Cyanogenmod was the first rom i ever flashed. Seeing it grow up kinda brings a tear to my eye :crying: . Best of luck Steve im sure it will be popular!

Does anyone else realize how nuts this is? I mean, from a back door, unlicensed, hackers, weekend project to a full fledged entity that directly competes against big name software. All for free. This is amazing and can only get better congrats to them and the whole android hacker community!

I'm pretty sure the CM installer will require root, I mean there are plenty of apps that requires root on the PlayStore.
I'm curious of how they will eventually monetize this. $7mil is no small investment, the invester will expect a return? I'm pretty sure if cm came shipped with a phone it might be without root. If you followed Steve K on plus he posted a question about the reasons why users want root and he said it was possible to achieve most of it without root with coding and thus will provide a more secure environment.

If it does require root, what exactly is the point? I'm sure most people who go through the trouble of rooting their devices have at least heard of CM, if not used it. This really won't "expand the user base" or whatever unless it can painlessly root your phone from stock. Which I'm pretty sure it can't do. Plus, He also writes about how the rooting process is "gruesome" and he thinks it is unnecessary. Maybe he has/will figure out a way to get CM on our phones without root? He said next few weeks, so... let's see.

I meant that their goal would be to have a partnership with oems and have devices that comes with cm pre-installed so there would be no need for root it might just update thru the stock recovery just the same as a regular ota would be. Well everything is just speculation but from the looks of focal then voice+ there is going to be so many good things to come. A revamp theme engine that rivals miui maybe.

If I were a multi billion dollar company, I wouldn't exactly want to outsource my OS development to a small hacking startup.
It would be cool, but I think it's not possible right now, at least, not with mainstream OEMs.

Although I don't typically use it as a stand-alone ROM, most of the ROMs I build and like best are based in CM. They have a great team and embody everything about open-source that users, devs and aspiring devs want to emulate. I think it's high time they receive the recognition they deserve and a top spot in the Android and mobile OS forum. Best of luck, guys!

I wonder if this will void warranty since you basically just installed an app. Also, I know I'll be laughed at, but will not having root fix the frequency lock issue?

C'mon.
The whole point of CM is to get closer to the stock experience. It's just that now, overlays like TW and Sense don't suck. CM is upping their ante to compete with these guys (Hence the project name Nemesis). They are introducing features like CM accounts and focal, which don't detract from the experience.
It would be suicide for CM to completely run away with Android like that.

Looks like the installer will only work on unlocked *bootloader unlocked* and developer editions, they are hoping more manufacturers will eventually offer offical unlock, similar to HTC dev unlock I am thinking. So it isn't going to magically install CM on any device.
CyanogenMod will have its own installer app “in the coming weeks” which will be available in the Play Store. Initially the app will not install CyanogenMod on devices for which unofficial exploits were used to unlock their bootloaders. Steve Kondik (cyanogen himself if you didn’t already know) had this to say about the installer app:
The first release of the installer won’t support devices that require exploits. The long-term goal is to open up OEMs to the possibility of supporting us officially- there’s zero technical reason for these measures and the best way to fix it is to not buy these devices and speak your mind.

It’s more important to me to work with OEMs on changing policy than developing exploits, though. And we’ll do that by creating great stuff that people want to use.
The app should work seamlessly on your Nexus device, your Developer Edition device or your device for which an official bootloader unlock is available.

ZTE Axon (non Pro) Marshmallow update

I just purchased this phone. Seems like a great device. Too bad there is no root on it.
I chatted with customer support from ZTE asking when they are planning to release Marshmallow for the Axon.
They advised that Mid April is the time frame when they are planning to release that update.

How nice of them to tell us. I tweeted them and put something on Facebook and nothing. Next time I'll call. But at least we know.

Sweet! I just got my Axon. I got it for $160 on eBay brand new. Pretty good phone for the price I got ir for. Newegg was trying to get rid of them because the new line of Axon phones will be released soon.
Anyways, Soon after I read this post I called ZTE myself and the lady didn't want to say when they were planning on releasing it but she did tell me that they are still developing it. So at least we know we're getting the update.

Looking at all the bugs Marshmallow update has on the Pro, I wouldn't be so quick to update when it comes out on the non Pro version...

This phone is pretty good tho, except for blue color for the metal back, also 2GB of ram is not enough. I am always out of ram and app reload everytime i change.
The design make me feel like they got 2 front speakers but ... only 1 lol.
Anyway, for the price, im ok with it. Hopefully it got 6.0 soon

Less than 50 Mb. Not update for Marshmallow. And I found this Axon is lagging. Trying to find a clean customized ROM but no luck.

After B21 update wifi in zte axon work very slow. Reboot, turn off then on help for a while. Speed drop to 0.6 down and 0.5 up. Is some one else have same problem?

Just got this phone today. I thought I was getting the pro. Lol can really notice the RAM at 2g being a little bit laggy. But otherwise it's not bad. If you enable developer options and set all of your animation settings to .5 it speeds it up considerably. Tried King root. Nothing yet but the requests are coming in for it. Id say we will get root soon. I worry about the inability to battery pull tho. It's always nice when rooting and modding lol

Ordered an Axon non-Pro for my younger brother a week back, has there been any update on the Marshmallow update for it? I saw earlier this this thread that ZTE told someone it was a mid April target, but thats come and gone. My brothers new Axon has definitely not received an MM update yet. He did pull down 2(3?) smaller OTAs after I got him connected to his wifi.
Since I'm considering an Axon 7 for myself, I've started paying attention to their update release reputation. I don't care so much about custom roms any more, or root really, but I do want to know that I'm going to get at least 1 timely OS update.

Every ZTE Rep i have talked to said the MM update is still under development by their R&D department and have no idea when it will be released, but it will/

We have 2 Axon phones ([A1R] 5.5" ). One of them received the OTA Marshmallow 6.0.1 update automatically from Fido-Canada, everything went fine, great, no-problem.
The second "A1R" Axon is stuck with Android 5.1.1 ; and the OTA(6.0) is not coming through at all.
What can be done to force the Marshmallow update on that phone ?

I have the same problem. Their upgrade schedule says the update is out but I am not receiving the update either. I will probably try contacting fido to see what the problem is.

I too have been eagerly waiting for this upgrade and have read in a many forums that it was coming, with excerpts from dialogues with customer reps at various companies.
Today I spoke with a CSR at my carrier, who gave me ZTE's number to call. They then told me to use the support chat, who gave me some info saying that it has not yet been abandoned, and she would escalate my concern to the R&D team, but also suggested I post this request in here.
Caroline K: Thank you for the information. There has been talk of the Axon A1R device software update to the Android 6.0 software.
We have been getting a lot of requests from customers for the Android 6.0 software on the Axon A1R device.
From our conversation:
Caroline K: I do apologize, we do not have any estimated time frame as to when the Axon device will get the Android 6.0 software.
ME: Thanks. The alternative to upgrading the software would be to allow root access on the devices so we can install our own custom operating systems, but I have also read that ZTE is mute on those requests
Caroline K: I do understand your concerns as an end user myself. Most new applications require new software.
Yes, I do agree with you when it comes to unlocking the bootloader. ZTE does not have the option.
Me: Thanks for your understanding. As you have suggested you would escalate the issue, shall I expect a future response from the R&D team?
Caroline K: I will forward the unlock boot loader to our R&D team as well. The Axon 7 device was the only device that came close to the boot loader unlock.
So R&D team, please please please if you're reading this (as I have been told that you do: Caroline: Our forum support is run by part of the software team), please push out an update for Android Marshmallow 6.0, or unlock the boot loader to we can do our own custom ROMs.

I love the specs of the phone, finally a flagship which has all I personally need.
When it gets the amount of Custom Roms of the Z1 i really want to buy the Z2.
Furthermore 6 GB Ram sounds really tasty.

I'd like to think so. See no reason why not.
I was literally on the cusp of buying the Xiaomi Mi5, but this appears far superior, except perhaps the lack of NFC.
ZUK Z1 wasn't very popular, but it kind of missed the boat. Seems ZUK have dropped this phone right at the correct time. Xiaomi isn't making it easy to get the Mi5 and the OP3 hasn't dropped yet.
Be nice if CyanogenOS 13 was on it.....

Okay looking at their Facebook page seems unlikely they wanna use CM again... so hopefully its unlocked so there will be good development for this phone to change ZUI.
There is intl version of lenovo rom though.

Agree of course. I didn't want to sound offensive But tbh, I only have had zuk z1 in my hands for maybe 5 days. And CM was as buggy as ZUI. So I'll wait for xda users "reviews" rather than some *izmo**** websites review. And then I will decide. On paper it looks good so far

What is Toms ?

based on what i read in a couple of sites - it says there is no international ver of the device.
hope it will be proved to be wrong.

Looks like no international version. China only.

It won't come with cm, although I think it would be an open source software and would be a peace of cake making Nexus ROM based .. So I don't mind.

it's a very personal opinion. I dislike actually every ROM that is not AOSP based. Material design is brilliant and implemented in all major apps. Switching from a material design app (e.g. Gmail) to a very chinese stile (e.g. ZUI) is very inconsistent.
I'm not a Cyanogen fanboy (I'd be happy with something similar to what OnePlus did with Oxygen OS) but the stability, performance and features of COS 12.1 on the Z1, are almost perfect for my usage pattern.
Long story short: it's a very personal preference of Android as it was designed by Google with some nice additional features.

Ciao @branzoll,
unfortunately in my long experience of flashing CM and ASOP roms I never found am implementation that was perfect (lower than stock camera quality, bad radio drivers (GPS), lower than stock battery life). The two best CM/COS implementation I tryied were on ZUK Z1 and OPO!!
I hope I'll be wrong but I struggle to think of full sources sharing. No OEM want/can have a full release (see Sony and their willingness to share stopped by the legal issue with Quallcom).
I lost the hope of a perfect custom AOSP rom that is not a official commercial one (COS/Oxygen/some Mediatek ROMs).

What are the chances of unlocked bootloader and root?

Since HMD / Nokia said that they'd begin offering bootloader unlocks on a selection of their devices, very little has happened, and consequently, very little if any development or popularity on XDA or among other tinkerers or power users has followed.
The 9 is potentially a very attractive device, and I've ordered one on the potential strength of the camera and general value proposition, even if I'd rather the screen weren't so small (6" 18:9 is tiny - given tall aspects' narrowness and poor usability).
I'm hoping they'll do the right thing here, but if they don't, I can't see myself keeping it, and would struggle to recommend it or other Nokia devices to anyone.

I'd like to know this as well. I'm so used to having devices with unlockable bootloader, I was in my feelings when my PureView 9 wasn't unlockable

There's a dev that asked for $30 to help with development of TWRP,i can give you his telegram link in DM and you will see some of his work on other Nokia devices, we just need enough users who are interested to donate since he'll not make it for free, keep in mind that he might still not be able to make one that decrypts data and there for making the whole thing very useless without ability to make nandroid backups of /data

How about donating to @phhusson because the AOSP GSI he works on pretty much has all basic features working with the exception of finger print sensor but giving how long it took to get an under-screen sensor working for OP6T that might be a long way off yet.

FWIW, on Mi9, I fixed under-display fingerprint less than three days after getting it. (more precisely, after I got bootloader unlock because of stupid Xiaomi 2 weeks bootloader lock).
Also I've been told that pop-up camera doesn't work well on OP7Pro too. Though this should be quite easy to fix.
(I'm currently working on K20 rather than OP7Pro for the moment though)
Then I'm supposedly getting an OP7 from OP, but I haven't got much news.

I think the devs are waiting until all the OnePlus 7/7 Pro models are out and all the sources are available so they're not starting again and again.

I used your 9phh treble build and it actually works really well. But yes, camera pops up and wont come down, have to give it a manual tap and it closes. FP, yep, non existent. But other than that, its pretty stable and useable. Glad to hear you are getting one. If you need logs etc, let me know and ill get them to you. Or ill just wait till you get yours.

I'm not. "CUSTOM" ROMs are getting more and more obsolete, especially as long as smartphone OEMs churn out decent stock ROMS, like Oneplus.. Or if certain OEM rom features can't work nice on a custom rom. Even so, it's a lot easier to just improve OOS as is; hard to compete since at heart, OOS is a ROM everyone helped to develop somehow. The only things that seem to matter is - DARK THEMES and themeability, which don't need a custom rom. - Magisk root modules -[ed]Xposed modules -kernels.. If a custom ROM could pack all stock rom features with actual additional features (maybe dual audio, 4k HDR recording, idk)..
Not meaning to talk garbage to all custom rom makers, but it's no longer as essential as it was. There's "better" things to work on, as people have less time to do stuff, or as android just gets better.

What were your steps to get a GSI to work on our device? I couldn't get it to boot

I vooted it easily. Follow Google's method. For flashing Android 10 gsi then fastboot -w and flash everything needed. Should boot fine. Ran Omni the other day

Not sure if anyone has tried, but im guessing the 6t fp fix does not work on the 7/pro so it will need rebuilt from scratch again?
