Laser auto focus??? - Redmi K20 Pro / Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro Questions & Answe

Can anyone confirm if k20 pro has laser auto focus in addition to pdaf? Is this a hardware component or something to do with the software?

Its hardware component. Located between middle and lower camera.

You can see two dots between middle and lower camera, which indicate laser auto focus presence.

Will that enhance camera performance?

Depends on how you define camera performance. For quick and accurate focus, definitely.

Wonder why none of the reviewers talk about this feature in their videos. Lol

Because it is not stated by Xiaomi anywhere. Saw it on JerryRigEverything K20 Pro teardown

That spec list is completely fake. It is certain that it will use Omnivision sensor for front camera and probably for the rear one. Probably it will use the latest and greatest OV16860 from OV wich has very large pixel, anti color crosstalk and good resolution/noise ratio
Whatever, no OIS no party, no IR no party

If it's using the OV16860 then we get [email protected] video.
The Moto G Plus has an OV16860 with f2.0 lens and does well enough. I'm expecting more from the 3.
Guess what?
not bad

Google Camera Mod for P20 Pro

Hello @Arnova8G2,
I saw your work with the Google Camera Mod for various phones and I just want to say impressive work! I am using the Huawei P20 Pro and absolutely hates the Front Camera functionality. Tried to download your file to use on my phone but was unable to do so. When I try downloading it is says there as a problem parsing the package. Do you by any chance know if it would work with the P20 Pro? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.
Dear @Arnova8G2 & @miniuser123,
I had S8 and you do fantastic job porting Pixel Xl 2 camera to all SD845 phones. And some other make port for LGV30 dual camera - rear camera and second wide angle camera.
Please make Pixel Xl 2 camera port for Huawei P20 Pro for 40MP, 10MP and camera zoom 3x, 5x.

It makes absolutely no sense to do 40MP. It's the inferior mode, and processing overhead would be insane for HDR, even with full optimisation (which you'll never see on a port). It wouldn't work.
Only 10MP makes sense.
5x is a hybrid zoom. You'd need the Huawei software. Google Camera currently has no such functionality. Not that it supports any optical zoom (3x) by default either.
You can perhaps hope for 10MP with working HDR+ and front camera. Anything else? I'd say it's completely unrealistic / unnecessary.
After the software updates, the only thing I'd really see Google Camera as being useful for is the front camera and / or for AOSP when that becomes stable on the P20 Pro. But by then, a working port of Huawei Camera on the P20/Pro is quite likely - or at least more likely, and certainly more desirable than a Google Camera port.

Yes, I am just hoping for the Front Camera to have the same Portrait Mode as the Google Camera as the Beauty Mode post-processing is through the roof even with it turned to zero. I am just hoping to use the Front Camera I have on the P20 to achieve the same Portrait result as I did from the Pixel 2 XL. Everything else about the P20 camera I can live with. Thank you.

Yes! Finally someone who has the same struggle as I have!
P20 pro is a pretty expensive phone and I am beginning to feel disappointed with the less than stellar quality of its front camera.
I know that its a fixed focus lens on the front but how come Gogle Pixel was able to implement a sharp shooter front camera with a fixed focus? To think that it has 24 Megapixels?!?! Such a scam

I don't think you understand what scam means.
Also, whilst not ideal, I suggest you learn how to work with fixed focus. You will not get bad results with it if you do, now that 'beauty' is in check.

Hi @mudnightoil,
sorry for the rather strong term that I used. But yes, I have been trying to learn some workarounds with a fixed focus front camera. It's just that, it's difficult to adjust because I was just so used to autofocus front cameras like Asus Selfie. I just feel like the 24 megapixel camera of the p20 pro is a wasted potential.
Another argument that I have is with Google Pixel's 8 mp fixed focus lens producing more vivid and sharper selfies than P20 pro's 24 mp.
Both the background and the foreground are sharp. Dynamic range is better! I mean come on! I really hope it could be fixed via software update very soon!

Same issue here ...the rear cameras are great ..but the front camera beautification is just too agressive even when set to zero . A google camera mod with HDR+ in just 10mp for rear camera and portrait enabled on both the front and rear will be really helpful .

That's not a GCam port, that's to install the P20 Pro Camera software on a non-pro P20.
So far as I'm aware you'll need the libs to get it to work properly.
Tbh the pro has a monster camera set up.
The 40mp is more for landscape pics, the 10 for point and shoot.
the selfie cam has been great for me so far.
But then I've only had it since 11am 24th may so I'm sure I'll find some issues.
The rear cameras are great and on average they take better pictures than my Pixel 2. I also end up with pictures that I just otherwise would never have been able to capture with another cameraphone. There are some downsides though where I would love to use a hypothetical GCam port. Outdoor photography is a chore thanks to the auto "greenery" AI thing that cranks the saturation. The 10 MP auto mode also oversharpens like crazy. Pro mode is sometimes useful, but you lose things like HDR or aperture simulation which are lame tradeoffs.
The biggest issue for me though is the front camera, which is completely unusable thanks to the beauty mode that can't actually be fully disabled. I'm using Retrica right now which works pretty well but you lose the nice aperture/bokeh simulation of the P20 camera app. Small price to pay for a human looking face, but anyway that's mainly why I'm hoping for a GCam port.
I am very interested in development. Maybe it's possible.

I've tested the 40MP on everything... it's fantastic. The detail I get out of each picture is a huge step up even from my old DSLR. Granted, I did not have an expensive lens, but the processing power on this phone easily surpasses that camera!

The 10MP mode is superior in almost any setting. Hence why it's the default mode. That the 40MP mode is even exposed is mainly for marketing reasons.

That's not the case at all from my experience comparing 10 vs 40 vs 3x zoom in various situations.
In low light, 40mp is poor, but in well lit places, 40mp is far more detailed, less over-sharpened, and significantly nicer overall.
It's generally less processed, and HDR etc doesn't seem to be enabled on it, but it's certainly not inferior to 10mp in general, but is occasionally.
If you want to do any post processing, the 40mp is probably better in general... though I guess few would want to do this!

Moto G5s Plus correct camera sensor and chipset

Hello everyone!
Creating this thread in order to clarify some details about our device.
I recently bought it (Europe version-xt1085,3Gb RAM/32gb) but instead of a SD625 it has a SD626. How is it possible? And giving the fact that there are rumors that also note that our camera sensor is a Sony IMX 258 Bayer and not a samsung CMOS makes me doubt much of the initial information provided or found. Can somebody please post different screenshots from the first page of CPU-Z and also to check system/etc/camera for camera msm Sanders XML for those who have the device rooted? I do not want to root it yet as Oreo updates are rolling in a couple of days.
I also want to find a solution to exceed the limitations of the software processing of the camera to the full potential of the sensor (if it is a Sony one indeed).
Thank you
Also take a look at the attachment.
Ok
SD 626 too
Mine also says Snapdragon 626, it's a CPU-Z bug. But regarding the camera sensor I have no idea if there's any way to improve the image quality via modifying the image processing.

What about the camera files?
If you go to Moto G5 Plus's theming and modding forum, you'll see a thread explaining how. And how it gives rise to possibilities of other devices as well.

You can see clearly the name S5K3L8 as the rear sensor (mono&rgb). And at the other screenshot, the name S5K4H8 which is a selfie samsung sensor. You can google both of these sensors and their details are going to match our device's details.
There are also two files of the IMX258 in the camera folder but they're useless or maybe they put it to fake the users who, like me and many more, would be pissed off if they found out what a crap of a sensor they would have in their device.
The dev of the camera improvements of G5 Plus told me that the only way of improving it is by copying the tuning of other S5K3L8 sensors used in other devices. But it is used in Xiaomi Redmi 4 and its camera is worse than ours so i don't think that is going to be a good idea. Another way actually is by modifying the libs yourself. Which i cannot do at the moment.
Just use Google Camera for taking pictures atm. Its HDR+ mode is a touch of magic.

The only way to confirm properly is to look at the hardware. Any idea where we may be able to find images of just the Samsung camera module so I can compare it the the one in my G5S+?
To be honest I'm very happy with the way my HDR+ photos turn out.
My family are convinced this has a better camera than the iPhone SE from using gcam, so the phone must be somewhat capable of good photos Low light photos are crap though, tons of noise.
EDIT: Samsung specs say the S5K3L8 sensor is capable of only 30fps. Given we can record 1080p/60fps maybe it isn't that sensor?
That's strange, my g5s plus can only shoot 1080p/30fps. I don't know if it was after the latest camera update or not.
Edit: my mistake, apparently i was looking at the front camera settings. The rear camera can shot 1080p/60 just fine and are up to 30fps 4k

The samsung sensor is capable of shooting 4k videos but it is not enabled in most devices that are using it. For example in Xiaomi Redmi devices. I do not know precisely why and how but any speculation would bring no improvement to the camera whatsoever.

Question Human Face Picture bit darker than normal

I bought redmi note 10 pro max somedays ago. Normal shots of this phone is fine. But when I click photos of human face it is bit darker than normal. My other phones picture is more natural and real. But this one is bit darker and it can be really annoying sometimes. Attached some picture sample here. 1st picture is from Note 10 pro max and 2nd one is from Redmi 4x I am on miui 12.5.2 by the way. Is this a software or hardware issue I am confused. Please help!

Forget if it's darker or brighter. Actual thing you have to look for is which one has natural colors (without enhancing colors artificially) because some phones/OEMs put artificial algorithms to make the picture look more brighter and put excessive brightness than what it actually has naturally.
Some people like natural colors and some like enhanced (artificial) colors/photos.
Cheers!
i can confirm the same... human face photos are too much saturated+yellowish+darker (with both stock miui and ANX )... compared with my redmi note 5 pro+mi 10i. (rn5 pro is pretty much natural WOW) .. and when adding 2x zoom to rear cam photos, it takes a bit much annoying time to process and clearly display the photo..

I have both redmi note 10 pro and Pro max. In both phones, human faces look darker in pics as well as 1080p videos (720p vids are bit grainy and just same as other phones). The problem persists in all conditions, let it be well lit indoor or outdoor, for group photos etc. Such problems were not there in my other redmi/realme/honor phones. Indoor Pics are not all presentable whatever the setting may be. And if you zoom in to human face, they kind of messy. Grainy would have been fine. Not sure if it can be improved.
This is because different mobile phones have different shooting configurations. This problem can be solved by adjusting some functions, etc.
Facing the same situation from day one of the use of Redmi note 10 pro max.
All pictures where human is involved are darker than actual skin color tone.
Not sure how to fix that. I use some filters provided by redmi to balance out the color tone, but that is something that you don't wanna do every time you open the camera.
Any solution?
(GCAM also provided the same results)

Redmi Note 10 Pro max owned by me too has the same problem. I had checked many note 10 pro max camera review videos and for them it seems normal as any typical phone camera - smoothens a little, improve brightness, overall the picture gets pleasant and good. However, just on my Redmi note10 Pro max, any human skin gets a darker tone- FYI it is not even the natural color, but darker.
Initially thought it is a software issue and might get resolved with updates. Though I update my phone as soon as updates gets available, so far, after an year and numerous updates, the issue is still there. I tried all settings that they provide for camera and tried other camera apps etc- but results were same.
I suspect it could be a hardware issue due to bad quality control- I'm an electronics engineer and I do encounter one off problems for some items in mass production.
From the conversation above, I'm understanding that there are a few others who have same experience as me with Redmi Note 10 pro max.

But I wasted my 21000. I m very sad by purchasing this phone. Why it darken human face only. Every setting failed. Also photo crash after zooming. Very bad quality. What is fun of 108 mp camera. Redmi decieving it's customers. In future I will never buy Xiaomi phones.

I've not tried any rom yet, actually I'm unable to decide which distro I should choose, I want to try Pixel Experience but I can't see it near future

Yesterday I have found out (on my Redmi Note 11 with Superior-OS) that the pixelation / blur in photos (I thought it's caused by ****ty Camera app / driver) might be resolved by using better Gallery app:

It has fixed the quality / speed of the picture rendering -- during scolling & zooming of a picture (subway map) I have seen pixelated / blurred areas (for > 1sec) and I thought it's a camera problem. But when I used another gallery app, it was pixelated only for maybe 0.5sec and then it got perfectly sharp.
I mean it's not Windows so it doesn't show you the icon (when the app is busy and the user should wait) -- so I was not sure whether the app is busy rendering or not.
I noticed camer on the redmi is not as good as the camera on my MiA2. I am hoping gcam will fix that but I will have to use the stock camera app sometimes for pro mode.

I have noticed the "auto" picture with gcam is way better than the auto setting on the stock app. Using the pro mode on the stock app though I can get a more realistic picture by adjusting white balance etc manually but the image still isn't as crisp as gcam. Night mode on gcam is amazing too.
Can't seem to get the 50mp to work on gcam so can't compare that. I use the 50mp feature to take pictures of signs or large blocks of text, I can definitely get better clarity when zooming in but I wouldn't call it a great looking picture. Luckily that isn't why I bought the phone.
The camera doesn't knock out true 50mp photos , they pixels are arranged in groups of 4 so 4 small ones make up one bigger one hence the 12.5mp photos . 50mp photos are just enlarged 12.5 ones really . And You may notice a lot of versions of gcam are knocking out 8mp photos too , try the version I posted in the gcam thread with the XML ( it's got an agc extension for some reason ) . It produces 12.5s and it's the sharpest gcam I've seen yet , although white balance is a bit off it can easily be corrected in Snapseed
And tbh I'm starting to think this phone is a dog , phone call volume seems pretty low compared to my old x3 NFC . That with the Bluetooth audio dropouts , crappy camera .. only good thing about it is the screen lol
I am happy for now, aside from the camera it's still an upgrade from my MiA2 and it cost me less than a decent dinner in a restaurant.
