Questions about the official Q Beta Program - Xiaomi Mi 9 Questions & Answers

Hello everyone! So recently I got a Mi 9 and I have some questions about the Beta Q update, so here I go.
-If I update it via the official website (no flashing or anything like that), will I be able to come back to 9.0 Pie or do I have to wait until the official update?
-Do I even get the official update, and if yes, will it still be stock Android or MIUI?
-Is it worth getting the Beta, or are there still many remaining bugs?
-Can I unlock my phone from the beta and install TWRP?
Thanks for your help in advance!

HI, to install the android q official beta, you must have the chinese version of the mi9 if your phone's bootloader is locked. I
f you install it, it's not recommended to come back to android pie.
If you are in the official xiaomi beta program, you will receive the official miui ota updates. The beta versions are stable, but there are some issues. For example some apps may not work as expected, like magisk that give root access hardly.
You can unlock your phone from the beta and install twrp.
I hope that this will help you.

Any updates coming?

I'm really liking the Mi Mix but concerned about security with the device. Is the OEM planning on updating the latest security patch or move to Nougat? I'm on a April security patch and using the latest Global Rom. Thanks!

If you want nougat you can try the global beta
(Im using epic rom based on miui beta 7.6.8 nougat with may security patch)
Do I need an unlocked bootloader to apply the beta? Oh, and is it pretty stable?

You dont need an unlocked bootloader, there is a flash guide in the beta download section.
I prefer the global stable, in my experience it was faster and more persistent than the beta, And if you will regret flashing the beta you will have a hard time going back to stable (unlocking bootloader and flashing twrp and downloading all your apps again...).
But if you want to flash the beta you should unlock your bootloader and flash twrp so when you do flash the beta you will have a backup (backup in twrp before flashing the beta) of your latest stable miui.
Its your choice

Okay, so I really don't want to mess with all of that if the stable version is better. I'm just hoping we get a OTA update soon. I used to have the Honor Note 8 and they had the Nougat update back in March and some updates since then. Hope the Mi Mix keeps getting supported.

Hmm. I was under impression that to flash ANY other ROM rather than factory one, you need to unlock bootloader. To go from original factory Chinese rom to stable Global ROM - do you need to unlock bootloader or no?

Just checking if there are any updates with the Global Rom, such as Nougat or even a security update? I'm currently back to my S8+ until I hear about an update to the Global Rom. I'm curious to see the level of support when you go with this company.
Android 7.0 is in beta testing, so should be coming out soon as a stable/global rom.
I can't handle my S8+ and want to start using my Mi Mix again. Should I be concerned that it's still on Marshmallow with the Android security patch from April?

Possible to Flash back to oreo?

Hi,
just a short Question: is it possible to get back on oreo with the Nokia Image (from the dev beta Programm) when sideload the official pie zip?
Or has the pie beta no newer bootloader as the official pie?
I would be interested if it works.
Maybe it could work with this device without root?

Upgrade to Pie Global Beta from Global stable (locked bl)

Is it possible? I could on Mix 2s easily via recovery.
It is possible. You have to download the latest Oreo based beta version, which is MIUI 8.9.7, and install this package via the software update section in the settings. Once you are on the Oreo beta, you'll get the newest beta via the software updater.

I can confirm that it works. Started from Global stable 10.0.3.0, flashed the global beta 8.9.7 and then updated to beta 8.10.25 and the last step was to beta 10.11.2

I think you can't because the beta versions are based on Pie and the stable on Orea, so i suppose the ARB can give you some problems

the beta version stable doesn't exist. Beta or stable. I prefer beta because i have weekly updates, more functions, and more bugs solved
And how is the battery? Better or worse?
Now that the last stable version is based on Pie, do you think it's possible to go back from Dev Rom to stable?

Oh i didn't notice that the global stable is on Pie too now. The ARB function allows to flash same versions of Android, so i think you can

Hi @ricpicpr, what is best way to run Global beta, with twrp and root? In my theory is the always before install new beta, flash back stock boot.img, than install update and than again flash twrp and root. Is it correct?

Well im trying to understand this, because since my Mi8 is unlocked and rooted for the first time i have to update it with the weekly update. I received OTA notification and i have downloaded the OTA update (8.12.7) but when i confirm to Updater to apply the weekly update my phone restarted in twrp and the update failed. So yes maybe the way is to restore the original recoevery, flash the last weekly version and then flash twrp and root (with magisk in my case): I don't like very this, a bit too complicated but for now i can't imagine better and shorter ways

What do you think about recoveries which are posted on miui forums. I don't remember names and don't have read entire threads but from my understanding this recoveries are able install "update".zips. This friday come my Mi8, I know about +1 month for unlock bootloader, but I want to be informed and be ready

If you have TWRP, you can just install the FULL ROM ZIP of betas or stable and flash with TWRP without issues. Just download them from the official XIAOMI website. You cannot install the incremental updates that come from the internal ROM updater software. It only downloads the difference in the ROM versions, and it will fail because files that need patched have changed and fail the validation process. You might have to re-root and install the recovery after you flash.

I'm worried about coming back from beta to stable. As I read on web with ARB u can't make downgrade (from newest version to older). So in my theory is possible to came back from beta to stable just in one case and that is little bit...
Example:
Last beta version was released on sunday 15.5.2018
Last stable version WILL/WAS be relesed thursday 19.5.2018
So u have 2 days for make jump from beta to stable because on next sunday 22.5.2018 will be released another beta which will be again newest than last stable version or dont make any update of beta after release stable version.
Ofcourse I can be wrong

Uhm...i think the ARB check the Android version only. So if you are on Pie you can't go back to Oreo. Only this

We need to check the ARB index of the our installed Rom and the ARB index of the Rom we want to install

Will I be getting the regular OTA updates?

I recently installed MIUI 12.0.2.0 my redmi k20 pro from http://bigota.d.miui.com/V12.0.2.0.QFKINXM/miui_RAPHAELININGlobal_V12.0.2.0.QFKINXM_f009b4b446_10.0.zip . Since this isn't the official way to update the miui version I doubt whether I'd be getting the offical OTA updates that Xiaomi will push in the future or I have to regularly download the latest version from https://www.xda-developers.com/download-miui-12-stable-update-rolling-out-several-xiaomi-redmi-mi-poco-devices/ thread. I am using a xiaomi device for the first time so I dont have any idea about this.
Did you install the .zip through the Updater app? The update has been rolled out, hence why you were able to download the .zip and if you updated through the Updater app you will get future OTA updates.

Many XDA threads and other reputable resources link to the official MIUI downloads.
The link above is the official link for the 12.0.2 India recovery ROM. It might not be the "normal" way to update, it is still an official way to update. You will still get the normal OTA updates.
If you have flashed this with custom recovery, ota may not work. Otherwise, it should get ota and update normally.

Hello, sorry for this noob question. For sideloading (TWRP), what's the installation instruction?
I think this version is only for BETA TESTERS because I download and try to flash and I can't, always got different errors, so if you are registered in Mi Pilot sure you can flash, I have locked bootloader ...
