[Q] New update -> MKV support ?

Hello everyone,
I'm new here, I don't know nothing about what you are all talking about here ^^ BUT a friend told me that the new update allow the O2X to play MKV files > Is that true ? He told me trough an email.
I happy with the version I have right now and if it supports mkv with the new update, I will definitely install it.

I think we could always do it with certain programmes because the mobile can process it. But according to wikipedia, 4.0 reproduces mkv natively so yes, it should.

Hi friend,
Yes the latest V30a ICS update allows MKV format to play on native video player app.Also flv video format is also supported by the native video player.Checked on my O2x.Just that 1080pi full HD videos are not supported yet.So have fun watching vids or movies without the inconvenience of converting

Thanks I will definitely update ! Mkv + hdmi on the O2X make it a good device.

The O2X has been able to play MKV's since Gingerbread...but only to a low profile level. MKV's downloaded (tv shows etc) are all 720p HIGH Profile and the phone could not support that as the Tegra chip couldnt handle the HIGH profile.
Are you saying that our phones can now play 720p HIGH profile MKV's...because, if it can, I may actually update!

i try using mxplayer, with 720p High profile @L4.1 still the video lags and not smooth using s/w decoder. i think with handheld, it can't play mkv with high profile. only use low profile and it's playback smoothly

You can run 720p or 1080p fluid.. spawndk from the eepad transformer forum:
"The Tegra2 chipset are designed as a mobile sollution chipset - to support web 2 standards. The highest encoding profile used here (Youtube 1080p) are 1080p baseline and this the Tegra2 chipset will both record and play with no troubles. As well as 720p baseline and main profile - but only upto L3.1 with some limitations. It doesnt matter which container is used (mkv, mp4, m4v, avi etc) and it doesnt matter if resolution are 1080p - its only a matter of the encoding profile used to encode the supported video format H264
Tegra2 will NEVER be able to decode High profile L4.1 encodes - it's not a software issue, neither in terms of Honeycomb or Nvidia libs, its simply a limitation of the abilities of the hardwaredecoder in the Tegra2 chipset and this will never change. It is also not a limitation in the Transformer specifically, but a limitation in ALL Tegra2 based tablets and mobilephones.
This is the same reason why some mediaplayers like the Boxee Box that was originally intended to use the Tegra2 moved on to an Intel chipset before launch.
In short the Tegra2 chipset will support playback of videos encoded in 1080p or 720p resolution, using the H264 video codec and AAC audio codec - as long as the video are encoded after the baseline profile standard
It will not now or ever - play 1080p/720p encodes encoded after the high profile standard."
So basically, you have to reencode videos just like on ipad..

As you said that O2x was able to play MKV video format since GB but in a low profile level.But after the O2x was updated to latest V30a ICS upgrade the native video player app is supporting more formats and can play 720p high profile MKV video formats.I tried to play 720p BRRIP x264 dual audio.mkv movie and it played smoothly, without any audio delay as experienced in GB.Only problem that i faced with native video player was that i was unable to select the preferred audio language in dual audio mkv file as there is no option to select audio language.Other wise native video player is superb:good:.

L3.1 can be called High profile yet and O2x can handle it with 720p. sometimes i find some video that physicaly gets over phone posibilities. its played with HW decoder and its not very smooth.
if you want to made 1080p videos, use handbrake and set the settings with tegra decoding possibility manual. But i dont know if something changed with ICS, but i was not able mount SD card with other FS than fat32 and there is not posible to have file with more size than 4GB and its not enough for 1080p movie in low profile

You attached thumbnail indicates that what you were sucessfully watching was indeed an MKV file (a 720p rip) but it does not indicate the profile of the file.
Most downloaded high definition MKV video files, especially tv shows, are MKV files (at 720p) encoded to HIGH profile level 4.0 or above. In Gingerbread these files would not play unless they were converted to mp4 at a lower profile than HIGH (I used BASELINE). This is a limitation of the Tegra 2 chipset in the phone.
Your Cloverfield file is an MKV, but I strongly suspect that the profile of the file is lower than HIGH (the file size is too small for a high definition, HIGH profile encoded movie with that runtime)
Sadly, im still not convinced the phone will play an MKV high definition file encoded at HIGH Profile 4.0 or above. And I dont intend to risk upgrading to ICS (with all the problems that could bring) to find out.
However, I would love to be proved wrong....

[Q] What video formats/containers can be harware decoded by HTC One?

SGS IV looks like complete s*it. So now the only thing that stops me from buying HTC One this year is format support. Heard that it can't hardware decode mkv, is it true? I dodn't mean out of the box but any player like MX or BS. They both have hardware+ decoders that may somehow help with mkv.

MKV is not a video format but a container so I guess it depends on what type of format it was encoded.
Regarding full video formats supported HTC said it is
3gp, 3gpp, 3gp2, mp4, avi(dix, vidx), h264, webm & WMV

I know mkv is a container, but h.264 video decoding is implemented in many previous htc flagship chipsets (e.g. in HTS One X), though mkv can't be hardware decoded on these devices even with 3rd party players (judjing by responses on One X). The same in apple devices. There are no apps that could simply on the fly demux mkv and hardware decode h.264 video stream. Are there anybody who already owes the device and could run the test with any 1080p rip or beter BD remux in mkv?

sorry I would like to revise my previous statement it doesn't support xvid, divx And yeah doesn't also support MKV. But Xperia Z does.

My stock video player won't play .mkv files correctly (no sound), nor will DicePlayer which I'm very surprised about.
MX Player works perfectly - in the Settings I have the video set to H/W and the audio set to S/W - and now my 720p .mkv files run buttery smooth and are pin sharp.

Well yes, that I figured out as well, that MKV, and AVI (divx-xvid) is not supported, but only those which are encoded with AC3
Because of this, some youtube videos are not played, or sorry..played but without any sound....furthermore, when I try to stream anything via DLNA (samsung allshare runs on the pc and or Router) then I cannot watch them...its kinda annoying....
do you have any solution for this? like installing codecs?

Sure, I found out as well, but my main problem is:
When I am trying to play video on my HTC ONE using DLNA (which is hosted, operated on my PC) the videos which are using or coded with AC3
audio, they...just won't play....
As far as I know mxplayer does not have DLNA support....but correct me if I am wrong... and also what would you do with the youtube videos ?#
After contacting HTC, they just told me sorry these formats are not supported.... I hope it will be only a matter of an update...cause its kinda annoying that you can put any files on a galaxy s4 or galaxy s3...and just play it with the default app...

A little update on this... I manage to make an mkv movie play on the stock player. However the audio codec is not supported. So I think MKV is supported. DivX and Xvid are the only codecs that's not working.

well playing mkv, or avi is not an issue, but it plays without sound (due to the missing AC3) codec, mxplayer must be installed and its good to gooo with hw+ and its perfect, I even found a solution for the DLNA thingy.
Now I just need to get use to the camera, which is perfect on the display, but less perfect on the pc

MX Player Pro - optimal settings for no lag with 1080p videos

Just updated my MX Player Pro (to the current latest version 1.7.19) which is arguably the finest Android media player - it plays everything you throw at it. I figured since the HTC One has the best full HD smartphone display with the industry highest PPI in the world right now, i should at least enjoy the maximum it offers. So, i played a full 1080p MKV video but it was lagging a little on my HTC One M7. I disabled power saving mode to unleash the full power of the Snapdragon 600 SoC, but the slight lag persists. By the way, i'm on stock Sense 5.0 with Android 4.2.2, never rooted and my AnTuTu score is 26511 so i doubt if my M7 is being slowed-down because of bloatware, defects, etc. I also closed all other running games and apps, but still the issue remains.
The specifications of the 1080p MKV video that i've tested:
File Size: 9.83 GB
Video: MPEG4 Video (H264) 1920x800 23.976fps
Audio: Dolby AC3 48000Hz 6ch 640kbps
Subtitle: VobSub [Subtitle]
My current settings on MX Player Pro: i'm using S/W decoding for both video and audio. I disabled H/W+ for video, audio, drawing subtitles and aspect ratio correction. Basically, i turned off H/W+ everywhere in the settings. But then, i also tried enabling H/W+ for video only, and then for both video and audio. But still, the slight lagging didn't go away. I also downloaded a custom codec ARMv7 Neon from XDA forums directly from the Settings of MX Player Pro itself. Still, no luck.
So, i want to know what are the best MX Player Pro settings that you personally use to achieve a smooth viewing experience (without lag) when playing the most demanding videos, like 1080p? FYI, i have zero issues with 720p videos.

Try playing MP4 1080p files..they just play fine
and may be its because for both video and audio (5.1) you need S/W decoding and this may be the reason for your lag too
Even with S/W decoding too it should work but causes a lot of battery drain

I reset the settings and using S/W decoding everywhere. I restarted my phone and now it's working fine. I guess a good ole reboot did the trick.
I'm also using RGB 16-bit. I tried RGB 32-bit mode and haven't noticed any slowdowns or noticeable differences.
The original video file was actually in MP4 format but i wanted to mux the subtitle into it to end up with only one MKV file (instead of an MP4 file and its corresponding .sub subtitle file), so i used MKVtoolnix to merge the .sub file into it. Maybe it's the .sub file giving MX Player some extra work. Usually, .srt subtitle files are much lighter in terms of file size and for decoding as well.

the solution to your problem is simple,... you should try to play with s/w decoder in your mxplayer and it will go fine, it also offers much more loudness adjustments compare to h/w decoder,. you will see the option in front of you! xD

Personally i use hw+ decoder for every supported format. It plays 1080p videos very smooth here. For all the other formats you should try sw with yuv instead of 16bit or 32bit rgb.

 @topic i recommand use h/w instead and test with other video files also.

hw vs sw decoder?
I thought hardware is the only way to go and software is for last resort. My AC3s are playing back in stereo and now I'm trying to figure out why...

Huawei P10 4k / HEVC / h.265 playback problems on Laptop / Desktop PC

Hey folks,
I am using a P10 (VTR-L09) with EMUI-Version 8.0.0 and Android Version 8.0.0. Due to the camera problems of the android 9 update (see other posts here) I am still using Android 8.0.0. In Android 9 Huawei is switching to h.264 for 4k Videos but the files are much bigger and due to the not working OIS the results are terrible.
I am using video in UHD 4k 16:9 stereo and the quality is great. Huawei is using h.265 codec and the file size is quite ok. On the phone the video playback is good working.
But I am facing the problem, that I am not able to play the videos on other devices than the P10. On my i7 with Windows 10 and VLC player, VLC is stopping after a few frames. It looks like the video is corrupted. Converting the files via VLC results in a video with the audio stream and a black screen. On others players the videos stops every second. Other 4k videos are played without any problems on this machine. A lot of editing programs are not able to load the videos (I've tried to convert them to an other format). So it seems to me that Huawei is using a special version of h.265 codec or the are having an error in creating the video files.
Does any body know what "special" version of h.265 /HEVC codec Huawei is using or what the reason could be?
I know that h.265 need hardware support but the i7 should be powerful enough to handle that.

HDR10 video files playback

Is there any way to play HDR10 video files with proper HDR colors? HDR works fine in YouTube, but neither the stock player nor VLC or Kodi manage to play the video file properly; washed-out greyish colors are the result. The file is a standard 4k HEVC HDR10 24fps video, and plays fine besides missing HDR. Since the phone itself supports HDR10, I really wonder why it won't work. Is it a software-side artificial limitation to Netflix and YouTube (where HDR works just fine), or is there any technical reason behind this? And would there be any custom ROMs with proper HDR playback support?

Try mxplayer, has better support for hdr metadata than stock &Vlc

Any solution to this....?

i dont have proper information regarding the question asked.. but i felt to share my experience too..
i have VLC , MX player, KM player .. i tried playing Batman begins(2k) movie..
then VLC changed colours drastically by boosting saturation and gamma levels..
KMplayer played it in good colours, i found that something relating to SW/HW enforcing or acceleration has to do with it..
then finally i tried to disable all enhancements in VLC and tried.. then video became choppy..
it couldn't play the video at all.. same as my Laptop ( i3,8th gen - default HDgraphics) plays 4k video in choppy manner
then i thought: they are not only playing video, but converting the video while playing it.. because i can observe loss in detailing of picture ( my laptop with 1080p screen has more detailing than, phone 1080p screen)
