.. I repeat NO.. noticeable difference in speed or issue by moving these apps. And im talking about WhatsApp, textra, several video playing apps, Instagram, Snapchat, outlook mobile, and some other apps.
There is SOME residual data from these apps that LIVE on the internal storage—perhaps this left over data keeps the app from bottlenecking from the SD card. This is speculation though.
If interested, in mexico, the largest carrier, telcel offers the 128 Gb model

SD Card

NO S21's for me. They do Not have SD Card slot !!!!!!
I haven't seen it confirmed due the ultra. If it's the case, I will be skipping.
I keep seeing no SD card slot in none of the S21's. I can't believe it! We already RSVP'D for one cause of the extra $60 using the Samsung shop app. We're getting the Ultra and I read all will have 256 gigs standard instead of 128 but we'll see. I may have to do the 512 cause hubby says once we upgrade were keeping these for a while. I think now you get 4 years of updates instead of 3 I read.

No SD card slot, no sale.
I want my bloody data drive... no compromise on that.
I got the Pixel 4 XL a while back and loved the phone. I was concerned when I got it that I might really miss having an SD Card (Pixel phones don't offer SD Cards) but in truth, I really didn't miss it that much. Well, I did miss it some because the Pixel I had offered something like 128GB of storage - but you know, I never got close to running out of storage space.
While I do prefer having an SD Card in my phone, I will still get the S21 Ultra, but will be sure to get either the 256 or 512 GB varient. From everything I have heard about the new S21 Ultra, I believe it is going to be an awesome phone. While not having an SD card is not the perfect situation, I am pretty sure I won't really miss it that much.

The SD card allows you to use it as a data drive. Unlike older technologies their data read/writes speeds are fast if you use a V30 rated card.
This allows you to do a full hard reset with no data loss. To completely restore the phone using the stored data including apps with no PC, no Playstore and little or no internet connection.
I can do a 99% complete full reload in about 2 hours.
My 10+ is fully self contained even if I have to reload a minute from now. A card backup to the PC and then a second hdd protects the data no matter what.
No way I'm regressing back to only one SSD.
Two back to back forced reloads caused me to rethink my methods

I understand - I guess it all comes down to priorities and what is most important to us. I respect your choice but, I personally am looking forward to getting the new S21 ultra. Best of luck my friend.
Based on all the web info, the S21 Ultra is the only one worth buying this time around it seems out of the three. Looks like that's what Samsung wants consumers to do, too.
For what it's worth, Android Central is saying that the S21 Ultra will be the only S21 Device that will offer an SD Card (big relief if it turns out to be true) Android Central Link

Samsung should know better by now though.
Samsung must think it's customers are inept.
Witnessing Samsung's customer service in action will cement that notion.

Still no bt AptX-HD support though and no 3.5 mm jack to offset this glaring bt deficiency.
I ordered my S21 Ultra - 512 GB today -unfortunately it turns out that early reports were incorrect - none of the S21 series has an SD card slot, including the Ultra. While unfortunate, it is not the end of the world in my opinion. Many phones don't have an SD card slot for a variety of reasons and having the additional storage options of 256 or 512 GB on the Ultra should help make up for it. Hoping they ship the S21's early - otherwise, 2 weeks is not that long of a wait. Looking forward to January 29th!

The lack of a sd card slot is chintzy as hell.
I absolutely refuse not to have at least one separate data drive on all my PCs and phones.
My 10+ thanks to that is now completely self contained; I can do a complete reload with nothing external needed and little or no internet connection. Hell yeah!
Used right a seperate data is a powerful tool and second layer of data security.
I'm not spending big bucks to backstep.

Yup same for me,stupid move Samsung.
Some people claim that SD card is safer/better and they do not trust cloud backups. If your phone was lost or stolen then wouldn't that result in losing all the data? You would you have to connect your phone to a desktop/laptop daily to back up the SD card which is an extra headache and what if you didn't have a chance for a few days you could lose some data. And is it more secure? With physical access to the device/card there is usually some way (bug/vulnerability) that allows it.
I use cloud for the simplicity if Google got hacked and someone could access peoples cloud data/photos then I'd be more worried about other data google have than the stuff I sync with my phone. I use a password manager for secure storage so I'm covered. Cloud works well, I recently reset my Pixel 4 XL, 15 minutes later it was restoring from the cloud and all apps and files downloaded shortly after that.
People want SD card slots, that is shown here. But I do not see them being around for much longer except in specialise phone makers trying to sell to a niche area. Are those who demand SD card slots going to end up with phones they don't want just have the slot?
I am in now saying you are right or wrong for wanting the slot I am merely putting on my views on it and would be interested to see what others have to say.
FYI I have ordered the S21 Ultra for the camera. Previously I've been happy with 128GB storage as I use Google Photos to backup and remove my photos to reduce storage. But looking at the capabilities of the new cameras I did opt for a 256GB as a "just in case". If I'm out and about and want to play with RAW/8K features then I'll be able to and then once edited I can clean up some space.

My music data base is over 220 gb. Cloud is a poor option for large files. It's either not secure enough or... too secure.
Never "lost" a phone but passwords have failed more than once. Many times it's a hardware failure the causes it.
Double redundant unencrypted backups stored in separate locations not including the SD card are the fastest and safest way.
There's no reason not to want a SD card slot unless you're chintzy Samsung trying to sell bare bones phones for big bucks.
I'm getting tired of playing games with Samsung...
I would have preferred an SD card. I purchased a 512GB SD Card for the Note20 (128GB). However, when I look at usage, I am only using about 80GB of data. The built-in storage is good for 99.5% of people. For the .5% of people, who need more storage - this puts them in a tight situation, hopefully they knew this ahead of time and bought a version with more storage, because otherwise they'll need to get a new phone. I ended up getting the 256GB model. Unfortunately the storage upgrade is a money maker for Samsung (and Apple), which is why they made this decision.

It's not a question of overall storage space; I'm using 60 gb of my 500 gb internal storage, but deliberately have over 330 gb on the SD card.
To load that data alone takes hours. I keep everything I need for a complete restore on it too; no cloud anything not even Playstore apks.
It's relatively secure from a OS crash and allows for a fast easy complete reload, anytime, anywhere. 100% builtin redundancy.
It also saves needless wear and tear writes to the internal memory.
I use dedicated data drives on all my PCs; combined OS/data drives are a bad practice that lead to unnecessary complications and data loss.
Learn or get burned.
Samsung got chintzy and will pay the price; No Sale!
Note you can still use those tiny portable SD card readers via the USB-C port (and USB drives ect). Obviously doesn't satisfy all use cases but still a handy way to transfer and back-up files occasionally.
When I travelled for work I used to load up movies and TV shows on a USB flash drive and plug it into my phone to watch them in the motels.
Before smart TVs and Netflix ect was common in hotels.

That's as good as it gets if you have no SD card slot. At least it gives you redundancy if used right.
The SD card slot is an invaluable asset if used correctly, however most don't fully utilize it to it's full potential. I was one of those until about 8 months ago when it dawned on me I had a data drive sitting there begging to be used. I went straight to fully embracing its potential.
One reload since then and it was a snap; fast with almost zero data loss.
256 GB is plenty for me, most of my content is on the cloud. That said, an sd card slot would be nice, but I can live without it.
