Cannot unlock the phone with broken power button - Moto G5S Plus Questions & Answers

Hi all,
First of all, I would like to say that as a new user, I am not sure if this is the right forum to post this question at. If it is not, I would be happy to be redirected to an appropriate forum.
I have a Moto 5G plus phone. About 4 months ago, my power button has died. All attempts in fixing it have failed, so I ultimately downloaded an app called "Volume unlocker" that allowed me to lock/unlock the phone using the volume buttons. This allowed me to keep using the phone for the next 4 months without a problem.
4 months later, I encountered a new problem: when I try to unlock my phone, when I enter my (correct) password, the screen goes black for about 2 seconds, and then I am asked to enter my password again, in an infinite loop. Note that if I enter a wrong password, the phone says that the password is incorrect. This happened all of the sudden, without updating anything or installing a new app. When the phone is locked, I am able to do some stuff like using the camera, activating the torch, and using the Assistant (basically, all the stuff I can usually do without unlocking the phone). If I enter the assistant, and while I am at the assistant I am trying to unlock the phone, once I enter my (correct) password the phone says "System UI has stopped".
All the solutions I found online required either restarting the phone, doing anything that requires the power button, which as previously mentioned does not work, or having debugging mode on, which unfortunately is off and it doesn't seem like I am able to turn it on without unlocking the phone. So I am stuck locked and have no idea how to fix that.
At this point, I guess that any solution that would at least let me extract my personal data e.g. personal photos would be enough for now.
I have also talked with Motorala but they were not helpful at all.
Thank you very much!

two problems out of the blue! anyone else?

YESTERDAY my phone locked when i turned hit the power button. i havent used a password device lock since i got the phone months ago so i have no clue how it happened. no passwords would work but i simple soft reset solved the problem.
TODAY i noticed that i didn't have a data connection like usual, since i always have push email running. opened up active sync and all server info was missing.
all i did was a system restore and got everything back to normal.
I have never had any of these problems and i figure i would share them with you in case its a bug of some sort.
every now and then my phone will say its locked; i am unsure if its a button i hit or what; but i then have to use my stylus to be able to hit the small icon that says unlock (or something like that) (it is frustrating when you are driving and the phone becomes lock and you are trying to hit that small icon with you finger to unlock it).
I must say though i have never entered a password for locking nor has my phone required to enter a password when it says it has become locked; but still is wierd that sometimes my phone says its locked and i have to exit out of the lock through the small icon (which is difficult to hit with your finger)......

your situation is probably that you are holding in the red phone button too long. that will lock the phone. mine on the other hand locks and asks for a password.
You know, I had this today. Got my phone out and the screen was much darker than normal. After a bit of prodding I noticed the left softkey had changed to "unlock".
I have no idea why this happene, though just tried holding down the red button as you said and it did indeed lock. How strange!
Yep. Holding the END key results in your phone locking. I used to use this method to lock my phone before S2U2 did it for me.
I believe pretty recently, someone found a way to re-map holding the END key. Do a bit of searching and I'm sure you'll find it.
FYI- back to the topic. has anyone experienced either situation?

[Q] Security Locked Galaxy Conundrum

Hi guys,
I honestly thing that this is a unique situation. I have done a lot of searching, not just here but on Googlez as well, and no one seems to present a solution for me.
I have a Galaxy S that I received yesterday. I thought this was going to be a new hand set but it has been used. I know this because the previous user has set a pattern lock that I don't know on it.
So I have been trying to wipe this phone so that I can use it. I have tried a lot of avenues and yet nothing has worked. Here is what I have tried:
Reboot Into Recovery Mode : I believe I have tried every button combination to get into the recovery/maintenance mode so I can select wipe. However, when I try a combination (for example holding vol down and power) the phone gets to the initial boot logo, goes black, shows the same logo again, goes back, and repeats this in a loop until I let go of one of the buttons. When I do that it boots normally.
So this seems to indicate that the recovery mode on this phone is broken. Anyone else have any ideas with this bit?
ADB : Ok, so I turn the phone on to the lock screen. Then I plug in the USB cable to the computer. First, the device drive unsuccessfully installs on Win 7 every time. Then I fire up CMD, navigate to my ADB folder, and run 'adb devices' this just returns an empty list of devices attached.
I assume that based on the results of ADB that 'debugging via usb' is not turned no. I cannot turn this on because I'm locked out. Anyone know a way round this?
Special Code : Apparently there's a special code that can be entered on these Galaxy S devices when in the phone normally to wipe it. You have to enter this code via the Dialer (my mate tells me the code is '*2767*3855#'). I can't get to the normal dialer because I'm locked out so I try and use the Emergency Dialer. However, this proves unsuccessful as the phone just tells me that the code is not an emergency number.
At the moment I cannot see a way to fix this phone. It is impossible to find who used this phone before me.
Any ideas are welcome.
Before anyone Calls BS on this "Stolen Phone" its not and it is legit i can verify that the phone is legit and defiantly not stolen.
If I bought a "new" phone which is actually a "used" phone, I would return it!
And if it is legal, that should not be the Problem.
Anyway:
For the normal way to unlock the phone if you forgott your pattern you need the gmail account.
Without adb or 3-button-mode your phone is kind of useless.
He is just doing the combo wrong if you ask me. Hold the buttons until you see the initial bootscreen and then let go. If it doesn't work, 3 key combo might indeed be disabled
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
It was not purchased it was given as a competition and there was nothing stipulating that the handset would be new.
Obviously the competition handset had been used as a demo before being given out as a prize and they had forgot to factory reset the handset before giving it out.
Problem is Gmail, lock pattern, adb (doesn't seem to work as usb debug must have been left of) , and recovery wont work by the looks of things. Also tried to call the handset and press back button but must have updated FW
The people who held the comp have been notified but obviously where there is an android problem you guys know your onions so we ended up posting here.
I was just about to say the same thing as Kenneth. This is indeed a device won through a competition with Samsung them selves.
What combinations of buttons are talking about? I've tried and read about a lot, but would like to what you guys think the combination should be.
Any combination does seem to do the same thing though:
Hold down till the logo appears the release = Normal Boot
Hold down till the initial logo changes to a black screen = Normal Boot
VolUp+Home+Power is the one i am talking about
Wait until u get the white text logo and release as soon as you see it. If it doesn't work, combo is broken and the phone will indeed be useless until you can get the right pattern
You should try it like this and stick to the order!
Hold Volume up + Home (sqaure bottun in the midle) + Power on
When Galaxy S (white on black) appears you can release all buttons. It should go to recovery, if not this mode is disabled on your phone.
Even so I would try to swap it! If it is from Samsung itself that should not be a Problem at all.
OH... MY... DAYS!
Ok! The three button combination, and then releasing it as soon as the logo appeared, worked. I have successfully wiped the phone and am in.
Great advice guys. Thanks.
Thanks from me as well quick response and always awesome knowledge.
Oddly enough the combinations from vodafone uk and others were different so you guys are amazing.
Cheers Kenny
Thread moved to Q&A.
I am in the same situation and the 3-combo combination doesn't work .
It doesn't communicate either ...

[Q] Encryption - not being prompted for password at boot

I restart my phone daily, and after powering off, when I start it, I initially get the swirling dots, and then the screen to enter my pin ( white screen - not the lock screen). After I enter the pin, in get swirling dots again, and it then show me my home screen..
That is the normal behavior... Worked fine every day... Till today.
Today, when I powered off, and powered on, I never got the initial screen to enter my pin. After the swirling dots, it took me straight to my lock screen and asked for my pin. No idea what changed. I didn't decrypt my phone. Settings/ security still shows encrypted. I've restated 3 times, no difference. Straight to lock screen. Any ideas as to what has happened?
I'm on stock 5.0.1, rooted with auto root, boot loader unlocked. Nothing else. No change since the day I flashed 5.0.1 images. I did not disable encryption.
Edit: the only thing that comes to mind is that I installed last pass premium, and enabled it in accessibility. I then removed the app ( didn't like it) - not sure if that could have caused this issue?)
Looks like it is a known bug

I also had that problem, for me was the solution to go to security and change my password what i have set. So I don't select pin but password. Then restart the phone. If right is will ask for you password. And then go to you lockscreen. If it works you can switch back to pin again. Hope it helps

thank you for trying to help the op amyways
FWIW- I'm having this problem now/still... On two devices, oddly/incidentally.
I posted this elsewhere... But I'm having the same problem. Any thoughts? I can post more details, but don't want to repost this everywhere that I see people having the same unresolved problem.

* It used to be that when I did a reboot or shutdown and restart, I would have to enter a password before the system fully started.
* But now the phone boots into the phone without putting in my password. I can reboot the phone and it will boot all the way to the Lock screen, and I can unlock the lock screen with my fingerprint or my backup password.
* I am concerned that somehow my device is either no longer encrypted or that there is some setting which has stored the boot password.

I just got this too after I've uninstalled Greenify, which adds an Accessibility app, and I guess it triggered this.
Reset your password/PIN again, check the "ask at boot" option and that's it.

Note 9 suddenly asks for pin, doesn't take pin, can't power off

What happened:
Stock ROM, unrooted
I was using my Note 9 all morning, put it down, came back later and it asked for my pin. Biometric input did not work and can't get to the swipe screen.
What I tried:
I've entered the correct pin numerous times and it just tells me to wait 30 seconds and try again.
I can't use Samsung Find my Mobile since it was never configured
I can't power off, as it just asks for the pin again
I can't start in Safe mode, as it just asks for the pin again
Any help/suggestions would be most welcome

Long press power+vol down will force restart. But I don't see how it's going to help.
That worked!

Believe it not, rebooting was the key. After that, it took the pin and I was back in business.
Thanks for the tip! I had assumed there was no way to restart, so I'm super happy now.

Encrypted device with forgotten pattern

Hi all.
I had a OnePlus 3T years ago, i think it was 2017/2018. The screen got smashed and i the moved onto a newer one plus device with the thought of going back to this old device to recover images that are not backed up.
I've just got around to that and i think the device is encrypted. If i boot into safe mode, or normally i am asked for a pattern. I've now reached a point where if i enter a bad pattern 9 more times it will wipe all my data.
I'm unsure if the device is rooted or not,. I also tried Volume Down, Power and home button, held it down and here it asks for a pattern to decrypt the phone.
If i enter something it goes through a loading bar of trying to decrypt and then vibrates alerting me it failed.
Is there anyway i can regain access to this old device and the images that are stored on it?
Thanks
