Wifi calling on 9.0 Pie - Moto G6 Questions & Answers

I specifically bought a Moto G6 about a year ago in order to use wifi calling on T-Mobile's network. I have terrible cellular network reception in my home, and I constantly drop/miss calls if I'm not using wifi.
I've read several concerning posts about Pie changing its wifi calling behavior to aggressively switch back to the cellular network whenever possible. Examples (sorry, can't post links, but you can search for these):
T-Mobile Support: Is anyone having WiFi calling issues since Pie update
Reddit: wi-fi calling preferences have been updated to optimize network experience
Lots of people complain about constant notifications about the phone switching to and from the cellular network, but there seems to be ways to squelch the notification.
I'm more concerned about the possibility that it's no longer possible to configure the phone to "wifi preferred" mode after the Pie update. If my phone is constantly trying to switch back to the cellular network in my home, I'm going to go back to having frequent missed and dropped calls—which is a deal killer for me.
I'm hoping the community here can confirm or assuage my concerns about updating to Pie.

[Q] Advanced wifi calling T-Mobile M9

I have been told that the M9 does not support advanced wifi calling. I'm not sure about my terminology, but what I mean is that it cannot hand a wifi call off to the LTE/HSPA network.
However I have just finished demonstrating that it does hand off without dropping the call, and to the HSPA network. I had noticed this behavior the other day, but in a discussion in an article on fiercewireless, i was told this is technically impossible.
My M9 is set to wifi calling, wifi preferred, and when I make the call in the driveway, the dialer says "wifi call", the call connects and the phone icon in the statusbar is green, and the phone beeps at me with a message that I'm near the edge of the wifi calling area and the call may drop. I drive away, the call never drops, the beeping/message stop, and the green phone icon in the statusbar becomes white. And I'm connected to "4G", not 4G LTE.
Who told you it didn't support it?
I myself, don't like the feature. Especially when I have little to no service, it'll constantly be searching for service(draining my battery) when I'm connected with WiFi calling.
Hoping it'll be able to be disabled in custom ROMs.
I think the screen name was Fabian and it was in the discussion about Sprint offering the international data like T-Mobile. He seems to be knowledgeable and was adamant that this is not possible. I think he said it's only possible on the iPhone 6. Aside from that, I myself thought it was impossible for a WiFi to hspa handoff, yet this is what I'm seeing.
Hopefully they make it official since it does work
I'm pretty sure I read that this was a new feature. . . I'll look for the source I read this from.
Sent From My HTC One (M8)
It's a new feature with the S810.
Wish it'd give you the option...
just wondering
Have u guys seen the aggressive Wi-Fi to cellular handover setting in developer settings?
not sure what to think I never use Wi-Fi call just thought I'd share. Because it might help those that have calls dropped. Worth a shot to check the box and try.
T-Mobile (re)enabled wifi/cell handoff with Uncarrier 8 several months ago. A decent LTE connection is required for the handoff but nearly every LTE handset can do so (coming to the Nexus 6 Real Soon Now.)
The Sprint person is incorrect, but a their wifi calling implementation is, quite frankly, bizarre, so I'm not surprised at their being clueless over T-Mobile's.
Nothing unique about the HTC One m9's wifi calling except it being on a really great handset.

Radio and Wifi/VoLTE calling issues on CM13

I hope I'm not alone in this. My issues with the LG G4, T-mobile and CM13 (Usually latest nightly) are as follows.
Also stating here that I've never seen VoLTE and wifi calling working on CM13 on this device despite it being announced as working in the middle of 2015
I have seen Wi-Fi Calling settings in the past but it has since been removed.
-On reboot/booting I am required to toggle on and off Airplane mode to get service and data.
-VoLTE does not work. Radio drops to EDGE/GPRS(read: GSM) to make calls despite being in an area that has this feature. We tested my SIM in another device and VoLTE worked. Wi-Fi calling is not a priority to me but is related to VoLTE so it's probably important.
-WiFi Calling is completely missing in any/all settings/menus. So cannot be enabled.
-Tethering usage is still tracked. While it doesn't show up in billing or to the Rep, throttle begins at 5GB. (Simple Choice Unlimited promo 2015)
*Returning to 20i stock to do some testing.
Halp!

Hi, friend
When I search in settings for Wi-Fi calling it appears. And there is a on/off switch . but No settings for preferation. I couldn't try it or see it in action I live in a good coverage area.
VoLTE no clue.
I am concerned as you are, If I don't find these in the next couple days. I will go stock. I'm gonna need them soon.
Also is your G4 unlocked (carrier)? It will work with any GSM, After CM13. I couldn't my self check that. I don't have any SIM card but T-Mobile.
Please update me of the Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE status,
Please.
I'm thinking about making a post for LG G4 on CM that contains all Q&A, Hints and tips and What to expect to be working. I'll give you credit for any help.

get rid of constant notifications that wifi calling is available?

I have an unlocked Huawei P20 Pro, dual sim (CLT-L29) in the UK. Wi-fi calling works with Vodafone, EE and Three, but Vodafone is the only network which causes constant notifications to pop-up on my phone, to let me know that wi-fi calling is available. I could maybe understand that a notification appears the first time I connect to a wi-fi network (even though no such notification appears with the other 2 mobile operators), but why I sometimes get 3 notifications in 5 minutes, when I am 2 metres from the wi-fi router and with a perfect wi-fi signal, is beyond me.
Does this happen to other people? Is it a Vodafone thing? Is it the combination of Vodafone + P20 Pro? Is there a way to stop it?
I limited it this way:
setting -> apps -> more -> show system processes -> phone -> notifications -> wi-fi calling and disable all the options (display in status bar, etc.)
but some notifications still filter through.
Yes - I get exactly this behaviour on Vodafone.
I tried to disable using the steps you've described but I keep getting the notifications and I will often get a vibrate as a result after I have unlocked my phone.
Very frustrating and I don't seem to be able to disable it.
Use nCleaner app from play store,
and under "Ongoing notification" section, just disable any notifications you want to hide
nCleaner
@otonieru: thanks for the advice. nCleaner definitely did the trick. I got rid of the frustrating WiFi calling notification. Nothing else has worked but this. Thank you!
My guess would be that the notification occurs when the Vodafone cellular signal is weak or drops out so you are advised that Wi-Fi Calling is available as a fallback. It probably doesn't happen with the other networks because their signal is stronger and more reliable.
Having said that, I recall having a similar issue with Vodafone some years ago, possibly with roaming notifications, where I was incessantly bombarded with the same message. It may just be a Vodafone poor practices issue.
It is middle of 2023 and annoying Vodafone WiFi Calling notifications continue to persist.
I have Xiaomi Poco F3 with stock Android 13 ROM. I have two SIM cards, one UK Vodafone and second one is 1p Mobile (EE network carrier). WiFi calling is enabled on both SIMs because I have poor cellular reception in my area but perfect WiFi in my house. But only Vodafone that is a real pest with their never-ending notifications.
@otonieru: thank you for the advice. Notification Cleaner (nCleaner) has worked for me too. I got rid of the frustrating Vodafone WiFi calling notification. Thank you.

VOLTE T-Mobile, not working (WORKING as of last update)

I'm experiencing issues with VOLTE on T-Mobile. My phone switches immediately from an LTE+ DATA connection to HSPA the moment a call is placed. Of course, VOLTE is enabled on the settings side. I'm running an unmodified system, upgraded to PIE.
I've been on the phone with T-Mo to make sure the APN is correct (nothing special to mention here). I've also tried different connection combinations using the *#*#4636#*#* with different results but, even though the phone connects really fast to DATA (LTE+), I cannot get VOLTE to function in any case. On the other hand, WiFi calling works just fine.
On a chat with Razer, they just told me that VOLTE is unstable with T-Mobile and, to disable the function altogether from settings.
Before I give up, I'm asking the geniuses here for ideas or experiences? Any ideas anyone?

I hope this can be figured out. Im waiting for my Razer 2 phone delivery and also on T-Mobile. What OS are you running? Android Pie?
Yes, I'm on Pie.
Good news! with today's update (3-20-2019), my phone is using VOLTE technologies to connect audio calls. Phone calls sound immensely better now (the "HD" icon shows up during the call and the "LTE+" connection indicator in the status bar remains through the call).

wifi calling works without carrier firmware

I bought a SM-N960U1 unbranded US unlocked model, and I immediately updated it to Android 9. THEN I inserted my T-Mobile sim, and I have wifi calling. I did all of this a few weeks ago, and I never really questioned it all until today.
I'm posting this now because I read that people cannot get wifi calling to work on their unbranded model unless they flash carrier firmware.
And this is what I've found. When I make a call while connected to wifi, I see the little wifi symbol on my phone symbol, as if the call is a wifi call. I have a toggle for wifi calling, which works! If I toggle wifi calling off and make the call again, no wifi symbol on the phone symbol. When I look in settings > connections, I do NOT have items to set wifi calling and VoLTE. However, I can search settings for wifi calling and I will find the Samsung 'Wi-Fi Calling' app (com.sec.unifiedwfc 6.0.33.47) RUNNING!
So, it seems I have wifi calling working on T-Mobile, with just the Samsung stock firmware and not the carrier firmware. Which is great! No carrier bloat.
I just tested my wifi calling by starting a wifi call and then walking out of wifi range, and it definitely works! At the edge of wifi range, the call broke up, handed over to the cell tower, and became noticeably less clear. I'm stoked to have wifi calling without carrier bloat.
I might investigate further if there are some settings I can toggle over adb (wifi preferred, etc)
It depends on the carrier. T-Mobile does support all of its services, including WiFi calling, on the N960U1. Some other carriers do not. Always check with your carrier before buying an unbranded phone.
I also just discovered that toggle button text is CLICKABLE, and I can access Wi-Fi Calling SETTINGS when I tap on the wifi calling toggle's text, which gives me the option to turn on/off wifi calling, wifi/cell preferred.
So I have Wi-Fi Callng, can change settings, all in the stock non-branded firmware of the SM-N960U1.
AWESOME!
