I've had this happen with two SMS apps and I want to stop it from happening.
When do not disturb is on, incoming SMS makes my phone vibrate and continues to vibrate no matter what.
Is there a setting that I'm missing that controls this?
Thank you!

Was the screen on, when you got SMS or screen was off and it vibrated? Basically I remember my Pixel 2 some other phones too have/had a setting under do not disturb do this when screen is off and do that when screen is on...check it. Yesterday my DND was enabled and I did receive a call on Whatsapp which rang. Before the call, my screen was still on that is why, it rang.

This happens in the middle of the night when I know my screen should be off. I'm thoroughly perplexed.

When I receive a phone call, SMS or MMS the screen switch itself on and that’s not good when the phone is in my pocket. (I'll answer my calls via bluetooth)
Would it be possible to disable screen at least when receiving SMS/MMS?
Thanks.
This would be a good fix.
This is indeed an excellent idea. If someone could somehow develop something that allows the screen to come on to show you what is happening, but the screen stays insensitive to touch, that would save me a lot of headaches.
The "lock screen" feature almost does this, but not quite.
I'd like to third/forth this idea. I often find myself hanging up a call as I pull the phone out of my pocket, or launching random apps when a message arrives. Very irritating!
I would certainly agree to that too. I am forever calling random people while driving because of my phone being on my belt and then recieving an SMS

AFAIK message on screen will only prevent the message itself to be displayed automatically when you receve a message. Your screen will still be switched on and a lot of funny things happen when it's in your pocket.
Hi all, I have just got my Galaxy Note from South East Asia. I just want to check whether this is a bug or everyone else's gnote is doing the same thing.
Like the title says, When I received a text message, gtalk notifications, whatsapp notifications, gmail notifications or any other notifications, the vibrations that is coming from the phone is the 'Incoming Call' Vibration instead of 'Notification' Vibration. The 'Incoming Call' Vibration is the long buzz and the 'Notification' Vibration is the 2x short buzz. So when I am chatting with multiple people, I get multiple long buzzes, this is driving me crazy, not just that, this is draining my battery as well..
I hope someone can help me, I want and need the vibration, but I just want the 2x short buzz..
p.s. I have played around with the settings with every single apps and the phone settings, but nothing seems to fix it. I have also done a hard reset, problem still there.
Is anyone else having this problem? If this is normal, then is there any apps or anything that can change this? Thank you in advance for any input..
Can anyone just let me know what are their notifications vibrate and the incoming call vibrate? I just want to know whether mine is acting normal or not? could some help me in replying please?
this is common even my phone vibrates long.. try keeping a short tone like single beep or something. This may reduce the duration.
U can actually set different vibration intensities for incoming calls, notification and haptic feedback ...what i did was to reduce notification and haptic feedback to zero so that my phone only vibrates for incoming calls. go to settings/sound/vibration intensity.

the problem here is that the vibrate that I receive for incoming calls & notifications (sms, email, etc) are the same. when setting my phone on vibrate and when I have it on silent, I cant tell the difference whether it is incoming calls or just a sms text when I have the phone in my pocket. this makes me to respond quickly to my phone whenever it vibrates, because i use my phone as business use, since I thought those vibrates are incoming calls.
thanks to you both for the reply.
Textra is waking up my screen when do not disturb is enabled. It's doing it on both my n9 as well as my wife's n9. It did NOT do this on my s8+ nor my wife's s7 edge. Any idea how to stop this? It woke me up twice last night. It doesn't play sound just turns on the screen.
Do not disturb settings messages set to none.

Have you enable this setting in Textra ?
In Textra settings/Customize Notifications/Notification Style /Wake up Screen .....Always ...yes ,no....... ?
I leave my phone not to wake up screen, whether sound enabled or silence etc .
It just plays a notification sound .
Thats good enough for me !
Works fine .Does not light screen up .

I have it set to yes except for silent. I want it to turn on the screen throughout the day but not at night. That's the whole point of do not disturb.

Yes, i understand.
On my old Note 8 i had this similar issue. re screen waking up .
Anyway
I just tried "do not disturb" /volume mute etc.
on my Note 9 SM-N960F and i use Textra default sms.
My device does not wake up.! /light screen.
Only blue notifications light starts flashing.
This is my "do not disturb" settings and Textra
settings.
See screenshots
If your settings are similar as mine and your
Note 9 model number similar ?
It should work as set by you?
Only difference, i noted i have set Textra to never wake,
where you have it Yes except for silent.

Does your screen wake up when do not disturb is turned off? I want it to wake when dnd is off but not wake when it's on.
My s8+ worked perfectly with textra.

Yes, if i turn setting in Textra to "Yes except when on silent", screen turns on, when do not disturb is off.
Just tested it now, waking up when do not disturb is off .
However,
i choose not to light screen up at all and rely on sound., thus Textra setting is set to no. Thus I don't have this issue.
Further,
I set Textra to your settings.
"Do not disturb" and Textra to" Yes except when on silent"and my results is the same as yours.
Screen lights up in Do not disturb mode.
My opinion is that it is a Textra issue, not phone.!
As you using 3rd party messages app
Not the stock messages system app.
I would contact dev of Textra and explain
conflict that Textra somehow does not
read/interpret Do not disturb (phone) as silent in Textra
(on the Note 9) .
I'm sure the dev can test this "compatibility reading " issue, somehow ?
Good luck
What may be the setting that I'm missing as in silent mode and no other app does this, only incoming MMS/text messages cause a vibration (which wakes me up when phone on nightstand).
Have volume on minimum.
Even selecting a text message that was previously received causes a vibration ?
Try "Textra", I've just this sms/mms app for years now.

Change settings maybe from priority only to total silence.?
I'm fnding that WhatsApp calls don't vibrate when I'm out of the app (eg screen is off, or using another app)
The strange thing if I'm in the app itself, the vibrate works fine for calls, but the moment I'm out of it, I only have the dropdown notification but no vibration.
I'm on version 2.19.308 of WhatsApp.

I have a Pixel 2 xl and I'm also having this problem. I've missed several calls because I always have my phone on vibrate at work. It's really annoying.
