Q: How to change CSC with root but without losing data? - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

I have purchased a Korean N960N Note 9.
As I was in China when I got it, I went to a Chinese forum and got a Chinese localized ROM. There isn't really much heavy changes to the OS and since it provide useful functions when I'm in China I kept using it and now have quite some data on it. I also use Magisk root.
However as I'll go to the U.S. for school soon, I want to switch to an US CSC. I know I can easily do that by flashing something like Light ROM but I would have to format the entire device correct?
I have heard, and used to be able to with an app that I forgot, that there's some way of switching CSC without flashing an entire new ROM with the help of root? Is I have to flash a new ROM, do I absolutely have to wipe?
I've attached screenshots of my current software versions and CSC. My current ROM should be based on CSF9 and I after experiencing severe battery drains I flashed CSG1 baseband and solved the problem.

I may be wrong but I believe there's no way to switch CSC without losing data.

Mi Note LTE virus

Hi guys,
I bought a Mi Note yesterday from Singapore (I life in The Netherlands). The phone is doing fine, but I have one problem.
It came with malicious bloatware. This com.twiter.apk and other files keep installing malware on my phone.. and I can not stop it.
Please tell me with to do? The firmware is MIUI 6.
Download the firmware and reflash full firmware wiping caches etc...
How do I do that?
If im correct, i need to download the firmware and flash it via the updater app. How do I get the original firmware? (Which includes my language) And how do I know it helps? I already wiped all data twice. The virus is in the system one back up at this moment.
P.s. will i still have google play?
I recommend grabbing a copy from http://xiaomi.eu/, it's a modified version of the Chinese ROM from MIUI, but removed of China-specific features/apps/bloatware, and comes with Google Services pre-installed (PlayStore and a few other google framework). As far as I can tell, the ROM is "clean" (no malware), and it's updated frequently (the same frequency as MIUI's weekly updates).
If I'm not mistaken, Xiaomi.eu ROM also comes with more European languages, instead of just Chinese & English.
That's the ROM I've been running on my Mi Note Pro, and I've been very happy with it (happier than the official Chinese ROMs).
thank you, but I can only find sdma roms on the site, and I need LTE because my sim card uses 4G.
Thank you guys. It worked!

Ditching original touchwiz firmware (DBT handset) with stock as-google-intended firm?

I remember a while back I tried to put on the firmware someone recommended as being as "original" and clean as possible but it would never work and I was forced to flash DBT firmware back on my phone. Since then I had ditched the whole idea.
But, since 6.0.1 is working so much nicer on my S5 mini compared to 5.1.1, I would like to know what are the steps, if there are any, that I can do in order to get a purely untouched virgin Android OS installed properly on my S5 mini DBT? Is this possible? If it is, which code (like mine is DBT) firmware would I need to download and what steps are needed to make it actually boot up and function properly?
Thanks.
I do not understand very well, when you say dbt, you mean to debloated?
DBT = german firmware

How to enable/disable CSC features without root ?

Hi everyone !
I follow this forum for many years, being quiet but reading and learning from everyone. With my two previous Samsung phones, I installed custom ROMs, so rooted ROMs, on which I was able to use some apps allowing me to enable or disable CSC features.
My Note 9 is the first phone I don't wanna root because with OneUI, I can do most of the things I did with root on other phones (especially enabling dark mode, editing themes etc...). But I would like to enable some CSC features such as native SIP call support.
I have to say that my phone is the SM-N960F and I'm using CSC XEF as I'm in France.
I had an idea 2 months ago where I could extract the CSC archive from stock rom, edit the features file in XEF folder, repack the archive and push it to the phone for update, but :
1 - is it possible to repack in the right format?
2 - is it safe for the phone (no bootloop, no brick, no factory reset) ?
3 - will I keep OTA without it to wipe my changes or will I have to do this edit each time there is an update ?
Thanks for your reading and I hope some of you will be able to answer me
Hi everyone, still no idea ?
I have changed CSC from SEE to THL because I wanted to enable call recording function.
Did it with SamKey software, not free but not expensive too, couple of bucks.
Good thig is this will wipe nothing from the phone and OTA will work normal after.
I done that 2 months ago and everything is ok, had 2 OTA-s.
www.samkey.org
You have instructions here:
Enabling Native Call Recorder through CSC | XDA Developers Forums (xda-developers.com)
I already thought about it but there's no CSC with all the features I would like to have, choosing another one than OXM (the one I am running on) would force me to make a choice between having one specific new feature and lose another one

Hi, still no solution by now, and now the Note 9 is not my phone anymore I switched to the S22 Ultra
hello, I have had the same idea for some years, I have tried the rooms from the samsumg s6 edge and from note 9, but I decided to leave the root and custom roms because I lose other functions linked to knox.
I understand that the lines of code that activate the csc features exist because the functions are hidden in the samsung stock rom, however, the closest I have come to activating these functions is by changing the csc of my phone with room OXM but I have only managed to activate call recording and HIYA. I have the suspicion that samsung natively activates these functions in South Korea or in China (CHC) (not TGY) and perhaps acquiring a phone from these regions may have the cscs features

Question Doubts about installing custom rom

So right now I have the Redmi Note 10 Pro bought from my country's carrier, the thing is I don't really like being behind updates (carriers fault) and MIUI is not really for me so I was thinking about installing a custom rom (ArrowOS to be more specific). But I still have some doubts about the whole process.
1. What happens after the custom rom stops being maintained? Do I still get security updates? If that's no the case, is it still safe to use that custom ROM or will I be forced to go back to stock for more security?
2. Let's say that for some reason I have to lock the bootloader once again, how do I go back to stock if I don't find my carrier rom on the internet (my carrier modified the OS)? Do I have to make a backup of the whole phone before installing the custom rom or is there any other method?
Welcome.
1. So, considering the history of the Redmi Note series, how good of a package Note 10 Pro is and how advanced the community is within 6 months, you can expect updates for the next 3 years, So don't worry about it.
I don't know the answer to 2., but depending on your country and carrier, I am sure someone would have made the stock ROM available?

Downgrade from Android12 possible?

I didnt spot the message about losing GearVR and now having upgraded my GearVR is not functional. It says I cannot go back but... this is XDA so, can i ??
Also not sure if I can re-install the Oculus GearVR app (can't see it on PlayStore) so does anyone know which APKs I need to install as well?
on my s10+ i get se same Issue. According official samsung information, it seems that gear VR do not run on android 12. I did not find any solution for now.

Sorry don't know anything about gearVR, but no, if the bootloader version has increased, which I believe it does when going to A12, then you can't downgrade.
I'm pretty sure there is no xda 'work'a'round' for that, haven't seen one and everything I've read indicates not possible. Do some searching I guess to be positive, but one prereq to bootloader unlock is being on a specific BL version, and even their directions indicate if you're above that version, nothing you can do.
cheers
Thanks for replying... I guess I am boned
I successfuly reverted to Android 11 G975XXSEFUJ2 from Android 12 since I saw issue about GearVR...IF you are on first release of A12 you can downgrade.
Flash all A11 stock firmware package and choose CSC instead Home_csc !

You have the S10+, from what I see, the most recent BL version is 6 on both a11 and the new a12, so that fits the requirements.
It looks like for at least some of the S10 firmware upgrades, the BL version changes, thus u cannot go back if that's the case. Not all A12 updates are out for the S10, so we don't know yet if the BL version will change for them.
Yes.I think they left compatible downgradable bootloader for those users who didn't saw info about GearVR support as a last chance to revert.
I presume,as we learned from previous updates, in future releases of A12 downgrade will not be possible because of their privacy paranoia.

I have the S10 and from what I can tell the BL version is also 6 on my A12 update.
Does this mean I can just use odin to load a "compatible downgradable bootloader" and I will be able to downgrade back to 11? Does my phone have to be unlocked to do this?
Assuming I back up all my data, will I be able to go back to 11 without compromising my xfinity number, security, ect.? I am simply looking for the best way to just revert back to 11 and reload everything I was using before.

Well as far as I know you can, but that's from what I've read, not from doing the exact scenario you speak of. Sometimes we just have to try it to know for sure. I have read for sure the if the BL isn't the same version, you can't go back. And no, the phone does not have to be unlocked.
good luck

Thank you for your help!
I figured the most recent update of A11 from
Galaxy Firmware - Samsung Galaxy S10 SM-G973U (CHA) | G973USQU6GUJ3
This Firmware flash for Samsung Galaxy S10 with the Phone Model Number SM-G973U for region 🇺🇸 United States with CSC code CHA and R(Android 11) OS.
galaxyfirmware.com
is what I would need.
The Baseband I have from A12 currently is G973USQU6HULD, so from what was said here the BL ver. 6 means I should be able to do it.
Model #, Country, region/carrier from the above link all match my specs. So if I'm to understand correctly all I should have to do is backup and then use the firmware with odin to flash to my device using tin2404's procedure from above? (Flash all A11 stock firmware package and choose CSC instead of Home_csc !)

Doesn't choosing CSC clear all the app data and basically factory reset it? Wouldn't I want to use Home_CSC, or does it not then work properly?

Update:
Successfully used odin to revert to os11, had to factory reset after odin completed, then I just reloaded my backup.
After more research I decided to block all future updates using ADB and this method:
No more headaches with my software!
Actually, it is neccessery to choose clear CSC to erase leftovers..Choosing Home_CSC brings various of errors possible.
Workaround is doing TWRP backup on SD Card then after clear flashing restoring ONLY data partition.
