can we use it as usb mass storage?

Was wondering is there a way to use our galaxy as a universal usb mass storage device, using default windows drivers?
I've tried it but I can't seem to connect my phone to the pc unless I install either the usb drivers (extracted from Kies) or install kies itself.
In ubuntu can just hook this up no problem why in windows doesn't it work? or am I doing something wrong? Any help would be great.
thanks.
Wich part of Android Development Forum you dont understand?
why don't you can suggest me one or point me in the right direction or notify a mod instead of posting something that's not helpful and insulting?
and indicate why this would not go in development? yeah it can be in general but why can't it be in here explain the reason. This can be the initiation of someone developing a hack to allow to use our device in windows without INSTALLING the samsung drivers?
You don't need to install any samsung anything.
Settings -> About Phone -> USB Settings: Ensure "Ask on connection" is selected.
Plug in USB cable, connect to PC.
Select "Mass storage" on the menu. Your device is now connected and charging, but you don't have access to the data yet.
Now drag down the notification bar from the top of the screen. It says "Ongoing: USB connected. Select to copy files to/from your computer". Press that. Press "Mount".
Your Internal SD and external SD now mount on your PC and appear as drives.

Edit: If that doesn't work for you then there's something wrong. I haven't installed Kies on any machine I've connected the SGS to. It may be that you require Admin rights to install the usb drivers that are sent over as the device attempts to mount (not sure).
hmm that's weird. My machine says it doesn't recognize it when I do that. And all the machines I use I have to install the drivers for it to work even though I always use "use as mass storage"
hmmm I better do more investigation then.....
just tried this on a winxp machine without any driver/kies installed and yeah can't get to the sd card. It has an exclaimation mark next to the Usb mass storage device in device manager and there an "unknown" device detected in the "other devices" section of device manager....
Try the always ask option. Sometimes the use mass storage as default choice is a tad cranky.
If not, try on another usb port with another microusb cable. I've tried on 3 pcs/laptops and all 3 times no drivers were needed.
You also have to pull down the notifcation menu of the phone (once connected) and click the usb symbol and then choose "mount" (yeah, kinda sucks)

the drive that it installs when you connect your device to your PC with selecting USB Mass Storage is a normal USB driver, like when you plug in a normal memory stick...
Check your usb port or cable and try other ones
Or install Kies then uninstall it.
It will leave the Samsung USB drivers installed as they are in a seperate folder.
really weird could it be a winxp problem?
At work usb mass storage doesn't work UNTIL I install the samsung drivers. At home tested on a win 7 machine without installing any drivers and it works.
Would front usb port be different to teh back usb port? It's just that front usb port doesn't work if I don't install drivers, after install drivers works fine.
hmm I should test the back usb port. It's pissing me off how I can't use usb mass storage at work until I install the drivers (or would it be a windows update issue how windows don't have latest usb drivers?)

both win7 and xp require to install that usb driver unless you've plugged it in before... you definitely don't have to install the samsung drivers before you use the Mass storage function as my office computer (XP) is not allowed to install any other driver/software apart from normal USB mass storage driver in which it's pre-installed in your PC when you install the OS...

PC not recognizing Captivate after Root

Hi,
I have rooted my Captivate and now I cant get the device to be recognized in windows 7 (64-bit)
I have tried installing the "SGH-i897_Captivate_USB_Drivers_5_02_0_2" drivers for Win 7 (64-bit); enabled USB debugging on the phone and also selected USB Connected menu to copy files from/to the computer. The PC is able to recognize that a USB device is plugged in but detects it as a Unknown device.
When I manually attempt to install the drivers from device manager, it detects the device as for "Samsung Android USB Composite Device" but ends up saying that the device cannot be started (Code 10).
I have also tried plugging it into a different USB port just to check off a problem with the port.
Appreciate any pointers regarding this.
Thanks
Issue exists with WinXP
Update: I just tried the same on my WinXP (32bit) laptop and still the same issue. This is driving me nuts!
Check the port on your phone and make sure your cable is fully seated. I had an issue once with mine doing the same thing but it was just my cable getting caught on the little slide protector.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I did move it to a different port and also as I mentioned above tried it on a different PC. Both have the same problem.
Have you tried the galaxyS drivers?
Grr I cant put links in here for the wiki where its locked.
I installed the "usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64" drivers and plugged in the phone. It recognized the device correctly and I am able to see the phone in Explorer. I didnt have to enable USB debugging as well.
Thanks for help.
Glad it worked. Watch out for the keys program as well. It we over write the drivers with ones that dont work.

[Q]Does not show GT-N7000 when connected to pc

hi, when Rocket Rom 7 (ics) came out, i installed it. after doing this, when i connected my phone to the pc, the system detects the phone as Samsung_android and shows 2 removable drives in the system. however, if you click on them they dont work
it no longer detects my phone as GT-N7000
what i have noticed: when i connect the usb cable, the phone doesnt show "MTP connection" anymore... instead, it shows USB connected.
what has been done:
flashed rocket rom 10, nogo
reinstalled kies: nogo
reinstalled win7 (yes i actually did that even tho testing on other pcs showed the same issue)
the phone still charges and the only way i can connect my phone to d pc to view files is by clicking "usb storage"
any advice on this?
Uninstall kies, and just install driver (find latest from toolbox on my signature)
use different USB port, and dont use any extensor cable to connect device.

hi bro... didnt work... i dont think its the driver... its the phone... coz i tested another note, its working fine
My Galaxy Tab has similar issues. I believe it would be due to the architechture of the ROM forcing you to have to mount your device to your computer before being able to load the Device Internal SD, and the External SD.
Click USB Storage when it shows, this should pop up a window which has a Lil android dude, and USB Storage Message with a button stating 'Turn on USB Storage'. After clicking it, you can click 'Turn Off USB Storage' to unmount the device.
thanx for that.. hehe.. i stumbled across it the other day.. at least i can transfer files... but just dont like the fact its not showing...

Cyanogenmod 12.1, Oneplus One, monitor mode

Hello, guys! Advance sorry for my english. Need help. Recently, I tried build cm kernel for Oneplus One with ath9k drivers support to connect external wifi adapter via OTG (in my case it's TL-WN722N). But it turned out that this option is enabled. "lsusb" says that adapter connected. "dmesg" says that "new usb device" connected. "iwconfig" from installed kali (linux deploy) doesn't see any wlan interface (only built-in wlan0). I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I know Kali NetHunter, but I can't install it with nightlies (I don't want install cyanogen 12.1, because it's a "heavy"). Can anyone give me a hint?
Wrong place....
Please an admin delete my post and move thread to Oneplus One...

Can't Use USB File Transfer - Android Driver indicates failure

Hi - For a long time, my OP3T worked fine when I would connect the USB to do file transfers.
However, for a few weeks now, USB File Transfer stopped working. on my home PC. I know that there must be some issue with my PC because USB File Transfer works fine with my Win10 work PC.
PTP transfer seems to work OK on the Home PC. When I look at the Other Devices >> Android in Win10 Device Manager, there is a exclamation point indicating a driver failure. I have tried installing/reinstalling the official OnePlus USB drivers, but no luck.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
¿GJ?
Try this:

If that's no help try the Google USB Drivers:
