Hi
My wife and I each have a Moto G6, stock and unlocked, running Android 8.0 it came with. We just received a notice to upgrade to Android 9.0. Hot-spotting is critical to our phone use. Presently mine turns on hot spotting with no issues, my wife's I have to trick it into hot-spotting but once on it works fine. When I researched Pie (9.0) I found a lot of 2018 articles talking about how Pie broke their hot-spotting ability. I never saw a resolution to their problem. Consequently I am hesitant to let Pie install on our phones. Does anyone have info on the "breaking of hot-spotting" issue as it relates to the Moto G6?
Thanks
Mike
I haven't done any heavy testing, but I can connect from my pc to my phone without any issues, YMMV.

I just updated this a.m. to Pie. I don't use my phone as a hotspot, but I did go into settings to see if it would work. It does except I don't have it set up with a password (haven't set up a hotspot account with Verizon) so I'm thinking it would still work. That's all I can add, but maybe help
Just updated our G6 on Fi channel to Pie 9.0 and all is good. I confirmed that WiFi hotspot functions is working (WPA/2) ... just remember to turn off Data Saver as it won't otherwise turn on.
We have 3 associated Fi data only sim when traveling but use the Hotspot function for tethering when abroad.

So far we've chosen the not upgrade to Pie. Currently we can tether our phones to our laptops and the Roku. Not exactly following all the fine print from our phone service provider such that if we lost the ability to Hotspot they would not be of help. Given that we have a good thing going, I don't see enough benefit to Pie to risk losing what we have.
It would be nice to be able to get rid of the upgrade notification/nag so I don't accidentally hit install, but I'll just be careful of it popping up.
Thanks for your info.
Mike
Hotspot works here too, no problem.
Update
Well, that was July 23. Somewhere about Sept 12 both our phones were no longer able to hotspot. It turns on, but won't provide the internet. I have to assume our service provider somehow sends a signal that prevents sharing the internet even though hotspot is on.
After that we let one phone update to 9.0 (pie) to see if we could reactivate the hotspotting we used to have, to no avail.
In the meantime I have setup a USB tether from a phone to our laptop with an app from ClockworkMod. That does the internet from our phone to the laptop. But having a cord is a little clumsy and it doesn't help us with connecting the Roku. So it's a temporary fix.
If my question is not inappropriate...
Would rooting the phone give me the ability to hotspot and share the internet signal without the service provider knowing and blocking that ability?
Thanks in advance
Mike

I've purchased a Milestone X720 for my wife, but I found the internal WiFi to work erratically at best.
It seems like it has no problem connecting to Google.com webpage (also it can sync mails and contacts), but when trying to access any other webpages (bbc.co.uk, espn.com, etc.) using the browser, it's always timing out. I know it's not a problem with my WiFi / internal network / router /internet connection, because I can navigate just fine using my HTC Desire or home laptops.
It worked for a while yesterday afternoon, then this morning wasn't able to connect to any website.
The wifi connection is using DHCP, and it shows a correct internal IP address and an excellent signal level. I don't think there's much more things I can tweak in the phone configuration, or isn't there?
Maybe it is a defective phone? Did someone experienced something like this? Should I return it and exchange it for a new one?
I'd appreciate any help.
Alex.
Actually, I've been having problems with my wifi. My wifi will stop working on any webpage at seemingly random intervals (I used to think it was when it went into sleep, but it happens when it's not in sleep now also). Eventually after restarting wifi so many times it'll glitch up and I have to restart the phone.
Providing your phone's stock (as in you haven't rooted it or the like) I'd recommend going to your carrier about the problem.
EDIT: I just checked through the posts on this board and some guy was having another problem with his wifi (different from both of ours though), he suggested getting WifiPowerSavingOff off the market, I'll try it and tell you if it fixes my problem. The only problem is it requires root access, I don't even know if it will fix your problem so you're better off sending the phone back (especially since rooting voids your warrenty). One other thing you could try is just a factory reset, it sounds like a software problem so that might work wonders, you might have to reactivate your phone afterwards though.
Well, thank you for your response.
WiFi was working OK when I came back from work, but is not working now.
The phone is unbranded unlocked, so I'll probably have to talk to the seller.
I tried to see if there was an update from Motorola, but every time I go to the System Updates it says that it is unable to connect to the server, so there's probably no available update for this phone yet.

If it's unlocked OTA updates (updating through the settings) are probably disabled, because installing OTA updates will make you lose root (I'm assuming your phone also is rooted if it was unlocked by the seller). do you know what baseband your using right now? Also, have you installed rom manager or anything that can make nandroid backups?
I might be wrong, but I don't think it's rooted, I think it's just the way it's sold, SIM free and unlocked from factory, not by the seller.
Baseband is 3GSMEPU91A_U_91.07.56I
Well if you wanna double check, just look to see if a superuser permissions app is installed (if you don't find one it's not rooted), I never knew they sold them unlocked (although I'm in the US... so I doubt they do here). All I can say is to try a factory reset then, if that doesn't work then talk to the seller. It sounds like more of a software problem since Google works.
In the end it seems there is some kind of incompatibility between the phone and my WiFi router (a Belkin G). Yesterday I managed to borrow another WiFi router (Netgear) and it works flawlessly when connected to this AP.
I will keep testing during the weekend but I'm pretty sure this was the cause.
Thanks Shiny for your help.
Hi. I picked up a milestone via Ebay two days ago and had similar wi-fi issues. After reading a number of forums I discovered that the problem lay with my router - Siemans Gigaset SE587 (Tiscali). The wireless channel or regulatory domain was set to auto channel 1. I think this confuses the phone so with the help of the router manual I disabled auto and reset it to channel 13.
Wi-fi works flawlessly now and it hasn't affected my other devices. The link below might help.
Hello,
I just upgraded from a S4 to a Droid Turbo and I tried starting my own hotspot in Fox Fi which I was able to do on my S4 no problem, and now it doesn't work. I'm on verizon btw.
it says "Your carrier has blocked WiFi mode in latest phone update. Please use USB mode or Bluetooth mode instead"
What the heck?! This is a huge deal breaker since I love making wifi hotspots when on the road or in airports.

There is a tethering app included with the phone that works fine. If you have to use a workaround like FoxFi you are obviously trying to tether on a plan that doesn't support it, therefore breaking your terms of service with Verizon. (Not saying I have a problem with that - I have done it many times myself, but if you are on an old plan and aren't paying for tethering then you really have no ground to stand on and cant complain too much.)
Hopefully we will get root sooner rather than later so that this won't be an issue.

Yea... I'm not going to pay $30 extra a month to tether my phone.. Never have never will. In the past I've always had Fox Fi which works perfectly. But now I'm starting to realize that only Fox Fi works on Samsung Galaxies and they haven't figured a work around for any motorola products.. Ugh. oh well. Like you said, can't complain too much..
Hopefully someone figures out root soon.
Hey guys, so the purpose of this thread is to find out if this is a bug or just how the mobile hotspot works on the P9. Everytime my hotspot is active, I can't use data on my device. No other Android device that I've used has ever has this issue with a mobile hotspot.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Thanks in advance!
Bump. Anyone experiencing this?
I have the same issue. Discovered it the day after i got it took it backed and swapped it, all was good. Then a few days later the new phone developed this issue. The only way around that I have found is forget the network on the device you are trying to tether to your p9, set up the connection again, return to the home screen on your p9, go and make a cuppa for 5 to 10 minutes then hopefully it will be fully connected and be able to share data. Long winded i know and if anyone else has a fix for this i would love to hear it as I'm bored of not being to use all my extra data I've just upgrade to when I want to.

Thank you for the response! Good to know it's not only me. Hopefully this is not an issue in the Nougat build.
I'd of thought a few other people would have this issue. I searched for ages when I first got the phone but couldn't find anyone who was experiencing it and gave up, then accidentally found your post months later. Is your p9 branded? Mine's a Vodafone.

I do not have the phone, so this goes first. But I am vodafone user. Bear in mind that some data plans do not allow tethering. If before you had android KK, there was no problem, but since LL, your phone is sending information of how the data is used. Then, vodafone blocks your connection.
You can try to use an app that is called Tether Unlock. You need root.

Thanks for your suggestion, unfortunately this was my first thought so got Vodafone to check this and I've haven't got any restrictions. Also I can get it to work after a bit of messing about but it's not ideal

So, when you tehter it only works for the first time? That's very weird. Have you tried other roms/updates?
This worries me a bit because i want to buy the phone and i tether every day with my car-radio...

Rogers in Canada. No Canadian carriers have tethering/mobile hotspot restrictions, so that's more of a US thing.

Yeah I try to power down after I forget the WiFi setting as a precaution but always have to forget the network then enter the pass key again for it to fully connect to my p9. I'm using the latest firmware from Vodafone but I don't think they have rolled out nougat yet. Not tried any other roms.
The other option is Bluetooth tether, that works fine for me but but the data speed sucks for browsing or streaming, might be an option to connect to your car radio though but I haven't tried it.

Just got my Mate 10 and have discovered exactly the same problem. As soon as I turn on mobile hotspot, then laptop works fine but all data stops on phone. Thsi is not a network issue as I'm on same network as my previous phone and my package specifically allows tethering.
As soon as I turn off hotpot, data works on my phone again.
Any proper fix appreciated...
Bump this thread. I rebranded my P9 3G+32G to EVA-L19C432 and this problem is happening since the rebranding. The phone itself just loses data when wifi hotspot is turned on while the laptop tethered to the phone has no problem navigating. Before with EVA-AL00C00 firmware, this was not the case. Navigation on the phone was not an issue whether or not wifi hotspot was turned on.
Does anyone have a fix for this problem?
Huawei P9 Lite Hotspot
Don' know if this will fix others but turning on hotspot turns off wifi and mobile data.
After some messing, I realised that I had to MANUALLY turn on mobile data to connect to the internet!
Seems OK so far.
Hope this helps.
How did you solve it? I have p20 pro and it is so ennoying not to be able use data on phone while sharing data... I'm on Vodafone UK and there is no restrictions on sharing data.
Hello , I have exactly the same issue with a Huawei Smart P. As soon as I turn on hotspot mode, the data connection stops and vice versa.
I thought it might be a carrier restriction, so I tried the SIM in a portable hotspot. It works, so it' s not that.
Bump. Same issue here. I have a Honor 9, Android 8.0.0. If I activate tethering, be it USB or Hotspot, the connection works only on the devices connected to the phone, while I can't use data on the phone itself. As soon as I turn tethering off, it works on the phone again...
Any help appreciated!

Bump. There must be some expert around here with a clue about what's going on
I recently updated to unlimited data with ATT, and found out after I updated to the new plan that I no longer able to turn the Tethering ON, which I only use it sometimes for may son's Tablet, when we are in an area where we don't have wifi like in my car.
My question, if I root my device, will I be able to have that function back, or is there other option?
Before someone sees search the forum, which I did, there so much information, I dont know which is valid anymore, any advice or link is much appreciated.
my device is:
sm-N900A
Android version 5.0
Base Band version:N900AUCSE0C3
Thanks in advances
no luck

My understanding is the issue is 5.0. 4.0 & 4.2 seem to be possible right now.
I doubt many have this problem as most people using smart view have a wifi connection they use to connect their devices to. My display adapter is one that doesn't connect to a network but instead basically creates it's on wifi connection that my phone connects to using WiFi direct. Before the Oreo update it worked flawlessly and still does on my S7 Edge.
Now when I try to connect to it on my Note 8 it's tries to connect and in some instances connects, but then almost immediately disconnects there after. I contacted samsung support and had them remote into it to see if they could get it to work. They told me it was a bug and that they would forward it to the development team, and that a fix should come soon for the bug. Well it's now going on three weeks since then and there has yet to be a update out fixing the issue. I emailed Samsung support reminding them of the issue and they said there was no reported problems related to smart view and that the next update should fix a lot of the bugs that came with the first update.
My hope with this post is that others might have the same issue or a work around, and if not, that maybe Samsung will eventually see it and find a fix for it. My S7 doesn't perform as well as my Note 8 so I'm hoping a solution comes soon.

Where can I find whatever it is that you did to make yours work? Mine works at my friend's house using WiFi and a Chromecast. But WiFi direct to a WiFi video adapter just doesn't work and it makes no sense. Did yours work on nougat?
No mines never worked still don't.
My wife's does out of the box. I have heard so many horror stories. His works his don't. This firmware. That firmware. No one really knows what's wrong with it.
Mine works about half way. I can't never fully connect. Like my tv acknowledges that my phone is trying to connect but my phone never does. My s7 did this too. But my note 5 worked great
Same problem. Galaxy S7 trying to mirror on Samsung Smart TV. Worked fine before Oreo. Now, it says it's connected, then says "Screen Mirroring ended" Help!
I have a Samsung Galaxy J7 and have the exact same problem using the smartview funtion that came with the phone. It will work fine for youtube videos but when I try to stream a video from other apps smartview will disconnect and then freeze my phone untill it restarts itself. Before oreo I had no problems using smartview without wifi. Have you heard of any fixes yet??
Still no workaround? :'(
