Hey.
I wonder if there is any way to install OTA updates (security updates) on a rooted phone with TWRP? And if not can completely disable the update service. I turned off notifications but I often see the update screen after waking up the phone.

No you need to be 100% stock for OTA updades.
In system\priv-app rename the 3c_ota.apk to 3c_ota.apk.bak. that will disable ota service.

Yes, as long as you don't unlock bootloader.
1) download VZW 4.4.2 OTA (Blur_Version.140.45.5.ghost_verizon.Verizon.en.US.zip) to your phone's sd card (it will be in the download folder);
2) reboot into recovery; and
3) apply update from sdcard.
Why not just wait for the OTA to get pushed to your phone?

I like to live dangerously? Lol! No, it is not for me.
Anyhow, people are saying they are keeping root when flashing the OTA from recovery. Would it make a difference if you flashed it from recovery vs. letting it install on its own the regular way wrt keeping root?

applying the update will work the same no matter how it's done. the update process performs the tasks listed in the updater-script.
Hi. I am rooted, have installed a few root apps (Lightflow, AdAway) but made no other changes (no custom recovery, have not disabled encryption...)
I wish to take an OTA update. I understand that OTA won't succeed if I have made modifications. Is it sufficient to do a full unroute in SuperSu? Or will the OTA still fail? Anyone have experience? Thanks!

You will need to be "out of the box" stock for OTA to flash.
You don't have to wait for an OTA. You can manually flash the stock image and skip the wipe user data part.
Will I get OTA from Google if I root my device but I keep the original recovery? if it is possible, how?

You might get the OTA downloaded if/when the phone checks for an update, but it will most certainly fail when it tries to install/update. No changes will be made so you don't have to worry about accidentally hitting the reboot to install button. It will abort and you'll just be back on what you have now.
I rooted my fire when it was at 5.3.10 and disabled OTA updates with adb, but i can't find out how to enable OTA again to update to 5.4. I also would like to keep root i was thinking i could do it with Flash Fire If i could enable OTA again. Does any one know how to do this?

Depends what actions were taken to block OTA updates. A time proven method is to rename DeviceSoftwareOTA.apk, typically by changing the extension to '.bak'. If you used a different method you'll need to reverse those steps. Keep notes so you can replicate/reverse in the future.

if you update normally (ota) you will lose root
and unlikely that 5.4 can be rooted yet
there maybe a way to update with FlashFire, but until it's tested, it's risky
Sent from my XT1080 using XDA Labs
Thanks
I got OTA updates back with ADB sideload but have not tried updating yet.
