Creating and Restoring backups
Backing up and restoring can be very problematic if not done properly. Since you will be relying on the backups, this needs to be done with great care. So, I am devoting a separate post to this topic.
Here, I will explain what works for me (your mileage may vary). But, first of all, read this: https://twrp.me/faq/whattobackup.html (and note especially the recommendations concerning "system" versus "system_image", and "vendor" versus "vendor_image").
1. In my opinion, only your data partition (and perhaps the internal storage) should be backed up via a Recovery. While this may seem a bit unusual, you really should always keep a copy of your full ROM's zip installer.
By keeping a copy of your ROM's zip installer, restoring the ROM would be a simple matter of formatting data, clean-flashing the ROM, booting up the newly flashed ROM (to make sure that it actually boots, and to let it encrypt the storage in its own way), and then rebooting to recovery mode. This would give you a working device, and a fresh copy of the boot, system, and vendor partitions. Then you only need restore the backed up data (and internal storage), and you have your system again.
2. For full backups in recovery mode (if you must), the safest option would normally consist of:
Boot
Data
System_Image
Vendor_image
Internal storage
3. Do not rely entirely on a nandroid (ie, Recovery) backup of your internal storage (ie, your user data, photos, etc). It is wise to have copies in the cloud, and/or on your PC.
4. Do not rely entirely on a nandroid (ie, Recovery) backup of your data partition. It is wise to let your ROM backup your settings and apps data to the cloud (eg, google drive), or use an app to do the same. This provides a second line of defence. The reason for this advice is the dreaded "extractTarFork() error 255" which can sometimes (and randomly) occur when backing up, or (more devastatingly) when restoring a /data partition backup. Nandroid backups of the /data partition are potentially unreliable, and that is just the way it is. You might also want to read this.
5. Always take a backup of your user data (to an external storage device or the cloud) every time you want to flash something (anything - ROM, recovery, mods, OTA updates, or whatever else). Particularly, with a device like lavender (with very flaky encryption), flashing or updating anything at all can potentially lead to your needing to format your data partition to get rid of broken encryption (this is especially the case with regard to moving from any ROM to any other ROM). Ignore this advice at your own peril.
6. Creating backups of encrypted data is fraught with risks. If you want to backup the data partition of an encrypted device, you would be very well advised to first delete the lockscreen password/pin in the ROM before booting to recovery to create the backup. If you don't do this, you must accept the invitation to delete the ROM password (also available in the OrangeFox add ons menu) immediately after restoring the backup. Note - with lavender, if you have any of those new Android 10 custom ROMs that use FBE, you will have to work out for yourself what works for you ...
7. Do not try to restore a backed-up data partition from one ROM to another ROM.
8. Do not try to restore a backup of an encrypted device to a device that is not encrypted, or to a device that is encrypted with a different encryption protocol.
9. Watch this space for more stuff to be added in the future.
Simply wonderful!

its nice to see official recovery...thanks
I installed this recovery in the official / stable version.
I can not take the encryption in any way, I know it is not the recovery that will do this.
No way to take out the encryption? It's annoying to place a PIN at every rom reboot or TWRP.
Thanks

Do you really understand the consequences of having a lavender device that is not encrypted? I think you first need to read the README.md file here: https://files.orangefox.website/OrangeFox-Stable/lavender/

Team Win Recovery Project 3.x, or twrp3 for short, is a custom recovery built with ease of use and customization in mind. Its a fully touch driven user interface no more volume rocker or power buttons to mash. The GUI is also fully XML driven and completely theme-able. You can change just about every aspect of the look and feel.

I will use this post to share my work
Sorry for making another TWRP thread, but i've had enough with our current TWRP.
I have enabled logcat and strace.
This is the initial release so keep in mind that it has (probably) currently the same bugs with the official.
The only difference is that you can grab any kind of log and help me improve it and only when it will be stable enough , only then, i will push to the official.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
VERSION: recovery-3.3.1-0-b.img | date: 15-06-2019
FIXED:
1. mounts correctly all partitions
2. backup to usb-otg enabled
3. backup all partitions except data (i need to fix decryption)
4. restore fixed.
5. ADB sideload fixed.
6. you can flash a kernel and a recovery .img directly inside TWRP. No more rebooting to bootloader.
NOT TESTED:
1. I don't know about format yet. i haven't tested it because im not ready to format yet.
If anyone is about to format anyway, please after format do:
Code:
adb pull /tmp/recovery.log
and
Code:
adb logcat -b all > logcat.txt
And send me these two logs so that i can fix format and we don't need stock Huawei recovery anymore.
2. Can't flash GAPPS exactly like in the official.
VERSION: recovery-3.3.1-0-c.img | date: 17-06-2019
FIXED:
1. GAPPS flashing fixed. Same goes for any other flashable package.
2. backup data and wipe data are fixed. (not tested restore yet)
NOT FIXED:
1. Even if wipe data and backup data are fixed, and even though we can restore data ! Sadly there are bugs when we wipe data or perform a restore. Until i fix (if i fix it) decryption, please keep using the stock Huawei recovery to format your data and avoid restoring data.
ISSUE: Data partition is fine and it sais that it's 128gb but apps think that we don't have enough "free space". It may just be an issue in vold too in the rom where i tested it.
VERSION: recovery-3.3.1-0-d + e.img | date: 20-06-2019
FIXED:
- minor bug fixes for stability
- added nvme partition which is needed during the decryption
- adb sideload fixed. No need to push and install
NOT FIXED:
- decryption
- format
It's great news man. Looking forward to your further progress! Fully functional twrp is the juice.
Amazing, hope we can have finally fully functional twrp
Thanks

not yet. gimme some hours. im trying to fix something and then ill share a new build.
i have 2 errors left:
1. linker: Warning: couldn't read "/system/etc/ld.config.txt" for "/sbin/sh" (using default configuration instead): error reading file "/system/etc/ld.config.txt": Too many symbolic links encountered
That problem is in bionic.
in bionic/linker/tests/linker_config_test.cpp or in
bionic/linker/ld.config.format.md. But i can't figure it out yet. That will fix the gapps flashing issue with latest TWRP and mine.
What's strange is that it doesn't happen to everyone. So i'm confused.
Me i can't flash any gapps, when others reported to me that they can.

At least wait for 1. otherwise you may need 3.2 official TWRP to flash gapps and it's boring to flash other TWRP every time.

just use it then. if it can flash anything for you, then use it.
ill upload another one now that can also backup data.
For those who cant flash gapps just use twrp 3.2 official.
problem is symlink : system/etc to /etc.
@steadfasterX will help me with that.
EDIT:
VERSION: recovery-3.3.1-0-c.img | date: 17-06-2019
i found a temporary fix until @steadfasterX helps me out. its ok for flashing. system backup is not ok.

- Even though format is successful, TWRP will freeze and on next boot we can't boot or boot to TWRP.
We must format with stock Huawei recovery to fix that. So do not use the format yet in TWRP.
There must be some specific command that huawei uses to format the f2fs data partition. It's impossible to get that from a first boot from EMUI because adb logcat is not allowed until we unlock and enable
developer options. Plus that we can't selectively decrypt and encrypt again like we did a few years ago on older devices.... so i have to test several format command lines randomly until i get the right one.
- When i decrypt i get a fail, without a clear error. Decryption still has a looooong way to the fix and i don't have the time for that to do it daily, so be patient.
Well, at least we have a reliable TWRP now.

Lukas do not wipe data at an encrypted and non-decrypted partition.
When you will boot again to the rom, the system will think that data is clean so it will attempt to encrypt the already encrypted.
At settings you will see that you have 128gb data partition but you will have only a few mb actually.
wipe data does NOT remove encrption, only a format can remove the encryption.

Did it actually wipe though? If it didn't the ROM may still boot as it would simply be a dirty flash.
Hi,
although I'm on a P20 Lite, does this work with EMUI9.x?
Is it possible to create TWRP also for ANE-LX1?
Does this work with GSI or only Stock ROMs?

the only way to know that is to flash it and test it.
what are you afraid of ? if twrp doesn't boot, you can flash back the stock huawei recovery again.
>> the device won't have any issues if twrp is not for that device <<
It should work if it can boot. The only difference is our resolution. So if you see TWRP boot , then it's ok to use it.
* It will probably work because i don't force any specific resolution here.
But if it doesn't , change this to your resolution https://github.com/Suicide-Squirrel...43104c493e172dc469d7838153/BoardConfig.mk#L53
and build TWRP for p20 lite
Hm, ok, my P20Lite boots up, adb is initialized and I can also swipe to start but after 5-10 seconds, the phone just reboots to bootloader, so I cannot do anything useful with it....
I'm currently on EMUI9.1 (so A/B partitioned) and I already faced this behaviour on askuccios TWRP...

Thanks for this recovery, It looks amazing, I've tested it and so far everything works except mount system or vendor or things that needs to mount those partitions but it's a common issue with Android 10, also, you provide only an Image and not the zip file, tried to install that image as recovery ramdisk but it failed (new boot.img larger that boot partition).
Aside from that, it really impressed me and I like it a lot, thanks

Yeah but there is a mistake on how to install this. There is no zip, it's the img file actually and we have to boot into fb first. This might be intentional but it's not newby friendly.

I don't think so, I think the recovery is too big to fit in the ramdisk.
Well, the img file of TWRP 3.3 is 1 MB bigger, so there must be some limitations that I'm not aware of.
Perhaps there is a way to boot this with a modified TWRP that could reboot to Orange Fox using aroma.

Good work, i was trying to find a proper TWRP for my Realme 6 Pro from lasat week.
Until now i was able to flash updates or downgrades just via Realme Flash Tool.
Do we still need to flash vbmeta_v2 in order for TWRP to work properly?
Testing now.
Update:
It does need the OF_avb-patcher.zip tp be flashed in order to keep TWRP after restart and to decrypt MPT storage and phone corectly.
I did not flashed it and all the time got stuck in a boot loop and TWRP and all phone remained encrypted, was not able to do anything until i flashed Stock Rom via Realme Flash Tool.
Disclaimer: Flashing Stock Rom will make TWRP gone, to preserve it, follow the steps:
1. Flash Stock ROM .ozip
2. Flash patched-vbmeta-v2.img
3. Flash TWRP from above link
4. Flash OF_avb_patcher.zip
6. Flash Magisk via TWRP (If required)
7. Done

Please provide screenshots of your problem. I assume that you are trying to copy files to an encrypted internal storage. Decrypt /data or copy files to SD card

All you need is vbmeta.img from your stock ROM.
I used above instructions and everything work just fine, including decryption of internal storage.

Can't delete file from phone with root explorer so i tried with TWRP as usualy and for the first time IT DOESNT WORK!! Never seen that before. Though system's not mounted as read only. What to do..?
Do nothing. vendor, product and system partitions are R/O, because they are part of new type partition named "super". It is dynamic partition that is not editable.

LineageOS does still include various hardware-specific code, which is also slowly being open-sourced anyway.
All the source code for LineageOS is available in the LineageOS Github repo. And if you would like to contribute to LineageOS, please visit our Gerrit Code Review.

I've tried to flash it on my Mi Note 10, but I ended up stuck on bootloop.
Here's what I've exactly done:
- Since I was on MIUI 12.0.2, I've downloaded and flashed MIUI 12.0.3 (the one linked before, recovery version). Although I did flash it, I didn't boot up the phone, nor did go through setup wizard. I just rebooted back to TWR
- Performed Data format (advanced wipe - selected only "Data")
- flashed LOS
- format Dalvik/Cache
- Reboot
Could the issue be not going through first-boot setup after flashing to MIUI 12.0.3? Also, I'm trying to boot my phone on this MIUI right now, but it is definitely stuck on MIUI logo. I guess I screwed up big time.

The thing is, you went to advanced wipe and only picked "Data" only... If you do advanced wipe... You have to also choose "Internal," both "Cache's"and "System". It's easier to just go to "Wipe" press the "Format data" option and type in "yes".
Plus.... when coming from another Miui Rom, you have to wipe everything from the wipe options written above.
So do that.. and then follow the steps below.
-Reboot to TWRP (in case your PC does not see your phone connected to load 12.0.3.0).
-Then load the 12.0.3.0 full rom, flash... "format data option", type in "yes"...
-Reboot to TWRP again.....
-And then flash Lineage, GAPPS and the latest Magisk 21.1.. and reboot "System".
Now if it doesn't come through.. flash 20.4 Magisk first, reboot to TWRP.. flash 21.1 Magisk and reboot "System".

So TB-8504F has a touchscreen issue where you need to sleep and wakeup recovery after it boots for touch to work. Like what @ZONTAC mentioned earlier. I was able to fix it on TWRP 3.6.2 that I built for testing. I would imagine it would work for PBRP as well. It does not affect TB-8504X which is why its not commonly seen. The F variant is not as popular. I have not tested it on 8504X mind you but I don't think that flag will be needed by it.
TB-8504F: Remove blank on boot · deadman96385/[email protected]
This flag kills the Himax touch until you lock and unlock on TB-8504F but strangely does not affect TB-8504X

Your recovery advertises that it supports both variants. That patch will fix the issue on TB-8504F, it should not change anything on TB-8504X but I don't have that version to confirm.

Do You have any idea?
Freshly flashed stock, there everything works, but I cannot flash any ROM - tried both crDroid, RR and Ubuntu. Always same error.
Strange is it mounts system at first... And after formatting it can be mounted again, but than I got error, cos no image is there to be patched, I believe?

Follow proper processor
In your case :- if you are coming from stock , 1. mount system in stock recovery
2.flash pbrp/twrp
3. do factory wipe(or reset)
4. do advance wipe in which wipe system, cache, delvick ,data
5.after that flash system
6. Still having problem try d/f twrp or contact rom dev
Did a test boot without flashing. System starts but hangs on many tasks, even restarting to other modes hangs the system. My device reports as tb_8504x. I had problem with flashing through TWRP so I wanted to try PBRB.
Hello, I got PBRP to boot into recovery, I have OEM bootloader unlocked and USB debugging enabled. I'm trying to completely format the tablet to install LineageOS 18. When I wipe the process gets stuck on "Formatting system using mke2fs". It's been on it for about an hour now. Is that normal? The device is responsive. I can hold the power button down and get reboot options. I can force a reboot and get back into the recovery and try again but each time it gets halted at the format stage. What should I do?
