Hi - a year or so ago I degraded from 5.1 to 4.x
I am now looking to upgrade to 6.1.
I need to be able to get 6.1 on, and then remove root & SU.
Can anyone help me with a guide on how to do this?

All of the guides seem pretty convoluted/outdated. I click the 5.0.1 and the thread is empty...
All I want to do is flash 5.0.1, or 6.1, or whatever is easiest.
I am currently on a flashed 4.4.2 - Rooted w/ Towelroot, but I would prefer NOT to be rooted when I upgrade.
Just a simple flash of the OTA 5.0.1 will do nicely, preferably with a security patch update prior to March 1, 2019. Having a hard time finding a simple guide to just simply flash it. Everything seems to be very complicated trying to keeproot, etc, which I am just not really trying to do.
I just want 5.0.1 or greater on an already flash 4.4.2 device. (I can't to OTA from device.)

The threads definitely aren't blank, I just looked at them. Since you're rooted it's not as simple as just flashing the update, you need to be on unrooted firmware to start with. The guides explain everything. Make sure you read everything and follow the directions exactly. You'll have to completely wipe your phone since you're rooted, but it's all explained in the guides.

Hi All,
Was just looking into the prospect of rooting and I came across a post that basically responded to a guy asking whether subsequent OTA/Official updates would revert the root. the response was:
this might well happen. To be sure that this won't happen, don't update, or wait for a rooted version of the update to be released

It's the bit in bold that's got me wondering. I have my Nexus running stock ROM but rooted (with locked bootloader). I have the problem with the WiFi which 2.2.1 claims to fix.....and I just wasting time thinking that this update might get released as a rooted version so I can just install and not worry about losing root?
Any help gratefully received.
Cheers
1. Already released as a rooted version (check the ROM section)
2. Really easy to root with rageagainsthtecage ...
Right I can ask you the question then......with the rageagainstthecage root method, is there anyway to install the update without flashing a new ROM...I'm ok with stock.
If you're rooted - install custom recovery and install pre-rooted ROM.
Or try to apply the stock update through stock recovery, if you have it.

Just install the OTA - it will unroot you.
then root with "rage"
check out modaco, he's got frg83 completely stock with root. just flash using custom recovery. I didnt do a wipe so everything stayed the same just updated to 2.2.1 and yes it seems the wifi issue was fixed.
Just get the stock rooted from geo411m's rom!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=559
The links here will also do it in 2 steps from custom recovery:
http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8419658&postcount=194
The geo411m link is a deodexed ROM and the one in the link above is not deodexed. Either way you get the fixes of the newer version.
Going forward, think of it this way with future updates:
If you apply the OTA, intending to lose root and then re-root, you always run the risk that all avenues of rooting (other than unlocking the bootloader) have been closed by the new ROM.
If you apply an update repacked for custom recovery, you don't have to worry whether the root exploit you used last time will still be valid.

Thanks for that - honestly not sure why I didn't think of it
Ahh found a flaw in my plan.....it seems that verification fails on my Vodafone Nexus One (UK). I'm guessing there isn't an upgrade path from Vodafone's Froyo update to this yet. Suppose I'll have to wait for Voda's 2.2.1
I'm looking to probably upgrade from my GS3 to the GS5. I've read some of the posts on here about rooting, but I'm still a bit confused. It seems that root is only available for 4.4.2, but then you can't keep root and upgrade to 5.0.1. Is that correct?
Also, could anyone point me to a thread that lays out the root method for the phone? I see a lot of people talking ABOUT the thread existing, but no actual links to the thread.
Thanks in advance!

Note that OTA 5.0 just got pushed by AT&T and if you take it, there is currently no way to root or downgrade to 4.4.2 to use towelroot. In fact if you try to downgrade after the 5.0 OTA, you will end up bricking the phone. I'm sure devs around are working on finding a way to root the OTA, but as of today there isn't a way. There is an alternate method using FireFlash which is in beta to install 5.0 on a rooted 4.4.4. Note that if you are just about to buy a S5, it might be preloaded with 5.0 which until probably some time in the future is not rootable.
I would suggest delaying your upgrade from S3 to S5 until someone figures out how to root 5.0 OTA.

Gotcha. I'm not gonna not upgrade simply because root may not be possible yet if it's already 5.0, but that's good to know. Thanks.
So here's the backstory, about a year ago I bought a fairly new Samsung S5 (SM-G900A) off of swappa.com. It's always been on Straight Talk, so I have never been able to receive AT&T updates. My problem with getting it to Android 5.0 is that my phone needs to be at 4.4.4. I can't find any firmware out there to upgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 since AT&T hasn't published their firmware. Any assistance/help/tutorials in finding a way to get my phone up to 4.4.4 would be much appreciated.

Are you rooted? Do you want root? 4.4.4 was not much difference from 4.4.2.

It's not rooted and I don't need root access. If root is an absolute must than I wouldn't have a problem rooting my device. I wanted 4.4.4 so I can upgrade to the stock AT&T 5.0 ROM.

Read and follow the instructions in post 1. READ THE NOTES SECTION at the bottom of post 1. You'll need to root with towel root first then you'll be able to flash up to 5.0. I don't know if any way for you to do it regular as i have never had straight talk.
I'm not very hacky or what you call it, my know-how in this region is not very good, so I'm hoping someone here is able to help me.
When I was in USA I bought myself a AT&T Samsung Galaxy S5 (G900A), paid it off and had it service unlocked (called AT&T and they unlocked it for me). Then I went back to Ukraine and now I want to to be rooted... and have lollipop.
I don't know how to upgrade it to lollipop... Kies and the phone says I have the latest firmware and I cant get it updated. On top of that, I've read in posts here that if I update before rooting it, I might be in trouble later on the road.
Towelroot V3 says that my phone is not supported so I can't root it that route...
I've read tutorials here about rooting with the ND3 update... first of all, I don't know what the ND3 update is and how to obtain it since I can't update my phone OTA in Ukraine.
How do I go about this?
More information about my phone (since I learned more information about this process).
Kernel date is Tuesday July 22 2014... towelroot is said to work for any before June 3, 2014... this is probably why my phone isn't supported.
Also, is it true that Android 5.0 removes the SD Card functionality???
Well, I got it rooted... thanks to muniz_ri!
I just went ahead and risked it, not knowing what ND3 or NG3 was.
My next step is flashing it to Android 5+ ... that is if it doesn't remove the SD Card functionality
Well, I found these instructions on flashing my G900A to a pre-rooted stock lollipop... the problem I'm having is with FireFlash... I can't seem to find that app anywhere.

SM-G870A Peace
Thank you!!!!!
Wait, I'm confused - you say you were able to downgrade your G900A to a rooted 4.x state? I thought root was impossible once you take the 5.0 update?

You can only if you didn't take on the 5.0 OC4 bootloader and kept OA1
I didn't take the 5.0 update since I am out of the country and OTA updates don't come here... but I did have the NG3 update... so I downgraded to ND3, rooted and went back to NG3... then I flashed a prerooted 5.0 stock ROM with OA1 (I think...) and now I'm using it...
Searching via cell isn't great for me at the moment. I've found a few threads with lollipop files to use in Odin. But I haven't read anything that says it's simple to flash them and downgrade properly from Marshmallow to Lollipop. Is there a tutorial/file thread already on here that I am missing via search? Is this something I can do without rooting?
Da hell is that chipmunk woman
Sammobile doesn't have the stock 5.1 firmware.. is that an omen against downgrading?
Most of the posts ive read are indicating Marshmallow is not able to be downgraded, bootloader locked.. looks like a dead end
It's a different boot loader, will not be able to downgrade. There is no root option at this time as well.

sorry, but i disagree. i just flashed from 6.0.1 to 5.1.1 using odin and firmware found here on XDA. I have no problems with phone so far.
At the time of my post months ago, this was not possible. It is very possible now, I have also done it.

This is for the AT&T model, I haven't been able to crack into mine. I have battery issues since marshmallow and want to go back to 5.1.1 as well... where did you get the files, and what process did you use?

following this guide for rolling back to LP, work for me downgrade from MM and getting root on LP.
Mine didn't... version DPH4, october 1, 2016 security patch, odin gave me an error something like level 4 > 3 and didn't start the reflash process. I was able to reflash the same 6.0.1 and its not the same as what was on there, so maybe the ota updates had a problem? I'm still locked out of downgrading.
Mine also from DPH4 oct 1, 2016. Having issue with lte, i cant receive call but i can make call. So im rollback to COI5 and follow the instruction from page 2. Get odin 3.11.1 to flash BL,AP,etc. Have you try with other usb cable?

i also have the at&t model, but used some info in this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/att-galaxy-s5/general/guide-merry-christmas-heres-t3516196
i used odin to flash full OI5 firmware, minus the bootloader file. Only use the AP, CP, and CSC files. the bootloader is the same. and really, i had already flashed the PA2 build earlier that day i remember now. would probably do that first. flashing the PA2, i used all four files, BL, AP, CP, and CSC . they both flashed the first time, if they dont then try a different cable first. usually that is my issue.
so , i flashed from 6.0.1 down to 5.1.1 pa2, then down to oi5. still have no problems other than getting root..... im focusing on bootloader now, i have unlocked them on htc's before, but havent tried any other phone yet. the work continues tonight.
