(** I'm a yapper, which translates to a novel by the time I'm done posting. I can't help it ? SCROLL HALFWAY DOWN TO GET TO THE ACTUAL QUESTION**)
I'm having a lot of fun getting back into rooting and stuff!
Life is so crazy with work and kids, I spent less and less time tinkering with Android, and then with my Samsung and zte phones, it became a hassle, so I went stock for a long time (I honestly don't even know how I could stand it ?)
Anyways, my e4 last year got me back into the swing of things, and this e5 I just got reminded of what I've been missing!
But in my haste to get twrp, magisk, and xposed again (FINALLY!!! ???), I didn't check into if we could update AFTER, or if we could/should of updated BEFORE.
I KNEW they're was an update, but I said eeeffff it, and flashed everything from the build I was on
JamesT
Stock rooted
Android 8.0
Build OCP27.91-150-5-1
The update is ocps27.91-150-5-1
Is it even worth the update?
Have to what flash stock recover, dl & flash update, then flash twrp again?

You need to be full stock to take the OTA updates. No root, not even unrooting will work. You can keep the bootloader unlocked but everything has to be stock. And there might be a couple OTAs, so get them outta the way and THEN do your rooting and whatnot.
Unless you don't mind being behind that's basically how it works out, so the next OTA you'll have to do it that way too.

OK, I've read so much that things are just getting jumbled in my brain now. There's so much information in these threads that I don't know where to start. The world of Android apparently moves too fast for me to keep up. I've got a Verizon LG G2 that is stuck on 4.4.2, software version 24A. Right after I took the OTA KK upgrade I rooted with IORoot25. I don't think I've done anything other than root, however I have somehow can create the mobile hot spot without permissions. Not sure if there was an .apk that was put on when I rooted or how I did it because it was over a year ago.
Ever since I rooted, my phone tries to push OTA updates but they are always unsuccessful. Every morning I have to hit "Install Later" becasue it tried over night and failed. Besides this being a bit annoying, I haven't been concerned becasue the only OTAs since I got 4.4.2 was supposedly some small patch that didn't really do much (from what I read). But, the other day it notified me that it wanted to push Lollipop and needless to say, I want it.
My problem: I don't know what the hell to do! Besides rooting, I'm pretty sure the only thing I've done is download Flashify and backup my stock recovery. Flashify doesn't show that I have a custom recovery, nor do I ever remember installing one. Just whatever came with the IORoot25. Oh, and it looks like I Quarantined LGSetupWizard using App Quarentine. Pretty sure that's it. So, where do I go from here?? I'm wanting to move to Lollipop, then possibly de-bloat it, and would like a custom recovery so that I can create nandroid backups and possibly start trying out other custom ROMs.
I had an OG Droid for years and would flash ROMs frequently until I upgraded to a RAZR MAXX. Once I got the MAXX, and now the LG, all I've really done is root and hack the wifi, so I'm REALLY out of the loop now! Everything seems so complicated becasue there's just too much info out there. Could somebody please guide me in the right direction to make this as smooth as possible??
Thanks for reading and helping a NooB out. Ugh...can't believe I have to start calling myself that again!!
You could 'freeze' the update so it doesn't pop up every morning. IF you want to update- you can unroot it and then take the update and re-root it and fix the hotspot thing. I'm in the same boat, I'm about to do the same myself.

Thanks for the response. Hoe do I "freeze" the update? If I do decide to take the update and re-root, and especially if I start loading custom ROMs, I know I'm going to want to do this in the future. I've been getting theses OTA update notifications everyday for months now!!
Also, what's the easiest way to unroot?
AS long as you are running stock I believe you can accept the OTA without unrooting: I haven't done it yet as I haven't had a few free hours, but I'm going to try it tonight.
there are plenty of apps that allow you to freeze apps- titanium Backup Pro is one that comes to mind.
I just bought this & it came with 4.4.2. Can I root this or put any roms on it? Maybe should I even update it?
I was always an iPhone guy, but I love the screen on this Samsung and I'm glad I made the switch.
I want to figure out what I should do before I update and risk never being able to put a rom on it, or if it's even possible to do so on AT&T.

I was in the same boat as you as I bought my Note 3 used about a week ago. I have been rooting phones for quite some time and this (by far) was the most confusing and took more effort. There's several different S/W versions and it gets confusing. Also, the bootloader is locked so there ain't much you can do in respect to unlocked bootloaders. But there are some "work arounds".However, a few questions---
Are you on 4.4.2 NC2? If so you can "Towel root" is quite easily, install busy box and safe strap then do upgrades from there or you can stay on NC2. I made the mistake of bypassing and simply using ODIN to 4.4.4 NL1 then to NL2. I would have to revert back to NC2 and wipe everything to have root, so I've been staying put on NL2...which is smooth, LONG battery life and runs great. I'm toying with upgrading to OC1/OC2 but I'm [still] researching if it's better---Lollipop has been getting mixed reviews.
I really wish there was a threat showing each S/W version from the first to last with a brief description of each and which ones are up gradable via ATT OTA, which ones to root, comparing battery life and stability.

I'm on 5.0 right now. D:
Alright I'm on N900AUCUCNC2 now, completely stock. Did Towel Root and I'm downloading Root Checker to see if I'm actually rooted.
From now, can I upgrade through AT&T in "about phone" to 5.0 Lollipop?
Have n901t. Rooted it after being talked into 5.0.1 by Tmobile rep trying to improve it. No good. So went back down to KitKat and rooted that. Obviously I cannot receive ota update for 5.1.1 now. Do I just get the stock file and flash with the phone as it currently is? Or should I flash KitKat back to it's un rooted state before updating phone? Am still a novice in the taking control of your smart phone world and would rather not brick something if it can be easily avoided. Thank you.

You could get the official software and use odin to install it but there are a couple of things you need to be aware off. First once you upgrade to 5.1.1 you cannot downgrade back to kit kat and you will be stuck on that version, secondly in order to achieve root you might need to install a custom kernel before rooting. For that last part I would suggest you hit the forums since there a couple of posts about rooting this new version.
don't know if I am ready to start messing with kernals yet. Am patient. New root will show itself before we know it. Did the update through Odin. So far smooth sailing. Tested Simpsons tapped out since with 5.0.1 it lagged so bad it was unplayable. Still not as smooth as it was on KitKat but can still play it at least. Haven't tinkered with anything else yet.
Personally I'm waiting it out. I don't like not being able to go back, and I've had 0 luck with 5+.. So I'll wait until someone "fixes" it, if ever.
I bought this phone today, and it was on 4.1 or something - some rom. I came back to XDA the wonderful fairy land to make my dreams come true.
Alas, and as always (6th phone in a row) I am lost. I rooted successfully the 4.1 (I forget what it *actually* was) and that was fine. It worked. I used a DooMLoRD special secret package that he made specifically for us Canadians, I don't know how I found it either as it was buried deep in a different thread. As far as I know the 'perf'(..?) exploit has been patched by Sony.
Seeing how I haven't been around here in about 10 to 16 months, I forgot how everything works. I upgraded my device to the official 5.1.1 expecting to retain my root, and then intended on getting my hands a little dirty in the coming weeks (or at least get a Kernel that seeks to improve battery life)
my bootloader is still locked. I will note, however, that Kingroot, the APK succesfully got me rooted. But that app is weird, and I don't know if I trust it... I also don't know what would happen if I tried to flash a new kernel.
ANYWAY THANKS FOR READING THIS
Search tool is a gift, I have been and will continue to be searching probably way too intensely for a fix or some help.
Cheers to all

I am getting older, really older..
Everyday for a year or so, I did not download Lollipop when asked, because my phone was rooted. Someday, I planned to read up on how to update my rooted phone but never got around to it.
Today,I saw the update message and said WOW, a new version of Android, it sure took T-Mobile long enough. I thought, is my LG G4 rooted, and I thought NO, so there is no reason not to download and install this now. I downloaded and installed Lollipop (622MB).
Now my phone boots into TWRP (v2.8.0.1). I seem to have forgotten almost all of what I knew about rooting, updating and where to look for answers.
Hopefully, this phone can work again without my losing my CONTACTS.
So can somebody tell me what I need to do?
THANKS
I'm definitely getting older, I just realized/remembered that I have a G3 not a G4. Sorry.
So you made a backup of your data and now you are going to flash Lollipop from TWRP, right?

Almost.
A couple of Command Line entries restored Kitkat.

I backed up my G3 and then flashed Marshmallow from TWRP.
Everything good now.
