Has anyone been able to unlock their TF701 with the Asus Unlock Tool? I get the dreaded unknown error message that plaqued previous Transformers: unknown error occurred , which may be a network error please try later.
On previous Transformers I know it had to do with serial number issues. I checked the serial in settings and it matched the serial on my box. I literally just charged my tablet, and then immediately tried to unlock so I know it's not an app issue or anything like that. I don't even have Google synced. I just turned on Wifi and tried to unlock. I noticed that I was running an older firmware so I decided to manually upgrade that (auto upgrade didn't work even after clearing those two apps, can't remember their names) and the same error occurs. Tried rebooting of course and still nothing.
I'm guessing the unlock tool just isn't working right now? Sucks since I'm going to end up restoring all my stuff and then having to format during a future unlocking.
OP here with an update. I contacted Asus Support and they suggested a factory reset. Didn't think it would work but tried it anyways and of course it didn't. Any ideas out there...anyone successful with unlocking their 701?

Thanks for the reply but this isn't about root. This is about unlocking the device.
I'm ready to unlock too. Haven't tried yet, as after reading your experiences in guessing Asus needs to update. But if I can do anything to help, please let me know.

i unlocked the ww 45, then manually upgraded to ww 47, because no matter if locked, automatic update didn't work.
what i noticed is, the unlocking made an extra 2 or so reboots and seemed to hang somewhere in between for a couple of minutes.
however it worked.
also nothing prevented me from reinstalling the update again, even already running ww 47.
another thing i noticed is, a wd my passport drive shows up as a memory card, but updating from there is not possible.
in my case it only accepted it from the 'internal' microsd (i used a 64GB sandisk)

Once you try it, let us know. I still can't get it to unlock. I have the US version.

I am not 100% sure about this but if you don't have your google info entered then the unlock utility cant flag your device in google play to prevent you from downloading DRM content. So unless it succeeds in that connection it won't unlock.
I suppose if you really wanted DRMed content you could get another google play account and unlock..... then maybe not. Personally I dont care about DRMed stuff, I refuse to use software which automatically assumes I'm going to pirate, and cripples my device in the process.

Hmm...that's a pretty good theory! I did end up syncing my Google account late last night after I did a factory reset and it still doesn't work. I just double checked that my account is indeed active and synced and it is. I tried the unlock tool again just in case and same error message. I don't understand why something straight out the box won't unlock with their own tool.
I'm going to wait, I guess, for a recovery before I flip out about this. I seem to remember having to wait for the tool after I finally got my tf201. After owning that device, I really want to make sure I am confident of the hardware. So far, though, it seems great.

It finally works. Tried just now and worked the first time. Must have been an issue with the Asus servers.
Problems: No sim card (I have a different network), unable to download or update anything, even over wifi. (Wifi does work for internet browsing.) Runs slowly.
First time Captivate owner and first time delving into tampering with electronics. Most of my "programming" experience is just learner's stuff: html in HS with a little JavaScript, then some intro to C++ a while back in my freshman year of college, so I'm not completely useless when it comes to files, codes and such.
My phone was stolen a few months back and a relative gave me a Captivate to use when they upgraded since the main function I was missing was the ability to take and send pictures instantly (for work and family). The phone has no SIM. I thought about trying to unlock it and using it as my primary phone but after a few days research it seems it wouldn't do me any good since it is an AT&T phone and I have Sprint, so not compatible networks (as far as I can tell).
Still, there are certain apps that I use on my tablet that would be easier to use on a smaller, more portable device. They are current Google Play apps. but the phone is on android 2.1 and still has the old market. I'm sure I'll need to update to a more current android version (which I'm not sure how to do). Without the SIM, it won't let me update through the phone itself. I thought I'd found a helpful response in another thread on how to update via USB, but it went to a mediafire file that was no longer available. It seems as though the lack of a SIM card is preventing any downloads, even over wifi. I can browse the internet, check email, log into facebook, etc... but at the same time even some of the current apps already on the phone won't work. I've tried looking to see if a sim is required for downloads to work, but so far I haven't found anything particularly useful.
Where/how do I update to the current version of Android? Do I need to update the ROMs & Kernels as well? What other files would need updated to "bring it up to speed"? What order? (I've read that is important.) I'm generally quick at picking up on things like this and looking forward to learning from you all.

There's a guide on here to unlock the Captivate. You should be able to use it on Sprint once it's done.
As for updating, the cappy lost Samsung support a while ago but you can flash a custom ROM from here which should give you much better results thant stock firmware. You can follow a guide to do so, it's fairly straight forward.
If you do go for a custom ROM, I suggest you stick with JellyBean. Kitkat is a bit heavy for the Captivate.

I've been going over the Wiki as I've had time. I installed Kies Mini and have almost upgraded from Eclair to Gingerbread. I'll try looking again at the unlock guides. The only ones I had seen before required a sim card. I thought sprint wouldn't be compatible since it doesn't use a card though? And any ideas why I can't download from the market over wifi?

Not so sure why you can't download over wifi, that should work w/o a sim card (as long as you're connected to your Google account).
And Sprint does use sim cards (just like any other carrier). You don't really need another card to unlock. But being with Sprint, don't you have a sim card? Otherwise, you can always get one from them for fairly cheap.

Just finished the update to Gingerbread. Couldn't download with Eclair, but Gingerbread was letting me (albeit slowly). If I update to Jellybean would that fix the slowness?
I don't think my last phone had a sim, at least I do not remember seeing a card. It was a Galaxy S3..
---
Just looked it up:
Unlike the other carriers with Galaxy S3 phone availability, Sprint opted not to have a removable SIM card for their version. Instead, the SIM card is embedded into the S3 phone itself.

Even so, my last phone was stolen, otherwise I wouldn't have needed this one. Thanks anyway though. I'll see if I can get a sim card. My current phone doesn't have one either (Samsung Seek) When you mentioned sprint had sims, I thought I'd lucked out, but nope! lol
----
Just got off the phone with sprint. I only told her it was a galaxy S, but she said that sprint doesn't use sim cards anymore, they're for international use. Not sure how accurate that is but I'm going to try unlocking it without a sim and see if it'll work. If not they said they could try to get one for me. ^_^ Either way, looks like my main project will be speeding it up (if possible). Thanks again!

Getting a JB custom ROM on it will surely speed it up. As for the download speed though, not a whole lot can be done. It has some old hardware and it also depends on your router. That being said, a newer kernel could help.
I found finally a thread for rooting my phone. (All the other methods I'd found seemed to have issues with GB). Worked great! Found the Galaxy_S Unlock by helroz (after tons of searching), but it's "not available in your country". I'm searching for a way to get it downloaded anyway, but don't know if it'll work w/ GB. Tried Superoneclick and it said device was already rooted (true) but when I tried to get the unlock code, nothing happened. It apparently doesn't work with GB, only Eclair & maybe Froyo. So right now it's either get helroz's app downloaded or I have to go back to Froyo some how (since going back two builds is apparently not recommended), find a way to unlock it, and upgrade it again. I'm going to keep looking, but if anyone knows how a better way to unlock it, I'd appreciate it!

You don't need another root if it's already rooted. I'm not sure about the steps to unlock the Cappy but it's possible that it needs to be on a older version.
Hi everyone,
Long time reader, first time poster. This website really is the best source for all your galaxy needs. I learned how to root my first Android, a galaxy S4 here. Anyways, I'm here because I have scoured the internet trying to find a certain ROM that it seems no one has made.
I have a Galaxy S6 Active. recently, I lost service with AT&T, and I want to install a custom ROM on it. Here's the things though. This is no longer an AT&T phone. I don't care about KNOX, or if I can make or receive phone calls on it. I want to turn it into smething completely different. Linux OS, perhaps. Just an external hard drive. If I had to put a name on what I'm trying to find, it would be "NFC device with bluetooth and WIFI capabilities". I hope I'm explaining myself clearly. It's no longer a phone to me, but a blank canvas I can tweak and morph into something completely new.
Lmao good luck. Root.bounty @ $1550

Trust me, I did. There are so many cool ROMS out there. I guess what I'm not understanding is....well... why?
So, a cell phone (if you can even call it that any more, lol) is a piece of hardware with software on it. If I remove ALL of the software from it, Everything... even ODIN. Aren't I left with something similar to a laptop with a formatted hard drive? Can't I put something like an MBR on it and start from scratch? That's what I'm looking for. Not some program that can simulate kit kat or lollipop. I want something that will wipe it down to where all I see on the screen is a flashing C:\

I don't think you understand how these phones work, you could indeed somehow wipe all the partition of the phone in Odin which if you didn't know isn't part of the phone but a computer program, but if your clever enough to build an OS by yourself to run on the phone then Thumbs Up! & you'd need to unlock the phones bootloader and have very expensive hardware and software to even get into this phone, your idea is good but impossible sorry to burst your bubble my friend.

mind=blown. OK, so that is something I was not aware of. So, to try and understand it better, that is like me trying to login to my laptop's BIOS and it having password protection that only Dell knows the code to?

Yep, pretty much. Except in this case, it's both Samsung and AT&T's business agreements that have it locked down. Until someone cracks it, or they unlock it, we're all in a holding pattern.

Yes, big business definitely has us at their mercy. Plus I heard a rumor that the guy who unlocked the previous bootloader now works for them.
So, how would one, with only ODIN, a USB cable, an internet connection, and alot of time on their hands, go about trying to unlock this bootloader? I mean, I know there are many people out there who are WAY more qualified than me and have way better equipment. But, hey, I could do it. I'm coming into this with no frame of reference or previous experience. Meaning I have the ability to see the problem from a perspective that no one ever has before. Who knows... and I can't fail if I never even try
Just read that Three is discontinuing it's WiFi calling app as most phones have this as standard now. I have no reception in my flat so this has been a lifesaver. I have figured out how to activate the volte and WiFi calling toggles but only the volte seems to work (I get an icon when on 4g). Has anyone been able to get this to work on any UK network?

If it doesn't show as 'Provisioned' under the *#*#4636#*#* menu, it's not available. You're using OOS, right? I'm not sure there's any method to force the issue. Maybe a Magisk module?
Or start using Custom ROMs?

I'm using OOS Oreo. I'm trying to remember what I did to get the toggles under sim preferences. Before then I didn't even have the toggles
Is this operator dependent or phone software. No idea how to add a module but should be able to figure that out.

Adding the Toggles to Settings is the easy bit. It doesn't mean a thing as far as getting the functions working though. The ROM, and specifically the telephony parts of it, need to have all the necessary code added. We know that 3 can add the bits needed on phones where they have control over the software updates. Otherwise it's down to the Manufacturer/ROM.
You never know, OOS Pie might have this working natively. You could ask in the Community Beta thread to see if anyone there has any idea. Or wait a while longer until OOS Pie is in Stable channel. (I assume you don't want to try the Community Beta?)

I'm not surprised. I doubt it's high on their list of priorities. Especially as a lot of this stuff is carrier specific. They probably expect the carriers themselves to add the necessary modifications before the units get into the hands of customers, which is what happens most of the time. Except, Oneplus phones are usually bought off contract as nobody here offers them with contracts.

The provision toggle shows up now when I am back in the UK. Might try to install lineage to see if it helps.
Did you end up getting this to work on lineage? I'm having the same problem and the three in touch app has just stopped working for me.

Haven't gotten around rooting and installing it. I have volte in most of the flat so the phone kinds works at home.
Fair enough, thanks for the reply. If I end up getting it working I'll report back
Tried to figure out how to instal lineage on my phone but I got stranded after installing ADB on my laptop. My problem is that most of the guides assumes that you know what you are doing in minute detail and therefore leave out quite a lot of steps. It also seems like you will lose all your data which means you need to back it up and to back it up you need to root the device which whips the data... Installing twrp seems also to wipe your data which is a bummer as you need that to do the backup of your phone.
As you can see I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't
Tried today to install lineage and I cannot say I'm impressed with the various guides I found. The lineage os wiki page omitted various steps such as which entry you needed to edit in the environment variables. There are several to choose from. Nor did it not mention that you need to enable unlocking the bootloader. Had to Google that to figure out how to get around that error
Installing twrp didn't work as it didn't recognise the file. Tried three different workarounds that didn't work. (File extension, dropping the twrp image onto the command window after typing the fastboot flash recovery line and moving the image to the desktop and the ADB folder.
Why do the people who write these guides assume you have extensive knowledge of installing ROMs instead of including all necessary steps. Needless to say, I failed to install lineage.
Rant over.

Any success? I have finally got lineage 16 on my phone but not been able to get WiFi calling working
No, ended up getting a new phone unfortunately.
Hi all. I'm new to the site, so if I'm posting in the wrong forum, please let me know. I hope someone can help.
When I left my last company, they allowed me to take my Note 9 because it was paid in full. New management came in and set up Knox MDM. Because my device was paid for by them, they added my device to Knox and put it in Kiosk mode. I can no longer do anything on it but send/receive calls. I contacted Verizon, and they said even though i pay for the service, the device is technically still owned by the company and couldn't help me. So, i'm left with either buying a new phone or asking new management to remove me from knox. They will not, so I was hoping someone knew how to remove knox, possibly through rooting the phone. However, I can't enable developer mode. When I click on the build number, i get a message saying the feature is disabled by knox.
this is just a suggestion, I'm not saying to follow it. wait for someone else to confirm it's an OK idea or a terrible one.
using a PC or even another rooted phone you could run ADB and remove Knox packages. pretty sure you can do this successfully on newer phones but with Knox ''activated'' and doing stuff I'm not sure.

this is just a suggestion, I'm not saying to follow it. wait for someone else to confirm it's an OK idea or a terrible one.

Thanks for the advice. I'm good with that route, and I'm good with wiping the phone to root it. I installed ADB on my laptop and connected the phone, but it when I run adb devices, nothing is returned. I assumed it was because the phone wasn't in developer or usb debugging mode. So, I was hoping there was a way to do it without needed access to settings.
oh crap yeah, I forgot you did say that. curious do you still work for this company ?
either try doing ADB thru the recovery (never tried it, know nothing about it but it's a thing) or give a factory reset a try. the reset should at the very least kill off the companies settings though I'm not sure how much use that'll be.
flashing appropriate firmware with Odin should work for you too.

Thanks 3mel. I'll give those things a whirl. I'm not employed with them anymore, which is why going to new management isn't an option. A friend of mine still works there and they told me that management asked verizon for the device id's for the last 5 years and just put them all on knox. For them, $1/mo for a devices no longer in use by them outweighed the potential of missing devices in the wild.

Hello dear friend, I have the same problem, did you find any solve for this issue? I will be happy if u will share the method)
Hello,
I have a similar case.
without debug mode, adb devices doesn't list any devices.
there is really no way to flash a custom ROM on this phone, without log into the old google account?
