[APP] TTS apps stop reading after a few minutes with screen locked - Huawei P20 Pro Questions & Answers

Hello,
I'm using eReader: Prestigio Text to Speach (TTS) to listen to books while I'm moving from one place to another.
I don't know why, but after a few minutes of listening, with the app minimized and screen locked, the TTS stops. The only way to resume TTS is to unlock the phone and open the app. Doing this will resume the TTS from where it was before stopping.
I thought that this is because of the app, but the exact same thing happens with Moon+ Reader Pro.
I didn't had this problem on my previous phone (Xiaomi MI 5).
I think this happens because of a setting which suspends the app.
Did somebody had this problem or knows how I can fix this ?
Thank you and I wish you a good day

Turn off the battery optimization for this application in the battery settings

Hello pablo103,
Thank you for your response
I went to Battery -> Battery usage -> Moon+ Reader Pro and at App launch I disabled Manage automatically and left Auto-launch, Secondary launch and Run in background on, but this doesn't fixed the problem.
In the next test I also turned Performance mode on, but still no change

Hi. Any update regarding this issue? Maybe try to turn off battery optimization for TTS engine too?

Hey,
I didn't test the app in the last months since I'm using it while I'm out (pandemic).
I've looked for TTS in "Battery optimization" but I couldn't find anything related. The app uses Google Text-to-speech.
Now I've went to "App launch" and disabled the automatic management for Moon+ and left only Run in background (from the available options).
I'll test one I'll get more out of the house.

[Q] Constant ads on Moto X

Sorry if this is noob questions, but all the time on my phone, google play will open up to a random game/app while I'm doing other things. Specific examples:
When I'm using talk to text-- the microphone will grab half of what I'm saying, freeze, and then switch to google play with "uber" up or something.
When I'm typing a text message, google play will pop up.
When i wake up the the morning, and go to turn off the alarm, there is an ad in the way, and I have to press home, open clock to turn off the alarm.
These are the three most common instances where the ads come up, and it's just super annoying. Does anyone have any suggestions to get this to stop?
Thanks in advance!!
Must be an app you installed recently. Try checking Google Play reviews of apps you have on your phone (look for reviews with similar complaints).

As said above it's probably an app . I had a similar problem long back . It's usually from an ad supported app that runs in the background (eg: Applocker or equivalent, photo hiding app , another telephony app like full screen caller HD or something) .So check which apps are running in the background before you start un-installing :good:
surely an app....
If you're a normal user, you need to revisit you Installed Apps and find out! (some app which has lot of Permissions is doing this, ignore them in future)
If you have root, AdAway would be handy.
If you have root+Xposed, MinMinGuard will do the job.
It's surely an app. Try installing this, will tell you which app are pushing ads to your phone, then you can uninstall them.

Third Party App Notifications not working unless App is Open

I've noticed that if you use a third party app for SMS like Signal, you dont get a notification unless the application is open, same with gmail.
Has anyone else noticed this?
go to advance setting >battery manager >protected app and check if application is not checked on , that's mean when screen is off the application will not work unless you open it... so if you need notification from certain apps just mark it on

This is a the 'doze' function in Huawei EMUI. A lot of firmwares have this issue. It's because Huawei has blacklisted many apps to not to send notification when screen is off. The apps that are white-listed include WhatsApp and some Chinese Tencent crap.
There is a method to enable notifications for all apps but obviously that requires root.
And yeah, Welcome to EMUI, a UI that plays with your emotions.

I find this quite worrying as a potential P9 owner. Is there a list somewhere of these black/white listed apps?

All I can say is I have turned on every apps to run when the screen is off. I do t get any notifications, only if I go on the app or if I turned the phone off then back on I get a batch of notifications. I receive certain apps notification but its not consistent. Can't wait for a good root, to get rid of this crappy EMUI and hopefully the camera app will be ported, I'm happy with the pbone, the camera, but this UI is from hell.
Weird, I have 0 issues with notifications, everything turns up very quickly. Gmail, whatsapp, youtube comments... Etc.
I also use Nils lockscreen notifications though, I have the huawei lockscreen notification system disabled. It works very well like this until I find the time to root.

How did you disable it? Mine is greyed out saying locked by administrator and I haven't. This UI is starting to P me off. Think touchwiz will see me again soon ?
Have you looked at apps > phone manager > notification centre?

I only disabled the huawei lockscreen notification system (to disable the lockscreen all together you need root). Just use any lockscreen other than the stock magazine one in the theme selecter.
The UI certainly is different. But imho customizable enough that it doesn't get in the way. This is android after all.

OK if you guys have root i have something to try for you. I had issues with the process of GMD gesture control. It was killed by the battery saving tools implemented in this phone.
So I tried freezing certain system apps through titanium to find the one responsible for closing the background process and I think I found it:
It's a process/app called "power genie". I disabled it and now the process sticks. Also I made gesture control a system app, so maybe it's a combination of the two things.
It's not the same issue as you had but maybe it works for you too.

So does this method allow for notifications to come through without having firstly opened the application then going to home-screen with it still open?

You'd have to try that out for yourself because I never had any issues with notifications coming through and I use third party software (Nils) for lockscreen notification.
What I described is a method that prevents a Huawei "power save" service called power genie killing background processes. No guarantees though, I had issues with gmd gesture control not working after a few minutes and I had to constantly open the app to make it work again. Then I froze power genie and since then it worked 100%.
So it's just my theory that it might stop other apps/processes from being closed as well.
I still dont get notifications coming through via the official gmail app, i might trying that power genie freeze, since any app thats not Huawei wont come through as a notification and thats when I give the app full access.'
I'm not sure if this is worth a try, but there's an option to 'ignore optimisations' on a per-app basis.
In settings > Apps > Advanced > Ignore optimisations > All apps
I've instructed to ignore optimisations for Dash, an app with a background service that launches the app upon connection to my car's Bluetooth OBD. I'll feed back if this has any impact, as I've noticed it doesn't auto-start the app on the Huawei P9 as it used to on my Nexus 5, despite 'protecting' the app in the battery manager.

If it's just Gmail, try deleting cache and data for the Gmail app and reboot first. My wife had the same issue just with the Gmail app a few days ago (on a galaxy s3 though).
Same issue with Instagram so I guess it's not only gmail

Applications automatically closed

After I updated to the last OTA all applications closed automatically within some minutes. I FACTORY RESET the phone last night but the issue not solved. What should I do now?
I have Hawaii P10+ it comes with 6GB ram AND 7.0 nougat version (non rooted)
I disabled all kind of optimization in the phone and and the lock symbol is ON also the phone is cold and not heated at all and also its on charge and am using only one game, But it still auto close while im USING IT .
It happens with all the apps even system apps like "mail" i was writing a long mail for 1hour and it got killed like 3 times, im lucky it saves itself as draft. But i cant play any game unless i fix this.
any help is very appreciated.
Yes this is happening too with mate 9 on latest update, the apps auto close, hope huawei are aware and will fix it soon.

Playing Music Cuts On Lock Screen

Hi;
Just set the phone up but am having issues with music playback with any app.
As soon as the black lock screen comes up the music stops; if I then wake the screen up by touching a button the music restarts; anyone come across this issue? Or have a fix?
**Update**
Ok it only seems to work with the stock music app - not player pro / vlc or anything else. Is this a permissions issue?

I think it's related to a battery saving options.

I have the same issues with my P20 lite. I think that the battery management has something to do about this. I looked into the battery and apps settings to allow my music player (BlackPlayer) all the permissions, but still having the music stopped. It's really annoying

You're right it's a battery issue. If you go to settings > Battery > App Launch and set the apps you want to 'Manage Manually' you can leave them running in the background; this gets you over the issue.
This fixed several apps not running as I'd expected. The default action close the apps down as soon as the screen locks to save power.

Yes, we can fix by using 'Manage Manually' setting but I see that some other apps, such as Google Play Music, Zing MP3...still play music in background normally without setting it.
I wonder how they can pass this issue? Or Huawei has different treatments for each apps?

I had to do this with spotify. It's an android thing, not specifically a huawei issue. I had this issue on an S9 i had on loan too.
As mentioned, it's just a power saving option. Just manage the app manually and it will continue to play.

Thanks for your answer. Can we check if the app has been managing automatically? If yes, I want to show a dialog to guide user go to the setting screen. (Because user may not know this setting)
Anyone figured this out?
I'm using YouTube music with premium subscription.
I have edit the battery settings to Manage Manually and enabled all 3 sub options. After screenlock, msuci stop. I dnt have any battery saving options set
Okay I know this is an old thread, but thought I'd post what I found on my mate 20 pro, it's quite hidden away!
Settings -> Apps -> Apps -> 3 dot menu -> Special Access -> Battery Optimisation
Select 'All apps' from the drop down, and then select 'Don't allow' on the app you want to stop huawei from quitting
It works for me, try this.
beside your app in the "allowed" battery optimization list. the Google Play Service too must be exampt.
Battery Optimization > Google Play Service > Not Allowed (it drains battery)
- do the same for the music app.
App Launch > 3 dots on top right corner > Show System process > Google Play Service > Manage Automatically.
- do the same for your music app
i hope it works as it did for me

Question Google play doesn't work after update

Hi everybody,
following an update of my smartphone today via OTA, google play and youtube no longer works. Do you have any idea where it might come from?
FYI, a few weeks ago I deactivated a good number of applications via ADB but I had no problem so far.
Hi tomtom34,
Have you tried setting your timezone and date manually? Sometimes this can help. I just got the update but have not encountered any issues yet.

I've noticed this too! I had to put back com.vivo.pem for it to work, but it seems to work if you do manual sync of google account, clear google play cache, reboot 2 times then open google play and wait a few moments, then it springs back into life and with com.vivo.pem disabled (the way we like it).
Strange, I know, happened again today after another nighly update.

Annoyingly, all google apps stopped working for me again today after it ha been working for a while. Had to activate com.vivo.pem, restart phone (and deactivated pem again as we want it) and the google apps work again, will see for how long this time...

Google seems to have settled down but since updating to OceanOs notifications are much worse. I had working before (not perfectly) WhatsApp and FB Msg notifications but it seems even with pem removed, app permissions set and batt optimisation for apps set it is still deciding to close apps.
Perhaps it's iManager? (We cant disable that now) or whatever app tells us it's closed this.. or blocked pop-ups from that.. But I feel that is prob iManager.
Is there a specific reason vivo app should be removed?

Notifications working ok now, I had not realised the basic notification setting in the app(s) were set to none (No chat notification at all) So many settings.... anyway, wasn't an OceanOS issue.

@pwnedphone GMS stopped working again, now I cant get GMS without PEM installed
I used the uninstall cmd on PEM (vs disable) and GMS remained on (even after a few reboots), hoping it stays that way. Notifications appear to be working again.

Okay, thank you for the info. Google apps (and notifications) have been working for me since the last disabling of PEM, but i haven't dared to restart the phone since then...
Did you ever experienced google disconnection after firmware update: I mean after an official update (2 in this month) Google Play Services seem to "freeze" (no notifications from apps) and if I try to disconnect my Google account I cannot login again for a variable period of time (Google server unreachable).
