Couple things I noticed was missing compared to other previously owned Android phones was the lack of pre-installed Note / Notepad. I had to install a 3rd party from Google Play Store.
This morning, I also could not find the default audio music player?! Need to install a 3rd party one too???
Getting "operation handler failed java.lang.illegalstateexception" when playing downloaded audio files... works on computer and other phones...
No Weather widget for homepage???
Also another question was how do I get all downloads such as files, pictures, videos to save on micro SD instead of in the phone. App files can save onto phone, don't need those on micro SD.

I have had my windows phone for a couple of weeks, the HTC Surround. I went to the AT&T store and was looking at the Captivate. Did some quick browsing and to my surprise everything worked. I loved the icon format, the animated background, the ease of navigation, the multitasking, the sound was ok, it looked like flash was supported. I did not get to view any movies but the screen looked good. So I am thinking about exchanging my Surround. But I need a few questions answered.
1. Are there many available (free) apps
2. Does the software convert movies, and is the movie player included
3. Is there a FM radio built in
4. what is the available storage
thanks for any help

The phone running 2.1 does not support flash 10.1 but there are froyo roms in the development section that do.
The android market has many free apps.
The stock video player supports many formats but if you need to convert I'd suggest handbrake.
Currently there is no FM radio support and I'm not sure if there ever will be.
16GB internal and an external micro sd card slot.
Sent from my Captivate
3rd party apps?
Is the phone open for 3rd party apps or just the apps thru AT&T?
Is there an IRC chat client or a police scanner?
What about video news and AM/FM talk radio apps?
Any GPS apps?
thanks
You can sidelad apps if you read a "how to" here in XDA there are also more than 100,000 apps in the android market and I would say that at least 40,000 are free, switch to android, wp7 will die soon, plus the captivate will have true expandable storage. Seeing as how you can't even get official WP7 SD cards and u can use any SD with android.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
got it
AT&T exchanged my Surround for the Captivate (Galaxy S) today. So far very happy. Better everything except the Surround had more sound, but its an OK tradeoff. I liked this phone the moment I saw it. Plenty of free apps, there's even an IRC client. Thanks for the advice. I'll be hanging around here learning the phone

rooting phone
OK I got handbrake...not sure what is the right extension and resolution is best or what it will allow.
Does rooting your phone reset the phone back to default or do your settings and programs remain intact?
I enabled USB debugging mode, and now when i go back to the USB menu I now see 4 options (kies, media player, mass storage, and ask on connection)...is that right?
When i connect and choose media player the phone appears on my PC...if i choose mass storage, a new drive letter appears but i cannot access the phone...maybe it is becasue I dont have an SD card installed?
After rooting, should i delete the update.zip file on my phone?
thanks
Rooting gives you access to system files and folders. Nothing is lost unless you do a factory reset or master clear.
I'm the owner of a Windows Phone 8 for a couple of months now, the Samsung Ativ S (GT-I8750). I have the latest GDR3 update (8.0.10517.150) but there are still quite a few problems I'd like to get fixed. And I'd appreciate it if anyone could direct me to hacks (if available) that would fix some of these. I'd also like to know if there is anything to benefit from "rooting" (interop unlock?) the device, and if it's possible to install standalone apps from the microSD card.
1. The volume level on the phone is a very low in general, and I most often have to manually boost the audio on some tracks (especially audiobooks) before putting them on my phone. Any way to get the volume higher?
2. The search button automatically opens Bing, any way to change that?
3. The video/audio format support is horrible, and I can't seem to play most files. Possible to install support? Codecs?
4. Installing apps/games on the microSD card, possible?

There are benefits for the interop-unlock of the Ativ S : Full File Access (see all the files of your phone through your PC, not just the public folders Music, Photos and Video, you'll be able to backup your apps and data : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2462730), tweaks like custom accent colors (text of the color pink remains however but the color itself is changed), both these functions can be activated in the SamWP8 tool. Infinite number of sideloaded apps and a basic File Manager : Windows Folder Browser by ngame or WP8 File Explorer Project by hjc4869 or PDF to Office V3.1.3 for interop-unlocked Samsung devices by contable.
1. Yes, in the first versions of WPH Tweaker, you could set your volume control to 0-10, 0-30 or 0-50, the text in volume control pop-up (current volume/30) still remains the same but the steps do change, I think.
2. Not if you don't have your region set to any other country than Russia, in WPH Tweaker there is an option to add google search to IE, but in regions where Bing is incorporated this doesn't work (the only region that doesn't have Bing incorporated is Russia).
3. There are some players out there on Windows Phone Store which can play most video and audio formats, but they are all paid apps (if you wanted to have free codecs or free video players, you should have bought an android phone, because Microsoft is making it very difficult for open source view players (like VLC or XBMC, both available for android free of charge) to enter the market place of Windows 8/Windows Phone : for VLC they had to rewrite the entire app and it still isn't released yet). Some examples are : Moliplayer Pro (trail available, China has a free non-trail version Moliplayer but you can't install this without having a weibo account), Best Player and YxPlayer WP8.
4. No, you can place xaps on the root of your microSD card and let it install through the store on the phone itself, but you can't install any applications on the microSD Card partition (strangely you can place the maps of the default maps application on your SD card with WPH Tweaker).
Hi All
Firstly, a huge thankyou to @leapinlar for the "Dummies Guide for Installing CM 10.1/10.2" thread. It literally resurrected my sluggish, unusable NookHD sitting in the bottom of my drawer, to something i'm enjoying using via using CMD 10.1.3 Hummingbird!
I do have a few issues tho which I've searched high & low for but cannot seem to find answers, so figured I'd throw it out here:
(1) "can't play video": this is a message I keep getting when attempting to play any videos. they worked on the nook prior to the CM install, i'm using MX player as read that's the best for all codecs. the videos are all residing in the device's memory not the external microSD. should all media be stored (& played from) a microSD card, as opposed to the device memory?
(2) music scrubs speedily thru tracks: so basically can't listen to any mp3s on device. songs just skip thru themselves (like super fast scrubbing similar to sound of changing radio stations) then skips to next track. these mp3s also all reside on device's memory not the external microSD. again, should i play all media from the microSD?
(3) no notifications: i don't seem to be getting any notifications. gmail, facebook, twitter, instagram etc... nothing. when new emails come in, no sound, nor unread number updated on app icon (yup, gmail's configured correctly via managed labels etc). facebook & twitters app icons also don't update with a number representing a new notifications
(4) microSD not recognized: im testing with a small 2GB SanDisk microSD and although it is mounted, I don't see any option to "format SD". I also tried to export a photo & a zip from my Dropbox to the SD and although it appears to save it there, it doesn't -- saves it to internal. Am I missing something?
sorry if these are rookie questions, I will admit I am a rookie! any help or pointers appreciated.
cheers

ok, so made progress after
audio & video both play well when:
(a) reside on the microSD card, not internal memory.
&
(b) are transferred on there externally via a card reader prior to inserting card into nook.
(transferring the *same* music/videos to the microSD whilst it resides in the nook (and connecting nook via USB) resulted it some files playing whilst others didn't... very temperamental)
as for notifications, they seem to have fixed itself.
Need some advice for dummies.
I currently have a gnex that is in great condition but the Verizon trade in and black Friday deals were too good to pass up. This was my first smartphone.
What is the simplest way to transfer my data from one phone to another?
1. Contacts and calendar should go automatically since they are through Google.
2. Photos - is there an easy way to transfer these? I will back up all of them to a nas, and I only want to transfer some so is the best bet to just directly copy the ones I want to a directory on the new phone?
3. Music - all my stuff is on Google music so no worries there. Side note, anyone know a volume leveler for Google music? It drives me insane since they bounce around so much even in the same volume. And I've leveled all my music already! Don't have any issues playing through xbmc, my laptop, or even other apps on my phone.
4. Audio books. Don't have a lot but are big files? I guess my best bet is to transfer them onto a laptop then onto the new phone? Anything more direct?
5. Do I need any kind of file manager on the new phone? I downloaded ASTRO file manager when I first got this phone to see where stuff was actually downloaded too from the chrome browser but is that necessary on the 4.4 Android? I have 4.2.2 right now.
6. Passwords for Google Chrome websites and tapatalk forums... Those should also transfer automatically correct? Since the app is actually storing them remotely?
Forgive the cross-post, but I'm trying (and failing) to transfer mp3 files from my PC to my new Galaxy Watch 3. I know I can use the Wearable app, but I don't want to duplicate the files on my phone and then upload them to my watch. Also not wanting to do it through bluetooth, which will take forever.
I want, but can't find the simple "Music Manager" wifi function as seen in the vid below and the Samsung support articles:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3v54WyNbQg
https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00078019/
https://www.samsung.com/hk_en/suppo...er-music-files-from-iphone-to-gear-s2-s3-fit/
I've tried the Teleporter app, and it's never worked for me. I even tried out this crazy solution using the Tizen Studio:
https://www.reddit.com/r/gearfit/comments/5pww1w/music_transfer_with_no_samsung_device/
from which I managed to upload an mp3 file into my watch after launching the device manager, but my watch's music program couldn't recognize the basic mp3 file (though I saw it in there using a file explorer).
How can they make it this impossible? Why can't we just upload files straight from our PC?
What am I missing?
As there is no way of physically connecting the watch to the PC (unlike the original Gear watches of years ago), you are stuck with the only real way, as painfully slow as it might be, using the wearable app. I don't think Samsung envisaged people loading 1000's of music files to a watch, maybe things will change now they are adding more storage.
Maybe you should contact Samsung support directly.
As you are using an iPhone your choices are also more limited. unless you finally work out that "Music Manager" solution you mentioned, but that only seemed to be compatible with the S2/S3/Fit models. Maybe Apple have blocked it in some way as sadly they have form for things like that.
I guess you will just have to bite the bullet - maybe do it in batches!
